• OS X - Automatically Set Execute Permissions for New Files?

  I'm using OS X 10.6.4 and am trying to set a folder to automatically enable execute permissions on new script files copied or created in a directory. I have used Sandbox 2 to set every permission for the folder to enabled with sticky bits and the inherit flag set but I still have to manually set the execute flag using chmod for every new flag. I've done: chmod -R a+rwxs ~/scripts I've done: chmod 7777 ~/scripts And the permissions for the folder show as: drwsrwsrwt+ for the folder. But if I add a new script file it's set to "-rw-r--r--+" (the default) I looked at setting "unmask 000" in the .profile file but the default value for files is 666 with an unmask of 022 so that's not relevant since I would need a default value of 777 for files. I have figure out how to use chmod in an AppleScript triggered by a folder action to automate this but I'm wondering if there is a simple ACL or chmod setting I'm missing. So, is there a way to automatically set execute permission for new files? (Without using a folder action and AppleScript?)

• Include new rows in autofilter range

  I am working with an excel 2007 worksheet that has the "filter" applied so that each column heading has a pull-down menu for sorting. When I add new rows to the end of the table by cut-n-paste from the last row, these new rows are not included in the sorting. I can't seem to get the newly added rows to be included in the filter range. I tried un-selecting and re-selecting the "filter" button and also tried the "reapply" button. The "clear" button is always greyed out. I can't seem to find any relevant help for this online anywhere. Not sure if it matters, but the heading row and the first column are set to be "sticky" (they don't scroll with the rest of the table.)

• Physics in my game confused after restructuring the Game loop

  Hello! I'm on my way with making a game in Java. Now I have some trouble with an interpolation based game loop in my calculations. What you see here is that I used that delta value from previous frame to the current frame to calculate the physics. Now I switched and implement a interpolation based system and I actually left the current system where I used delta to calculate my physics. However, with the interpolation system the delta time is removed - but now are my calculations screwed up and I've tried the whole day to solve this: Interpolation based system private static final float SPEED_OF_GRAVITY = 500.0f; @Override public void update(Object parentObject) { parentObject.y = parentObject.y + (parentObject.yVelocity); parentObject.yVelocity -= SPEED_OF_GRAVITY; ...... I'm totally clueless - how should this be solved? The rendering part is solved with a simple prediction method. With the delta system I could see my object be smoothly rendered to the screen, but with this interpolation/prediction method the object just appear sticky for one second and then it's gone. The core of this game loop is actually from here deWiTTERS Game Loop, where I trying to implement the last solution he describes. Shortly - my physics are in a mess and this need to be solved. • How to stop Cairo Dock minimizing Conky on Show Desktop?

  Every time I use Cairo Dock Show Desktop add-on Conky minimizes: I've read about the own_window_type override option on .conkyrc and it seems to work for some people but it doesn't work for me. Conky won't show up if I use this option (it is currently set to own_window_type normal). • Fix Firefox Not Scrolling with Up/Down Arrow Keys or Home/End Keys

  If you’ve encountered a problem where your Firefox installation no longer scrolls when you use the up or down arrow keys, and even the Home or End keys don’t work anymore, there’s an easy fix. When this problem happens, you’ll notice that moving the arrow keys around just moves the cursor around the page. Annoying! The problem is because you tripped the Caret Browsing feature at some point, and accidentally hit Yes. To fix this, you can just hit the F7 key again. Or, if you want to do it the about:config way, filter by accessibility.browsewithcaret and make sure it’s set to false. Remember, you can double-click on any boolean value to toggle between true and false. • Why does display:table-cell not center content without display:table?

  I'm looking for the most efficient (or elegant) way to vertically and horizontally center content of variable height. I've come up with this: http://cssdeck.com/t/2veysdkg/16, which uses css tables to vertically center the main content. My demands for writing this particular piece of code were: Must be able to center variable and fixed width content vertically and horizontally Centered content must be inside the normal document flow (so no overlapping) Sticky footer and normal header of 100% width As few hacks, ugly code or non-semantic html as possible I didn't care about support for IE6, IE7 (I'll use a different stylesheet for them) The weird thing is that the demands above are only met when the header and footer are set to table-row, and the body-tag to display:table. Which is weird because as I understand it the css will generate anonymous table elements when parent table elements are missing. So table-cell should work without all the surrounding elements, but yet I've not been able to make it work. If it were up to me I would prefer to not mess with the display mode for the body tag, and leave the header and footer on display:block. But I've not been able to make it work. Does anyone understand why this doesn't work?

