• Access the internal phonebook

  For more than two days now, I'm trying to grab a list of all contacts, from the internal phonebook (no facebook-, gmail- or twittercontacts) with their family- and givenname. I managed to get a list with all contacts, socialcontacts included. So I looked at the account_type and saw that on my HTC Desire they were all "com.htc.android.pcsc" and I was like "Great, I just have to filter the whole list". But then all people with non-htc android cellphones would be unable to use my app, if I would hardcode this filter. Next idea was to let the user choose which account he wants to use, but unfortunately the "com.htc.android.pcsc" didn't appear in the list I got from the AccountManager?!? So my question is: Is there any standardized way to access the internal phonebook? I'm really stuck with that and any hint is highly appreciated!

• Execute jQuery code when images have loaded from external resource

  Hi all, I'm getting users profile pictures from Facebook so their loading time varies quite a lot. When they have loaded I want to resize them. I have the resizing code working OK, but cannot get the actual code to execute reliably at the right time. According to the info I've found this should work: $('.userPic').load(function () { ... code to resize pictures }); But it doesn't seem 100% reliable. Any other hints or tips? Thanks Nick Swan

• FlashBuilder4 RIA on GAE

  I've read/watched most of your blog/tuts and it seems you are the "beautiful front-ends for Java based back-ends" guru ;) That (sucking up ;) said, I want to build a highly scalable "facebook for business" and after much testing am pretty set on FlashBuilder4 (Flex) with Google App Engine (GAE). What are your thoughts on the need/advisability of also using Spring/Cairngorm/etc frameworks? Frankly I don't have extensive experience coding, however feel the "MVC utopia" universally aspired to becomes convoluting when duplicating between front and back ends as envisioned above (i.e. Flex/ActionScript and GAE/Java respectively).

  Hello, in my website, I want to add a "invite friend of my contacts book" functionnality. I would like that the user fills the loggin form in my website. Then the website contacts Google Mail, Yahoo Mail, Live Mail and retrieves the contact list. In the Oauth protocole supported by Google and Yahoo, the user is redirected to a Google or Yahoo page (like Facebook) in order to permit the user to give permissions. But I saw two websites which didn't any redirections to get the contacts book (LinkedIn for a Google mail account and Theauteurs with a live mail.) Do you know how I can get a contacts book without redirect the user to Google, Microsoft or Yahoo website.

• How do they do it? Dialogs over home screen.

  Hi all, I'm writing an Android application and I would like to place a dialog or view over the home screen so that a user can enter text without jumping into my full application. I can't seem to get this to work. If I present a dialog (even in a transparent activity), my application launches. If you don't know what I'm talking about, take a look at the Facebook widget. • Anchors requiring multiple clicks to fire

  'This is bizarre bug. I have CSS3 anchors/buttons, which I've continued to strip properties out of, that sometimes require multiple clicks to fire. I know that in normal scenario there may be machine dedicated to this task, but I would like to know how is it resolved in realy big aplication with hundreds of thousans people accessing it in any given time. I am just wondering how exactly when one types google.com will that request find its way to concrete computer (are there multiple load balancers? and how is it set up and implemented that user's request will find the way to concrete balancer out of many others). • Linkedin: Registering Application for both Web and Mobile

  My project deals with both Web app and Mobile app. So before we can use Linkedin API's into our project we need to register our app with Linkedin according to this Quick Start. But for my situation where i use Linkedin API's for both web and mobile, Do i need to register two application with Linkedin. Or is there any other way to register a single application and use the same for both web and mobile? In the registration page i don't see any distinction for Web and Mobile, unlike facebook where a single application registered can be used for both web and mobile app. If anyone could point me to appropriate docs or pointers, it would be really helpful.   This is a question that is based on choosing performance over design practices. If I have a method that will be executed many times a second; public static IQueryable<IPerson> InRadius(this IQueryable<IPerson> query, Coordinate center, double radius) { return (from u in query where CallHeavyMathFormula(u, center, radius) select u); } This extension method for IQueryable generates a SQL that does some heavy maths calculation (Cosine, Sine, etc). This would mean the application sends 1-2KB of sql to the server per call. I've heard of placing all application logic, in your application. I also would like to change to a database such as azure or one of those scalable databases in the future. How do I handle something like this? Should I leave it as it is now or write stored procedures? How do applications like twitter or facebook do it?

