• Designing software interface for various screen sizes

  Hi, Nowadays we have screens like 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 in popular use and some even use 2560x1600 resolution while some older systems still rely on a 800x600 resolution. I am writing a software that looks good on a 1680x1050, but too small on a 1920x1200 and too large on a 1024x768. Do you have suggestions how to go for designing an application for various screen sizes? Things were a lot simpler before when we had little differences in resolutions, but now it seems there's no good way of handling this. I know this question is more about designing / layout than programming, but I bet this is more or less part of programmers life so I made this post here.

• Horizontal placement of components in JSF.

  Hi, Should be simple but I couldn't find the answer, I would like to place components horizontally instead of vertically. What I'm trying to achieve is a rich:toolbar with 2 or more rows. I've been trying to do that with a toolbar that has a panelgrid and two panelgroups like this: <rich:toolbar...> <f:panelgrid columns="1"...> <f:panelgroup id="row1" .../> <-- Should be horizontal placement <f:panelgroup id="row2" .../> <-- Should be horizontal placement <f:panelgrid/> <rich:toolbar/> So how do I make the panelgroup layout horizontal (Or should I use something else?) • Database design: Using hundred of fields for little values

  I'm planning to develop a PHP Web App, it will mainly be used by registered users(sessions) While thinking about the DB design, I was contemplating that in order to give the best user experience possible there would be lots of options for the user to activate, deactivate, specify, etc. For example: - Options for each layout elements, dialog boxes, dashboard, grid, etc. - color, size, stay visible, invisible, don't ask again, show everytime, advanced mode, simple mode, etc. This would get like 100s of fields ranging from simple Yes/No or 1 to N values..., for each user. So, is it having a field for each of these options the way to go? or how do those CRMs or CMS or other Web Apps do it to store lots of 1-2 char long values? Do they group them on Text fields separated by a special char and then "explode" them as an array for runtime usage? thank you

• Suggestions for VS+Resharper keyboard shortcuts on a Mac

  I just upgraded to a Macbook Pro as my development machine but still primarily develop .Net applications with Visual Studio and Resharper (via VMWare Fusion). By far, the biggest obstacle I'm running into is getting used to the keyboard layout change (ex. not being able to do ALT-Insert). Do any of you Windows-on-Mac veterans have any suggestions on how to ease the pain of transitioning (without moving to an external keyboard)? Are you changing mappings via VMWare's keyboard preferences? Or are you using something like AutoHotkey? Any other windows development tips for a Mac newb?

• Making Overlaid image transparent on touch in Android ?

  Hi All, I need help on making the touched areas of bitmap image transparent(seems like erasing) while I am moving my finger on that image. I am having a PNG file with Alpha channel in it. I want to turn the touched pixels to transparent so that, the user can feel that he is actually erasing it. For this I am using frame layout to load 2 layers. Down layer is for content and upper layer is an Imageview for erasing. I need erase the upper layer when user touch and move his finger on it. I am not getting how to make it transparent. can anyone please help me in this. If possible please direct me to any sample code, as I am very new to this image processing. Thanks in advance.

However, it's not actually giving me the max bid, it's just giving me the first one entered in to the database. • How can I explain to a programmer that CSS positioning has many benefits over table based layouts?

  I have a friend who wishes to work as a freelance web developer, but insists that tables are the way forwards for layouts. Several points he maintains in favour of tables: 1 This is what was taught at the beginning of 10 years of programming & computer science degrees. 2 Large companies use tables to achieve 'technical' things. 3 It saves time I have coded him some examples of CSS exactly matching table based layouts, and provided many links to articles explaining SEO and accessibility benefits. From the perspective of a client, I have been explaining to him that I wouldn't hire someone using outdated methods as their main strategy for layout. As he is my friend and I wish him every success, I believe it is important for him to gain the best start when pitching for work. The question again: How can I explain to a programmer that CSS positioning has many benefits over table based layouts?

  I'm looking for a well-documented, supported WPF component that provides an API for visualisation of 2D tree diagrams. Ideally something easy to use, customisable (i.e. supports various flavours of nodes and splines) and preferably with automated layout control. Tools that look good so far are GoXam (http://www.nwoods.com/components/silverlight-wpf/goxam-overview.htm) and yFiles WPF (http://www.yworks.com/en/products_yfileswpf_about.html). • SSIS - Can I get the column schema for a flat file source from a database?

  We receive a nightly data export from a vendor in the form of about 10 tab-delimited flat file without column headers. In addition, the vendor provides us with the SQL scripts for the database tables so that we can import the files into our system. Unfortunately, the vendor recently changed the schema for the flat files. Each file has upwards 150 columns, and having to go through the DB schema and adjust column types on a Flat File Data Source in SSIS is extremely time consuming, not to mention a royal pain. Since I know the file data layout in the database schema, is there any way I can dynamically pull that into a Flat File source to set the columns correctly? Or am I just stuck with manually setting everything?

