  • Problem accessing MICROSOFT##SSEE database (Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.)

    - by Philipp Schmid
After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

  • App Stores&ndash; In All Things, Its Quality Over Quantity

    - by D'Arcy Lussier
Everybody has an opinion about Windows 8. People love it, people hate it, people are meh about it, people are apparently buying it from Microsoft stores in NYC as if it was water before a natural disaster…if there’s one thing that Microsoft product launches do well, its the ability to bring out strong emotional responses. Over at eweek.com, Don Reisinger wrote about 5 good and bad things about Windows 8. Yes, another opinion piece on WIndows 8. I figured since this one had good and bad it might be worthwhile to read. I then came across #10 on his list, and figured “What the hell…might as well post a bit of a rant on Windows 8 myself!” Here’s #10: 10. Bad: Too few apps Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn’t able to get too many developers to start producing applications for its Windows 8 Store. Microsoft hasn’t yet released official numbers, but some have said that the marketplace has less than 8,000 programs. Considering Apple’s App Store has 100 times that, it’s about time Microsoft starts leaning on developers to get more programs into its store. Believe me, Microsoft *has* been leaning on developers to get apps into the store. I’ve been asked at least 5 or 6 times from 5 or 6 different friends at Microsoft about whether I was going to write a Windows 8 app. I think Microsoft felt they had to try and address the number of apps available in their marketplace, since some people (like Don) would draw comparisons to the number of apps in the Apple marketplace. I feel for Microsoft in this, since the number of apps in a marketplace are an empty stat. Quality of Quantity I have an iPad that my family (wife, 10yo daughter, 3yo daughter) use. We all have our own apps installed on it. In addition, my wife has an iPhone 4S that she also installs apps on. As someone who gets asked by his kids often whether they can buy/download an app, the vast majority of the vast catalogue of iOS marketplace apps are crap! Do you realize how many “free” games are out there, only to really be not-free because you have to purchase in-game content to make the game actually playable? And how about searching – with such a vast array of apps and such high numbers of craptastic ones, trying to find something is incredibly difficult and can be frustrating. I would rather see that Microsoft has 8000 high quality apps in their store at launch, instead of 800000 that were mostly junk. Too Few Apps?! And seriously, 8000 is not a small number. How many iOS apps have I actually bought between the iPad and iPhone? I’ll be generous and say 30…heck, let’s round it up to 40. It’s not like I have 10,000 apps installed on my iPad, nor will that ever happen! So if people have, at the *launch* of a new platform ecosystem, EIGHT THOUSAND apps to choose from, I don’t see that as a fail at all! It should be noted that most of the most common apps (Netflix, Skype, etc.) are available for Windows 8 at launch – I guess I’ll have to wait a few weeks for My Pony Ranch and all its clones to start showing up; pity. Let’s Check Back in a Year So look, let’s check back in a year’s time and see what the app store looks like. My hope is that Microsoft doesn’t continue to push quantity over quality. Even knowing the optics that # of apps in the store carries and the pressure to catch Apple and Android marketplaces, I hope Microsoft avoids the scenario where there’s a good percentage of apps in the Windows Store that are utter rubbish and finding the gems will be cumbersome. But if that happens, we can thank guys like Dan who raised the false issue of app count at the launch for it.

  • How do I create a Linked Server in SQL Server 2005 to a password protected Access 95 database?

