  Question: Can I deploy BES and BES Express with Exchange 2010? Any tips for doing this if possible? Background: We have a lot of users with personal BlackBerry's and we would like to allow them to start using their devices for receviing corporate email. We don't need full BES features for these users, just the ability to enforce passwords and remotely wipe. Plus users have never wanted to upgrade their data plans to the more expensive BES plans. So BES Express is a great fit. We already have an existing BES, for corporate owned BB's. We want to keep this as is allows us to enforce several policies, not available on BES Express.

• Securing a Windows Server 2008 R2 Public Web Server

  I'm setting up a public web server: Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7.5. Does anyone have a tutorial / walkthrough / tips on properly securing a public web server? I've seen a few tutorials but mostly focused on Windows Server 2003. What I've done so far: Created a specific user account for the website / app pool, Renamed Admin account, Installed FTPS, Configured firewall to block any non-public service (web / https), Configured firewall to allow access to management interfaces only from specific IP addresses (rdp, IIS management, ftp) Maybe a few other things but can't remember at the moment... ICMP is allowed... Should I disable all except ping? Port scan reveals only web and https ports. Any other suggestions? Thanks

• Keyboard for programmers

  I'm trying to improve my working environment and I'm still searching for that perfect keyboard that practically types bug-free code all by itself. At the moment I'm using a Logitech Wave for my Windows need and an Apple Wireless Keyboard (the one without a numeric keypad) when doing OS X stuff. I'm quite happy with the Logitech Wave but I would prefer one without all the extra multimedia buttons. What I like most about the Apple Wireless Keyboard is that it is very similar to the Macbook's keyboard which for me makes it easier to write code when on my Macbook. What kind of keyboard would you recommend for going all out writing code until your fingers bleed? I have remapped the Caps Lock key to Ctrl which after a while feels really good, until I have to sit at another computer or when someone at work is going to show me something on my computer. Are there other little keyboard tricks that you use to get a little bit more productive? I have looked into switching to Dvorak but I have decided it's not for me.

• Bad I/O scheduler?

  os: up-to-date Fedora 14. Working as a "normal desktop". It's doing very well, but if i start VirtualBox, and e.g.: install a guest on it, it just "freezez". I mean if there are disk activities on a VirtualBox guest, then the computer becomes unrespondable..even the mouse is laggin for about 50 minutes.. What could be the bottleneck? What could be the problem? If anyone has any tips/howtos to speed it up, please help! It has a normal 2,5" HDD, with 5400 RPM. Does it worth for me if i buy a 2,5" HDD with 7200 RPM? T7200 cpu, 4 GByte RAM, "vm.swappiness = 0". Thank you!

• Why not allow mutation of the this binding?

  Hi Everyone, I'm building a interpreter/compiler for a school project (well now its turning into a hobby project) and an instructor warned me not to allow mutation of the 'this' binding (he said it was gross and made a huge deal about it) but I never learned why this is so... dangerous or bad. I'm very curious about why this is so bad. I figured this sort of feature could be useful in some way or another. I'm wondering if anyone familiar with building languages can tell me what sort of problems mutation on the 'this' binding can cause, and if they know of any cool or useful tricks that one could do if it actually was allowed. • "Couldn't resolve host" for any external content

  On our site we run a few different scripts for various sites (uploading to amazon s3, data from chartbeat, script to count twitter followers) and all of them just stop working from time to time. They work most days, but then some days (like today) they all just stop working. This simple script to get follower count into PHP $url = "http://twitter.com/users/show/username"; $response = file_get_contents ( $url ); $t_profile = new SimpleXMLElement ( $response ); $count = $t_profile->followers_count; Just sits there for a couple minutes, then finally spits out an error that says "Couldn't resolve host". Any script we use for an external site gives us this error. I'm not really sure where to check what's blocking these connections all of a sudden, and why it seems to work most times, then doesn't for a day or so, then works again. Any tips? • Change my MX record on my server to google MX?

  Hi. I got a windows server 2008 where I host a site, now I decided to have the email on google apps. I did add the MX records I get from them to my DNS settings on the server but with no luck. I recently started doing server stuff so I did like this. Server Manager / Roles / DNS Server / DNS / SERVERNAME / MYDOMAIN / Forward Lookup / New MX Host or child domain: What goes here? FQDN: here is my domain name, i think because I named the ns my domain? FQDN MX: here is the google MX record I got from them MSP: 10 I have no Idea where I go wrong but I thought I would ask you guys if any of you can maybe give me some tips on what to look for or any newbee mistake I do that you see from this little info. • What are some methods to debug Javascript inside of a UIWebView?