• Black screen after grub kernal selection menu

  I have an Acer eMachines e727 with Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics (drivers updated to latest). I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi. All is well until I select the kernal (first one on the list). My display goes black. I searched for solutions and found one on Unbuntu forum which partially helped. Following that sticky post, I pressed "e" at the kernal listings. I changed the $Linux... default line to "quiet splash nomodeset" and was able to get to the login screen and desktop. I edited grub to make the nomodeset permanent (also removed the vt command as recommended). I followed through with changing grub to match the graphics as recommended in the article using the grub cli (using info from vbeinfo). I updated grub with the recommended settings but still get the black screen after selecting the kernal. Only nomodeset works to get me to the login and desktop. Once I get to the desktop, my display resolution shows being set to 1024x768 but it actually looks like 800x680. What do I need to do to get past these issues? Thanks!

• Running Non-profit Web Applications on Cloud/Dedicated Hosting [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I often times build web applications purely because I enjoy it. I like building useful tools or open source applications that don't come with a price tag. That being said, many of these applications can be quite complex requiring services beyond shared hosting (ex. specific PHP extensions). This leaves me with two options: Make the web application less complex and run on shared hosting. Fork out money for cloud or dedicated/VPS hosting. Considering the application is free (I don't make money off of it intentionally), the money for hosting comes out of my own pocket. I know I am not alone in this sticky situation. So the question is, what are the hosting options that provide more advanced features such as shell access via SSH, ability to install specific software/extensions (ex. if I wish to use a NoSQL DB such as Redis, MongoDB, or Cassandra), etc., at a free or low price point? I know free usually equates to bad/unreliable hosting -- but it's not always the case. There are a couple providers with free plans I know of: Amazon EC2 - Free micro-instance for 1 year AppHarbor - Cloud based .NET web application hosting w/ free plan. What else is available for hosting of non-profit applications?

• The PATRIOT Act and how it relates to the Internet

  The subject of the Internet and anonymity is a very sticky situation for me because I primarily develop web applications for a living.  As a part of my job I have to track users as they enter, navigate and leave specific applications. The level of tracking depends on where the user goes within a website.  The basic information that I capture includes the user’s IP address, browser type, operating system, the date/time they entered the site and the URL from which the user was referred to the website. In addition to the custom logging that is placed on the website, web servers also have methods of logging built-in as well. Web server logging allows companies to have a central repository to store all user activity across the entire server. Not to mention that they can also create a central repository that allows multiple servers to store log files in one location. This allows users to be tracked across multiple servers as they browse website located on a specific collection of servers that host multiple websites. All this being said there are methods to attempt to protect your privacy by using proxy servers and increasing your browser security levels, but that will only limit the amount of logging not eliminate it. I have to agree with Traynor when he states that the PATRIOT Act eviscerates the constitutional protections of anonymous communication on the Internet. Therefore, given the recent passage and implementation of the PATRIOT Act, the constitutional guarantees of the right to anonymity have been severely compromised. I think that the PATRIOT Act is a direct violation of our first amendment rights because it allows for the government to directly monitor any and all activity on the internet including communications, usage, and transactions that can occur.  This opens the door to scrutiny and persecution of individuals who are not in line with the government’s beliefs and actions. If England had this type of monitoring capabilities during the revolutionary war, I believe it would have been almost impossible to succeed from England.

• TotalPhase Aardvark driver's GPL license

  I'm using an SPI host adapter for a project. The Aardvark from TotalPhase. And I did something crazy, I read that EULA license that everyone just clicks through. The driver installation license includes these bits: This driver installer package also includes a WIN32 driver that is entirely based on the libusb-win32 project (release 0.1.10.1). ... LICENSE: The software in this package is distributed under the following licenses: Driver: GNU General Public License (GPL) Library, Test Files: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) Now, my understanding of of the GPL is that it's sticky and viral. If you include software then the whole project has to be released under the GPL (if you distribute it, you can do whatever you want with in-house projects). If the driver was like the library, and was licensed under the LGPL, it could be used by my closed source proprietary project, as long as it's source and license was passed along with it. But it's not, it's pure GPL. If I include this driver in my project and distribute it, am I required to release my project under the GPL?

