• Easiest, free way to start with Flex?

  I'm interested in getting started with Flex, as I've wanted to work with flash for quite awhile but have never liked the designer-oriented way of programming. I've heard flex can be used for free, and is programmer friendly, but I'm having some issues... I can't find any good sites with flex resources. I'm used to PHP, so maybe I'm spoiled with a full manual, comments and tutorials, but I can't even find a decent tutorial site. So, what are some good flex starts to get started, and what's a good, free IDE to program with?

• Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?

Do you use caffeine when you do stay up late? Do you prefer to have a large amount of caffeine all at once, or small amounts over a longer period of time? Do you use energy drinks, 5-hour energy shots, coffee, tea, or caffeine pills? How about other stimulants such as amphetamines? For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience.   Hello I have a question for a c programmer out there, we have a tast at school to create a soft real time system in an operation system made by our teacher. Well that is all fine and dandy, we have chosen to create a system that calcuate how many unites of medicine a diabetic need based on his or hers blood sugar. It does not need to be correct just that we have the idea of a real time system :D But we have hit a little snag our formula for calculating the units of medicine is [blood sugar] * 1.2 But the only way we can send messages between processes is via a structure that contains 8 longs, but here is where my knowledge of c ends, we need for some way to split this double into 2 longs, example: the whole number in long 0 and the decimals in long 1 and then assemble it on the other side. But I have no idea who to do this, and therefore need a little help. We have tried but we do not have access to c standard libraries

  I am a newbie to Trident and I'm looking to create an 'Average' aggregator similar to 'Sum(), but for 'Average'.The following does not work: public class Average implements CombinerAggregator<Long>.......{ public Long init(TridentTuple tuple) { (Long)tuple.getValue(0); } public Long Combine(long val1,long val2){ return val1+val2/2; } public Long zero(){ return 0L; } } It may not be exactly syntactically correct, but that's the idea. Please help if you can. Given 2 tuples with values [2,4,1] and [2,2,5] and fields 'a','b' and 'c' and doing an average on field 'b' should return '3'. • Implementing simple business model in Haskell

  Supose we have a very simple model: Station has at least one Train Train has at least two Stations The model has to allow to check what stations any given train visits and to check what trains visit a particular station. How to model it in Haskell? I am a Haskell newbie, so please correct me: once an object is created, you cannot modify it - you can only make a new object based on that one (~immutability). Am I right? If so, I'll have to create a lot of temporary variables with semi-initialized objects (during deserialization or even in unit tests). Basically what I need is an example of modeling domain classes in Haskell - after reading "Learn you a haskell.." I still have no idea how to use this language.

• Calculating terrain height in 3d-space

  Hi I'm diving into 3d programming a bit and am currently learning by writing a procedural terrain generator that generates terrain based on a heightmap. I would also want to implement some physics and my first attempt at terrain collision was by simply checking the current position vs the heightmap. This however wont work well against small objects as you'd have to calculate the height by taking the heightdifference of the nearest vertices of the object and doing this every colision check is pretty slow. Beleive me I tried googling for it but there's simply so much crap and millions of blogs posting ripped-of newbie tutorials everywhere with basically no real information on the subject, I can't find anything that explains it or even names any generally used techniques. I'm not asking for code or a complete solution, but if anyone knows a particular technique good for calculating a high-res heightmap out of the already generated and smoothed terrain I would be very happy as I could look into it further when I know what I'm looking for. • How do I make PyScripter work? Says it cant find python26.dll

  I installed PyScript to try it out but it just wont start. It only gives me the error: "Error126: Could not open Dll "python26.dll" followed by: "Python could not be properly initialized. We must quit." I think this may have something to do with the PYTHONPATH but since I'm a newbie and dont know what it is or exactly what to put in the PYTHONPATH, after some googling, I ask here. Also, when I tried to install wxPython it was impossible becouse the PYTHONPATH could not be found.(Just a side note) I have installed ActivePython 2.6 and the PATH is set so I can access python in cmd.

• Which rdfa parser for java that supports currently used rdfa attributes?

  I am building an app in Java using Jena for semantic information scraping. I am looking for a RDFa parser that would allow me to correctly extract all the rdfa statements. Specifically, one that extracts info about namespaces used and presuming that rdfa tags are correct in the page produces correct triples, ones that distinguish between object and data properties. I went through all rdfa parsers from the site http://rdfa.info/wiki/Consume for Java. They all struggle to extract any rdfa statements and if they do not crash, Jena RDFa parser shows plenty of errors and then dies a terrible death, the data is of little use as it is incorrectly processed and generally mixed up. I am newbie in this area so please be gentle:) I was also thinking of using a library written in different language but then again I don't really know how to plug it into Java code. Any suggestions?

• [C++] Wrong EOF when unzipping binary file

  Hello there, I tried to unzip a binary file to a membuf from a zip archive using Lucian Wischik's Zip Utils: http://www.wischik.com/lu/programmer/zip_utils.html http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/zip_utils.aspx FindZipItem(hz, filename.c_str(), true, &j, &ze); char *content = new char[ze.unc_size]; UnzipItem(hz, j, content, ze.unc_size); delete[] content; But it didn't unzip the file correctly. It stopped at the first 0x00 of the file. For example when I unzip an MP3 file, it will only unzip the first 4 bytes: 0x49443303 (ID3\0) because the 5th to 8th byte is 0x00000000. I also tried to capture the ZR_RESULT, and it always return ZR_OK (which means completed without errors).   I'm a newbie to the SVG world, just started experimenting today. I'm trying to create a mobile site where the primary graphics are all scalable, thus supporting all display resolutions. I created an svg file for my input (currently type="image"), and suprisingly the results are as expected in my code editor (Coda). In testing (mobile Safari, DT Safari and DT FF), the input displays broken image path placeholder (the oath is correct because I can right-click to download the file). How do I go about including my SVG file in the (html5) document?

