  • Is it okay for an application to check for automatic updates in less than 20 hour interval?

    I have a desktop application that has the ability to automatically update itself on the next restart (without the user's consent - but this is another issue altogether). Assuming that the user would never notice anything related to application updating (such as a progress bar, or pop-up requiring restart), and that our server would support the request spam load, is there any reason why it should not check for updates in less than 20 hour interval? The reason I'm asking this is because all applications that I know that have auto-update capability check for update every 20 to 24 hours and at startup. I was just wondering if there was an ethical rule about it, or simply because of the risk of overloading the server.

  • CPU Limits for Application Pools in IIS 7.5

    I see that in iis 7.5 I can set a CPU % utilization limit for a specified amount of time for an application pool. I can have also have it kill the worker process if this limit is violated. If tell it to do this, will the worker process automatically restart after it is killed, or is manual intervention required? Over at Stack Overflow there is the mention that it can restarted at the completion of the interval...

    I increased my application pool memory size from default to 500 mb. and i have IIS 7.5. My server sometimes falling down (service unavailable) and i don't know the reason. I did couple of changes at the same day that i changed memory size in iis and from that days i am getting this problem in one of my servers. Is there anybody can tell me what is the right way to increase memory and what can be the problems???? Thankss Roni

  • Which Computer Organization & Architecture book is good for me?

    I'm always interested in learning the inner working of things. I started with C programming and then learnt Operating systems (from stallings) and then linkers & loaders and then assembly language after reading these now I want to go into little more depth. Computer Architecture. I feel that makes everything clear. As per SO archives these are the two good books: Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, 4th Edition Computer Organization and Design, Fourth Edition, ~ David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy But I've browsed through the contents of these books and found that they don't exactly meet my needs. I want to learn more about caches, Memory Management Unit , mapping b/w virtual memory & physical memory I'm no way interested in other ISAs like MIPS etc.. I'm IA32 and X86-64 fan and I want to stick to it. I'm not a hardware developer I don't want to details like circuit diagrams or How is L1, L2 & L3 caches are implemented? I want to know the parallel processing technologies like HyperThreading at the architecture level but again I don't want to design them. I liked the table of Contents of - Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach, 4th Edition but Quantitave Approach? Seriously?? I want to know the details of current technologies and I dont want to spend reading 200 pages of outdated old technologies ( I experienced this while learning ASM}

  • Customer Spotlight - CSX: Charles Pack

    A couple of weeks ago, I had the distinct privilege of facilitating a training session with CSX.  CSX is a wonderful customer.  They've been a dedicated Oracle customer for many years. They have quite an extensive Oracle footprint including Server Technologies, Fusion Middleware and E-Business Suite products.  They also utilize Oracle's Solution Support Center offering from Advanced Customer Services, for their Database products. I'm always on the lookout for Oracle gems and I discovered one at CSX. Before my session began, I met with Charles Pack.  In my view, he's an Oracle guru.  Don't take my word for it, just read any of the books he's authored or co-authored and the one soon to be released.  Just looking at his bookshelf, I saw titles going back to Oracle 7 & 8, as well as a Solaris 2.x book.  Remember those?   Anyway, Charles is a technologist and a manager (and wears numerous other hats too).  I had a wonderful time talking with Charles and getting to know him.  What do you consider keys to your personal success?  Inability to quit.  When I decide that I will accomplish something, I will, regardless of the nature of the challenge.  Never quitting means a perpetual drive for change and progress and setting examples for others to follow.  The reason I write OCP books is because I can provide a path for people to improve their knowledge of the product, gain a certification, and reach their professional goals. What do you consider the most important part of your job?  Negotiations.  We all have competing goals, incentives and finite resources, but we should all have the same common goal – progress.  So finding the way for all parties to progress is the most important thing we do. What is the most important part of your relationship with Oracle?  Oracle provides solutions – not just products - that are critical to our business success.  So continuous communication regarding education, services, product roadmaps and shared goals is the most important part of our ongoing relationship.   • Is a Model Driven Architecture in Language Oriented Programming (MPS) feasible at this time

    As a side project I am developing some sort of DSL where I describe a data model, and generate desired code files from it. I believe this is called Model Driven Architecture. My partial existing implementation uses C#, CodeDOM, XML and XSLT to do this manually. I discovered there already exist better environments to do this in. The one which fascinated me the most is called MPS, which follows the Language Oriented Programming paradigm. This article, written by a cofounder of JetBrains was a real eye opener for me. I truly believe LOP has a very good chance of becoming the next big programming paradigm once it has broader support. From my short experience with MPS, I noticed it is still mainly Java-oriented. My question is, how feasible is it to generate code files for other (multiple) languages instead of just Java. I don't need full language support from the start, so preferably, I need to be able to implement a language in a agile way. E.g. first support only one type, add access modifiers, ... Perhaps some other (free) environment already provides this out of the box. P.S.: I find it important to have a lot of control over the naming conventions and such of the generated code. This is one of the reasons why I started my own implementation.

  • C# Role Provider for multiple applications

    I'm making a custom RoleProvider that I would like to use across multiple applications in the same application pool. For the administration of roles (create new role, add users to role, etc..) I would like to create a master application that I could login to and set the roles for each additional application. So for example, I might have AppA and AppB in my organization, and I need to make an application called AppRoleManager that can set roles for AppA and AppB. I am having troubles implementing my custom RoleProvider because it uses an initialize method that gets the application name from the config file, but I need the application name to be a variable (i.e. "AppA" or "AppB") and passed as a parameter. I thought about just implementing the required methods, and then also having additional methods that pass application name as a parameter, but that seems clunky. i.e. public override CreateRole(string roleName) { //uses the ApplicationName property of this, which is set in web.config //creates role in db } public CreateRole(string ApplicationName, string roleName) { //creates role in db with specified params. } Also, I would prefer if people were prevented from calling CreateRole(string roleName) because the current instance of the class might have a different applicationName value than intended (what should i do here? throw NotImplementedException?). I tried just writing the class without inheriting RoleProvider. But it is required by the framework. Any general ideas on how to structure this project? I was thinking make a wrapper class that uses the role provider, and explicitly sets the application name before (and after) and calls to the provider something like this: static class RoleProviderWrapper { public static CreateRole(string pApplicationName, string pRoleName) { Roles.Provider.ApplicationName = pApplicationName; Roles.Provider.CreateRole(pRoleName); Roles.Provider.ApplicationName = "Generic"; } } is this my best-bet?