  As a programmer who work in a company whose vision is to make paperless office possible, is there any way I can work effectively while using less paper? I can list at least several kinds of papers I use quite often: Paper notebook, on which I do most of the pre-coding design work and ideas Books Temporary printouts of source code, though not so often (in color, with a 6 point font at 600 DPI) Sticky note, to remind myself of things that should be taken care of within a few days On the other hand, I also use a wiki and an office text editor. Once a while I would use a diagramming software to make a few flowcharts. Deeper questions: Is there a relationship between paper use and productivity? How can programmers help save the trees? Is paperless software development fundamentally different from paperless office? Related questions: Do you ever write code with pen and paper, and should we do it more often? What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? What things are essential on a programmer's desk? • tkinter frame does not show on startup

  this is my first question on SO, so correct me please if I make a fool of myself. I have this fairly complicated python / Tkinter application (python 2.7). On startup, the __init__ loads several frames, and loads a database. When that is finished, I want to set the application to a default state (there are 2 program states, 'calculate' and 'config'). Setting the state of the application means that the appropriate frame is displayed (using grid). When the program is running, the user can select a program state in the menu. Problem is, the frame is not displayed on startup. I get an empty application (menu bar and status bar are displayed). When I select a program state in the menu, the frame displays as it should. Question: What am I doing wrong? Should I update idletasks? I tried, but no result. Anything else? UPDATE the sample code in the comments (thanks for that!) pointed me in another direction. Further testing revealed (what I think) the cause of the problem. Disabling the display of the status bar made the program work as expected. Turns out, I used pack to display the statusbar and grid to display the frames. And they are in the same container, so problems arise. I fixed that by using only pack inside the main container. But the same problem is still there. This is what I use for the statusbar: self.status = GUI_helper.StatusBar(self.parent) self.status.pack(side=tk.BOTTOM, fill=tk.X) And if I comment out the last line (pack), the config frame loads on startup, as per this line: self.set_program_state("config") But if I let the status bar pack inside the main window, the config frame does not show. Where it does show when the user asks for it (with the same command as above).

• Setting up a shared media drive

  I want to have a shared media drive be transparently usable to all users, whilst also sticking to FHS and Ubuntu standards. The former takes priority if necessary. I currently mount it at /media/Stuff but /media is supposed to be for external media, I believe. The main issue is setting permissions so that access to read and write to the drive can be granted to multiple users working within the same directories. InstallingANewHardDrive seems both slightly confused and not what I want. It claims that this sets ownership for the top-level directory (despite the recursion flag): sudo chown -R USERNAME:USERNAME /media/mynewdrive And that this will let multiple users create files and sub-directories but only delete their own: sudo chgrp plugdev /media/mynewdrive sudo chmod g+w /media/mynewdrive sudo chmod +t /media/mynewdrive However, the group writeable bit does not seem to get inherited, which is troublesome for keeping things organised (prevents creation inside sub-folders originally made by another user). The sticky bit is probably also unwanted for the same reason, although currently it seems that one userA (perhaps the owner of the mount-point?) can delete the userB's files, but not vice-versa. This is fine, as long as userB can create files inside the directory of userA. So: What is the correct mount point? Is plugdev the correct group? Most importantly, how to set up permissions to maintain an organised media drive? I do not want to be running cron jobs to set permissions regularly!

• How can one-handed work in Ubuntu be eased?

  My right hand is temporarily immobilized and I would like to do some minor general work on my computer. Mostly web browsing, mailing and file and directory browsing and editing. For this I currently use Firefox, Thunderbird, Nautilus and the GNOME terminal (I have already asked a specific question about Emacs). Are there ways to ease such, or any other general, one-handed work in Ubuntu? I have found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391805/how-can-i-remain-productive-with-one-hand-completely-immobilized but that is not exactly what I am asking for. I want to ease whatever little time spent one-handed in Ubuntu and this is also interesting for situations where there is no injury involved, such as when one hand is occupied. I do realize I should avoid unnecessary strain. The main thing that is much slower one-handed is writing. Since I am only temporarily immobilized it seems to make no sense learn a new keyboard layout. I would be surprised if I managed to learn and become more effective with a new keyboard layout (than one-handed QWERTY) before I can use my other hand again. What I have already found: Sticky keys for making it easier to enter keyboard commands. When writing one-handed there are more cases of where it is useful to paste in phrases rather than to reenter them. It is easier to use Super+S rather than CtrlAlt+arrow keys to switch work space.

