• Benchmark virtual machines?

  I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop? Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs). • How much audio latency is noticeable by human brain?

  I am choosing a wireless headset for my PC (I hate cables) and am looking at Sennheiser RS 170 / 180. They supposedly sound great, however, there is a 25ms audio latency. I've heard that this is OK when watching TV or listening musing but is bad for games. The question is - has there been any research / hard data that would show how much of a delay is noticeable by human brain? 25ms doesn't sound like a lot but I may be wrong.

• HDMI Disconnects after TV has been off for a while

  I have an EVGA NVidia GT 610 card in a media center PC running Windows 8 x64 When the TV has been turned off for a while and then turned back on, there will usually be no HDMI signal until I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in. Any ideas how what might be causing this or what I should check? I have the latest drivers from NVidia and the card recognizes the TV just fine. Also, my XBox 360 and PS3 work just fine and always show up.

• Windows 7 boots with a blank screen with mouse cursor only.

  My Windows 7 machine was powered down without logging out first. Now when booting the PC, Windows 7 does not completely start--instead it boots to an all-black screen with a mouse cursor that can be moved around. There are no icons, toolbars, etc. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not bring up the Task Manager. Booting to Safe Mode renders the same result.

• Creating a password-protected task in Windows 7

  I would like to configure a task like "child control software", so it would hibernate the pc at certain times. Is it possible to prevent modification (here: pausing) of a task through requiring the entering of the admin password to modify, EVEN THOUGH the currently-logged-in (and only) user is the admin account itself? (Do you know of any child control software that does NOT require an additional account yet is able to hibernate the system at certain times?) Thanks a lot!

  the volume from my windows 7 computer lowers automatically. Regarding the several "similar questions" that have been posted to SU.com before, they have never been properly answered. • i7 4770k or i7 4930k - Which for faster compile times? [on hold]

  I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio?   I have an external HD (WD MyBook Essentials) with all of my backups (1TB) for some unknown reason, when I try to connect the drive (Tried several interfaces: eSATA/plugged it into my PC/USB) I get this message: "You need to format the disk in drive M: before you can use it" I've looked in disk management at the drive, and its listed in there - with the same full capacity.   Somebody was using my Windows 7 and she hibernated it instead of shutting down. Later, I booted up Ubuntu and moved about 2GB worth of files from the Ubuntu partition to the Windows partition. After booting up Windows (from hibernation), I couldn't find any of the files. Then I restarted the PC, and the files showed for a second or two and then disappeared. Did Windows delete all the files I put on it while it was hibernating?

  Recently I have bought a second hand HP Notebook from a friend. The PC still has the recovery partition not backed up yet. However, I'm thinking of resetting Windows using the new Windows 8 resetting feature. Windows warned me that all files will be deleted. Is it okay to reset Windows then backup the recovery partition in order to have a fresh backup or this can lead to losing the recovery partition and, with it, my genuine copy of Windows 8?

  I'm having the problem of needing a hard drive that can be written to by both a Mac and a PC. I have found that FAT32 might be an option, but as a video editor I often deal with files over the 4 GB limit. And since Mac doesn't read NTFS (very well with third-party programs) I'm considering FAT32. I'm curious, what happens when you try to write a file that is over 4 GB? What is a good way around this?

  Is there a way, using Windows GPO, to set up a list of "default" mapped drives that can be applied to a group of users? I runs small network and would like to make sure that certain groups of users (like Sales or Support) have the same network shares mapped to the same drive letters irrespective of which PC they log onto. • Hard drive restore on reboot on windows embedded

  My company has an old out of service device with windows embedded on it that we want to re purpose. Any changes to the drive (SD Card with 2 partitions), (ie: installed software, ip address, system settings, files) are reset/deleted when we reboot the device. We can successfully make changes to the drive by plugging it into a PC, but that has its limitations and we would like to be able to use our device. Can anyone tell us more about the technology used for doing this and how/if we can disable it?
