• How to access an node of an LAN via WAN?

  Lets say I have a router that is connected to the Internet. An WAN IP address is given by ISP. It is using PPPoE ADSL, the IP address is not static, every time it connected, assigned a different IP address. There is an web server 192.168.0.100 running in the LAN. I heard something like DMZ + DynDNS can do the job? But not sure what these are and how they work. Any there way(s) to access the local node 192.168.0.100 via WAN, so that I can reach that node even I am not home. Thanks for any advice.

• What software works well for viewing massive TIFF images on Windows 7?

  Today I saw an article about a half-gig, 24000 square-pixel high-res composite image of the moon. (This is a much smaller version of the image) I find astronomy interesting, so I thought I'd download it and take a look. With 4GB of RAM and an i5 processor, I figured my computer could handle it. Unfortunately, the built-in Windows Picture Viewer didn't do such a great job. While it opened the file without a problem, zooming in was ineffective. The zoomed out image loaded, but zooming in just showed a scaled-up version of the zoomed-out version, not any detail: Closing the picture viewer also took a very long time, and the whole process used up much more RAM than the 500MB of the picture (usage went from 1.3GB to 3.8GB). What other software would work better for this? I would prefer something that is free and fairly simple. I don't really want to use an editor (like photoshop or GIMP), just a nice lightweight viewer. Any suggestions?

• Why can I not use the full capacity of my SSD?

  I am using Paragon to migrate Windows 7 to an SSD. The C drive which should be migrated is a 100GB partition. During the process, Paragon formats the SSD to 80GB. Why doesn't it take the 100 GB? It later fails because it thinks there isn't enough space on the SSD. However the SSD is 11GB bigger than the partition, and only 45GB of the partition were used anyway. How do I get around this? Is there another tool to do the same job which does it better ?

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate?   I got the job to design some reports with crystal reports XI for a user-group of nearby 20 peoples. Each user has his own printer on his desk. These printers are attached to the network and are served by a print server. The users have thin-clients and are served by citrix with desktops and so has each user his own windows default printer defined. All printers are from the same type and have some papertrays. the reports in question have to go on paper-tray number 3. I have one *.rpt File and so there is one possibility to define a printer and a paper-tray, but how do i define the windows 'default' printer?

• Enumerating network shares with NetBIOS

  Hello, I have a case where I need to find all connectable shares on my network, and preferably as much information about the share possible. I could do this manually but its quite a big network and it would be too slow. If I did it manually Im guessing I would do something like net view net use //hostname <browse it manually> This would however not give me hidden shares so its not a viable option. Does anyone know of a tool which can help me out in this case? I already tried Sysinternals ShareEnum but it did not work properly. It did a half decent job, but it gave me access denied on tons of shares that was actually open. Any tips in how I can script this is also appriciated. Thank you

• Get the interface and ip address used to connect to a specific host (ip)

  I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but I wasn't able to find it, so hopefully this will at least link someone to the right place. I want to find out my local interface and ip address used to reach a certain host. For instance, if I had 3 adapters connected to my box and they all three went to different networks, I'd like to know which of the three (specifically, its ip address) is used to reach my.local.intranet (in this case, it would be a vpn tunnel interface). I suspect this is a job for ifconfig or traceroute, but I haven't been able to find the correct switches. I'm running OSX 10.7 (Darwin) Thanks!

  At my new job, I have a production server with the following qualities: Windows (XP I think), ancient hardware Absolutely vital database No backups whatsoever Everyone in the company has full admin rights, the passwords are stored in a .txt on the global share No installers, except for the OS The machine itself is sitting on a wooden shelf 5 feet above the ground against an external wall with frequent truck traffic on the other side; the shelf is already bent from the constant load Hasn't been rebooted in $DEITY knows how long, my predecessor wasn't even sure if it would survive it UPS is installed, but since everything is hooked up to it, it would last 10 minutes tops No spare parts or hardware budget How do I make a full backup with minimal impact on the server? I'm not sure how close it is to a total meltdown. For all I know, plugging in a USB stick could kill the company, and of course it will be all my fault, since "it was running fine before you touched it". The ideal solution would be a VM, so I have a test environment as well (separate of course).