    - by Brad Knowles
I need to create a linked server with SQL Server Management Studio 2005 to an Access 95 database, which happens to be password protected at the database level. User level security has not been implemented. I cannot convert the Access database to a newer version. It is being used by a 3rd party application; so modifying it, in any way, is not allowed. I've tried using the Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider and the ODBC OLE DB Provider. The 3rd party application creates a System DSN (with the proper database password), but I've not had any luck in using either method. If I were using a standard connection string, I think it would look something like this: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source='C:\Test.mdb';Jet OLEDB:Database Password=####; I'm fairly certain I need to somehow incorporate Jet OLEDB:Database Password into the linked server setup, but haven't figured out how. I've posted the scripts I'm using along with the associated error messages below. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll provide more details if needed, just ask. Thanks! Method #1 - Using the Jet 4.0 Provider When I try to run these statements to create the linked server: sp_dropserver 'Test', 'droplogins'; EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'Test', @provider = N'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', @srvproduct = N'Access DB', @datasrc = N'C:\Test.mdb' GO EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'Test', @useself=N'False',@locallogin=NULL, @rmtuser=N'Admin', @rmtpassword='####' GO I get this error when testing the connection: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ "The test connection to the linked server failed." ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) ------------------------------ The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Test" reported an error. Authentication failed. • Using AuthzSVNAccessFile for controlling SVN Access produces HTTP 400 Bad Request

    - by meeper
I have a new repository on an existing subversion server that requires us to perform path based authorization within the repository. I found that the AuthzSVNAccessFile directive in apache is directly responsible for allowing this functionality. After fixing several other problems such as AuthzSVNAccessFile preventing SVNListParentPath from operating properly, I am left with one single problem. I can checkout, I can update, I can commit, BUT I cannot execute an SVN COPY for performing branch/tagging operations. The moment I comment out the AuthzSVNAccessFile line in the Apache config everything works as expected except the obvious path authorizations. Versions: The server OS is Debian 6.0.7 (Squeeze) Apache 2.2.16-6+squeeze11 Server Subversion 1.6.12dfsg-7 Clients are running windows Clients tried are: TortoiseSVN 1.8.2 Build 24708 64bit SVN CLI Client 1.8.3 (r1516576) Authentication is performed via AD to a Windows 2003 domain and appears to be operating normally. I have stripped out all other configurations and repository setups to produce this single configuration that reproduces the problem. Apache Configuration: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName svn-test.company.com ServerAlias /svn-test ServerAdmin [email protected] SSLEngine On SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache2/apache.pem ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/svn-test_error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog /var/log/apache2/svn-test_access.log combined ServerSignature On # Repository Access to all Repositories <Location "/"> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn SVNListParentPath on AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthType Basic AuthzLDAPAuthoritative Off AuthName "Subversion Test Repository System" AuthLDAPURL "ldap://adserver.company.com:389/DC=corp,DC=company,DC=com?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=*)" NONE AuthLDAPBindDN "CN=service_account,OU=ServiceIDs,OU=corp,OU=Delegated,DC=na,DC=corp,DC=company,DC=com" AuthLDAPBindPassword service_account_password Require valid-user SSLRequireSSL </Location> # <LocationMatch /.+> is a really dirty trick to make listing of repositories work # http://d.hatena.ne.jp/shimonoakio/20080130/1201686016 <LocationMatch /.+> AuthzSVNAccessFile /etc/apache2/svn_path_auth </LocationMatch> </VirtualHost> SVN Access File: [/] * = rw The repository used (AuthTestBasic) consists of the following directory structure and contains no externals (this is a literal listing, not an example): / /branches/ /tags/ /trunk/ /trunk/somefile.txt Tortoise produces the following error during a tag operation in it's tag result window: Adding directory failed: COPY on /authtestbasic/!svn/bc/2/trunk (400 Bad Request) The svn.exe CLI client produces the following error: C:\Users\e20epkt>svn copy https://servername/authtestbasic/trunk https://servername/authtestbasic/tags/tag1 -m "svn cli client" svn: E175002: Adding directory failed: COPY on /authtestbasic/!svn/bc/2/trunk (400 Bad Request) The Apache error log has nothing in it, however the apache access log has the following in it (IP addresses and usernames changed obviously): 10.1.2.100 - I have also confirmed that all files for the repository (/var/svn/authtestbasic) are owned by the Apache user www-data.

