• Client / Server security from mobile to website

  Hey. Am new to the world of web programming and learning a bunch of fairly simple new pieces of tech, trying to piece them all together. So, we have a simple client (currently iPhone, to move to J2ME soon) that's pulling down lists of data via PHP, which is talking to a MySQL db. I have a rudimentary user/login system so that data is only served to someone who matches a known user etc, either on the website or on the client. All the php scripts on the website that query the DB check to make sure an active session is in place, otherwise dumping the user back to the login screen. I've read a little about SSL and want to know if that is sufficient to protect the website AND the data passing between the server and the client?

• Force Python to be 32 bit on OS X Lion

  I'm trying to use CPLEX within Python on Mac OS 10.7.5. CPLEX appears to only support a 32 bit python. I'm using this in a python shell to check if it's 32 bit: import sys,platform; print platform.architecture()[0], sys.maxsize > 2**32 I've tried these 2 commands as suggested in man 1 python, but neither seem to force 32 bit: export VERSIONER_PYTHON_PREFER_32_BIT=yes defaults write com.apple.versioner.python Prefer-32-Bit -bool yes The only thing that seems to work is this: arch -i386 python However, if I run a script using arch which calls other scripts, they all seem to start up in 64 bit mode. Is there another system wide variable to force it into 32 bit mode?

• execute javascript before return in php

  I do have a custom php script that validates captcha code and sends an email. If php script is sending a mail successfully then it returns "true". This is done by: if(!$Error){ echo "true"; exit; } Before returning true, I would like to execute a jQuery command that should refresh the captcha image. I shouldn't be doing this is client side as it might be risky from spammers point of view. To refresh the captcha image, The command is: jQuery('#captcha').attr('src', ('php/captcha/captchaimage_show.php?' + Math.random())); I need to call this command from within php scripts before return any results by "echo" Prashant

• Extract anything that looks like links from large amount of data in python

  Hi, I have around 5 GB of html data which I want to process to find links to a set of websites and perform some additional filtering. Right now I use simple regexp for each site and iterate over them, searching for matches. In my case links can be outside of "a" tags and be not well formed in many ways(like "\n" in the middle of link) so I try to grab as much "links" as I can and check them later in other scripts(so no BeatifulSoup\lxml\etc). The problem is that my script is pretty slow, so I am thinking about any ways to speed it up. I am writing a set of test to check different approaches, but hope to get some advices :) Right now I am thinking about getting all links without filtering first(maybe using C module or standalone app, which doesn't use regexp but simple search to get start and end of every link) and then using regexp to match ones I need.

• Getting Postfix to process the mail queue on Mac OS X

  I'm in the process of getting Sendmail/Postfix setup so that I can send and test my PHP scripts when using the mail() function. I've got to the point that when I run the mail() function in PHP, the script executes without any errors and the mail is sent to my mailq but it then does not get processed and simply times-out with a message of: Operation timed out. • sudo changes PATH - why?

  This is the PATH variable without sudo: $ echo 'echo $PATH' | sh /opt/local/ruby/bin:/usr/bin:/bin This is the PATH variable with sudo: $echo 'echo $PATH' | sudo sh /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin As far as I can tell, sudo is supposed to leave PATH untouched. What's going on? How do I change this? (This is on Ubuntu 8.04). UPDATE: as far as I can see, none of the scripts started as root change PATH in any way. From man sudo: To prevent command spoofing, sudo checks ``.'' and ``'' (both denoting current directory) last when searching for a command in the user's PATH (if one or both are in the PATH). Note, however, that the actual PATH environment variable is not modified and is passed unchanged to the program that sudo executes.

  Hello, I need to find a very compact, cross-platform web server that can run Lua scripts, ie. either a regular web server like Mongoose that will forward queries to a Lua program in eg. FastCGI, or a web server itself written in Lua which will save the need to provide a separate web server. I recently started learning about Lua so am still in the dark about what is available out there, save for the three I came accross: Barracuda Embedded Web Server http://barracudaserver.com/ba/doc/ Xavante - Lua HTTP 1.1 Web server http://keplerproject.github.com/xavante/ Haserl http://haserl.sourceforge.net/ If someone's already done this recently, what solution would you recommend along with any tutorial/article that would get me started? • Apache server-side files caching via .htaccess?

  Hi, I'm starting new website and gonna include several JS libs and would like to know how .htaccess file template should look like with caching of media and JS files on? Whats better for compression, GZip or Deflate? Is it better/faster solution to serve those JS libs of the Google CDN perhaps then locally? I'm asking CDN question since some of scripts served off GoogleCDN are potentially going to update and eventually break the website layout so i thought it would be better for me to host them locally and cache via webserver if its going to work with same/near-same speed.