• Cisco ASA 5505 inside interface multiple ip addresses

  I have an issue this morning where I want to be able to assign multiple ip addresses to the inside interface to facilitate an ip range migration for an office. Namely from a 192.168.1.x range to the new range, with the minimum of interruption for those working in the office. (New DHCP leases will use the new range, whilst those still on the 192.168.1.x range can continue to work until their lease is renewed). However I can not for the life of me figure out how to achieve this, trying to create multiple interfaces for the job leads to complaints about the license only allowing 2 active interfaces.   Hi everyone I've got a cronjob that runs every minute and checks existence of a certain file. If there's no such file, job silently ends. If there is a file, then another script is started. That script removes the file when done. Its execution time can take up to 20 minutes. My questions are: Are there any flaws in this scheme? Is it ok to store such file in tmp? Can I be shure that nothing will attempt to remove it?

• btrfs won't run from cron

  I'm trying to set up a cron job to create a btrfs subvolume snapshot of my root partition. The command works perfectly if I run it from the command line, but nothing happens at the scheduled cron time. I've tried piping to logger and redirecting stdout/stderr to file, and not only is there no content, the file I'm logging to isn't even created. The cron command I have is as follows: 0 0 * * * /sbin/btrfs subvolume snapshot / "/snapshots/$(date +%Y-%m-%d)" I've tried prefixing it with /bin/bash, but that makes no difference. What am I missing?

• What would cause SQL 2008 Log Reader Agent to fail with "This process could not execute 'sp_replcmds

  I've seen this error message in other posts. They didn't seem to help resolving our issue. We are trying this with two SQL Server 2008 servers. I backed up my database from the source server and then restored it on our destination server. We setup basic Transaction Replication. The Snapshot Agent is working fine. The Log Reader Agent fails with the error above. Is it most likely a login issue for this job or QueryTimeout?

• IP-restricted port forwarding with iptables

  For an example, I have two authorized client computers, 1.1.1.1 and 2.1.1.1. My server running iptables is 3.1.1.1 and my firewalled web server is 4.1.1.1. When one of the authorized client IPs connects to 3.1.1.1 on port 80, I would like the connection to be forwarded to 4.1.1.1 on port 8888. If any other IP attempts to connect I would like it to refuse/drop the connection. What iptables config would accomplish this? Is there something more specific out there that would be better suited for this job?

• Does Windows Move command delete the file only on successful completion?

  This may be a stupid question, but I'm erring on the side of caution here. If I'm using Windows command line/batch files to Move a file from one server to another and we have a network failure, what will happen to the original file? I would assume it remains untouched until fully moved, and then deleted, but I need to be sure. My fear is that it deletes bytes as they are moved, which would be bad. If that isn't the case, is there a better way than Copying the file and Deleting after the copy completes? Thanks for your help. EDIT: I suppose super user would have been better. This is part of a job kicked off by code, so my first thought was to come here.

• chroot for unsecure programs execution

  Hi, I have never set-up a chroot-jailed environment before and I am afraid I need some help to do it well. To explain shortly what this is all about: I have a webserver to which users send python scripts to process various files that are stored on the server (the system is for Research purpose). Everyday a cron job starts the execution of the uploaded scripts via a command of this kind: /usr/bin/python script_file.py All of this is really insecure and I would like to create a jail in which I would copy the necessary files (uploaded scripts, files to process, python binary and dependencies). I already looked at various utilities to create jails but none of them seemed up-to-date or were lacking solid documentation (ie. the links proposed in How can I run an untrusted python script) Could anyone guide me to a viable solution to my problem? like a working example of a script that creates a jail, put some files in it and executes a python script? • Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 - does 32/64 depend on RAM?