• Is Python appropriate for algorithms focused on scientific computing?

  My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based? Sorry for the condensed format of questions, but I'm very curious and was hoping a more experienced programmer could help me out.

• Adding and Testing Compatibility of External Jar to Blackberry Project

  Hi, I am a newbie at Blackberry development. I have Eclipse 3.5.1 and Blackberry JRE 4.7.0. In my application, I added 2 external jars to my project and a properties file. I do not know for sure whether the jars I am trying to add and the webservices I am calling are compatible with Blackberry. I have to test that too. When I tried running my project, I get - "Project has verification Error". Is it because I did not add the external jars correctly? Or is it because the jars may not be compatible with Blackberry?

• What benefits can Java developer have from moving to a *NIX platform?

  Hi everyone, A friend of mine is a Java developer, who's using *NIX for ages. He claims that *NIX is for real Java geeks, whereas WIN is for dummies (and I'm one of them, according to him) and girls. When I ask him to argue his position, and explain, what's so good for Java developer on *NIX, he starts talking about console, wget, curl and grep. But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process. • How do I modify the -encoding argument to javac in the Android Ant build system

  Apologies if this is a stupid question - I'm an Android and Ant newbie. I have utf8 encoded source files that I need to compile with the Android Ant build system. By default, the encoding is set to ascii. I'd be very grateful for a pointer to whatever I need to do to let the build system know that my files are utf8. • Closing any open info windows in google maps api v3

  As the title states, on a given event (for me this happens to be upon opening a new google.maps.InfoWindow I want to be able to close any other currently open info windows. Right now, I can open many at a time..but I want only 1 open at a time. I am creating the info windows dynamically (i.e. I don't know ahead of time how many will be generated), so in the click event of the current info window (which is where I want all the other open ones closed) I don't have a reference to any of the other open info windows on which to call close(). I am wondering how I can achieve this. I am not an experienced JavaScript programmer so I don't know if I need to use reflection or something similar here. Would the best way be just to save all the references in some sort of collection, then loop through the list closing them all? Thanks.

• Handling Session ID with Spring

  Hi, I'm trying to build a Spring server for GWT (you can think of it as of Javascript AJAX client). But I can't decide on one point of architecture. How should session be created and used? The obvious easiest way - is to use HTTP sessions (cookies and stuff). Looks fine, but I think that sending session ID separate from the headers would be better (SOAP style). So, what is better: getMyPetsName(String sessionID, int petID) or getMyPetsName(int petID) + session ID through HTTP header (cookies or something). Another question is, if I use the first way (which I like more) - how do I handle session in Spring? I'm really newbie in Spring, and googling did not help. What I mean is: String getMyPetsName(String sessionID, int petID) { Session s = someWayToGetItById(sessionID); } Thanks in advance.

  Hi, First thing I would say is that I am a Drupal newbie. So, I would appreciate your answer in a detailed step by step process. I am using Drupal 6 and location module. There are two main content types - user profile (using content profile module) and event content type. Both have one field for location. Now, lets suppose in his profile, user is selecting city as Toronto and province as Ontario. And some events have been added for Toronto city. I need one Views, which will display events from user city. So, if user is from Vancouver, and they click on "my city events", they will see list of events from their city. Someone told me that I can achieve this using arguments/ relationships, but I don't know how to do that. Can someone please help me out? I am not good at PHP either :(

• Can I find out which thread is running using Eclipse?

  I close my application by pressing a "Close" button. But in the Eclipse I see a red square indicating that something is still running. When I press this red square, I kill my application completely. Is it possible to find out what is still running (which method, which loop) using Eclipse? P.S. I am a newbie. So, it would be nice to have a simple solution. I also might not understand your answer if you use "technical" words which I do not know.

• Control process concurrency in PHP

  I have programmed a simple app that every X minutes checks if an image has changed in several websites and downloads it. It's very simple: downloads image header, make some CRC checks, downloads the file, stores in a MySQL database some data about each image and process next item... This process takes about 1 minute to complete. The problem is I have noticed that while the server is executing this process I cannot access to any page in the website, even those that don't require MySQL. I don't know why it is happening and I have no clue about how to fix it. Perhaps a more advanced PHP programmer can help me.

• SOAP - What's the point?

  I mean, really, what is the point of SOAP? Web services have been around for a while, and for a while it seemed that the terms 'SOAP' and 'Web service' were largely interchangeable. However SOAP always seemed unwieldy and massively overcomplicated to me. Then REST came along, and suddenly web services made sense. As Joel Spolsky says, give a programmer a REST URL, and they can start playing with the service right away, figuring it out. SOAP is obfuscated behind WSDLs and massively verbose XML, and despite being web based, you can't do anything as simple as access a SOAP service with a web browser. So the essence of my question is: Are there any good reasons to ever choose SOAP over REST? Are you working with SOAP now? Would it be better if the interface was REST? Am I wrong?

• AVD Failed to Load ~ Failed to Parse Properties ~ Mac OSX

  I'm going to say upfront, please forgive me. I'm a newbie to android development and fairly new to programming. Also on a Mac. You're going to have to talk...real...slow. I can't get an AVD to load. I've tried it from Eclipse and from the Android SDK Manager. Failed multiple times. Received the same error each time, "Failed to parse properties from Users/myname/.android/avd/nameIGaveEmulator/config.ini." I've the forum here and saw that others have had similar problems, but of the answers given, no one came back to say if they worked, and I don't see anyone with a similar problem on a Mac. If the path needs to be "changed" what exactly does that mean and how do I go about doing so?