• What is the Perl equivalent to C's #include? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I include functions from another file in my Perl script? I have a couple simple perl scripts that share some subroutines. I'd like to pull those subroutines out into another file, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. All I need is an equivalent to C's #include. I found a couple things online about creating modules, but that seems like overkill for what I'm doing. Is there a way to just tell perl to load/execute another perl script inline, so it's treated as if it's just part of the file (like #include in C)?

  In my cshtml file I have a form named 'ApplyMedicalMain' and I want to show a dynamically loaded division when the form is dirty but its not happening even though the form is dirty ...   So using Google Apps Scripts with a Form, I'm able to get all the items and iterate through them using the following: var form = FormApp.getActiveForm(); var items = form.getItems(); var item; for(var i = 0; i < items.length; i++) { item = items[i]; if(item.getType() == FormApp.ItemType.DATE) { item = item.asDateItem(); item.dropdown.month; // I need a method like this } Logger.log("ItemTitle: %s ItemType: %s",items[i].getTitle(), items[i].getType()) ; } I can even get the DateItem that I want. My issue is that I cannot get the dropdown boxes from the DateItem. Does anyone know how to get the dropdown boxes from the DateItem? (Like: item.dropdown.month or item.dropdown.day, etc).

  I have written two small scripts, First one maintains a dictionary of current stock prices for a set of securities. I am using recursion to listen to a named pipe. Whenever there is something available on the name pipe, it updates the security price and goes right back and start listening to the pipe. The second one periodically reads the stock price of some security from the price cache of the first program and performs come calculation. But I have no idea how to make these two programs communicate. I somehow need to make my second programs start the first program and let it run in the background and get the price whenever it needs it. Can someone point me in the right direction? • Does anyone actually use the phrase DHTML anymore?

  I'm not sure if this is exactly appropriate but I have what I think is a interesting question. Does anyone actually use the phrase DHTML anymore in a professional environment? I came across the the word the other day for the first time in years and shuddered at the thought of it. To me the acronym Dynamic HTML just sounds so 1999, it brings me back to the days when I first discovered programming and web development and thought it was awesome to have scripts which modified the status bar and made things fly around the page. I for one have never used the phrase recently and would never dream of saying it in a professional environment to clients or colleges as I feel there is an amateur and dated stigma attached to it. What are your thoughts?

  Hi, I need to create a handover document for a fairly large system consisting of all the stuff you'd expect from a telecom deployment: many servers, database clusters which copy some data between them in specific ways, tons of log files, both off-the-shelf and locally developed software, scripts, network configurations, local know-how, etc. It's really got as many sysadmin-typical elements, as development ones. The target of this document are in the first place sysadmins who take over the day-to-day operation tasks and some problem resolving, and in the second place people who want to learn about the system in general. Is there some place I can learn about how to write something like that? It could just as easily be a 10 page "what's where", as a 500 pages book about "all things telephony". Maybe it should be more than one document really. Please link some useful resources / books I could use for this task. PS: this is intended to be internal only, customer interactions etc. are out of scope here

• SQL Compare-Like tool for Oracle?

  We're a .NET team which uses the Oracle DB for a lot of reasons that I won't get into. But deployment has been a bitch. We are manually keeping track of all the changes to the schema in each version, by keeping a record of all the scripts that we run during development. Now, if a developer forgets to check-in his script to the source control after he ran it - which is not that rare - at the end of the iteration we get a great big headache. I hear that SQL Compare by Red-Gate might solve these kind of issues, but it only has SQL Server support. Anybody knows of a similar tool for Oracle? I've been unable to find one.

  I have a general question about the design of JavaScript Libraries. I am trying to consolidate common methods into one js file so they can be reused by different scripts. I have taken a look at how the JSON library is structured and believe it was a good approach. JSON for Javascript. So they start off creating an instance of the class: if (!this.JSON) { this.JSON = {}; } Then they do this: (function () { if (typeof JSON.stringify !== 'function') { JSON.stringify = function (value, replacer, space) { This is works perfect if you just want to do JSON.[function_name], but what if I want to have a more structured library such that I want: JSON.[subgroup].[function]. How would I structure my JS library in such a way? Any links to resources are greatly appreciated, thanks.

