• Is there a way in PHP to keep a file open and process each line and subsequent lines?

  I want to write a php script that keeps the apache_log file open and "listen" to the log and deal with each log entry as it happens. I'm thinking that I need to open a file, get the number of lines, then do this again in a loop - and when the size is different, read the new lines and process them. Am I barking up the wrong tree, or is there a silly easy solution that I have missed? Chris

• GCC, -O2, and bitfields - is this a bug or a feature?

  Today I discovered alarming behavior when experimenting with bit fields. For the sake of discussion and simplicity, here's an example program: #include <stdio.h> struct Node { int a:16 __attribute__ ((packed)); int b:16 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int c:27 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int d:3 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int e:2 __attribute__ ((packed)); }; int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { Node n; n.a = 12345; n.b = -23456; n.c = 0x7ffffff; n.d = 0x7; n.e = 0x3; printf("3-bit field cast to int: %d\n",(int)n.d); n.d++; printf("3-bit field cast to int: %d\n",(int)n.d); } The program is purposely causing the 3-bit bit-field to overflow. Here's the (correct) output when compiled using "g++ -O0": 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 0 Here's the output when compiled using "g++ -O2" (and -O3): 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 8 Checking the assembly of the latter example, I found this: movl $7, %esi movl $.LC1, %edi xorl %eax, %eax call printf movl $8, %esi movl $.LC1, %edi xorl %eax, %eax call printf xorl %eax, %eax addq $8, %rsp The optimizations have just inserted "8", assuming 7+1=8 when in fact the number overflows and is zero. Fortunately the code I care about doesn't overflow as far as I know, but this situation scares me - is this a known bug, a feature, or is this expected behavior? When can I expect gcc to be right about this? Edit (re: signed/unsigned) : It's being treated as unsigned because it's declared as unsigned. Declaring it as int you get the output (with O0): 3-bit field cast to int: -1 3-bit field cast to int: 0 An even funnier thing happens with -O2 in this case: 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 8 I admit that attribute is a fishy thing to use; in this case it's a difference in optimization settings I'm concerned about.

  I have a view (userControl) and I am overriding it's OnLoad and OnLayout methods . When view is closed the OnLayout method is executed and the call to base.OnLayout(e) fire the OnLoad method. What is causing the OnLoad to be called and how can I avoid this behavior? Regards.

  I'd like to know how to get a list of the windows requiring user attention from the Windows taskbar. Windows requiring attention appear with a flashing orange color within the Windows taskbar. Un-focused MSN Messenger conversation windows are a good example of this behavior: they turn orange as soon as a remote user sends an instance message. My code targets the Windows 7 platform, but working on older Windows OS would be nice too.

  Hello there, I have two Services called TemplateService, TemplateReportService (both defined in one WCF Service Library) to be exposed to the client application. And, I am trying to host these services under Windows Service. Can anyone please guide me if App.config in Windows Service will be same as the one in WCF Library?   I want to slight variation of the custom cell code example from the MS website How to: Customize Cells and Columns in the Windows Forms DataGridView Control by Extending Their Behavior and Appearance by passing an argument to the custom cell constructor. Public Sub New(ByVal a As Object) End Sub but then when I run the code it throws and exception MissingMethodException occured No parameterless constructor defined for this object. Does this mean that custom cells must have a parameterless constructor? Thanks.

• Why can't I get my Azure, WCF, REST, SSL project working? What am I doing wrong?

  I'm trying to get SSL, WCF and REST under Azure, but the page won't even load. Here are the steps I followed: 1) I mapped the www.mydomain.com CNAME to my azuresite.cloudapp.net 2) I procured an SSL certificate for www.mydomain.com and properly installed it at my azuresite.cloudapp.net hosted service project 3) I deployed my WCF REST service to Azure and started it. Below is my web.config configuration. The http (non-https) binding version worked correctly. My service URL, http: //www.mydomain .com/service.svc/sessions worked just fine. When I deployed the project with the web.config below, enabling SSL, https: //www.mydomain .com/service.svc/sessions does not even pull up at all. • Implementing a recently used or favorites dropdown in JComboBox

• Is this a situation where Qt Model/View architecture is not useful?

  Hi, I am writing a GUI based application where I read a string of values from serial port every few seconds and I need to display most of the values in some type graphical indicator(I was thinking of QprogressBar maybe) that displays the range and the value. Some of the other data that I am parsing from the string are the date and fault codes. Also, the data is hierarchical. I wanted to use the model/view architecture of Qt because I have been interested in MVC stuff for a while but have never quite wrapped my brain around how to implement it very well. As of now, I have subclassed QAbstractItemModel and in the model I read the serial port and wrap the items parsed from the string in a Tree data structure. I can view all of the data in a QtreeView with no issues. I have also began to subclass QAbstractItemView to build my custom view with all of the Graphical Indicators and such. This is where I am getting stuck. It seems to me that in order for me to design a view that knows how to display my custom model the view needs to know exactly how all of the data in the model is organized. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of Model/View? The QTreeView I tested the model with is basically just displaying the model as it is setup in the Tree structure but I don't want to do that because the data is not all of the same type. Is the type of data or the way you would like to present it to the user a determining factor in whether or not you should use this architecture? I always assumed it was just always better to design in an MVC style. It seems to me like it might have been better to just subclass QWidget and then read in from the serial port and update all of subwidgets(graphical indicators, labels, etc...) from the subclass. Essentially, do everything in one class. Does anybody understand this issue that can explain to me either what I am missing or why I shouldn't be doing it this way. As of now I am a little confused. • Silverlight DataGrid vertical scrollbar issue

  I have a DataGrid in my silverlight application and I'm wondering how to get the same behavior for the vertical scrolling as the horizontal scrolling. When I resize the browser horizontally, The app will bunch up all the controls and the horizontal scrollbar will appear, however when I resize it vertially, the controls at the bottom of the app just move out of view. Does anyone know any tricks to handle something like this?

