• Blogger widgets speed problem

  Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons. Almost every post in this blog contains YouTube iframes which aren't nowhere near fast. Are there any well-known solutions for this type of problems? Should I use some jQuery plugins for speed optimization, how can I make the facebook/twitter boxes load faster?

• Where does the URL parameter "?chocaid=397" come from?

  In Google Webmaster Tools, I noticed that my front page was indexed two times: example.com/ example.com/?chocaid=397 I know that I could fix this with the use of link type canonical, but I wonder: Where does this parameter come from? There are various sites that have pages indexed with this very parameter/value: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=chocaid%3D397. I looked for similarities between these sites. but couldn't find a conclusive one: It's often the front page, but not in every case. Some are NSFW, but not all. • How to troubleshoot Ubuntu One in Maverick beta?

  I just updated to the Maverick beta (actually it's a fresh install, and not an upgrade of 10.04). But now "Ubuntu One" doesn't show up in my me-menu thing. In addition, when I go to Ubuntu One from System-Preferences and attempt to log in from there it will sometimes look like it works, but other times it won't do anything. When I go to the command line and type u1sdtool -s it will either say something like "doing auth dance" or "auth failed" and often it has never even prompted me to log in or try to get a new password (even though I know it's correct). Anyway, this is the main hangup I have with the Maverick beta. I can't get to my ubuntu one account from the native client. Is this a widespread issue? Is there something I can do to fix this?

  Several times each year, I receive unsolicited introductions from tech recruiters, usually via LinkedIn and usually local firms. I am not currently looking for a new job. Is it advisable to establish a relationship with one or more recruiters when I'm not interested in finding new work, so that they have my resume on file? Here's another way I approach the question: My plumber was first hired at the point of need: I had a plumbing problem, looked up a few of them, and evaluated and hired based on their demeanor and cost estimates. I established a relationship with a general attorney, on the other hand, well in advance of ever actually needing services so that if or when services are needed he already knows enough about me to begin work. Should I approach recruiters like I approached my plumber or my lawyer? A separate discussion, I suppose, is whether or not the type of recruiters who troll LinkedIn for clients are generally helpful or not. Edit: I have never worked with a recruiter before, and therefore have little idea what to expect.

• Sharepoint Expiration Policy not working

  I have a Sharepoint 2010 list with a custom content type with an associated retention policy. The policy consists of a custom formula and then the Send to Recycle Bin action. However, I realized that the items were not being deleted. I verified the list settings and the retention policy was configured: I run the Expiration Policy job several times but no items were deleted and no errors found in the logs. • Are there any downsides of 2 developers getting married ?

  I remember that in my first year at college, the professor told us that his wife is also a software developer, and a few decades ago when there has been a tough period of 2-3 years in the software field they both had been unemployed and had experienced some hard times. Of course I am not asking about this economic downside, as it is a general conclusion for a family working in the same field, and is not related specifically to programming. I am asking about any other possible downsides of a family where both people are programmers. To all developers married to developers - I am not asking if it is "horrible" or something like that, of course it's not, just if there are any specific issues (all kinds of relationships has some specific issues, and at the same time are immune to others). And yes, I am asking about a male developer married to a female developer, I am clarifying to avoid jokes like "I believe that 2 developers can get married in some states" and so on :)

• How to downgrade from psql version 9.3.1 to 9.2.4

  I am building up a rails application that I cloned from my friend. I am using Ubuntu 13.10, rails 3.2.14. I am using a postgresql database and when I try to run rake db:migrate it gives me some error like this: PG::UndefinedObject: ERROR: type "json" does not exist LINE 1: ALTER TABLE "filters" ADD COLUMN "search_string" json I installed pg version :- 9.3.1 but my friend is working on 9.2.4 I don't know why this error is occurring, I tried several times to downgrade using purge or remove commands to remove 9.3.1 all goes well but when I check psql --version it again shows me 9.3.1 . Any solution ???

• Is the abundance of Frameworks dumbing down programmers?

  With all of the frameworks available these days ORM's DI/IoC etc. I find that many programmers are losing or don't have the problem solving skills needed to solve difficult issues. I've seen many times unexpected behaviour creep into applications and the developers unable to really dig in and find the issues. It seems to me that deep understanding of whats going on under the hood is being lost. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting these frameworks aren't good and haven't moved the industry forward, only asking if as a unintended consequence developers aren't gaining the knowledge and skill needed for deep understanding of systems.

