• Sharing session state between 2 ASP.NET applications using SQL Server

  Hi I'm working on a site that has a requirement to share session between a cms application and an online store application on the same domain eg. mydomain.com and store.mydomain.com I've made some progress with it and it works on my local build between localhost/cms and localhost/store Basically I have done what is suggested in this article http://blogs.msdn.com/toddca/archive/2007/01/25/sharing-asp-net-session-state-across-applications.aspx and hacked the TempGetAppID Stored Procedure to return the same application id (1). This appears to work as it creates sessions with ids like 'abv5d2urx1asscfwuzw3wp4500000001', which is what I'd expect. My issue is that when I deploy it to our testing environment, it creates a new session when I navigate between the 2 sites. So when I start a session on the cms site, if I navigate to the store, it creates a new session. These are set up as 2 different websites in IIS7. In the web.config files for both sites, the and elements are both the same and are as follows (minus sensitive information) Has anyone got an ideas why this might not be working? I am sharing Forms Authentication across the 2 sites and that works fine. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks Dave

• Front End Developer v/s PHP-MySQL Engineer

  Hello, I want to decide which of this would be a more viable career option? I am ready to quit my current job and hence I am looking for new opportunity. Current job is maintainence and no more active development. My current role is of a PHP/MySQL Developer. I very well understand web-programming and am comfortable with RoR/Sinatra/Zend MVC/JQuery/JSON manipulation, etc. I understand MySQL InnoDB/MyISAM engine and how one differs from the other, etc. Basically, I could very well manage the deployment of a web-application end-to-end including configuration of Apache/Nginx servers, memcache,etc On the other hand, I am being offered a Sr.Front End Web developer that would require me to extensively write HTML/CSS crossbrowser/crossplatform compliant code. I very well understand XHTML/CSS/Box model etc. I would be working on Drupal for the management of websites. While I understand continuing to work on server-side technologies would always be a good career path, how would the role of Core front-end developer turn out to be? If I take this opportunity, will I eventually get a chance to focus onto UCD, HCI, Information Architect,etc. So are these kinda roles possible if I focus on front end development? No offenses to the Front end developers, just want to understand if this is something I want to gain a mastery over. I have 2 yrs of industry experience after graduating with a MS-Computer Science. Although, I have a CS degree, if I were to take uip serious front-end role; I could probably go back and take up some design/HCI/UI courses. Please advise.

• [Architecture] Roles for white-label service access.

  Okay, I know I'm doing something wrong - but can't figure out a better way. I am developing a website which is going to allow users to setup their own mini-websites. Something like Ning. Also, I have only 1 basic login and access to each mini website is provided (right now) via roles. So the way I am doing this right now is: Everytime a new mini website is created - say blah, I create 2 roles in my application. blah_users and blah_admin The user creating the mini website is given the role - blah_admin and every other user wanting to join this mini website (or network) is given the role - blah_user. Anyone can view data from any website. However to add data, one must be a member of that mini site (must have the blah_user role assigned) The problem that I am facing is that by doing a role based system, I'm having to do loads of stuff manually. Asp.Net 2 controls which work on the User.IsAunthenticated property are basically useless to me now because along with the IsAuthenticated property, I must also check if the user has the proper role. I'm guessing there is a better way to architect the system but I am not sure how. Any ideas? This website is being developed in ASP.Net 2 on IIS 6. Thanks a tonne!

• htaccess mod_rewrite check file/directory existence, else rewrite?

  I have a very heavy htaccess mod_rewrite file that runs my application. As we sometimes take over legacy websites, I sometimes need to support old urls to old files, where my application processes everything post htaccess. My ultimate goal is to have a 'Demilitarized Zone' for old file structures, and use mod rewrite to check for existence there before pushing to the application. This is pretty easy to do with files, by using: RewriteCond %{IS_SUBREQ} true RewriteRule .* - [L] RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} 200 RewriteRule .* - [L] RewriteCond Public/DMZ/$1 -F [OR] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ Public/DMZ/$1 [QSA,L] This allows pseudo support for relative urls by not hardcoding my base path (I cant assume I will ever be deployed in document root) anywhere and using subrequests to check for file existence. Works fine if you know the file name, ie http://domain.com/path/to/app/legacyfolder/index.html However, my legacy urls are typically http://domain.com/path/to/app/legacyfolder/ Mod_Rewrite will allow me to check for this by using -d, but it needs the complete path to the directory, ie RewriteCond Public/DMZ/$1 -F [OR] RewriteCond /var/www/path/to/app/Public/DMZ/$1 -d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ Public/DMZ/$1 [QSA,L] I want to avoid the hardcoded base path. I can see one possible solutions here, somehow determining my path and attaching it to a variable [E=name:var] and using it in the condition. Another option is using -U, but the tricky part is stopping it from hijacking every other request when they should flow through, since -U is really easy to satisfy. Any implementation that allows me to existence check a directory is more than welcome. I am not interested in using RewriteBase, as that requires my htaccess to have a hardcoded base path.