  • Issue with Sharepoint 2010 application page

    - by Matt Moriarty
    I am relatively new to Sharepoint and am using version 2010. I am having a problem with the following code in an application page I am trying to build: using System; using Microsoft.SharePoint; using Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls; using System.Text; using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration; using Microsoft.Office.Server; using Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles; using Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities; namespace SharePointProject5.Layouts.SharePointProject5 { public partial class ApplicationPage1 : LayoutsPageBase { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { SPContext context = SPContext.Current; StringBuilder output = new StringBuilder(); using(SPSite site = context.Site) using (SPWeb web = site.AllWebs["BDC_SQL"]) { UserProfileManager upmanager = new UserProfileManager(ServerContext.GetContext(site)); string ListMgr = ""; string ADMgr = ""; bool allowUpdates = web.AllowUnsafeUpdates; web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true; web.Update(); SPListCollection listcollection = web.Lists; SPList list = listcollection["BDC_SQL"]; foreach (SPListItem item in list.Items) { output.AppendFormat("<br>From List - Name & manager: {0} , {1}", item["ADName"], item["Manager_ADName"]); UserProfile uProfile = upmanager.GetUserProfile(item["ADName"].ToString()); output.AppendFormat("<br>From Prof - Name & manager: {0} , {1}", uProfile[PropertyConstants.DistinguishedName], uProfile[PropertyConstants.Manager]); ListMgr = item["Manager_ADName"].ToString(); ADMgr = Convert.ToString(uProfile[PropertyConstants.Manager]); if (ListMgr != ADMgr) { output.AppendFormat("<br>This record requires updating from {0} to {1}", uProfile[PropertyConstants.Manager], item["Manager_ADName"]); uProfile[PropertyConstants.Manager].Value = ListMgr; uProfile.Commit(); output.AppendFormat("<br>This record has had its manager updated"); } else { output.AppendFormat("<br>This record does not need to be updated"); } } web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = allowUpdates; web.Update(); } Label1.Text = output.ToString(); } } } Everything worked fine up until I added in the 'uProfile.Commit();' line. Now I am getting the following error message: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException was unhandled by user code Message=Updates are currently disallowed on GET requests.   • Drag and Drop in MVVM with ScatterView

    - by Rich McGuire
I'm trying to implement drag and drop functionality in a Surface Application that is built using the MVVM pattern. I'm struggling to come up with a means to implement this while adhering to the MVVM pattern. Though I'm trying to do this within a Surface Application I think the solution is general enough to apply to WPF as well. I'm trying to produce the following functionality: User contacts a FrameworkElement within a ScatterViewItem to begin a drag operation (a specific part of the ScatterViewItem initiates the drag/drop functionality) When the drag operation begins a copy of that ScatterViewItem is created and imposed upon the original ScatterViewItem, the copy is what the user will drag and ultimately drop The user can drop the item onto another ScatterViewItem (placed in a separate ScatterView) The overall interaction is quite similar to the ShoppingCart application provided in the Surface SDK, except that the source objects are contained within a ScatterView rather than a ListBox. I'm unsure how to proceeded in order to enable the proper communication between my ViewModels in order to provide this functionality. The main issue I've encountered is replicating the ScatterViewItem when the user contacts the FrameworkElement.

  • new ActiveXObject('Word.Application') creates new winword.exe process when IE security does not allo