  I am working on an custom container and I need a border for this container. I have a 15x15 image that I am creating a 9-slice border skin with. The issue that I am having is that the border skin does not appear the way that I had hoped it would. Here is a ss of the skin in place. Ideally I should have a transparent box with a 5 pixel border around it.   Ok, firstly this is not about forms this is about consistent layout as a user explores a site. let me explain: If we imagine a (non-ajax) digital camera online store, say someone was on the DSLR section and specified to view the cameras in Gallery mode and order by price. They then click onto the Compact camera's page. It would be in the users interests if the 'views' they selected we're carried over to this new page. Now, i'd say use a session - am i wrong? are there performance issues i should be aware of for a few small session vars ( ie view=1 , orderby=price) ?

• Where to store things like user pictures using Azure? Blob Storage?

  I have just migrated a project of mine for test cases to Microsoft's azure. But for functionalities similar to an avatar upload I need write access to the files on the harddrive. But this is a cloud, so this is not possible. How can I build such functionalities instead? Should I use the Blob Storage or is there a better solution? Does it make sense to store all website images (f.e. layout images) in the Blob Storage? So I would have a Cookie-free Domain for my static content?

  I have several custom controls (some kind of frames for content and layout management, like wrap panel), and would like to write unit tests for them. It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

• Background Image w/Quartz Drawing

  I'm using Quartz to do some basic drawing. I recently decided I wanted a background image for my app. So I went into my XIB file and added a UIImageView and set the background, looks good. However, when I run it, the Z-Index of the image is above my drawing. I googled a bit and found that you can do Layout Send to Back in IB...but that option is grayed out to me when I have my UIImageView selected. Is there an easy way to move this UIImageView permanently to the background? Is there perhaps an alternate method to doing this that I should consider? Thanks

• Is there a way to animate on a Home Widget?

  Hi All, I want to use an animation on a Home page Widget, i.e. an AppWidgetProvider. I was hoping to use the "Frame Animation" technique: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d-graphics.html#frame-animation which I've used successfully in an activity. But I can't translate that code to an AppWidgetProvider. Basically, in an AppWidgetProvider, I create and work with a RemoteViews object, which AFAIK doesn't provide me with a method to get a reference to an ImageView in the layout for me to call start() on the animation. There is also not a handler or a callback for when the widget displays so I can make the start() call. Is there another way this can be done? I suppose that I can probably do the animation on my own with very fast onUpdate() calls on the widget, but that seems awfully expensive.

  I'm running into a problem using dojo.connect() to connect an 'onclick' event with this button: <button dojoType="dijit.form.Button" widgetId="inbox_button" id="inbox_button">Inbox</button> and the code making the connection is: var inbox_button=dojo.byId("inbox_button"); dojo.connect(inbox_button,'onclick',function(){ var container=dijit.byId("center"); container.addChild(new dijit.layout.ContentPane({region: "left", content: "...", style: "width: 100px;"})) }); However, instead of executing the function when the button is clicked, ANY onclick event triggers the function, and I end up with a lot of children containers. Even though I'm pretty certain the .connect() function should be available as part of dojo's base functionality, I've 'required' it explicitly: dojo.require("dojo._base.connect"); Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

But for some elements I wanted to apply following change: when I add width to .field class layout goes to blazes: element with .field class appears under element with field-label class.   I have been working on the mobile version of my rails application.I am using the approach of using the same controller and rendering a mobile view when the request is from a mobile device. I am using jquery mobile in mobile views. For mobile views I did not use any layout for the views because it is the same as loading the required files in each view. In this approach, Every request essentially loads all of the required js,css files which i feel is making the mobile site to load slowly.   For my new web app, I'm debating on using multiple views, or conditionals within views. An example scenario would be showing different info to users who are authenticated vs non-authenticated. This could be handled a couple ways. In the controller, check IsAuthenticated and return a view based on that In the view, check IsAuthenticated and show blocks of info based on that Pros of multiple views: Smaller, less complicated view - next to no logic in the view Pros of single views: less view files to maintain The obvious cons are the opposites of the pros: more files to maintain or more complicated view files. Which do you prefer? Why? Any pros/cons I haven't outlined here? Update: Assume each view uses a layout page and partial views to abstract the obviously repetitive code.

• Algorithm to distribute objects in a box (like InDesign, Illustrator, Draw!)

  I have a set of rectangles with their corresponding positions and a big rectangle which serves as the 'bounding box' for these rectangles. I would like to know of an algorithm that would 'distribute the free space' evenly among the rectangles. Some of you may be familiar with the Distribute Spacing option in Adobe InDesign and similar layout-oriented apps. That would be what I'm looking for. I did try looking it up, but I'm not familiar with 'graphical' algorithms terminology and trying only terms relating to 'distribute' mainly yields results about Distributed Computing. So, even the names of the algorithms or better terms to look up would be a big help. Finally, the algorithm doesn't need to be rigorously the same as InDesign's one: pretty much any algorithm that 'distributes' objects inside a region will work fine. In fact, since I'm striving for visual appeal mainly, the more suggestions the better. =D

  My android application get restarted when I take the application from home screen, but this not a consistent. Some time it works perfectly (resume with the last visited activity). My application contains a splash screen activity and 5 activities in tab layout. Usage Start application After splash screen the application shows one of the activity in tab Press home button Try to invoke application from home screen Application gets restarted, it is not happening always. I am working on actual device.
