• Creating a webserver from scratch

  I know this is going to sound a humongous task and many of you would think why in the world would you want to do so or why re-invent the wheel. However I just want a project I can work on the side see how it goes and experiment ( I got a thirst for learning something new and this is a great challenge). Question Where would I start creating a server-side scripting like php, asp and (now) node.js I would like to have a few examples, and most importantly a CODEX/documentation where I can learn and find out more how it works. • Cookieless domain alternative

  I have only one folder that would benefit from a cookieless state, therefore setting up a whole subdomain for that seems a bit overkill for now, so I was wondering if deleting the cookie using mod_header in that specific folder would be enough or if it truly requires a different subdomain/domain ? For example, a .htaccess containing this in the /js subfolder of a webapp ? Header unset Set-Cookie

• How to troubleshoot this memory usage?

  I have a classifieds website. I use PHP, MySql, and SOLR. Solr uses a Servlet Container, in my case JETTY, which is java application. I just noticed that something was terribly wrong on my website. I opened the terminal and entered the "top" command and noticed that JAVA was EATING all the cpu and mem. Now I thought "Ok, maybe I need more mem and cpu" So I increased it. But along with the increase the java app started eating more. This has never happened before, and it is either a bug, or a hack of some kind. Anyways, I need to troubleshoot this now, and so I wonder how do I do this? Can I somehow pinpoint exactly when the memory usage started to go up from some error log? How does one troubleshoot this? How do I prevent it? Is it possible to prevent too many requests somehow, if they are within a timeline? Thanks

• Resources started with slash .htaccess redirection

  I have moved old version of webpage to some subdirectory: http://www.smth.com/old/. But all resources (images, css, etc.) in HTML are linked with slash symbol at the start. So browser still tries to load them from root path. For example old/test.html contains: <img src="/images/lma_logo.ico" /> <!-- not working !--> <img src="images/lma_logo.ico" /> <!-- working !--> How can I rewrite ulrs to load resources from the "old" dir if urls still starts with "/"?

• some issues with removing www and redirecting index.html

  Hello Fellas, I am having trouble doing what i want to do with the following setup. I would like to remove all WWW, and also forward index.html to root dir. I would like this to be for all domains, so i am doing inside httpd.conf directory directive. I tried many variations with no success. I need to know how to set privileges of me (as a user). I am the only user, but I want access to everything, but I don't want to manage my VPS logged in as root. So I am creating a username. Anybody have a list of privileges, what they mean and how to set them? Thanks

• Fully Qualified Domain name on Ubuntu Server

  I've setup a LAMP server on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and have also installed Virtualmin. This is my first attempt at setting up a server of any sort. I set up one virtual host using Virtualmin and so far so good. Some odd things are happening though, such as when I type in my primary domain into a browser, I see the contents of the virtual server instead of what should be in the default directory. I'm going to use 123.345.789 and example.co.uk instead of my actual ip and domain name's if thats ok. I checked my hostname by using hostname -f and got production1 as my response The contents of my /etc/hosts file is (ip's and domain changed to something generic for this post): 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain 123.456.789 production1.example.co.uk 123.456.789 production1 shouldn't my FQD be production1.example.co.uk? How can I go about changing this?, a simple step by step instruction would be great! thanks in advance.

• Website & Forum sharing the same login credentials ?

  I am going to be running a small site (100 hits a week maybe) and I am looking for a quick and easy way to share login information between the main website, a control panel (webmin, cpanel, or something), and the forum. One login needed to access any of the three. The website won't have use for the login, per say. But it will display "logged in" when you are on the website. • How to allow only specific directories to use htaccess?

  Currently in apache2.conf I have AllowOverride all set for /var/www which simply allows htaccess for all the sites on the server (which is Ubuntu, 9.04). However, I'd rather only allow overrides in each site root directory and nothing else. In other words, /var/www/site1, /var/www/site2, etc. can have a htaccess, but all other directories including /var/www and /var/www/site1/content cannot. Is there a way to do this without having to write a rule for every site on the server?

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

  I've inherited a poorly designed web app, which has a certain file that needs to be publicly accessible, but that file is inside a directory which should not. In other words, I need a way to block all files and sub-directories within a directory, but over-ride it for a single file. I'm trying this: # No one needs to access this directly <Directory /var/www/DangerousDirectory/> Order Deny,allow Deny from all # But this file is OK: <Files /var/www/DangerousDirectory/SafeFile.html> Allow from all </Files> </Directory> But it's not working- it just blocks everything including the file I want to allow. Any suggestions?

• Server taking too long to respond error

  Hi, This is my first post on serverFault and my first entry in to web server configuration. The hardware and software. CPU: GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.el5 Memory: 2Gb Background. I am running a small database (MySQL), around 1000 records with each record containing 44 fields. At the start of each day “00:01” the tables are cleared and populated with fresh data. The are 10 remote PCs all running Winodws XP and Firefox internet browser. All remote PC’s are connected to the internet using a min 4Gb broadband connection. Each remote PC runs a URL which displays a dynamic page of data which is refreshed every 20 seconds. This is a continual process 24 hours a day. I problem I am having is on odd occasions throughout the day the PC browser error with “Server taking too long to respond error”. What I am trying to find our is if I have the correct setting in the httpd.conf file on the server. Any help or advice anyone can provide would be very helpful.   cPanel sent me the following email: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on ***.***.com! While processing the log files for user ***, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 04:41:14 up 15 days, 22:36, 0 users, load average: 7.66, 7.84, 8.00 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). How can I lower the load?

• Limiting to the ServerName in Apache2

  I have 2 sites defined in my Apache2. Each one has a servername. For example: Server 1 (first in sites-enabled) responds to www.example.com Server 2 (second in sites-enabled) responds to www.example2.com Ok, the problem is when I type the server IP in the URL, the first server responds. How could I limit the response to only specifying its servername? I would like to block the IP calls. If that is not possible, I would like the second server to respond, not the first. I cannot change the order because there are aliases defined in the second server that would override the first server config.

I also have a http://example.no-ip.org domain which contains some content I would like to appear under the same domain. Can I setup a .htaccess file at http://www.example.com/proxy/ which proxies the files at http://www.example.no-ip.org/files/ Similarly, could I host an entire domain in the same way?, e.g. http://www.example2.com/ proxying http://example.no-ip.org/files2/ Alternatively, if someone were to say "That's stupid, use this free (or super-cheap) dynamic DNS host:" I would probably accept that answer.

  We have a Windows Server 2003 machine running Apache2.2. Most of the time there is no load on the server, but we have a notification program on 3400 PC's that can request a small web page that plays a 64KB .wav file. When an event occurs those 3400 PC's all request the web page over the course of 3 minutes. On a few machine we saw the browser sit in the "connecting" state for a little over a minute before the page painted. What is happening, and how can we speed this up?

• Git push on localhost with htaccess

  I am looking into setting up a remote git repo. To start with I have created it on my Windows machine using xampp following this guide. All works fine except when I try to add some security, as per step 6 of the guide (for when I migrate it to my main web server). I have added passwords by using passwd and adding htaccess to the htdocs folder. This works fine (I have checked in my web browser), but when I try and push I get prompted for my password the it fails with a error (code 22). $ git push origin master Password for 'http://git@localhost': error: Cannot access URL http://git@localhost/s.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed Any ideas?
