• VPS hosting for a social network

  Hi, I've developed a social network and I've been using shared hosting for that since it was launched. With that I wasn't able to send emails in bulk in cases like "newsletters" and "invitations to join my site". Plus most importantly most of the mails I send ended up in user's SPAM list.I'm planning to move into VPS as it may not have limits added. I'm wondering what's the cheapest VPS host available. I'm not pretty much familiar with Linux commands and seeking cPanel to do the work for me. • rsync remote to local automatic backup

  Because all my work is stored on a remote server I would like to auto backup my server monthly and weekly. My server is running Centos 5.5 and while searching the web I'm found a tool named rsync. I got my first update manually by using this command in terminal: sudo rsync -chavzP --stats USERNAME@IPADDRES: PATH_TO_BACKUP LOCAL_PATH_TO_BACKUP I then prompt my password for that user and bob's my uncle. This backups the necessary files from my remote server to my local device but does somebody know how I can automate this? Like automatic running this script every sunday? EDIT I forgot to mention that I let direct admin backup the files I need and then copy those files from the remote server to a local server.

• Painless way of consolidating files across multiple machines/OSes

  Just bought a NAS. So I thought I'd get all our photos, media files and pdfs consolidated, de-duplicated, de-junked and virus-checked and stick them all on it. We have 3 laptops, one running Windows, the others OSX. We have a file server running Windows - it was the result of an earlier attempt at a networked fileserver - and a Mac Pro that is also kind of a server (previous attempts at this job have resulted in most of our stuff being on it). Also memory cards/sticks, cd backups and so on. I would be grateful if anyone could suggest a strategy or, ideally, tool(s) I could use to solve this problem. It is probably no more than one or two terabytes of data in total, but I can imagine that going through it all manually, file-by-file may well drive me insane.

  At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

• Uninstall nginx on Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS remote machine

  I was given a server to setup, problem is this server was no reset, and the provider is quite slow on resetting it, so I have to completely uninstall some stuff it has, one of which is nginx. I had a few problems when doing setup on my local machine for nginx due to multiple installations of it, so I want to avoid the same mistake now. Problem is, I got no idea how nginx was installed here, and I need to remove it. When I access the server thro SSH i only have this folder $HOME/backups/nginx any idea how to uninstall this? Whenever I google it only come up with apt-get uninstall and so forth. Thank you

• Server Backup Solutions - compiling?

  I've been researching backup solutions for a LAMP environment to backup our databases and files alike. I'm looking for open source with a UI (so I'm less likely to screw it up). I downloaded http://www.bacula.org/en/ and a few others but they all talk about compiling first.... this doesn't seem like something I should need to do.... is there a linux package that maybe handles backups that I don't know about? I should also specify I'm looking to setup a backup server which backs up from several locations.

• Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

  On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

  I've inserted a sweet SSD into my MacBook Pro, but it had limited space. So I had to export 60 GB of Data to an external hard drive. But now, when I run TimeMachine to backup my stuff, of course it only backups what's on the system disk. Is there a way how to also backup the connected external hard drive together with TimeMachine? Maybe there's a trick to get this work, with a fake folder that's actually the mounted drive? What could I do?

• Windows Home Server is showing signs of death

  I have a Windows Home Server (HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server) and it started acting up about 4 weeks ago and a few days ago complained of a corrupt database and would I like to try and recover it? Yes, I would but I ended up losing all backups. I have to reboot it frequently for the client machines to be able to see it. I have 4 hard disks in the computer. I suspect that the primary hard disk is going bad. My first question: How can I confirm if it's going bad or not? I'm thinking about removing the primary disk and replacing it with one of the others and reloading the OS with the server restore disk. I know that I'll lose everything (but I recently did anyway) but is there any other reason why I should not do this?

• How do I know if 'hg clone' is doing the work remotely?

  I've got a very simple windows install of Mercurial on my machine. The 'central' repository is located at //mymachine/hg-repos/central. I want remote (VPN) users to be able to create clones of this repository in the hg-repos directory because it gets daily backups. I have given these users full control of the hg-repos directory. My question is this: If I'm on a remote machine, and I run the command: hg clone //mymachine/hg-repos/central //mymachine/hg-repos/central-copy ...is the remote machine doing most of the work? I don't want the client to have to download all of the central repository and then upload it all back because people are going to be using this from across the country. But I suspect this is what's happening here since it works so easily.

  Are there companies that sell new computers that support old ISA bus expansion cards? We have an aging computer running DOS that operates some machinery via an ISA interface board. Updated versions of this board (e.g. PCI, USB) are not available, and I am concerned about the long-term reliability of the 8+ year old computers we currently keep around as backups. If these newer ISA-capable machines exist, are there any general gotchas to be aware of in terms of compatibility with older expansion boards, ability to run DOS, etc.?

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• What's the easiest way to move from one Macintosh to another?

  Here's the story: Company bought me a $599 Mac mini (as of this writing, 2.26GHz/160GB HD/2GB RAM) I have it set up to some extent with software for development Company decides it needs a second Mac for QA I convince company to buy the $799 Mac mini for the second machine (as of this writing, 2.53GHz/320GB HD/4GB RAM), let me have it for development, and let QA have the $599 Mac mini Company does just that, now I have both So, what's the best way to move from one of these to the other? Just set up everything on the second one and be done with it? Can I transfer things from the first to the second somehow? I'm running Time Machine backups to an external drive on the $599 Mac mini, if that helps. Also both of these will be on the network at the same time, other than renaming one of the machines are there considerations to be had there?