  I'm trying to figure out why something with Javascript isn't working inside of a UIWebView. To my knowledge, there is no way to set a breakpoint inside of XCode for a js file. No problemo, I'll just go back to 2004 and use alert statemen-- oh wait they don't seem to work inside of a UIWebView either! The only thing I could think of is by exporting my HTML And JS files to my desktop and then just doing my debugging inside of Safari. And that works! But of course, the bug I'm fighting with in the UIWebView doesn't occur in Safari. Are there any other ways for debugging inside of a UIWebView, or any tricks that I can use akin to using the old-school alert method?

• Recommended apps for securing/protecting a new desktop machine install?

  I'm hoping to harness the collective tips of superuser to gather recommended apps/configurations to keep a new desktop clean, virus free, and hopefully lower software rot. I ask because I've recently come across tools like dropbox, deepfreeze, returnil, etc, and I'm curious what other ones are out there to protect a new box. • installer hanging during .net 4.5 framework install

  I am having trouble installing Visual studio 2012 Premium Edition. I kick off the installer for it but it hangs when installing .net 4.5 framework. I have left it for hours but there is no progression in the progress bar. I have downloaded the .net 4.5 framework separately and tried to install that from msi but that also hangs similarly. The only way to kill it is by killing the process. Any ideas how I could resolve this issue, or what I need to do to trouble shoot it further? Any tips?

• Migrating Roaming Profiles from one drive to another

  As the title suggests, how can I migrate roaming profiles located in one drive (starting to fill up already) to another? Current share is like this "SVR1\Shares\UserProfiles\%username%\ But of course, this is located in C:/Shares/UserProfiles/%username%/ What do I need to do? Do I simply copy/paste into the bigger(RAID1) drive and then repoint all the profile paths (using AD Users&Computers profile properties)? What if I can point this to a different file server all together? Best practices? tips? anything you guys can suggest. Thanks!

• Win7 to Win7 Remote Desktop Not working, Xp to 7 working fine

  Hello, I have a small home network and recently i tried to enable remote desktop for one of the pc's. I have a mix of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Xp runing alongside ubuntu, centos and others (some virtual, some real). I have a few Windows 7 pc`s that can be connected to using remote desktop from inside and outside the network (port redirects on routers, etc, etc) and some Xp ones. The trouble is when i tried to do the same thing to a Win7 laptop i discovered i can't connect to it from another win7 pc inside the home network. To sum it up Working: xp -- win7 not working: win7 -- win7 What i tried - disable and enable remote desktop (my computer - remote settings) - removing and adding users to the remote settings window - adding a new user to the machine, administrator or 'normal' user - checking the firewall settings on the machine and set 'allow' to remote desktop for both 'home/work' and 'public'networks Any tips on what should i do next? It displays ' .. secure connection' and after that the window with 'Your security credentials did not work' and it lets me try again with another user/password..

• Computer disappeared from Workgroup

  I've a LAN that has 8 computers running Windows XP and only one (Computer A) running Windows Server 2003. When computer A boots, it shows up in all computers' Workgroups, but after 15-30 minutes, it disappears from the Workgroup in all computers, including itself. However, files can still be transferred from and to A via full path shortcuts and network drive maps still work. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or not, but if that particular computer is turned on while the LAN cable is plugged in, it doesn't connect to the network, but it connects if the cable is plugged in after the computer is run. Any tips why this is happening? Thanks.

  Has anyone been able to install Windows 7 x64 under Bootcamp on a Mac? I was able to get the 32-bit version to install, but I cannot get x64 to install. The Mac doesn't seem to even want to boot the DVD. And even if I get it installed are there drivers that will work with it? I'd prefer to have Windows 7 x64 because I'd like to use the entire 6GB RAM in my MacBook Pro. I'd appreciate any tips or advice.

• How to back up server with rsync, preserving ownership/permissions without root login

  I am setting up a backup server on which I want to run rsync over ssh to backup content on other servers every night. I would like to set up ssh keys to make it password-less, but I want to preserve ownership of files and permissions. There are a number of users on the server to be backed up which won't all exist on the backup server. What would be the best way to do this? • Engineers are using explosives to remove hard rock outside our office building. What countermeasures should we take?

  Our building is located approx. 100 meters from the explosive charges. They happen several times per day, and really shake the entire building a lot. This is going to go on for many days and the blasts are supposed to get stronger. Our server rooms are nothing fancy; one of them has all the racks on hard concrete while the other one has a raised floor (the one which allows the cables to go beneath it). Does anyone have any tips, countermeasures or best practices for us? • Two identical fiber optic broadband lines working as one

  I have been trying to find an answer to this, but all I can find is hobbyists trying to connect their Linksys devices to get some magic out of them. I am looking for a way I could combine two 100Mbit fiber optic lines into a single connection for our office. I assume it involves some Cisco learning or something similar. Do I need to configure some big router to load-balance the NATing in some way? I assume that many of you have done something similar and hope someone could share their knowledge or at least provide me some tips on how to do this.