• Server reporting incorrect mime type for css files

  We have a VPS server that we host our websites on. I have written a CMS using CodeIgniter. On one of the interfaces, I am attempting to upload a css file to the system. This worked correctly when we had it hosted on shared hosting. Since we've moved it to the VPS, I am getting an "incorrect filetype" error. It all comes down to the fact that the server is reporting a mime type of text/x-c for the css file rather than text/css. I logged in via shell and ran the following command on an existing valid css file (to make sure it wasn't an issue with either CodeIgniter or with php). file --brief --mime 'filename.css' 2>&1 The server gave me the following in response to my command: text/x-c; charset=us-ascii My question ... is there some sort of server setting that I need to tweak to get the server to correctly identify the css file as text/css? Do I just have to add a mime type for the css files to the server? I found the mime types file (etc/mime.types), and it just hase video types and a couple other that I have no idea what they are. There is nothing in there for css or images or html files. Unless I'm looking in the wrong spot. I'm not a server person, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. Some server specs: Apache/2.2.22 (Unix) php 5.3.13 Server API = CGI/FastCGI the fileinfo php extension appears to be disabled

  Hi I'm new in Javascript OO and want to know more about about inheritance. Hope you can provide some advice! I see this great post: How to "properly" create a custom object in JavaScript? which talks about how a class is inherited as I see in other websites, ex.: function man(x) { this.x = x; this.y = 2; } man.prototype.name = "man"; man.prototype.two = function() { this.y = "two"; } function shawn() { man.apply(this, arguments); }; shawn.prototype = new man; The above post claims that in order not to call "man"'s constructor while inheriting, one can use a helper like this instead: function subclassOf(base) { _subclassOf.prototype= base.prototype; return new _subclassOf(); } function _subclassOf() {}; shawn.prototype = subclassOf(man); While I understand its intention, I don't see why we can't call shawn.prototype = man.prototype; I see it works exactly the same.   Hi, I'm working on a C# Webservice that needs to provide authentication as well as roles and profile management. I need each profile to have a property of type List. (C:\Projects\MyProject\web.config line 58) --- System.Web.HttpException: Could not load type 'System.Collections.Generic.List<String>'. Is there a way to use a generic collection for this purpose?

• Project Euler considered harmful

  Hi, I've done some Project Euler problems and I was able to solve them very fast because I already knew all the theory behind them. I learned that "accidentaly" because I also had to learn it for university. I used to also solve olympiad problems, I wasn't very good but I was solving some of the problems. I've reached the conclusion that Project Euler problems are taken out of their context(and olympiad problems as well). That's why they are hard. Mathematics and it's theory is taught in order to make the problems easy. However, Project Euler apparently makes an invitation at making them hard again. Why ? I honestly think this is a complete waste of time. Mathematicians had centuries at their disposal in order to solve math problems and they developed theories to explain properly why certain things happen. I think olympiad problems and Project Euler problems are really useless. What's your take on Project Euler ? Do you get something out of it or do you just find formulas on some websites and implement the code fast and then get the result and solve the problem ?

• ASP.NET Line Breaks in Title Element

  I'm trying to optimize SEO readability on our websites and one issue I've come across is ASP.NET butchering the title element of my MasterPage. Entered as such in my MasterPage (manually reformatted to remove line breaks caused by the <% %> tags): <title><asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="TitleContent" runat="server" /> - <%=WebsiteSettings.WebsiteName %></title> This is the output I receive: <title> Home - Website Name</title> As you can see ASP.NET is adding preceding and trailing line breaks where the <asp:ContentPlaceHolder /> is substitute becaused Visual Studio auto-formats <asp:Content /> to start and end with a line break. Obviously, this can be prevented in the Visual Studio formatting options, but this is not ideal because I only would want to remove that behavior for the TitleContent placeholder and not the rest. Is there any way I can ensure my Title is trimmed before it is rendered? I am using MVC so code-behind is not an acceptable option.

