• Imitating Multiple Inheritance in PHP

  I am working on my own MVC framework and found myself stuck. I need the following construction: Controller -- Backend_Controller -- Backend_Crud_Controller -- Frontend_Controller -- Frontend_Crud_Controller Both 'Backend_Crud_Controller' and 'Frontend_Crud_Controller' have the same functionality and thus they should extend another class named 'Base_Crud_Controller', the only difference comes from the 'Backend/Frontend' Controllers which implement different mechanisms. Basically they should inherit both classes but my problem is that 'Backend/Frontend' controller doesn't necessarily extend 'Base_Crud_Controller'. I know multiple inheritance doesn't exist in PHP but I am looking for a solution, I choose to refrain Mixins (like in Symfony) as I don't consider that an elegant solution. Interfaces do not suit me as all of these end up as concrete classes that should implement methods.

• RegEx - character not before match

  I understand the consepts of RegEx, but this is more or less the first time I've actually been trying to write some myself. As a part of a project, I'm attempting to parse out strings which match to a certain domain (actually an array of domains, but let's keep it simple). At first I started out with this: url.match('www.example.com') But I noticed I was also getting input like this: http://www.someothersite.com/page?ref=http://www.example.com These rows will ofcourse match for www.example.com but I wish to exclude them. So I was thinking along these lines: Only match rows that contain www.example.com, but not after a ? character. This is what I came up with: var reg = new RegExp("[^\\?]*" + url + "(\\.*)", "gi"); This does however not seem to work, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I fear I've used what little knowledge I yet possess in the matter.

• Is there a way to launch an aggressive and complete garbage collection in Java?

  For memory optimization reasons, I'm launching myself the garbage collector during profiling, to check if objects are correctly cleaned after disposing of them. The call to garbage collector is not enough, though, and it seems that there is no guarantee of what it will clean. Is there a way to call it, to be sure it will recover as much as it can, in profiling conditions (this would have no point in production, of course)? Or is "calling it several times" the only way to be "almost sure"? Or did I simply misunderstand something about the Garbage Collector?

• How can find out the system default currency symbol on BlackBerry?

  I have a need to display a currency value in my application. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this with the RIM API, so I'm reduced to creating my own solution (a common refrain for BlackBerry development, unfortunately) Currently I'm using the Formatter class, from javax.microedition.locale like so protected String formatResult(double result) { try { Locale l = Locale.getDefaultForSystem(); Formatter formatter = new Formatter(l.toString()); return formatter.formatCurrency(result); } catch (UnsupportedLocaleException e) { return "This fails for the default locale because BlackBerry sucks"; } } I always hit the catch block in the simulator. Since this doesn't work by default on the simulator, I'm hesitant to put it in the application. So I have two questions: Can anyone tell me if the above solution is the way to go? And how to fix it, of course. Is there a way I can retrieve the currency symbol for the current locale programmatically so I can format myself?

• 2D Engine scrolling on OpenGL via hardware?

  hi, I'm using OpenGL as the bottom end for a 2D tiling engine. When everything is 2D, it is simple to optimize certain issues. For example, scrolling. If I know a certain section of the screen needs to scroll off the bottom, then I can just blit over that portion. I'm evening moving more than 1 pixel at a time. Without explicit hardware support (think old nintendo hw), this requires a lot of pixel writes. An on chip bitblt would be the next best thing. Essentially, I'm looking at how I can optimize my GL calls to use VRAM texture renders as efficient hardware blits. Is it possible to have GL scroll the framebuffer, or should I just resign myself to double-buffering and re-rendering an entire scene for each frame? Thx

  Hi, I have some time occupying myself with motion planning for robots, and have for some time wanted to explore the possibility of improving the opportunities as "potential field" method offers. My challenge is to avoid that the robot gets trapped in "local minimum" when using the "potential field" method. Instead of using a "random walk" approach to avoid that the robot gets trapped I have thought about whether it is possible to implement a variation of A* which could act as a sort of guide for precisely to avoid that the robot gets trapped in "local minimum". Is there some of the experiences of this kind, or can refer to literature, which avoids local minimum in a more effective way than the one used in the "random walk" approach.