    - by Mark Ott
We are using MS Word as a spell checker for a few fields on a private company web site, and when IE security settings are correct it works well. (Zone for the site set to Trusted, and trusted zone modified to allow control to run without prompting.) The script we are using creates a word object and closes it afterward. While the object exists, a winword.exe process runs, but it is destroyed when the word object is closed. If our site is not set in the trusted zone (Internet zone with default security level) the call that creates the word object fails as expected, but the winword.exe process is still created. I do not have any way to interact with this process in the script, so the process stays around until the user logs off (users have no way to manually destroy the process, and it wouldn't be a good solution even if they did.) The call that attempts to create the object is... try { oWordApplication = new ActiveXObject('Word.Application'); } catch(error) { // irrelevant code removed, described in comments.. // notify user spell check cannot be used // disable spell check option } So every time the page is loaded this code may be run again, creating yet another orphan winword.exe process. oWordApplication is, of course, undefined in the catch block. I would like to be able to detect the browser security settings beforehand, but I have done some searching on this and do not think that it is possible. Management here is happy with it as it is. As long as IE security is set correctly it works, and it works well for our purposes. (We may eventually look at other options for spell check functionality, but this was quick, inexpensive, and does everything we need it to do.) This last problem bugs me and I'd like to do something about it, but I'm out of ideas and I have other things that are more in need of my attention. Before I put it aside, I thought I'd ask for suggestions here...

  • MSDeploy: error using runCommand provider to call remote .cmd file (timeout)

    - by mjw.
We are running into an error when trying to use the MSDeploy "runCommand" provider to execute a .cmd file on a remote machine. The expected run time should be about 10 seconds, but MSDeploy only runs it for about 2-3 seconds, after which time error details are returned. Here is the complete MSDeploy "runCommand" command line text I am using: msdeploy.exe -verb:sync -source:runCommand="D:\web deploy tester\test_cmd.cmd",dontUseCommandExe=false,waitAttempts=5,waitInterval=1000 -dest:auto,computername=http://test-machine:89/MsDeployAgentService/,userName=aaa,password=bbb Here are the error details returned: Error 'Error: (4/21/2010 12:19:25 PM) An error occurred when the request was processed on the remote computer. Error: The process 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe' (command line '/c "D:\web deploy tester\test_cmd.cmd"') was terminated because it exceeded the wait time. Error count: 1. • Cannot connect to a SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services cube after installing SQL Server 2008 SP1.

    - by Luc
I've been developing an application that talks directly to an SSAS 2005 OLAP cube. Note that I also have SQL Server 2008 installed, so the other day I did a Windows Update and decided to include SQL Server 2008 SP1 in my update. After doing that, my SSAS 2005 cube is no longer accessible from my application. I'm able to browse the data just fine within SQL Server 2005 BI Studio Manager, but I'm not able to connect to the cube from my application. Here is my connection string that used to work: Data Source=localhost;Provider=msolap;Initial Catalog=Adventure Works DW Here is the error message I get: Either the user, [Server]/[User], does not have access to the Adventure Works DW database, or the database does not exist. Here is the beginning of my stack trace if it would help: Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient.AdomdErrorResponseException was unhandled by user code HelpLink="" Message="Either the user, Luc-PC\\Luc, does not have access to the Adventure Works DW database, or the database does not exist." This is a (kind of) similar situation as in the SDK Sample Shopping Cart for MS Surface. I have an application with two ScatterViews. The first covers the complete Surface window ('surface'). The second resides in a TagVisualization object ('pod'). There might be more than one pod available (if more than one tag is down on the table). I would like to be able to drag a ScatterViewItem from the 'pod' to the 'surface' or another 'pod'. I have no problems in detecting if a ScatterViewItem is leaving its ScatterView parent. Also, no problems in reparenting the ScatterViewItem. However, I want to detect which ScatterView the item is being dragged on. In the SDK Sample they have used a visual element (an ellipse in this case) which is below the ScatterViews. VisualTreeHelper.HitTest is used to determine if the contact is over the ellipse. If so, the 'connected' ScatterView is found. I don't think this is a very elegant solution. I wouldn't want a visual element put in there, just to detect if a contact is over a ScatterView. Are there betterwways to accomplish this kind of 'hittesting'? Thanks, Bart

  • Silently import a Certificate into a specific Certificate Store.