• SQLAuthority News – SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience

  I recently attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. I have only one expression for the event - Best Summit Ever This year the summit was at its best. Instead of writing about my usual routine or the event, I am going to write about the interesting things I did and how I felt about it! Best Summit Ever Trip to Seattle! This was my second trip to Seattle this year and the journey is always long. Here is the travel stats on how long it takes to get to Seattle: 24 hours official air time 36 hours total travel time (connection waits and airport commute) Every time I travel to USA I gain a day and when I travel back to home, I lose a day. However, the total traveling time is around 3 days. The journey is long and very exhausting. However, it is all worth it when you’re attending an event like SQLPASS. Here are few things I carry when I travel for a long journey: Dry Snack packs – I like to have some good Indian Dry Snacks along with me in my backpack so I can have my own snack when I want Amazon Kindle – Loaded with 80+ books A physical book – This is usually a very easy to read book I do not watch movies on the plane and usually spend my time reading something quick and easy. If I can go to sleep, I go for it. I prefer to not to spend time in conversation with the guy sitting next to me because usually I end up listening to their biography, which I cannot blog about. Sheraton Seattle SQLPASS In any case, I love to go to Seattle as the city is great and has everything a brilliant metropolis has to offer. The new Light Train is extremely convenient, and I can take it directly from the airport to the city center. My hotel, the Sheraton, was only few meters (in the USA people count in blocks – 3 blocks) away from the train station. This time I saved USD 40 each round trip due to the Light Train. Sessions I attended! Well, I really wanted to attend most of the sessions but there was great dilemma of which ones to choose. There were many, many sessions to be attended and at any given time there was more than one good session being presented. I had decided to attend sessions in area performance tuning and I attended quite a few sessions this year, compared to what I was able to do last year. Here are few names of the speakers whose sessions I attended (please note, following great speakers are not listed in any order. I loved them and I enjoyed their sessions): Conor Cunningham Rushabh Mehta Buck Woody Brent Ozar Jonathan Kehayias Chris Leonard Bob Ward Grant Fritchey I had great fun attending their sessions. The sessions were meaningful and enlightening. It is hard to rate any session but I have found that the insights learned in Conor Cunningham’s sessions are the highlight of the PASS Summit. Rushabh Mehta at Keynote SQLPASS   Bucky Woody and Brent Ozar I always like the sessions where the speaker is much closer to the audience and has real world experience. I think speakers who have worked in the real world deliver the best content and most useful information. Sessions I did not like! Indeed there were few sessions I did not like it and I am not going to name them here. However, there were strong reasons I did not like their sessions, and here is why: Sessions were all theory and had no real world connections. All technical questions ended with confusing answers (lots of “I will get back to you on it,” “it depends,” “let us take this offline” and many more…) “I am God” kind of attitude in the speakers For example, I attended a session of one very well known speaker who is a specialist for one particular area. I was bit late for the session and was surprised to see that in a room that could hold 350 people there were only 30 attendees. After sitting there for 15 minutes, I realized why lots of people left. Very soon I found I preferred to stare out the window instead of listening to that particular speaker. One on One Talk! Many times people ask me what I really like about PASS. I always say the experience of meeting SQL legends and spending time with them one on one and LEARNING! Here is the quick list of the people I met during this event and spent more than 30 minutes with each of them talking about various subjects: Pinal Dave and Brad Shulz Pinal Dave and Rushabh Mehta Michael Coles and Pinal Dave Rushabh Mehta – It is always pleasure to meet with him. He is a man with lots of energy and a passion for community. He recently told me that he really wanted to turn PASS into resource for learning for every SQL Server Developer and Administrator in the world. I had great in-depth discussion regarding how a single person can contribute to a community. Michael Coles – I consider him my best friend. It is always fun to meet him. He is funny and very knowledgeable. I think there are very few people who are as expert as he is in encryption and spatial databases. Worth meeting him