  Just got in a Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 (Xeon E3-1225V1) and a (new, sealed, holographed, looks legit) copy of Windows Server 2008 32/64 (standard) to run on it for a pretty lightweight job (currently handled, adequately, by a terrifyingly old Optima P4 running Windows 2000 server - really lightweight, but long-past-due for replacement, without any particular need or excuse for server 2012...) The 64 bit disc sits there and does nothing. The 32 bit disc boots. I haven't spotted any mention of this in the TS130 Manual (I have now combed it, and find no mention of a need to populate in pairs - a preferred order to populate in, yes, but no mention of pairs being required) but I begin to wonder if it's due to the fact that the 4GB RAM suppled with it was a single DIMM, rather than a pair. Better for upgrading, but perhaps requiring an upgrade (or sidegrade) right away to install the x64 version?? Anyone know? I tried the 64-bit DVD on a desktop with an AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor which normally runs Windows7 in 64 bit, and it booted up just fine.

• User account automatically filling up with dead.letter file

  I have one user account on a server with about 400 accounts that is filling up automatically. The dead.letter file in the users home directory automatically grows until the account is full (about 10 - 40 Mb per day). The user is using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive mail. What can be causing this and how can I avoid it from happening? Right now I have an emergency cron-job to delete the file but I would like "real" solution. Edit: The server version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4) Edit 2: It seems mainly spam and I see different mailer headings (from php to Outlook Express) and a frequent appearing header is [email protected] Update: I have asked the hosting provider where I use that dedicated server to look into the problem as well, as it's their Control Panel that could be a cause of the problem.

• Mysterious xyz.event files appearing

  I am getting mysterious .event files - always empty, created by me a few weeks ago - in several local project directories. They are all Subversion checkouts. They are always named after the directory they reside in, so a directory named pagination will contain a pagination.event file. Does anybody know what this is? Possibly important information: I am working on a Windows 7 Workstation I use NuSphere's PHP IDE (no updates recently) I use TortoiseSVN for version control I set up a Windows 7 backup job recently that ran once, I can' remember when exactly. The event files seem to turn up only in repositories There is no external access to those repositories

• MS-Outlook add-on to move a new message to the same folder as the rest of the thread

  I'm forced to use MS-Outlook in my job, while I very much like the feature that shows all the messages of a discussion thread (that are stored in different folders) in the inbox when a new message is received for that thread, if the previous messages are in a different data file (which I'm forced to have as the MS-Exchange server quota is very very small) then the message list only shows the name of the data file and not the name of the folder where the messages are stored. As a result, because I file my message by context (i.e. all the emails for project A go into a "Project A" folder, etc), and its important for me to have all the messages in a single thread in the same folder, it is sometimes hard to figure out into which folder should I file the new message. It would be great help if there was some add-on or VBA script that I could add to my setup that will offer a shortcut key or a button to "file this message to the same folder as the previous messages in the conversation thread".

• Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

  I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

  I've just installed a Ubuntu for a file server. It will share a folder (samba) and employees of my company will save photos on that. Currently the total amount of the photos is about 100GB and every day 20MB will be added. My question is about backup plan. I want to backup the photos to a remote server using a cron job. I can think of 2 things. rsync git Image files won't be changed so rsync will do. But as people say, I must git all my data. What would you do? Thanks. Sam

• Windows Console .exe won't run if it's downloaded from the internet

  I have a nightly job on Windows Server 2003 that automatically updates itself by downloading its .exe from Amazon S3. I've noticed that when it performs the download and tries to run the newly downloaded .exe, it is immediately kicked back to the command line without actually running anything. I can verify this by sticking the new version of the code directly on the server and watching it execute successfully, then uploading it to the "update" server, running the bootstrapper then running the .exe and observing it fail to execute. I can only assume that this is due to Windows protecting me from running code from outside its trusted zone. How does a fella go about configuring it to allow code from this particular external location to execute? Thanks!

• Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

  Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).

Modifications of tables of really lot of data... What can I expect to find in the test of Excel?
