• Can not use keyboard on unity

  Dear Ubuntu Community, currently I am using Ubuntu 14.04, and few hours ago, an update notifier prompted to install an update. After update finished, it ask for system restart, I think there is some kernel update etc. The problem start after restart, I can type password when login, but after entering unity desktop, my keyboard become suddenly unusable, system doesn't respond to any key press, after few minutes, it lock the screen automatically, but still I can't type password to unlock the screen. I tried to logout (mouse is working properly), and login again, try starting onscreen keyboard, but still have no luck, system still doesn't respond to the key press. I tried to login in console, and keyboard working well, tried to install xfce, and keyboard also working properly, keyboard also working properly when login to unity as guest, it only not working when I login using my account. I also try to reset unity config via unity-tweak-tool --reset-unity , but still no luck any suggestion to resolve this?

• Ubuntu on Thinkpad Edge 11

  Hi, I think a community wiki on problems (and solutions) when installing Ubuntu (10.10) on a Thinkpad Edge 11 would be nice (because I just got one ;)). I'll contribute with my own problems and solutions, and hope others will join too. Thinkwiki entry for the Edge 11 Known problems: No wifi-driver, solution: answer #1, answer #2 Fan is load, even though it's on auto. No solution. Thinkfan is a possible solution, but correction values for sensors should be supplied (mapping sensors to specific areas). Also, one sensor is between -100C and +100C - maybe some kind of deactivation would help.

• How can I compile an IP address to country lookup database to make available for free?

  How would I go about compiling an accurate database of IP addresses and their related countries to make available as an open source download for any web developer who wants to perform a geographic IP lookup? It seems that a company called MaxMind has a monopoly on geographic IP data, because most online tutorials I've seen for country lookups based on IP addresses start by suggesting a subscription to MaxMind's paid service (or their less accurate free 'Lite' version). I'm not completely averse to paying for their solution or using the free one, but the concept of an accurate open source equivalent that anyone can use without restriction appeals to me, and I think it would be useful for the web development community. How is geographic IP data collected, and how realistic is it to hope to maintain an up-to-date open version?

• atheros wireless ar9285 driver

  I have been having problems with wireless on Ubuntu 10 and above, Mint 11 and above. The problem is in the driver for the wireless... I can see that there is no driver installed and yet it works but reduced a lot, for example: on windows 7 ultimate 100% on distance of 1 meter (currently running) Mint Cinnamon 15 on same distance 70% when it goes under the 40 % it simply disconnects and than takes a lot of time to connect again I am new to Linux and I don't know anything about programming, yet I love the interface and look of the OS but don't want to reject it for couple of problems. There is, however, a problem with brightness control on laptop, it shows the notification and slider but with no effect The question is: Can somebody explain to me where to download and how to install the ar9285 driver for atheros wireless card laptop acer emachines eme529? or can someone explain this to me only for the LINUX MINT 15 http://www.jrhenkelmann.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34 because the synaptic's interface is different than of mint 15 I KNOW this is Ubuntu community but the problems persist in all Linux versions

• A Change of Seasons...

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • Coming back from (blog) retirement

  So, it has been more than 3 years without a single blog post. I wished I could have a decent excuse for it, but in the end, I guess it boils down to laziness and procrastination. :-) Even though I learned a lot in that period (and added a feel tricks to my bag), I couldn’t find the will to sit down and write. I hope all my readers (yes mom and dad, I’m talking to you) have not been disappointed. I will try really hard not to let routine take over. I don’t expect I will be the most active blogger in the community, but hopefully a couple of posts per month is a good target to aim.

• Ubuntu hangs frequently

  I have an Athlon x2 7750, 2GB RAM and I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on 8Gb moser baer pen drive. Software I installed are: apache2, php5, mysql-server, mysql-workbench, komodo-edit, anjuta. I also wanted gimp but I stopped. Problem is Ubuntu stops responding after 3-4 minute and start responding again for 3-4 minutes. and this continues. I'm use Windows 7 and do not know much about Linux, I wanted to install it on my hard disk. Can community help me on how to get smooth Ubuntu???

• One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

  It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. Having this attitude has been educational and it has let me produce work that I'm exceptionally proud of but it has also made me miss deadlines and disappoint people. • Control external monitor brightness

  Hello Ubuntu community, I can control the brightness of my DELL U2713HM connected with DisplayPort via the command: ddccontrol -p -r 0x10 -w 53 where in this example the number 53 represents the brightness level (range 0 to 100). But I don't know how to link the command to my brightness keys on my keyboard. I searched already, but just found answers to integrated laptop screens. In /sys/class/backlight is the folder acpi_video0 with some subfolders and files. The file actual_brightness contains a number from 0 to 20, which is changing when I press the brightness keys. How do I get my external monitor listed as a device in /sys/class/backlight ? PS: I am running a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install with integrated graphics Intel HD4000.

I am not able to get good at it even though I code everyday. suppose I solve one problem, I will wander from solution to solution and implement some other solution. I cant focus much. I get many defects for the code I write. I afraid of code I dont know why if I dont finish it on time my boss will fire me etc. I enjoy coding but not all the time. How to increase patience? I always wonder how do I become the best coder like many exceptional programmers. • Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

• MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.

• PAE on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having trouble using PAE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit. I recently upgraded from 4 to 8gb of RAM but PAE doesn't appear to have picked this up. When I run "grep --color=always -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo" I get pae in the list. When I run "dmidecode | grep Size | grep MB" Installed Size is 3825 but the Maximum Total Memory Size: 8192 MB. When I check the BIOS it says there is 8192 MB available and the computer fully supports I have followed everything I can find on the internet (including this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE) and nothing is working. My Computer is a Toshiba Portege m750. It has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Bought in 2009 Thanks, JamesStewy