  Hi, I have a file where I keep all scripts so my pages wouldn't get messy (I have php file which generates required javascript). My includes basically look like this: </html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="script.php"></script> </head> <body> <input type="button" onClick="return blah();" /> </body> </html> In script.php there's jquery wrapper $(document).ready where I keep all jquery related stuff. The funny thing is, when I put function blah() inside this wrapper I get "blah is not defined" error, but when I put it outside - works perfectly. So, what could be the problem?

• Using T-Sql, how can I insert from one table on a remote server into another table on my local server?

  Given the remote server 'Production' (currently accessible via an IP) and the local database 'Development', how can I run an INSERT into 'Development' from 'Production' using T-SQL? I'm using MS SQL 2005 and the table structures are a lot different between the two databases hence the need for me to manually write some migration scripts. UPDATE: T-SQL really isn't my bag. • How do you manage your sqlserver database projects for new builds and migrations?

  How do you manage your sql server database build/deploy/migrate for visual studio projects? We have a product that includes a reasonable database part (~100 tables, ~500 procs/functions/views), so we need to be able to deploy new databases of the current version as well as upgrade older databases up to the current version. Currently we maintain separate scripts for creation of new databases and migration between versions. Clearly not ideal, but how is anyone else dealing with this? This is complicated for us by having many customers who each have their own db instance, rather than say just having dev/test/live instances on our own web servers, but the processes around managing dev/test/live for others must be similar.

• Zend Framework Autoloader question.

  In zend framework I register my namespace like this (in application.php): 'autoloaderNamespaces' => array( 'Cms_' ) And after this - I'd expect that Zend would always check that path in addition to Zend and ZendX paths if unknown class is called. But for some reason this doesn't work with for example view helpers. I still have to register a separate path for my view helpers even though view helper scripts are named according to Zend coding standards and are located in: Cms/View/Helper/ And this is how I register helper path in config file: view' => array( 'charset' => 'UTF-8', 'doctype' => 'XHTML1_TRANSITIONAL', 'helperPath' => array( 'Cms_View_Helper_' => 'Cms/View/Helper' ) ), So - I'm not sure why I have to register "Cms" namespace twice first through 'autoloaderNamespaces' and then through View "helperPath"? Shouldn't Cms namespace include Cms/View/Helper namespace? can someone plz clarify this:)

• Calling software modules (Java, Perl, etc.) from R

  I've recently started using R for Natural Language Processing tasks and find that a lot of applications are available in Java and Perl (for my purposes). For example: A few perl modules are available to find distance measures between words by querying Wordnet. I am aware of the R Wordnet package, but it does not perform the tasks that these CPAN modules do. Many Java packages for NLP are out there, which I'd like to use from within R. I know of rJava, RSPerl, the simple system command amongst others, but I'd like more examples of how I could make calls to Java and Perl applications from R. Recently I tried capturing console output from a perl script. cat( 'print "Hello World\n";',file="hello.pl" ) system(command="c:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl") system(command=paste(Sys.getenv("COMSPEC"),"/c","C:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl")) None of the above system commands showed 'Hello World' on the R console. I've used "system" before to run perl scripts to perform tasks without wanting to capture console output. Any hints and redirection to other more extensive sources of information would be highly appreciated. Thank you

• "set -e" in shell and command substitution

  In shell scripts set -e is often used to make them more robust by stopping the script when some of the commands executed from the script exits with non-zero exit code. It's usually easy to specify that you don't care about some of the commands succeeding by adding || true at the end. The problem appears when you actually care about the return value, but don't want the script to stop on non-zero return code, for example: output=$(possibly-failing-command) if [ 0 == $? -a -n "$output" ]; then ... else ... fi Here we want to both check the exit code (thus we can't use || true inside of command substitution expression) and get the output. However, if the command in command substitution fails, the whole script stops due to set -e. Is there a clean way to prevent the script from stopping here without unsetting -e and setting it back afterwards?

Are there any scripts or IDE wizards which can assist a programmer to create php forms quickly and also give the programmer flexibility to customize the form easily? I found some webservices which provide such services but they are mostly oriented towards non-programmers and the forms they generate are not easily customizable and do not support all kinds of functionalities. • Embedding Python in C: Having problems importin local modules

  I'm needing to run Python scripts within a C-based app. I am able to import standard modules from the Python libraries i.e.: PyRun_SimpleString("import sys") But when I try to import a local module 'can' PyRun_SimpleString("import can") returns the error msg: Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in ImportError: No module named can When I type the command "import can" in iPython, the system is able to find it. How can I link my app with can? I've tried setting PYTHONPATH to my working directory. Thanks.