• sIFR3: controlling a and a:hover styles inside replaced through CSS rather than JS

  For graceful degrading and minimal coding for the sIFR feature on my websites I would want to define styles in CSS as much as possible. Here's what I do: Define a H3 tag to be replaced by sIFR3. H3 comes in varying colors by CSS depending on it's container, say body.blue-txt h3{ color: #009CDA; } body.white-txt h3{ color: #FFFFFF; } body.etc... H3 might contain an anchor (I'm aware of semantical issues, but that's just how it is ... sorry) With setting sIFR.useStyleCheck = true; sIFR3 will show replaced normal H3 text with correct color, but when it contains a link, it shows the Flash default #0000FF .... All fine; I can tweak e.g. blue text in sifr-config.js by using the css-parameter for sIFR.replace(): sIFR.replace(futura, { selector: 'body.blue-txt h3', css: 'a {color: #009CDA; }, a:hover { color: #009CDA; text-decoration: underline; }' }); But that would have to be coded for every single text-color in my sIFR replacements in both JS and CSS. So I would want to make the sIFR.useStyleCheck setting just respect the CSS in sifr-config.css like: body.blue-txt h3{ color: #009CDA; } body.blue-txt h3 a{ color: #009CDA; } body.blue-txt h3 a:hover{ color: #009CDA; text-decoration: underline; } Only this doesn't seem to work ... the link text keeps popping up as #0000FF and the hover is not underlined. Is this just Not A Feature (Yet), or am doing something wrong?

  I'm writing a small C# application that will use Internet Explorer to interact with a couple a websites, with help from WatiN. However, it will also require from time to time to use a proxy. I've came across Programmatically Set Browser Proxy Settings in C#, but this only enables me to enter a proxy address, and I also need to enter a Proxy username and password. How can I do that? Note: It doesn't matter if a solution changes the entire system Internet settings. However, I would prefer to change only IE proxy settings (for any connection). The solution has to work with IE8 and Windows XP SP3 or higher. I'd like to have the possibility to read the Proxy settings first, so that later I can undo my changes. EDIT With the help of the Windows Registry accessible through Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey, i was able to apply a proxy something like this: RegistryKey registry = Registry.CurrentUser.OpenSubKey("Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Internet Settings", true); registry.SetValue("ProxyEnable", 1); registry.SetValue("ProxyServer", "127.0.0.1:8080"); But how can i specify a username and a password to login at the proxy server? I also noticed that IE doesn't refresh the Proxy details for its connections once the registry was changed how can i order IE to refresh its connection settings from the registry? Thanks

• C# Switch-case Loop for Datagridview cells

  Hi, I am working on a form with datagridview and webbrowser controls. I have three columns as URL, username and password in datagridview. What I want to do is to automate the login for some websites that I use frequently. For that reason I am not sure if this is the right approach but I created the below code. The problem is with the argument of switch. I will click the row on datagridview and then click the login_button so that the username and password info will be passed to the related fields on the webpage. Why I need a switch-case loop is because all the webpages have different element IDs for username and password fields.   Is there a good guide or tutorial for people who need to programmatically interact with dynamic websites? There's been a rash of Perl questions about that lately, and I haven't found a good resource to point people toward. I'm asking not because I need one but because I don't want to waste my time writing it if it already exists. Although I'm most interested in Perl, the extra tools and techniques are mostly the same. Typically, I see see these problems in people's questions: Handling, setting, and saving cookies Finding and interacting with forms Handling JavaScript inside your user-agent especially things like onLoad, onSumbit, and Ajax Using HTTP sniffer tools Using Web developer plugins in interactive browsers Interacting with DOM, screen scraping, etc. If there's no good tutorial, I'll add it to my list of things to do (unless someone else wants to do it :). Along the way, if you don't have a suggestion for an existing tutorial, please suggest the things that you think should be in a new one, including links, your favorite tools, and your own user-agent development experiences. I don't care about the particular language you use.

• Add Hexidecimal Header Info to JPEG File Using Java

  I need to add header info to a JPEG file in order to get it to work properly when shared on some websites, I've tracked down the correct info through a lot of Hex digging, but now I'm kind of stuck trying to get it into the file. I know where in the file it needs to go, and I know how long it is, my problem is that RandomAccessFile just overwrites existing data in the file and FileOutputStream appends the data to the end. I don't want either, I want to INSERT data starting at the third byte. My example code: File fileToChange = new File("someimage.jpg"); byte[] i = new byte[2]; i[0] = (byte)Integer.decode("0xcc"); i[1] = (byte)Integer.decode("0xcc"); RandomAccessFile f = new RandomAccessFile(new File("videothing.jpg"), "rw"); long aPositionWhereIWantToGo = 2; f.seek(aPositionWhereIWantToGo); // this basically reads n bytes in the file f.write((byte[])i); f.close(); So this doesn't work because it overwrites, and does not insert, I can't find any way to just insert data into a file