• Plugin 'InnoDB' registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed. On win 7

  I have had to reinstall MySQL, however the service is failing to start with the above cause listed in evnt viewer. One solution is apparently to delete a couple of files prefixed with 'ib_logfile' which represent any old databases. However I do not have these files, and my service is still failing to start ... ? When I say I don't have these files I did a search using the windows search with zero results, and they are definitely not present in my mysql install directory. And I don't have the "documents and setting/appilcation data' folder referenced in link. In fact I only have only one mysql install directory, I know where that is - what do I need to delete/change ? The instance is configured OK, I ran that as administrator and it is listed in services, but the service itself fails to start Any tips, other than going over to postgresql ?

• Excel formula: can MATCH recognise 'n'&"01", or 'n'&"02 "

  I have an Excel sheet (source) that has simple ID numbers in column A (01 to 40000). In another sheet (child) I have these same ID numbers in column A but with either an additional 01 or 02 added on; e.g. 0101 or 0102, 250001 or 250002, etc. Therefore this list of ID numbers is nearly twice as long. In column B there are figures. I'm trying to extract the data from column B in the child sheet, and based on whether it has a "01" or a "02" place the figure into either column B or C of the source sheet. My idea is to use INDEX/MATCH, but I'm not sure how the match would be written to take into account the NOT EXACT MATCH of the lookup value. MATCH(A1&"01",child!A1:A100000,). Any tips and links greatly appreciated. Mike.

• Remote site AD design (2003)

  A remote site has about 25 of our 50-ish employees. They have their own AD domain presently (2003) but I want to look at getting them onto the same global domain for ease of access/administration. The remote site has a VPN link but line speeds are very poor. I am already aware of tools like ADMT and have done a few migrations in the past (NT/2003 domains), but this is the first time I have the luxury of designing how this domain is organised. So I'm looking for tips on good AD design; would a remote site be better served as a sub-domain? would this reduce traffic? I am only currently looking at 2003 since only existing machine will be used.

• Why can't I play YouTube clips properly anymore?

  I haven't got the faintest idea what happened, but since about 3-4 days now I can't play any clips on YouTube properly at all. Proper as in continuously without loading, pause, playback, pause, loading, playback, pause, loading, playback, etc. I haven't changed anything hardware nor software-wise. On the other hand I can play Break.com, Viddler, Liveleak, Metacafe without any trouble. I tried my own tips, but that hasn't helped me at all. What on earth happend? Is it me, or is it YouTube? I'm using Firefox 3.6 Beta 5. But the issue is the same on Chrome as well as on Internet Explorer.

• Sync Windows Live Mail between two computers

  Hi, I have a laptop where I have been using Windows Live Mail as my email application for the last year. Yesterday I got a dell desktop as well and I am desperatly trying to set up so my desktop and laptop sync the email between each other. Im using Super Flexible Synchronizer to sync the email storage folder to a NAS on my network, so when setting up the desktop naturally I set it up to download all from the NAS. But each time I open Windows Live Mail on the new machine, some emails suddenly come in duplicates, one is read, the other is not. I have ran through the registry on the new machine and updated an ID i found, in 3 places, one being: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts{blah blah blah}\DBStore\contacts.edb Still doesnt seem to be enough. Does anyone have any tips or ideas how to sync Windows Live Mail between two computers without duplicates and weird behaviour etc. grateful for your help, jesper

• Is MozyHome Remote Backup known to slow down Windows Explorer?

  Windows Explorer on my home machine is uber slow, and I suspect it is Mozy's fault. In the past Mozy has done some goofy stuff like placing file and folder icon overlays in Windows Explorer, which was really bugging me because I thought they were from TortoiseSVN (and I had uninstalled that!). Anyhow, does anyone else have Mozy installed? Is Windows Explorer really slow respond for you, say when you simply double click the hard drive to browse files? I'd also welcome any tips people might have on debugging why Windows Explorer might be slow (shell extensions known to cause problems, etc.).

• Setting Sql server security rights for multiple situations

  We have an application which uses an instance of Sql Server locally for its backend storage. The administrator windows login has had its sysadmin right revoked, and instead two sql logins have been created; one for the application with a secret password and one read only login we let users view the raw data with. This was working fine until we moved on FileStreams, which requires intergrated windows authentication. So now the sql server logins must be replaced. As a result, I am now reviewing all of our logins but I am not sure how it is possible. It seems that the application needs full read/write access, yet I still need to lock down writing to the tables so the user cannot login into the database and delete data randomly. Does anyone have any tips for setting multiple levels of security using intergrated windows logins, or can you direct me to any further reading? Thanks.
