• Wireless very slow. Changed mode from Infracstructure to Ad-hoc

  This is my first time using Linux so go easy on me :) I downloaded and installed Mint 11 couple of days ago and I was having trouble connecting to internet with wifi. Actually it says it connects but does not load any webpages. I tried to get help from this model of laptop owners (Asus G73SW) who uses mostly Ubuntu but they said they never had any problem right from install. So I decided to try out Ubuntu 11.04. Same thing. BUT now I get internet after going into Network Connection edit and changing the Mode from Infracstructure to Ad-Hoc. I get load pages but very slow. And if I'm not mistaken, as I was writing this paragraph, I might have been disconnected. However the wifi bar is full. Please help me this newb because I really want to keep using Ubuntu but I might just have to go back to W7 if nothing can be done. Thank you!

  At my first workplace we were using Digital Standard MUMPS on a PDP 11-clone (TPA 440), then we've switched to Micronetics Standard MUMPS running on a Hewlett-Packard machine, HP-UX 9, around early 90's. Is still MUMPS alive? Are there anyone using it? If yes, please write some words about it: are you using it in character mode, does it acts as web server? etc. (I mean Caché, too.) If you've been used it, what was your feelings about it? Did you liked it?

• Deferred contexts and inheriting state from the immediate context

  I took my first stab at using deferred contexts in DirectX 11 today. Basically, I created my deferred context using CreateDeferredContext() and then drew a simple triangle strip with it. Early on in my test application, I call OMSetRenderTargets() on the immediate context in order to render to the swap chain's back buffer. Now, after having read the documentation on MSDN about deferred contexts, I assumed that calling ExecuteCommandList() on the immediate context would execute all of the deferred commands as "an extension" to the commands that had already been executed on the immediate context, i.e. the triangle strip I rendered in the deferred context would be rendered to the swap chain's back buffer. That didn't seem to be the case, however. Instead, I had to manually pull out the immediate context's render target (using OMGetRenderTargets()) and then set it on the deferred context with OMSetRenderTargets(). Am I doing something wrong or is that the way deferred contexts work?

• Upgraded Ubuntu 12.04 -> 12.10 and Drupal 7 site now get error

  I do all my Drupal 7 webdev and today I took advantage to upgrade my local WebDev box O/S to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04 and now I get the following errors for all my D7 projects on my localhost WebDev box (Ubuntu 12.10) It was all fine pre Ubuntu 12.04: Error The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later. Error message PDOException: SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1286 Unknown storage engine 'InnoDB': SELECT expire, value FROM {semaphore} WHERE name = :name; Array ( [:name] => variable_init ) in lock_may_be_available() (line 167 of /var/www/jobsdaily/includes/lock.inc). A quick research and look into the phpmyadmin (3.4.11.1) and it seems InnoDB is an issue and when I click on a table to see data I get #1286 - Unknown storage engine 'InnoDB'. I have all my D7 sql backed up, but don't really want to go down the whole 'import' route, since it's 10 months work! Anyone had this issues and can anyone suggest fix ideas? Thanks

• Geronimo 3 beta - Another Apache project now compatible with Java EE 6

  You probably recall the addition of TomEE and WebSphere CE at JavaOne 2011 to the list of certified Java EE 6 products. This time, Apache Geronimo 3 beta 1 was released with compatibility with the Java EE 6 full platform and is now listed on the Java EE Compatibility Page in both the Web Profile and Full Platform categories. Not surprisingly, a good number of the components used in this Geronimo release are similar to those used in the TomEE certification. We now have 11 compatible Java EE 6 configurations to chose from and expecting more soon.

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? Why have I lost all my google image juice? Should I just wait some more, how long before really worrying?