  Here it goes. I have a folder that contains a not so large amount of space called /data/backup but I have been told that if I link that folder (/data/backup) to an even bigger folder area like /bigdata/backup for example, that I will be able to execute backups to the /data/backup folder because it will be just a link but the data will be seen in both folders and the latter one (/bigdata/backup) will contain the backup results but it will show on both folders and since the /bigdata/backup has far more disk space then the backup will no longer fail because of space problems in the /data/backup one. • How to delete "System Volume Information" folder from external drives?

  I'm running Vista Prof 32bit on a lenovo w500 thinkpad. I have four external drives and use 4 different PCs, that all have system volume information folders, taking up lots of space, and I can't delete them. I don't even know which computer's files are backed up on which external. I've used Thinkvantage rescue and recovery to delete all backups, as well as checked system restore settings to only use my main C drive. I checked all the PC's to ensure only the Main drive keeps system restore points and deleted previous versions. I ran Disc Clean up too. But I can't figure out how to get rid of these large folders from my external drives.

• How can I restrict the backuppc client user as much as possible? (rsync)

  I have backuppc making full backups of servers, but I'd like to be sure that my set up is as paranoid as possible. BackupPC is set up to backup via rsync, and it is set up to use a specific user on each client to be backed up. Because the backuppc client user has to have access to every file on the client machine and the ability to ssh into the machine without an interactive password, I'm a little nervous about securing the clients, and I'd like to know I haven't overlooked any options. Here's what I have in place: in the client user's authorized_keys file, i've included from="IPTOSERVER",command="/usr/bin/rsync" before the user's public key, so that the user can only login coming from the BackupPC server. Next, in the sudoers file, I've added this line: backuppc ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/rsync to allow root-level permissions only for the rsync command for that user. Are there other user, policy, or ssh restrictions that I can add while still allowing the backup pc client user to rsync all files?

• Auto backup a user folder to a usb when usb is plugged in

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into.   I saw a similar question for linux, but nothing for windows. I'm getting a new 1TB drive for my dev box @ work. The OS will be Windows 7 Pro with 8GB of RAM and just the single 1TB drive. Backups are not a concern, and I won't be storing large multimedia files. I want the fastest possible performance for general windows usage and for compilation. I will defrag nightly with a smart defragger liker perfectdisk. Should I just go with a single partition, or is there some way I can lay things out for the best performance?

• Little server for a little network: Asus TS Mini + Windows Home Server or other?

  Hello, I'm building a little network with 4 computer a plotter, 3 printers an a HP Fax/Scan/Copy/Print machine. The network is connected to the web by a D-Link router/firewall. I would like to add little server to have file sharing (reachable via VPN from outside by a single user-road-warrior), automatic backups. I would like to avoid big electrics bills or, to say It in a green way, I would like to avoid useless power consumption made by a big server with hot-plug, Raid, double PSU because I don't need all this stuff. The server must work 24/7 and the budget is between 400€ and 1000€. I'm evaluating the Asus EEE Box (with XP), a TranquilPC (with XP), a FitPC (again with XP), and an Asus TS Mini (with Windows Home Server). I like the latter but since I'm Europe I don't know where I can buy It. Do you have any suggestion/experience to share with me about: which hardware do I have to buy ? which O.S. ?

• Smart backup software

  I use a laptop on daily basis. As I have a lot of important data there it would be nice to do backups of some directories every day. Can you recommend a specific application that would take care of it? Maybe there is an app that would instantly commit changes I make in a directory on my laptop to the backup folder? The important thing is that I have some big files (a few GB's) that have some minor changes very often. I'm talking about VirtualBox disk images. It would be nice if the software could handle it smartly. Also notice that I'd like to store it on an external usb HDD, which sometimes isn't plugged in.

  Does anyone know of a command or tool to create disk snapshots on Windows 7 (client SKU)? I see vssadmin.exe has a "create shadow" option, but that's available only on server SKUs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788055(v=ws.10).aspx I've a backup tool that replicates changes (creations, modifications and deletions to files and directories) since last backup, to my backup volume. Before each time this happens I want to create a persistent snapshot on my backup volume. I could then mount previous snapshots to view previous backups achieving a behavior similar to that of TimeMachine in OS X.   I'm new to Solr: I've successfully installed Tomcat and Solr 4.3.1 webapp, and two collections on a CentOS 6.4 machine. Now, my server is in production and I need to make backups of solr. So, I would like to know what is the best way to backup solr... For the moment I'm dooing: stop tomcat = tar of my solr home = start tomcat, but I've read that is not a good solution? Moreover, this implie to stop all the tomcat which have other webapps than solr. I've also heard that there is a script named "backup" in solr home bin's folder ? but my bin folder is empty :( I don't want to make an another slave server with replication, for me it's not a backup solution because my backup are supposed to be send to a bacula backup server all nights. There is no builtin solution that I can work around to make a script ? like a mysqldump for Mysql servers. Thanks for help !