    - by Pieter van Wyk
Hi. I am attempting to import a Certificate into the Current User - Personal store using the command line: "importpfx -f [certificate name.p12] -p [password] -t USER -s Personal". It works, but for reasons I don't understand there are now two Personal stores under the Current User, and the imported certificate is in the new Personal store. When I try to connect to the website of [a well-known money transfer service], it fails. However, if I manually import the certificate using MMC into the original Personal store, it works. My question is: How can I force IMPORTPFX to import the certificate into the original Personal store, and how can I delete the new Personal store? Context: I need to do a silent import of certificates on 3000+ remote point-of-sale Windows XP devices, so it needs to be a silent install via PSEXEC (SysInternals). Thank you. Pieter.

  • What is MSSRPD?

    - by TN
Recently, I found that some searches in Firefox are redirected to Bing. (Instead of my primary search engine Google.) I am not sure, but it seems that it is not bound to search but rather a hostname resolving. Since entering a single word that might be a hostname redirects to Bing. But entering more words searches using my primary search engine. hey - uses Bing to search hey hey - uses Google to search I found that the resulting search url contains MSSRPD: http://www.bing.com/search?q=hey&form=MSSRPD I am wondering what is the MSSRPD and how can I uninstall/disable, so my primary search engine is used?

  • ScatterViewItems Containing Surface Interactive Elements

    - by James Hay
This is an age old problem of interactive elements inside interactive elements, but I want a ScatterViewItem to contain other surface interactive elements such as a SurfaceButton or SurfaceCheckBox. I've got all my elements in there and they react to taps etc. The problem is that I only get the normal ScatterView behavior once I click on an area that does not contain a control. Is there an elegant solution to allow dragging even when the contact is on a SurfaceButton or SurfaceCheckbox? e.g. <s:ScatterView > <Grid Width="200" Height="200"> <s:SurfaceButton /> </Grid> </s:ScatterView>

  • Restore VisualSVN server from client copy.

    - by Kevin
I am running VisualSVN on a windows VM box. The VM crashed and corrupted the image. After restoring an older image (2007) we discovered that our data backup is not functioning properly. Hence I have a bunch of projects (~20) siting on my laptop (client side) and I want to push them back into the VisualSVN Server, which is now empty. I know this can be done by simply adding the project files manually, but this is going to take along time because I don't want to include every file (i.e. complied files). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • How To Disable Inertia in ScatterView

    - by jack-amble
Using ScatterView control shipped in Windows Touch WPF. I want to prevent inertia from happening on a scatterview item. But I still want to allow user to move, scale and rotate the item. So I try this... ScatterviewItem svi = new ScatterviewItem(); svi.ManipulationDelta += OnManipulationDelta; ... void OnManipulationDelta(object sender, ManipulationDeltaEventArgs args) { if (args.IsInertial) { args.Complete(); args.Handled = true; } } But the event is never firing. Am I doing something wrong, or is there another way to do this, or is preventing inertia simply not possible with scatterview?

  • Microsoft Visual Studio SDK DSL Tools - Any serious takers?

    - by amazedsaint
We are considering Microsoft DSL toolkit for creating some abstract designers. I already did some POCs, but would like to get some opinions on the same. Any one here to share their experiences working with Microsoft DSL Toolkit and T4? Also, any pointers to open source DSL projects will help - Eg. Microsoft Service Factory modeling edition is heavily relying on DSL toolkit. As OSLO/Quadrant will take some time to get released, I think the only option we have is to rely on Microsoft DSL designer. (See Kieth's blog on the same) Also, here is some information I already have on DSL: 1 - A Nice Lab in MSDN on DSL tools 2 - A List of Projects in Codeplex using DSL toolkit

  • App_Code in Web Client Software Factory, Is it a good idea.

    - by Blithe
Hi guys, Just want to hear some opinion on adding App_Code in Web Client Software Factory (WCSF) project. The main purpose is to put reusable UI rendering codes which can be use by various pages. For WCSF, I guess only controller can share across pages within a module which does not seems to be a good place for UI stuff. Suggestions? :)