• KDE's Dolphin Can't See Connected devices such as Nikon, Canon Cameras

  I have noticed this problem across all distros including Kubuntu and openSUSE. Many times my Nikon D 7000 and Canon HF 11 are not seen or mounted by Dolphin. When I connect the Cameras I don't get any notification in the tray which otherwise shows connected device. Ironically when I open Nautilus then I can clearly see the cameras mounted. I also have a request that what these devices don't appear on Dolphin's side panel automatically.   I tried to install Skype on my ubuntu 12.10 via command line $ sudo apt-get install skype I received this error : The following packages have unmet dependencies: libasound2-plugins:i386 : Depends: libasound2:i386 (>= 1.0.25) but it is not going to be installed skype-bin:i386 : Depends: libasound2:i386 (>= 1.0.23) but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. • Black screen after login, after Kubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

  After upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 I have troubles with Xorg - all boot process goes fine, but I have a black screen when Xorg starts (KDE starts, and I can hear AC adapter (dis)connect sounds). Trouble is in Xorg only, framebuffer console (ctrl-alt-f2) works fine, backlight turns on when I switch to console and turns off again after I switch back to X. All worked fine before release upgrade. I'm running AMD64 version of Kubuntu 13.10 on Samsung RV508 (Intel i915 graphic, no EFI) notebook. Xorg 1.14.3, kernel 3.11.0-12 UPDATE: I have tried to boot using old kernel (3.8.0-13) and now it's working fine with that kernel.

  Ethernet works fine after system is rebooted The onboard card is seen in 'lspci' as: 43:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Yukon Optima 88E8059 [PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller with AVB] (rev 11) After system being suspended the sky2 driver loads but does not enable the NIC. I have noticed that it happens when PC is left suspended for longer period of time (few houres) Trying to reproduce it I have tried to load the sky2 driver with 'modprobe sky2'. Unfortunately typing 'ifconfig -a' for the onboard ethernet adapter does not list the driver once the sky2 driver is loaded. I have searched internet and I found some information about a bug in kernel. Hovewer it was reported in 2010 so I hope it has been fixed.   With a simple search in amazon one can see that the modern approach for parallel programming is to use your graphic card. However I am still a little bit skeptical about it. My last computer has an 8 core CPU which I need is enough for basic all my parallel needs, if I need more I will probably use MPI through a network using my old machines. All in all, Why and/or when should I use CUDA or another method which uses my graphic card instead of traditional methods like pthreads, java threads, boost threads or the new C++ 11 threads? What about using processes?

  Over on his blog Juan has been showing you how simple it is to develop a rich Web user interface with ADF accessing Oracle E-Business Suite data and even exposing it on an iPad. In this entry I'm starting from his sample application and I'm showing how easy it is to build an interface that will look great on an iPhone (or other mobile devices) using Oracle ADF Mobile Browser. For those of you who are just using ADF and never tried ADF Mobile Browser - you'll find that the development experience is quite familiar and similar to your normal Web application development. In the latest version of JDeveloper (11.1.2.1) which I'm usingin this demo we have a built-in skin that will give your application the native iOS look and feel. In the demo I achieve this by setting the styleclass of a tr:panelHeader component to af_m_toolbar to get this. • Odds For Fighting Game

  I'm creating a fighting game where two opponents face off against each other in the ring. While I've been able to figure out the odds of a player winning based on previous wins/losses, I have yet to find a formula which modifies those odds based on opponent. For example: Player 1: W:5 L:5 - 1/1 odds Player 2: W:5 L:0 - 1/5 odds I want to calculate the odds that Player 1 will wins against player 2. Compounding this the players could be of different levels: if the players are within a few levels of each other, the odds should map closely to wins/losses. However, as the levels diverge, the odds of the lower level player winning reduce. As a swag: Player 1 - W:5 L:5 - 1:1 odds Against a level 8 - 1:2 Against a level 9 - 2:3 Against a level 10 - 1:1 Against a level 11 - 3:2 Against a level 12 - 2:1 These are just estimates, my sense is that there is a math formula out there which will calculate that - can anyone out there point me to what this could be? • How to save one role implementing a client/server pattern in Azure?

  Sometimes you need to have an instance performing a server role when other instances are playing the client role. An example can be a file sharing like in this great post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mariok/archive/2011/02/11/sharing-folders-in-azure.aspx, one instance shares a folder that all other instances are using to write files that the server processes. The problem is that there is not discovering mechanism in Azure that allows one instance to know where the instance acting as a server is located. A first approach can be having a server role and a client role like in the previous post. This means more instances, more money. A solution to save this "server" role is to use Instance 0, always available, to act as a server. An instance can know that it should act as the server checking RoleEnvironment.CurrentRoleInstance.Id.EndsWith(".0"). Other instances can iterate the RoleEnvironment Instances collection to find the instance whose name ends with ".0", getting its endpoints and acting as its clients.