• Unidata and RDB migrations to Oracle

  Have a couple of unique migrations that don't come along to often. They are Unidata and RDB migrations. The top three things that make these migration more challenging are: 1. No automated data migration tools - Because these migration don't happen that often, there are no tools in the market place to automated the data migration. 2. Application is tied to database - The application needs to be re-architected/re-engineered. Unidata Basic and COBOL for RDB. TSRI can migrate Basic to Java and PL/SQL. Transoft can migrate DEC COBOL to Java. 3. New client hardware potentially involved - Many Unidata and RDB based systems use 'green screens' as the front end. These are character based screens that will run on very old dumb terminals such as: Wyse and DEC 5250 terminals. The user interface can be replicated in a web browser but many times these old terminals do not support web browsers.

  Our hosting company is complaining that both our Drupal and Wordpress websites running in a shared server are consuming too many CPU resources. The traffic for each site is not more than 100 users per day and, at a first glance, we don't have very many plugins/add-ons. Is there any tool or resource to analyse what is causing that high CPU load? Thanks Update: We decided to suspend our accounts while the problem was being debugged but still our hosting (Site5) said that they saw unacceptable activity on our sites so we had to move to a dedicated server... asked them several times to provide us with more information and they always came back saying that we had to purchase a higher account. Finally decided to move to another hosting service.

• My website dns_server_failure when using University Connection

  My website used to open just fine in the past when I use my University connection, but now since I transfered my website to another hosting company this problem started to appear. Some times the website open and sometimes I get this alot!: Network Error (dns_server_failure) Your request could not be processed because an error occurred contacting the DNS server. The DNS server may be temporarily unavailable, or there could be a network problem. For assistance, contact your network support team. Do you have any idea? I checked using websites checking tools and my website was running just fine on any other connection , ADSL, 3g but except my University connection. Thanks in advance :) UPDATE: When I open my website using the Real IP Server it does open just fine. But with my domain nope. Also, even other websites that are hosted on my server cannot be opened too

• Need to convert a video file from mp4 to xvid

  I checked out the questions with similar titles and didn't find anything that I thought would help. I am attempting to convert a video into an avi, preferably xvid. The video file's Video and Audio Properties are as follows: Video Dimensions: 1280x544 Codec H.264/AVC Framerate: 24 frames per second Bitrate: 774 kpbs Audio Codec: MPEG-4 AAC audio Channels: Stereo Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate: 32 kpbs I have tried numerous times to convert this into an Xvid codec AVI but I have had no luck successfully getting the audio to sync properly. I am using Openshot to attempt conversion, using the libxvid codec and AVI format, but I am unsure of the proper audio settings I should use. What settings should I use to convert this video with Openshot? If it is not possible with Openshot, or if there is a better application to use, I would be grateful to know that as well.

• Just interviewed, turned down, now got an email asking to chat with recruiter. No response. What should I do? [closed]

  I was turned down after two interviews by a prominent company for an internship, and only a couple days later, I was asked when I had 10-15 minutes to chat today. Of course, I loved to, so I emailed within just 10 minutes of their email and let them know what times I was available at, and asked them when the best time should be, and if I should go somewhere or expect a phone call. No reply has come from them since yesterday afternoon, the recruiter wanted to talk to me today. I don't want to lose this opportunity, but I have no way to contact the recruiter other than by email, and the recruiter hasn't responded to my emails from yesterday, even though we were supposed to talk today. What's the best thing I can do (preferably within the next few hours!) to get the job? Is that even probably why she emailed me, or was a different reason likely? Any ideas?

  I have been into freelance business for more than 2 years. While doing projects for other people, I've build a compilation of common tasks that I implement in projects and put them into code. It's kind of a library with some functions that I can reuse without having to rewrite the same thing dozen times. I'm talking about accessing Access databases, downloading information from FTP and similar stuff. Is this acceptable from a legal point of view? What's the difference in reusing the old code and rewriting it from the scratch (using you own brain again, therefore the exact same logic)? I do not hold any copyright to it, of course, and provide the source code for these classes to my clients.

