Unfortunately our career services center is terrible and the likely hood of finding a job through them is minimal. • Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?

• dot42 vs Xamarin to develop in C# for Android phones [on hold]

  does anyone have experience with both dot42 and Xamarin to develop C# apps for Android? Could you please say why one should prefer one over the other? I like the free Visual Studio integration that is offered by dot42 (while Xamarin requires a subscription for this, and the business one which is quite expensive). • Online iPad 1&2 emulators give different results compared to the real thing

  I'm designing a centered website (jQuery Isotope). Thre sandbox is here. I have used some online iPad 1&2 emulators to test how the site is viewed on these devices. Then, I managed to get hold of the real thing. Result: on real iPads, the site is centered and the layout adjusts automatically as expected. In online iPad emulators, the site is not quite centered and additional Isotope elements are squeezed in. Of course, I trust the real thing more than online emulators, but why is this happening? To me, it feels like website testing with online emulators is not so reliable after all? If this question is wrong here, please move it or tell me where it should go.   I am an looking at a few different supplemental learning courses to help me beef up my skills but unsure which one to use. I am interested in PluralSight because I work for the government and they use all Microsoft technologies for the most part. I like the courses on PluralSight but the price tag is pretty hefty. I am not sure how good the courses are because I cannot view the ones I want so I am a tad bit skeptical. I am sure some of you have PluralSight, do you think its a good investment for your learning or should I just stick with books/internet? Any suggestions?

  I'm interested in the philosophical and architectural justification (or lack thereof) in using Java to develop in today's modern world (exclude mobile/embedded platforms of course). Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a back-end in Java? Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a front-end UI in Java?   The question is quite interesting as for me because I watched jobs adds and mostly they all: A) Require being located the same country a vacancy is B) Employers don't want to hire foreign programmers if they don't have H1B or something C) As a rule, most adds provide 6 month contract position I can keep adding the list for long time describing some job adds specifications, anyway, as a rule, most positions require non-employee cooperation status. I don't have a company for such kind of "making projects by a client order" so it is quite complicated; So I was trying, just, as for a statistics, to find out is there a way to be hired abroad as a remote programmer as if I get hired in my native city? The thing is not about being hired where I can be hired "because I am located this or that place" but the thing is about a possibility (not to relocate) which actually should provide nowadays technologies especially for IT specialists in many different fields; So the question is it possible to work any country in remote mode as if I am working in my own place? What do I need for that? Can you advice some useful web sites in this direction? If you can share your own experience I'd love to listen to. Any useful advices are much appreciated

• Authenticating users for a website

  I'm working on a website and I want to validate that an individual is an employee at one of a large number of companies (probably using their company's email address, which I don't know before hand). The idea being some users are the general public and others are from these companies. And I need some way to authenticate that the users claiming to be employees are being honest while still having a friendly enough UI. I did an informal survey of people I know and the domains and emails will match in a majority of cases but they might not always match exactly so you might have a company with a website foo.com and an email [email protected] (although foobar.com did redirect back to foo.com). And while I can easily check that I'm not sure what other variations might be out there (maybe fooLA.com and email [email protected], etc.)

In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

  I just found out about and started looking into the Ubuntu App Contest, and I wanted to double check the contest's stance on using open source libraries built by others that are freely available on the web. I read through the rules and some of the other Q&As, and it sounds like using these libraries would not be allowed (since it could mean the app isn't built from scratch, and the library would not be in the Ubuntu archive - although I could bundle the library with the app), and I just wanted to verify this assumption. • Windows Azure Horror Story: The Phantom App that Ate my Data

By just using the Azure Management Portal, you don’t get a lot of insight into what is happening inside your instances, which are just Windows VMs. This morning, I noticed something quite scary, and fittingly enough, it’s Halloween. I deleted a deployment after doing a new deployment and VIP swap. But, after a few minutes, the instance still appeared in my Stackify dashboard. I thought this odd, as we monitor these operations and remove devices that have been deleted. Digging in showed that it wasn’t a problem with Stackify. This instance was still there, and still sending data. You’ll notice though that the “Status” check shows that the instance no longer exists. And it gets scarier. I quickly checked the running services, and sure enough, the Windows Azure Guest Agent (which runs worker roles) was still running: “Surely, this can’t be” I’m thinking at this point. Knowing that this worker role is in our QA environment, it has debug logging turned on. And, using our log file tailing feature, I can see that, yes, indeed, this deleted deployment is still executing code. Pulling messages off queues. Sending alerts. Changing data. Fortunately, our tools give me the ability to manually disable the Windows service that runs this code. In the meantime, I have contacted everyone I know (and support) at Microsoft to address this issue. Needless to say, this is concerning. When you delete a deployment, it needs to actually delete. Not continue to eat your data. As soon as I learn more, I’ll be posting an update.

• How do I commit changes to a text file on button press?

  I've written a small app that creates a GUI for setting up uShare. Currently it depends heavily on the 'w' (write) and 'a' (append) functions to generate/edit ushare.conf file. But I've been trying to find a way for the app to store all the changes until a save button is pressed, and only then committing them to the actual file. I think that would be the best way of getting around having the user press enter every time they change any field (and indeed allow for GtkCheckButton).

• What is the next promotion for a scrum master

  I'm currently a scrum master. I have been offered a promotion to a role that will allow me to have a wider impact. (more involved in company wide architectural decisions, possible secondment to kick start major projects, etc). The role and title of the job has yet to be decided but my company are open to guidance from me. I'm happy I can mould the role to suit me and the company but I'm unsure about the job title that fits this role. Technical Evangelist has been suggested but i'm not sure that is the correct title. I'm keen to proceed down the technical route. What would you suggest? What other roles do people take after scrum master/technical lead? EDIT: (I am aware that my current role is a mix of a technical lead and scrum master role, but that's how we do it in my company :) )

  How do I pass a test of programming knowledge for a higher score on oDesk.com? I have passed php and javascript tests but I have passed them with low scores and barley passing. This doesn't look too appealing for clients and I'm afraid that is the reason I am not being hired for a job. I know I am capable of doing web work and such. • Interfacing the payment systems

  Hello all. I'm a complete newbie to using online payment systems for web projects, and can't really think of where to start. Let's assume that web system in question needs to generate some income online, and the business idea/functionality is in place, while organizing cash flow is the only unsolved problem. Points of interest are how the custom developed software interfaces to payment systems, and how the resulting income is available to the owner. I do understand that there are probably hundreds of systems out there, but to be more specific on which of them suit, I'd have to know how they work, and that's where I don't feel like understanding much.