  In nHibernate, if you do an HQL query with "join fetch" to eagerly load a child collection, nHibernate will ignore SetMaxResults and SetFirstResult and try to retrieve every single item from the database. Why? This behavior is specific to HQL, as ICriteria supports eager loading (with an outer join, though) and LIMIT. Ember.js itself works fine, but I haven't found any good way to "bind" PhoneGap events to views. For instance, I would like to handle backbutton event and remove a view on it. It would be nice to define behavior in view class and call document.addEventListener when instance of the view is appended and call document.removeEventListener when view instance removed.

• extern "C" has no effect in msvc++ 9.0

  I manage project for JNI for both compilers: MSVC++ 8.0 and 9.0, my cpp file contains following implementation: extern "C" { JNIEXPORT jlong JNICALL Java_context_ServiceProviderContext_StartServiceProvider (JNIEnv * env, jclass, jstring jspath){ ..... } With help of depends.exe utility I can see that MSVC 8.0 successfully exports function as it is expected: Java_context_ServiceProviderContext_StartServiceProvider But compiling under MSVC 9.0 gets me crazy it exports like ignoring extern "C" at all. depends.exe shows me: _Java_context_ServiceProviderContext_StartServiceProvider@12 Does anybody know what exactly in 9.0 project that causes this behavior?

• Java object to XML Elements?

  I'm working on a webservices client app and I have it mostly working. I can retrieve and read data from the third-party webservice fine. Now I need to submit some data and I'm stuck. The classes for the objects I'm retrieving/submitting were generated from XSD files via the xjc tool. The part I'm stuck on is turning one of those objects into an XML tree to submit to the webservice. When I retrieve/send a request from/to the ws, it contains a 'payload' object. This is defined in java code as (partial listing): @XmlAccessorType(XmlAccessType.FIELD) @XmlType(name = "PayloadType", propOrder = { "compressed", "document", "any", "format" }) public class PayloadType { @XmlElement(name = "Compressed") protected String compressed; @XmlElement(name = "Document") protected List<String> document; @XmlAnyElement protected List<Element> any; protected String format; public List<Element> getAny() { if (any == null) { any = new ArrayList<Element>(); } return this.any; } } The only field I'm concerned with is the 'any' field which contains an XML tree. When I retrieve data from the ws, I read that field with something like this: ('root' is of org.w3c.dom.Element type and is the result of calling 'getAny().get(0)' on the payload object) NodeList nl = root.getElementsByTagName("ns1:Process"); // "ns1:Process" is an XML node to do something with if (nl != null && nl.getLength() > 0) { for (int i = 0; i < nl.getLength(); i++) { Element proc = (Element) nl.item(i); try { // do something with the 'proc' Element here... } catch (Exception ex) { // handle problems here... } } } Submitting data is where I'm stuck. How do I take a java object created from one of the classes generated from XSD and turn it into an Element object that I can add to the 'any' List of the payload object?? For instance, if I have a DailyData class and I create and populate it with data: DailyData dData = new DailyData(); dData.setID = 34; dData.setValues = "3,5,76,23"; How do I add that 'dData' object to the 'any' List of the payload object? It has to be an Element. Do I do something with a JAXBContext marshaller? I've used that to dump the 'dData' object to the screen to check the XML structure.   Has anyone had good experiences with any Java libraries for Graph algorithms. I've tried JGraph and found it ok, and there are a lot of different ones in google. Are there any that people are actually using successfully in production code or would recommend? To clarify, I'm not looking for a library that produces graphs/charts, I'm looking for one that helps with Graph algorithms, eg minimum spanning tree, Kruskal's algorithm Nodes, Edges, etc. Ideally one with some good algorithms/data structures in a nice Java OO API.

  I have an server (available via ssh) on the internet that my friend and I use for working on projects together. We have started using git for source control. Our setup currently is as follows: Friend created repository on server with git init named project.friend.git I cloned project.friend.git on server to project.jesse.git I then cloned project.jesse.git on server to my local machine using git clone jesse@server:/git_repos/project.jesse.git I work on my local machine and commit to the local machine. When I want to push my changes to the project.jesse.git on server I use git push origin master. My friend is working on project.friend.git. When I want to get his changes I do pull jesse@server:/git_repos/project.friend.git. Everything seems to be working fine, however, I am now getting the following error when I do git push origin master: localpc:project.jesse jesse$ git push origin master Counting objects: 100, done. • Efficient code to avoid circular references in c# object model

  I have an excel like grid where values can be typed referencing other rows To check for circular references when a new value is entered, i traverse the tree and create a list of values referenced thus far, if the current value is found in this list, i return an error thus avoiding a circular reference. This is infrequent enough where extreme performance is not an issue but... Question - is there a better way ? I'm told it's not the most optimal but no answer was provided so on to the experts @ SO :)