  My mysql installation was screwed up. I uninstalled and installed it multiple times. But I kept getting a hang or a error "cant connect". I now finally have it running with sudo -u mysql mysqld. How do I get mysqld to run at startup, and why do I need to run it as user mysql. Can I change it to run as root ? • First of all...

  First of all, this is going to be about my long (hopefully not) and painful (most definitely) climb back into the saddle after spending all of the intervening years between .NET 1.1 and now being a PHB.  I've half-heartedly attempted to get back up to speed a couple of times, but THIS time I actually have some coding to do, AND the geeks are so amped up about all of the new technologies, I really have to do this. So...  Once again, .NET 1.1.  Right now I'm getting ready to work on a site that incorporates Fluent nHibernate, MVC, Spark, and some conventions based coding practices.  Along the way, I'll have to learn about Lambda expressions and other cool stuff that I've missed out on in the last bazillion years since I seriously coded.  Hopefully this will be a guide, or a warning for those of you who feel the need to get off the sidelines and get back into the game. • Why are people using C instead of C++? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: When to use C over C++, and C++ over C? Many times I've stumbled upon people saying that C++ is not always better than C. Great example here would be the Linux kernel, where they simply decided to use C instead of C++ because it had better compilers at the time. But that's many years ago and a lot has changed. So the question is, why are people still using C over C++? I gues there are probably some cases (like embedded devices), where there simply isn't a good C++ compiler, or am I wrong here? What are the other cases when it is better to go with C instead of C++?

All in all my app took 10 times longer than I think that it should have, it is almost impossible to look the source code and tell what's going on with the classes, and may or may not have unused methods that I'll never be able to find...   I have been programming since some years and I won't say its a piece of cake but in this field, you know how to do things. You can always google up resources, tutorials. There are tons of already written code to help you with - frameworks, libraries but if you compare it to other innovation fields like "Electronics". Its not too easy to get started with, the community might not be too large on the internet, getting the things right plus lets not forget there is nothing to tell you where the error might be. I have wanted many times but not be able to get into, like, building some kind of robot because I don't know how to start. So my question is that, does programming tends to be easy compared rest of the fields or is it just my intrest that makes it easy?

• Dual Monitor/Xinerama not working; cannot even detect on-board graphic card

  I have Kubuntu 12.04 and two identical VGA monitors. One I plugged via DVI-VGA adapter into the DVI port of my discrete AMD Radeon HD 6670, the other into the VGA port of my on-board graphic card (Radeon HD 6410D). After installing Kubuntu I got a black screen, so I booted with nomodeset and installed AMD's catalyst drivers but only the monitor plugged into the discrete graphic card worked. Using lspci I saw that the on-board graphics was not listed. Then I found in the BIOS settings the options "Surround View" and "Onboard Dual Link DVI" both disabled. After enabling both, the on-board graphics card shows up in lspci but in amdcccle, it only shows as [Uknown display]Uknown adapter. When I try to enable xinerama, I get a black screen after rebooting on both monitors. I tried several options and hints from the web but nothing worked so far. I also reinstalled the AMD drivers several times. What should I do?

• Long delays in Unity3D substance generation

  Currently working on an iOS/Android project in Unity3d, and we're seeing some incredibly long times for generating substances between testing runs. We can run the game, but once we shut down the playback, Unity begins to re-import all off the substances built using Substance Designer. As we've got a lot of these in our game, it's starting to lead to 5 minute delays between testing runs just to test a small change. Any suggestions or parameters we should check that could possibly prevent Unity from needing to regenerate these substances every time? Shouldn't it be caching these things somewhere?

• Execute code at specific intervals, only once?

  I am having an issue with XNA, where I want to execute some code in my Update method, but only at a given interval, and only once. I would like to avoid booleans to check if I've already called it once, if possible. My code is here: if ((gameTime.TotalGameTime.TotalMilliseconds % 500) == 0) { Caret.Visible = !Caret.Visible; } As you may have guessed, it's for a TextBox control, to animate the caret between invisible and visible states. I just have reason to believe that it is called twice or maybe even 3 times in a single update-call, which is bad, and makes it look unstable and jumpy.