  A rather strange question: I'm often asking myself with what programming languages things were created. I recently found this toy mini computer I played with when I was 13 or so at home. (Note: It is not one of those toy "notebooks", it's really small and came as an extra with a magazine) "Features": Hadware: LCD with a small field of pixels where the games were going on, besides that some stats such as score, highscore etc. Sounds and horrible music when started A really small "keyboard" with a wire Software: At least 14 or so games, from Snake over Tetris and Breakdown to some abomination of a car racing game A calculator Game selecting menu An alarm clock Inside there is a really small circuit board, I don't want to open the thing up now, though. Can you imagine if the games and "Operating System" of this thing where actually programmed using a language? If yes, what language could it be? If not with a programming language, how else was it created?

• Why is '\x' invalid in Python?

  I was experimenting with '\' characters, using '\a\b\c...' just to enumerate for myself which characters Python interprets as control characters, and to what. Here's what I found: \a - BELL \b - BACKSPACE \f - FORMFEED \n - LINEFEED \r - RETURN \t - TAB \v - VERTICAL TAB Most of the other characters I tried, '\g', '\s', etc. just evaluate to the 2-character string of a backslash and the given character. I understand this is intentional, and makes sense to me. But '\x' is a problem. When my script reaches this source line: val = "\x" I get: ValueError: invalid \x escape What is so special about '\x'? Why is it treated differently from the other non-escaped characters?

• Toggle Image Overlays in Google Maps API v3

  Hey guys. I've been building a small library for myself for a job I have at the moment building a map for a university. I've gotten pretty well everything I need in some basic form, but one thing has simply not been working, and is simply not giving me results. The university itself is sort of in a partnership with the neighboring college. It's been decided that both campuses should be included. I need to be able to toggle on/off the overlays of the campuses individually. i.e. Start with all campuses ON. User then turns OFF college campus, university overlay stays up. User can then turn it back on to display the college once more, or turn off the university as well, leaving no overlays. Here's a work in progress I'm doing at the moment: http://bgsweb.ca/maps/generator.html Basically, we need to take the one overlay, split it into multiple overlays, and enable the toggling of each individual overlay.   How to open files from explorer into different tabs. I can associate an open with menu with the file type, now when I already have the program working, how to open the new file into another tab, instead of new program. How to find the already running process exactly, not with the name and send the filename to it. Let me make myself clear: I want my app to be single instance, so that when user select 10 text files and press enter key, my application will open all the 10 text files into 10 tabs, instead of creating 10 processes. How to do that? How to communicate between various instances of the same process. EDIT SOLVED: Implemented the functionality using WM_COPYDATA in C# and the SingleApplication class from codeproject.

• How to detect when a long download is finished in a web server?

  I need a web server that allows me to remove a file after it has been successfully downloaded once. Is there any way to do this with apache? Is there another web server I can use for this task? I had already looked into Tornado for this purpose, but couldn't find a way to get an event to fire as soon as the download finished. the on_connection_close would only fire when I shut down the server. I'd prefer something PHP or Python-based if I have to code it myself.

  I'm not a beginner at C# but I really need to increase my understanding, so I've picked a classic deadlock problem to code to help teach myself some of the more advanced concepts of C#. The Dining Philosophers Problem seems like a good one, but I need a little help to get started. I know I need to approach the "diners" as objects, but to simulate the random delays between eating, should I look to threading with each diner in a separate thread? I want to have some control over the resulting seam vertex insertion, so looking to write myself rather than use a library.   I'm pondering a question on Brainbench. I actually realised that I could answer my question easily by compiling the code, but it's an interesting question nonetheless, so I'll ask the question anyway and answer it myself shortly. Take a look at this snippet: The question considers what happens when we throw from a destructor (which causes terminate() to be called). It's become clear to me by asking the question that the memory is indeed freed and the destructor is called, but, is this before or after throw is called from foo? Perhaps the issue here is that throw is used while the stack is unwinding that is the problem... Actually this is slightly confusing.

Additional requirements (that preclude hosting an IRC server myself): IM style appliction -- Download and install one app on each PC. The app lives in the tray. New messages appear in a notification window on everybody's pc. Secure -- No Ventrillo Harassment nonsense. Only those with access can see and read what's going on. Not My Job -- Doesn't require us to host a server, set up a server, etc. I just want to log on and go. No friggen smileys -- If the client app has smilies I will have to kill someone.

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.