• .NET Membership with Repository Pattern

  My team is in the process of designing a domain model which will hide various different data sources behind a unified repository abstraction. One of the main drivers for this approach is the very high probability that these data sources will undergo significant change in the near future and we don't want to be re-writing business logic when this happens. One data source will be our membership database which was originally implemented using the default ASP.Net Membership Provider. The membership provider is tied to the System.Web.Security namespace but we have a design guideline requiring that our domain model layer is not dependent upon System.Web (or any other implementation/environment dependency) as it will be consumed in different environments - nor do we want our websites directly communicating with databases. I am considering what would be a good approach to reconciling the MembershipProvider approach with our abstracted n-tier architecture. My initial feeling is that we could create a "DomainMembershipProvider" which interacts with the domain model and then implement objects in the model which deal with the repository and handle validation/business logic. The repository would then implement data access using our (as-yet undecided) ORM/data access tool. Are there are any glaring holes in this approach - I haven't worked closely with the MembershipProvider class so may well be missing something. Alternatively, is there an approach that you think will better serve the requirements I described above? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice. Regards, Zac

  I wanted to get into systems programming for linux and wanted to know how to approach that and where to begin. I come from a web development background (Python, PHP) but I also know some C and C++. Essentially, I would like to know: Which language(s) to learn and pursue (I think mainly C and C++)? How/Where to learn those languages specific to Systems Programming? Books, websites, blogs, tutorials etc. Any other good places where I can start this from basics? Any good libraries to begin with? What environment setup (or approx.) do I need? Assuming linux has to be there but I have a linux box which I rarely log into using GUI (always use SSH). Is GUI a lot more helpful or VI editor is enough? (Please let me know if this part of the question should go to serverfault.com) PS: Just to clarify, by systems programming I mean things like writing device drivers, System tools, write native applications which are not present on Linux platform but are on others, play with linux kernel etc.

  i'm developing couple of websites using php (directory script, etc.) and wordpress as cms. i need to improve its performance, by using cdn for static files (css, js, images). the problem is, css and javascript files are generated on the fly. i did that due to yahoo and some expert advice to combine the files into one file. also changing basic color of css files. for the time being, i use couple of small vps but still its not fast enough. i already contact maxcdn and the support guy said that they dont have such kind of services. what i need is: a cdn that will serve the request from user/visitor and there's no file in local disk, the cdn will redirect/fetch it from another domain/server. in vps, it could be done easily using combination of .htaccess and php, but NOT in the cdn. most of cdn only support purely static files. is there any such cdn that will server semi-dynamic files?

  I know, i know... regex is not the best way to extract HTML text. But I need to extract article text from a lot of pages, I can store regexes in the database for each website. I'm not sure how XML parsers would work with multiple websites. You'd need a separate function for each website. In any case, I don't know much about regexes, so bear with me. I've got an HTML page in a format similar to this <html> <head>...</head> <body> <div class=nav>...</div><p id="someshit" /> <div class=body>....</div> <div class=footer>...</div> </body> I need to extract the contents of the body class container. • A stupid question regarding google gadgets. How to host a google gadget? How it works?

  Hi, I spent 5 hours by checking google gadgets websites and FAQs. maybe I am really stupid. I have no idea how to host a gadget. What I knew from reading the google website: 1, I can write gadget with xml, javascript etc.. 2, gadget can be added to igoogle etc.. 3, google can host the gadget for you. 4, gadget can be hosted at anywhere??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the javascript framework and use it. With google gadget, I can not find a download link for the framework. Why? Does google provide its framework? If no, why does google website say it can be hosted anywhere? I am totally confused. A download link is nowhere in google-gadget website. A brief explanation or some helpful links are very welcome!! Thanks a lot!!! Please don't blame me if you think this question is too silly.

• Which parts of Sharepoint do I need to understand to build a publicly facing website?

