• Write Local File using Adobe Air Iframe

- by user290687
This is driving me mad. I am creating an AIR application and everything is working great. However I would really like to have a form inside an Iframe that when the user clicks submit saves the file to local application storage directory. Right now I am able to do this and save the file with no problems when I just access the HTML page not inside an Iframe. However if I wrap the page in an iframe and hit submit the file does not save. Any code examples would be very much appreciated. When I am using the iframe my code looks as follows<iframe src="jobs/newjob.html" height="800px" width="800px" sandboxRoot="app:/" documentRoot="app:/sandbox"ondominitialize="setupBridge ()">

• SimpleDB direct client access

- by AlexJReid
One of the useful things about S3 for content storage is that a client can directly make a direct HTTP request to download the object. For instance, this is how Twitter serve up avatar images. SimpleDB provides an HTTP interface to data. Rather than having to write a proxy that sits inbetween SimpleDB and the client, is it possible for client software (i.e. desktop, mobile) to make calls to read values from a SimpleDB domain, without sharing credentials that shouldn't be shared? Or is a proxy in-between the only way to go?

• Rails - Paperclip, getting width and height of image in model

- by Corey Tenold
Trying to get the width and height of the uploaded image while still in the model on the initial save. Any way to do this? Here's the snippet of code I've been testing with from my model. Of course it fails on "instance.photo_width". has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :original => "634x471>", :thumb => Proc.new { |instance| ratio = instance.photo_width/instance.photo_height min_width = 142 min_height = 119 if ratio > 1 final_height = min_height final_width = final_height * ratio else final_width = min_width final_height = final_width * ratio end "#{final_width}x#{final_height}" } }, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => ":attachment/:id/:style.:extension", :bucket => 'foo_bucket' So I'm basically trying to do this to get a custom thumbnail width and height based on the initial image dimensions. Any ideas?

• Automatically update audit information on Entity

- by Nix
I have an entity model that has audit information on every table (50+ tables) CreateDate CreateUser UpdateDate UpdateUser Currently we are programatically updating audit information. Ex: if(changed){ entity.UpdatedOn = DateTime. Now; entity.UpdatedBy = Environment.UserName; context.SaveChanges(); } But I am looking for a more automated solution. During save changes, if an entity is created/updated I would like to automatically update these fields before sending them to the database for storage. Any suggestion on how i could do this? Let me know if any more information is needed.

• Android and PHP - Do I need to use sessions?

- by jtnire
I have created an Android App that communicates with a PHP web server. They both send JSON to each other. My App is almost finished, however there is one thing left to do: authentication. Since the user's username and password will be stored in Android SharedPreferences, is there any need to use PHP sessions, given that the user won't need to enter the username/password at every request? Since I can just send the username and password in the HTTP POST header for every request, and that I will be using SSL, is this sufficient? I guess I could add an extra field in the header called 'random' that just adds a random value, just to use as a salt so that the encrypted SSL payload will be different everytime. The reason why I don't want to use sessions is that my Android App would either have to handle cookies, or managed the storage of the session ID. If there are some serious cons to using my method above, then I'm more than happy to use sessions, however all advice is appreciated. Thanks

• how to play an encrypted file in Android.

- by user306517
I need to be able to play an encrypted file in Android. The file is AAC. The only way I can see to do this is either: decrypt the file to internal private storage and point the player at that file to play, or decrypt & decode the file to pcm and feed it to an AudioTrack. 1 isn't great because it takes a long time to do that. 2 isn't great either because I don't know how I can take advantage of the HW decoder to do this. Any ideas? tia.

• How to scale thumbnail to fit depending on tall or wide photo - Attachment_fu

- by adamwstl
I'm using attachment_fu and Rmagick to create thumbnails after upload. The thumbnail is a fixed 135 x 135 px and I'm currently forcing the width to 135px on all photos. The problem is that if it's a wide and fat photo is has to stretch the height awkwardly. Current Attachment_fu setup class PhotoImage < Image belongs_to :photo has_attachment :content_type => :image, :size => 0..5.megabytes, :storage => :s3, :resize_to => '650x>', :thumbnails => { :thumbnail => '135x>' }#:geometry => 'x50' } validates_as_attachment end Here's what I'm trying to do: Thanks

• How do I choose a database?

- by liamzebedee
I need a comparison table of some sort for database varieties (MySQL, SQLite etc.). I can't find one. My use case is, I am implementing storage of objects in a distributed hash table. I need a database solution that is: Fast for sorting Simplistic (no users, preferably no additional structures like multiple tables etc.) Concurrent (if possible) Multi-platform File based (not stored in memory primarily) Centralized I will be programming in Go. As I understand, I believe I need what is called a Document Orientated Database, because I am storing objects, identified by keys. EDIT: While I am implementing a DHT, I will also be storing metadata about the objects, such as access counts etc. It would also be preferable to have TLL (time to live)

• Emulating a transaction-safe SEQUENCE in MySQL

- by Michael Pliskin
We're using MySQL with InnoDB storage engine and transactions a lot, and we've run into a problem: we need a nice way to emulate Oracle's SEQUENCEs in MySQL. The requirements are: - concurrency support - transaction safety - max performance (meaning minimizing locks and deadlocks) We don't care if some of the values won't be used, i.e. gaps in sequence are ok. There is an easy way to archieve that by creating a separate InnoDB table with a counter, however this means it will take part in transaction and will introduce locks and waiting. I am thinking to try a MyISAM table with manual locks, any other ideas or best practices?