every single time. Glenn Berry – A real friend of everybody. He is very a simple person and very true to his heart. I think there is not a single person in whole community who does not like him. He is a friends of all and everybody likes him very much. I once again had time to sit with him and learn so much from him. As he is known as Dr. DMV, I can be his nurse in the area of DMV. Brad Schulz – I always wanted to meet him but never got chance until today. I had great time meeting him in person and we have spent considerable amount of time together discussing various T-SQL tricks and tips. I do not know where he comes up with all the different ideas but I enjoy reading his blog and sharing his wisdom with me. Jonathan Kehayias – He is drill sergeant in US army. If you get the impression that he is a giant with very strong personality – you are wrong. He is very kind and soft spoken DBA with strong performance tuning skills. I asked him how he has kept his two jobs separate and I got very good answer – just work hard and have passion for what you do. I attended his sessions and his presentation style is very unique.  I feel like he is speaking in a language I understand. Louis Davidson – I had never had a chance to sit with him and talk about technology before. He has so much wisdom and he is very kind. During the dinner, I had talked with him for long time and without hesitation he started to draw a schema for me on the menu. It was a wonderful experience to learn from a master at the dinner table. He explained to me the real and practical differences between third normal form and forth normal form. Honestly I did not know earlier, but now I do. Erland Sommarskog – This man needs no introduction, he is very well known and very clear in conveying his ideas. I learned a lot from him during the course of year. Every time I meet him, I learn something new and this time was no exception. Joe Webb – Joey is all about community and people, we had interesting conversation about community, MVP and how one can be helpful to community without losing passion for long time. It is always pleasant to talk to him and of course, I had fun time. Ross Mistry – I call him my brother many times because he indeed looks like my cousin. He provided me lots of insight of how one can write book and how he keeps his books simple to appeal to all the readers. A wonderful person and great friend. Ola Hallgren - I did not know he was coming to the summit. I had great time meeting him and had a wonderful conversation with him regarding his scripts and future community activities. Blythe Morrow – She used to be integrated part of SQL Server Community and PASS HQ. It was wonderful to meet her again and re-connect. She is wonderful person and I had a great time talking to her. Solid Quality Mentors – It is difficult to decide who to mention here. Instead of writing all the names, I am going to include a photo of our meeting. I had great fun meeting various members of our global branches. This year I was sitting with my Spanish speaking friends and had great fun as Javier Loria from Solid Quality translated lots of things for me. Party, Party and Parties Every evening there were various parties. I did attend almost all of them. Every party had different theme but the goal of all the parties the same – networking. NDA – Not Decided Agenda During the event there were few meetings marked “NDA.” Someone asked me “why are these things NDA?”  My response was simple: because they are not sure themselves. NDA stands for Not Decided Agenda. Toys, Giveaways and Luggage I admit, I was like child in Gameworks and was playing to win soft toys. I was doing it for my daughter. I must thank all of the people who gave me their cards to try my luck. I won 4 soft-toys for my daughter and it was fun. Also, thanks to Angel who did a final toy swap with me to get the desired toy for my daughter. I also collected ducks from Idera, as my daughter really loves them. Solid Quality Booth Each of the exhibitors was giving away something and I got so much stuff that my luggage got quite a bit bigger when I returned. Best Exhibitor Idera had SQLDoctor (a real magician and fun guy) to promote their new tool SQLDoctor. I really had a great time participating in the magic myself. At one point, the magician made my watch disappear.  I have seen better magic before, but this time it caught me unexpectedly and I was taken by surprise. I won many ducks again. The Common Question I heard the following common questions: I have seen you somewhere – who are you? – I am Pinal Dave. I did not know that Pinal is your first name and Dave is your last name, how do you pronounce your last name again? – Da-way How old are you? – I am as old as I can be. So did you really fly from India? – Yes, because I have seasickness so I do not prefer the sea journey. • How to Load Oracle Tables From Hadoop Tutorial (Part 5 - Leveraging Parallelism in OSCH)