  I am building a publicly facing website that does the following. Users log in. And then view a list of their customers. They click on a customer to view their past purchases, order them, change them etc. This is not a shopping site by the way. It is a simple look up tool. Note that none of the data accessed by the website is in anything other than a SQL database - no office documents. Also, the login does not use users Windows credentials on a VPN or something like that. Typically I would build this using a standard ASP.NET MVC website. However the client says they want to use Sharepoint. As I understand it, Sharepoint is used for workflow and websites that are collaboration tools such as the components you can see here http://www.sharepointhosting.com/sharepoint-features.html Here are my questions: Would I be right in saying that WSS is completely inappropriate for this task as it comes with an overhead that provides no benefits? If I had to use it, would I need WSS or MOSS? If I had to use it, would I be right in saying the site would consist of : List item a) Web Parts b) And a custom site layout. How do I create one of these?

• Which coding system should I use in Emacs?

  I am a newbie in Emacs, and I am not a programmer. I have just tried to save a simple *.rtf file with some websites and tips on how to use emacs and I got These default coding systems were tried to encode text in the buffer `notes.rtf': (iso-latin-1-dos (315 . 8216) (338 . 8217) (1514 . 8220) (1525 . 8221)) However, each of them encountered characters it couldn't encode: iso-latin-1-dos cannot encode these: ‘ ’ “ ” .... etc, etc, etc Now what is that? Now it is asking me to chose an encoding system Select coding system (default chinese-iso-8bit): I don't even know what an encoding system is, and I would rather not have to choose one every time I try and save a document... Is there any way I can set an encoding system that will work with all my files so I don't have to worry about this? I saw another question and asnswer elsewhere in this website (see it here) and it seems that if I type the following (defun set-coding-system () (setq buffer-file-coding-system 'utf-8-unix)) (add-hook 'find-file-hook 'set-coding-system) then I can have Emacs do this, but I am not sure... • Building a complex view with Three20 - resources?

  I'm using three20 for most of my iPhone app. One of the views I need to create is relatively complex. It needs a top bar (under the nav bar) with some controls and label, an image view below this bar (which occupies most of the body) and another bottom bar with more controls and labels (above the tab bar control). I don't have much UI experience - my only experience with anything UI is laying stuff out using CSS, etc on websites. Apple's online doc seems to assume that the reader knows a bunch about rectangles, layouts, frames, etc or is using InterfaceBuilder. And three20 isn't too well documented either. So my question is: Is it possible to design something like what I describe in IB and then still have a three20-based app use it? If so, any tips/pointers on how would be much appreciated. Can you point me to some documentation that explain how views/controls etc are rendered. I'm pretty sure I can figure it out if I find some decent explanation/tutorial for it.

I was doing freelance web development in PHP for the past 2 years, two months back I hired two more programmer to help me. I will be hiring one more person soon. We maintain 4 websites, all of which are my own, which are continuously being edited by one of us. I learned PHP by myself and have never worked in any other firms. Hence I am new to version control, unit testing and all. Currently, we have development servers on our workstations. When we edit a particular section of a site, we download the code for that particular section (say /news/ or /movies/ or /wallpapers/ ) from the production server to the dev server, makes the changes locally and uploads to the production server (no code review / testing). Because of this, our dev server is always out of date from our prod server. Occasionally, this also create problem when one of us forgets to download the latest copy from prod and overwrites the last change. I know this is very very foolish, but currently our prod server is the only copy that has all the updates and latest changes. Can anyone please suggest which is the best version control system for me? I am more interested in distributed version control, since we don't have a central backup for all our code. I read about Mercurial and Git and found that Mercurial is used in several large open source projects by Mozilla, Sun, Symbian etc. So which one do you think is better for me? Not only version control, if there are any other package that I can use to make my current setup better, please mention that too :) Thanks and Regards, Vinod Mohan

• html5 vs flash - full comparison chart anywhere?

  So since Steve Jobs said Flash sucks and implied that HTML5 can do everything Flash can without the need for a Plugin, I keep hearing those exact words from a lot of People. I would really like to have a Chart somewhere (similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_layout_engines_%28HTML5%29#Form_elements_and_attributes ) that I can just show to those people. Showing all the little things that Flash can do right now, that HTML5/Ajax/CSS is not yet even thinking about. But of course also the things that HTML5 does better. I would like to see details compared like audio playback, realtime audio processing, byte level access, bitmap data manipulation, webcam access, binary sockets, stuff in the works such as P2P technology (adobe stratus) and all the stuff I don't know about myself. Ideally with examples of what can be accomplished with, lets say Binary Sockets (such as a POP3 client) because otherwise it won't mean a lot to non-programmers since they will just say "well we can do without Binary Sockets". And ideally with some current benchmarks and some examples of websites that use this technology. I've searched the web and am surprised not to find anything. So is there such a comparison somewhere? Or does anybody want to create this and post it to Wikipedia? ;-)