• Pre loaded database on iPhone?

- by Julian
Hi, I have recently developed an app using core data as the storage db. The app allowed the user to read and write to the db. I am now developing a new app which the user doesnt need to write anything to the db, instead the app just needs to read the data. The data has relationships etc so cannot just use a plist or something similar. My question is should I use core data for such a requirement and if so how would i go about entering the data and then releasing the app. Would I have to code the data entry which would populate the db then remove all this code (as I dont want the database to repopulate every time the user opens the app)?? Is there a way to create a core data model using sql commands as with sqlite ie insert into..... etc? Any ideas/thoughts would be very helpful. Many thanks Jules

• Reporting system for organization. Architecture advise required

- by Andrew Florko
We have several legacy & 3'd-party systems in organization that use several RDBMS vendors (& more specific data storages). Cross-system data reporting (as well as extra-reports that are not implemented in 3'd-party systems) is required with charts and population of templates (winword, excel). Reporting system is visioned as intranet web-site with custom user access to reports. We expect ~50 reports per day. Would you suggest to use BizTalk or any other integration software if commercial-department doesn't plan to buy anything expensive. Would you suggest to create centralized data storage for reporting that is populated regularly or rely on on-demand services that providers always up-to-request data. Thank you in advance!

• How to write custom SQLite functions in Javascript inside a Webkit browser?

- by Jay Godse
I have just learned how to use the SQLite database for local storage in a Webkit web browser (e.g. Google Chrome or Apple Safari) using the Javascript API. For example the "Sticky Notes" application. However, I know that SQLite has a function called sqlite_create_function() that lets you add custom functions to your instance of SQLite on the fly which can then be used inside SQL queries. This function is described at sqlite.org. I also know that you can call an equivalent of this API in Ruby as described here. QUESTION: Can anybody show me how to do this in Javascript - i.e. write a custom function in Javascript that can be bound into the SQLite database at run time to be called by the SQLite engine, and all inside a Webkit browser?

• Are MongoDB and CouchDB perfect substitutes?

- by raoulsson
I haven't got my hands dirty yet with neither CouchDB nor MongoDB but I would like to do so soon... I also have read a bit about both systems and it looks to me like they cover the same cases... Or am I missing a key distinguishing feature? I would like to use a document based storage instead of a traditional RDBMS in my next project. I also need the datastore to handle large binary objects (images and videos) automatically replicate itself to physically separate nodes rendering the need of an additional RDBMS superfluous Are both equally well suited for these requirements? Thanks!

• Is there a way to shift the equation numbering one tab space from the right margin (shift towards le

- by Murari
I have been formatting my dissertation and one little problem is stucking me up. I used the following code to typeset an equation \begin{align} & R=\frac{P^2}{P+S'} \label{eqn:SCS}\\ &\mbox {where} \quad \mbox R = \mbox {Watershed Runoff} \notag\\ &\hspace{0.63in} \mbox P = \mbox{Rainfall} \notag\\ &\hspace{0.63in} \mbox S' = \mbox{Storage in the watershed $=\frac{1000}{CN}-10$ }\notag \end{align} My output requirement is such that: The equation should begin one tab space from the left margin The equation number should end at one tab space from the right margin With the above code, I have the equation begin at the right place but not the numbering. Any help will be extremely appreciated. Thanks MP

• What is the right method for parsing a blog post?

- by Zedwal
Hi guys, Need a guide line .... I am trying to write a personal blog. What is the standard structure for for input for the post. I am trying the format like: This is the simple text And I am bold text. This is the code part:
public static void main (String args[]) { System.out.println("Hello World!"); }
Is this the right way to store post in the database? And What is the right method to parse this kind of post? Shall I use regular expression to parse this or there is another standard for this. If the above mentioned format is not the right way for storage, then what it could be? Thanks

• efficient video format/codec for sparse & binary blob tracking

- by user391339
I am working on a blob tracking project and have many high-definition videos that I would like to reduce in size for storage and downstream tracking/shape-analysis. I want to use a lossless method that takes advantage of the black and white nature of the video as well as the fact that not much is moving between individual frames. The videos are quite sparse, with 5 to 10 b&w blobs per frame occupying <30% of the space in total, with each blob moving <5-10% of the field of view between frames and not changing shape too much between 2-3 frames. I will work in Python, Matlab, or LabView for this project, and could use a batch utility if available. It may be worthwhile to export the files as compressed image stacks if a proper video format can't be found. What are the pros and cons of this? A video codec uses correlations between neighboring frames, so it should be more efficient, but not if the wrong one is chosen or if it is improperly configured.