• How to suppress javascript errors for sites I'm not developing?

  I like to keep javascript debugging enabled in my browser so when I'm developing my own code I can instantly see when I've made an error. Of course this means I see errors on apple.com, microsoft.com, stackoverflow.com, cnn.com, facebook.com. Its quite fun sometimes to see just how much awful code there is out there being run by major sites but sometimes it gets really annoyed. I've wondered for YEARS how to change this but never really got around to it. Its particularly annoying today and I'd really like to know of any solutions. The only solution I have is : use a different browser for everyday browsing. I'm hopin theres some quick and easy plugin someone can direct me to where I can toggle it on and off based upon the domain i'm on. Edit: I generally use IE7 for everyday browsing

  If got a CustomCell loaded using: NSArray *nibObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"CustomCell" owner:nil options:nil]; I have no problems with the tableview but when I select a row I want display more information on that row(like facebook app)... using the typical "show more". At the beginning the row show "title" and "description". When I select that row i want to show "title", "description" and a webview... and, of course, make the row bigger to accommodate that objects. • Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

(checker.php echo out how many points you've got in a span class vispoints1). Now isnt there a smarter method doing this, instead of sending requests like this all the time.. I mean sites like facebook and that, they dont do like this to check if you e.g got a new friend request? Hope you can help me find a better method examples would be good too.

I need to set a cookie from any domain (out of my control), lets say "Domain B" to my main domain, lets say "Domain A", and be able to read the cookie also, without exiting Domain B. kinda like Facebook connect for websites, or Snap.com, and others of the sort. how it that done?   I have some problems with the email system for CodeIgniter: First, the emails I send out (registration, confirmations) are getting caught in standard spam filters in gmail and other mail clients. How do I get around this? How do companies like Facebook get their emails through consistently?   So ordinarily the element I want to pick from a list would be populated on a page and I'd just find it and pick it. But I'm dealing with a control that doesn't populate list elements until some input has been stuck into a text box, after which it gives me a list of recommendations. For an example of the kind of list I'm talking about think of Facebook's "People, Places, and Things" search field. I want to plug a string into this text box, select the same string from the list of recommendations, and submit the form. The issue I'm having right now is I can't seem to get Mechanize to even recognize the field is there. I examine a dump of $mech->find_all_inputs and it isn't listed. Is this kind of field just beyond Mechanize's jurisdiction?

• Securing a REST API

  I am in the middle of developing a REST API - the first one I ever have. The data being passed through the API is not of such a critical nature that there will be loss of life, economics etc if it was intercepted but at the same time I would like it to be secure. The data being transferred is simply like the data that would be transferred on Twitter or Facebook - not overly confidential but still should be kept private. What is the best way to secure this data? Am I best to use HTTP Basic Auth over SSL or should I be looking into something like OAuth. • Pushing notifications to a JavaScript?

  I'm just wondering if there is a way to have a server push information to a JavaScript function. Essentially I have a Dashboard-type page that has a javaScript function to get updates from the server and update the dashboard. I would like my server to be able to "ping" the JS. I don't even know how that could be possible (I'm guessing Twitter and Facebook use polling?), but I'd thought I ask. I heard of Comet, but I don't know if that works with a plain standard IIS 7 installation? (It's a SharePoint 2010 site if that matters in any way) If I understand it correctly, Comet is essentially a constantly open connection, so it seems like it's actually the opposite of what I want (reducing # of requests and therefore load)