In this post we are going to talk about how to make it work for big data loads. We will explain how to optimize an OSCH external table for load, paying particular attention to Oracle’s DOP (degree of parallelism), the number of external table location files we use, and the number of HDFS files that make up the payload. We will provide some rules that serve as best practices when using OSCH. The assumption is that you have read the previous post and have some end to end OSCH external tables working and now you want to ramp up the size of the loads. Using OSCH External Tables for Access and Loading OSCH external tables are no different from any other Oracle external tables.  They can be used to access HDFS content using Oracle SQL: SELECT * FROM my_hdfs_external_table; or use the same SQL access to load a table in Oracle. INSERT INTO my_oracle_table SELECT * FROM my_hdfs_external_table; To speed up the load time, you will want to control the degree of parallelism (i.e. DOP) and add two SQL hints. ALTER SESSION FORCE PARALLEL DML PARALLEL  8; ALTER SESSION FORCE PARALLEL QUERY PARALLEL 8; INSERT /*+ append pq_distribute(my_oracle_table, none) */ INTO my_oracle_table SELECT * FROM my_hdfs_external_table; There are various ways of either hinting at what level of DOP you want to use.  The ALTER SESSION statements above force the issue assuming you (the user of the session) are allowed to assert the DOP (more on that in the next section).  Alternatively you could embed additional parallel hints directly into the INSERT and SELECT clause respectively. /*+ parallel(my_oracle_table,8) *//*+ parallel(my_hdfs_external_table,8) */ Note that the "append" hint lets you load a target table by reserving space above a given "high watermark" in storage and uses Direct Path load.  In other doesn't try to fill blocks that are already allocated and partially filled. It uses unallocated blocks.  It is an optimized way of loading a table without incurring the typical resource overhead associated with run-of-the-mill inserts.  The "pq_distribute" hint in this context unifies the INSERT and SELECT operators to make data flow during a load more efficient. Finally your target Oracle table should be defined with "NOLOGGING" and "PARALLEL" attributes.   The combination of the "NOLOGGING" and use of the "append" hint disables REDO logging, and its overhead.  The "PARALLEL" clause tells Oracle to try to use parallel execution when operating on the target table. Determine Your DOP It might feel natural to build your datasets in Hadoop, then afterwards figure out how to tune the OSCH external table definition, but you should start backwards. You should focus on Oracle database, specifically the DOP you want to use when loading (or accessing) HDFS content using external tables. The DOP in Oracle controls how many PQ slaves are launched in parallel when executing an external table. Typically the DOP is something you want to Oracle to control transparently, but for loading content from Hadoop with OSCH, it's something that you will want to control. Oracle computes the maximum DOP that can be used by an Oracle user. The maximum value that can be assigned is an integer value typically equal to the number of CPUs on your Oracle instances, times the number of cores per CPU, times the number of Oracle instances. For example, suppose you have a RAC environment with 2 Oracle instances. And suppose that each system has 2 CPUs with 32 cores. The maximum DOP would be 128 (i.e. 2*2*32). In point of fact if you are running on a production system, the maximum DOP you are allowed to use will be restricted by the Oracle DBA. This is because using a system maximum DOP can subsume all system resources on Oracle and starve anything else that is executing. Obviously on a production system where resources need to be shared 24x7, this can’t be allowed to happen. The use cases for being able to run OSCH with a maximum DOP are when you have exclusive access to all the resources on an Oracle system. This can be in situations when your are first seeding tables in a new Oracle database, or there is a time where normal activity in the production database can be safely taken off-line for a few hours to free up resources for a big incremental load. Using OSCH on high end machines (specifically Oracle Exadata and Oracle BDA cabled with Infiniband), this mode of operation can load up to 15TB per hour. The bottom line is that you should first figure out what DOP you will be allowed to run with by talking to the DBAs who manage the production system. You then use that number to derive the number of location files, and (optionally) the number of HDFS data files that you want to generate, assuming that is flexible. Rule 1: Find out the maximum DOP you will be allowed to use with OSCH on the target Oracle system Determining the Number of Location Files Let’s assume that the DBA told you that your maximum DOP was 8. You want the number of location files in your external table to be big enough to utilize all 8 PQ slaves, and you want them to represent equally balanced workloads. Remember location files in OSCH are metadata lists of HDFS files and are created using OSCH’s External Table tool. They also represent the workload size given to an individual Oracle PQ slave (i.e. a PQ slave is given one location file to process at a time, and only it will process the contents of the location file.) Rule 2: The size of the workload of a single location file (and the PQ slave that processes it) is the sum of the content size of the HDFS files it lists For example, if a location file lists 5 HDFS files which are each 100GB in size, the workload size for that location file is 500GB. The number of location files that you generate is something you control by providing a number as input to OSCH’s External Table tool. Rule 3: The number of location files chosen should be a small multiple of the DOP Each location file represents one workload for one PQ slave. So the goal is to keep all slaves busy and try to give them equivalent