• How to deploy App_Data files with Azure cloud service (web role)

- by user2977157
I have a read-only data file (for IP geolocation) that my web role needs to read. It is currently in the App_Data folder, which is NOT included in the deployment package for the cloud service. Unlike "web deploy", there is no checkbox for an azure cloud service deployment to include/exclude App_Data. Is there a reasonable way to get the deployment package to include the App_Data folder/files? Or is using Azure storage for this sort of thing the better way to go? (cost and performance wise) Am using Visual Studio 2013 and the Azure SDK 2.2

• Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

- by Ben Aston
It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

• trouble setting up TreeViews in pygtk

- by Chris H
I've got some code in a class that extends gtk.TreeView, and this is the init method. I want to create a tree view that has 3 columns. A toggle button, a label, and a drop down box that the user can type stuff into. The code below works, except that the toggle button doesn't react to mouse clicks and the label and the ComboEntry aren't drawn. (So I guess you can say it doesn't work). I can add rows just fine however. #make storage enable/disable label user entry self.tv_store = gtk.TreeStore(gtk.ToggleButton, str, gtk.ComboBoxEntry) #make widget gtk.TreeView.__init__(self, self.tv_store) #make renderers self.buttonRenderer = gtk.CellRendererToggle() self.labelRenderer = gtk.CellRendererText() self.entryRenderer = gtk.CellRendererCombo() #make columns self.columnButton = gtk.TreeViewColumn('Enabled') self.columnButton.pack_start(self.buttonRenderer, False) self.columnLabel = gtk.TreeViewColumn('Label') self.columnLabel.pack_start(self.labelRenderer, False) self.columnEntry = gtk.TreeViewColumn('Data') self.columnEntry.pack_start(self.entryRenderer, True) self.append_column(self.columnButton) self.append_column(self.columnLabel) self.append_column(self.columnEntry) self.tmpButton = gtk.ToggleButton('example') self.tmpCombo = gtk.ComboBoxEntry(None) self.tv_store.insert(None, 0, [self.tmpButton, 'example label', self.tmpCombo]) thanks.

• What are the implications of using static const instead of #define?

- by Simon Elliott
gcc complains about this: #include <stdio.h> static const int YY = 1024; extern int main(int argc, char*argv[]) { static char x[YY]; } $ gcc -c test1.c test1.c: In function main': test1.c:5: error: storage size of x' isn't constant test1.c:5: error: size of variable `x' is too large Remove the “static” from the definition of x and all is well. I'm not exactly clear what's going on here: surely YY is constant? I had always assumed that the "static const" approach was preferable to "#define". Is there any way of using "static const" in this situation?

• Database system that is not relational.

- by paan
What are the other types of database systems out there. I've recently came across couchDB that handles data in a non relational way. It got me thinking about what other models are other people is using. So, I want to know what other types of data model is out there. (I'm not looking for any specifics, just want to look at how other people are handling data storage, my interest are purely academic) The ones I already know are: RDBMS (mysql, postgres etc..) Document based approach (couchDB, lotus notes) Key/value pair (BerkeleyDB)

• Sorting 1 million 8-digit numbers in 1MB of RAM

- by Favourite Chigozie Onwuemene
I have a computer with 1M of RAM and no other local storage. I must use it to accept 1 million 8-digit decimal numbers over a TCP connection, sort them, and then send the sorted list out over another TCP connection. The list of numbers may contain duplicates, which I must not discard. The code will be placed in ROM, so I need not subtract the size of my code from the 1M. I already have code to drive the ethernet port and handle TCP/IP connections, and it requires 2k for its state data, including a 1k buffer via which the code will read and write data. Is there a solution to this problem?

• Android card based game, need help to start

- by user331296
Hello, I'm just setting out in android development. I want to make a kind of card based game. I'm just looking for suggestions really on how I might start it. I know I have to make the menu layout and view, then use an Intent from that to get to the main game view. My sticking points are: -There's going to be a deck of cards. It's going to be a set number so I was thinking I could just have each card defined as a button in the layout. I don't know if that is the right way to do it though. -Storage of card details. I'm thinking of using an xml file to store these. Thanks in advance.

• Simple, Custom Parsing with c++

- by bradkovach
Hi! I have been reading SO for some time now, but I truly cannot find any help for my problem. I have a c++ assignment to create an IAS simulator. Here is some sample code... 0 1 a 1 2 b 2 c 3 1 10 begin 11 . load a, subtract b and offset by -1 for jump+ 11 load M(0) 12 sub M(1) 13 sub M(3) 14 halt Using c++, I need to be able to read these lines and store them in a "memory register" class that I already have constructed... For example, the first line would need to store "1 a" in register zero. How can I parse out the number at the line beginning and then store the rest as a string? I have setup storage using a class that is called using mem.set(int, string);. int is the memory location at the beginning of the line and string is the stored instruction.