workloads. Obviously if you run with a DOP of 8 but have 5 location files, only five PQ slaves will have something to do and the other three will have nothing to do and will quietly exit. If you run with 9 location files, then the PQ slaves will pick up the first 8 location files, and assuming they have equal work loads, will finish up about the same time. But the first PQ slave to finish its job will then be rescheduled to process the ninth location file, potentially doubling the end to end processing time. So for this DOP using 8, 16, or 32 location files would be a good idea. Determining the Number of HDFS Files Let’s start with the next rule and then explain it: Rule 4: The number of HDFS files should try to be a multiple of the number of location files and try to be relatively the same size In our running example, the DOP is 8. This means that the number of location files should be a small multiple of 8. Remember that each location file represents a list of unique HDFS files to load, and that the sum of the files listed in each location file is a workload for one Oracle PQ slave. The OSCH External Table tool will look in an HDFS directory for a set of HDFS files to load.  It will generate N number of location files (where N is the value you gave to the tool). It will then try to divvy up the HDFS files and do its best to make sure the workload across location files is as balanced as possible. (The tool uses a greedy algorithm that grabs the biggest HDFS file and delegates it to a particular location file. It then looks for the next biggest file and puts in some other location file, and so on). The tools ability to balance is reduced if HDFS file sizes are grossly out of balance or are too few. For example suppose my DOP is 8 and the number of location files is 8. Suppose I have only 8 HDFS files, where one file is 900GB and the others are 100GB. When the tool tries to balance the load it will be forced to put the singleton 900GB into one location file, and put each of the 100GB files in the 7 remaining location files. The load balance skew is 9 to 1. One PQ slave will be working overtime, while the slacker PQ slaves are off enjoying happy hour. If however the total payload (1600 GB) were broken up into smaller HDFS files, the OSCH External Table tool would have an easier time generating a list where each workload for each location file is relatively the same.  Applying Rule 4 above to our DOP of 8, we could divide the workload into160 files that were approximately 10 GB in size.  For this scenario the OSCH External Table tool would populate each location file with 20 HDFS file references, and all location files would have similar workloads (approximately 200GB per location file.) As a rule, when the OSCH External Table tool has to deal with more and smaller files it will be able to create more balanced loads. How small should HDFS files get? Not so small that the HDFS open and close file overhead starts having a substantial impact. For our performance test system (Exadata/BDA with Infiniband), I compared three OSCH loads of 1 TiB. One load had 128 HDFS files living in 64 location files where each HDFS file was about 8GB. I then did the same load with 12800 files where each HDFS file was about 80MB size. The end to end load time was virtually the same. However when I got ridiculously small (i.e. 128000 files at about 8MB per file), it started to make an impact and slow down the load time. What happens if you break rules 3 or 4 above? Nothing draconian, everything will still function. You just won’t be taking full advantage of the generous DOP that was allocated to you by your friendly DBA. The key point of the rules articulated above is this: if you know that HDFS content is ultimately going to be loaded into Oracle using OSCH, it makes sense to chop them up into the right number of files roughly the same size, derived from the DOP that you expect to use for loading. Next Steps So far we have talked about OLH and OSCH as alternative models for loading. That’s not quite the whole story. They can be used together in a way that provides for more efficient OSCH loads and allows one to be more flexible about scheduling on a Hadoop cluster and an Oracle Database to perform load operations. The next lesson will talk about Oracle Data Pump files generated by OLH, and loaded using OSCH.   Are there any decent examples of the following available: Looking through the WIF SDK, there are examples of using WIF in conjunction with ASP.NET using the WSFederationAuthenticationModule (FAM) to redirect to an ASP.NET site thin skin on top of a Security Token Service (STS) that user uses to authenticate (via supplying a username and password). If I understand WIF and claims-based access correctly, I would like my application to provide its own login screen where users provide their username and password and let this delegate to an STS for authentication, sending the login details to an endpoint via a security standard (WS-*), and expecting a SAML token to be returned. Ideally, the SessionAuthenticationModule would work as per the examples using FAM in conjunction with SessionAuthenticationModule i.e. be responsible for reconstructing the IClaimsPrincipal from the session security chunked cookie and redirecting to my application login page when the security session expires. Is what I describe possible using FAM and SessionAuthenticationModule with appropriate web.config settings, or do I need to think about writing a HttpModule myself to handle this? Alternatively, is redirecting to a thin web site STS where users log in the de facto approach in a passive requestor scenario?

• PHP File Upload second file does not upload, first file does without error

  So I have a script I have been using and it generally works well with multiple files... When I upload a very large file in a multiple file upload, only the first file is uploaded. I am not seeing an errors as to why. I figure this is related to a timeout setting but can not figure it out - Any ideas?
