  • Must-see sessions at TCUK11

    - by Roger Hart
Technical Communication UK is probably the best professional conference I've been to. Last year, I spoke there on content strategy, and this year I'll be co-hosting a workshop on embedded user assistance. Obviously, I'd love people to come along to that; but there are some other sessions I'd like to flag up for anybody thinking of attending. Tuesday 20th Sept - workshops This will be my first year at the pre-conference workshop day, and I'm massively glad that our workshop hasn't been scheduled along-side the one I'm really interested in. My picks: It looks like you're embedding user assistance. Would you like help? My colleague Dom and I are presenting this one. It's our paen to Clippy, to the brilliant idea he represented, and the crashing failure he was. Less precociously, we'll be teaching embedded user assistance, Red Gate style. Statistics without maths: acquiring, visualising and interpreting your data This doesn't need to do anything apart from what it says on the tin in order to be gold dust. But given the speakers, I suspect it will. A data-informed approach is a great asset to technical communications, so I'd recommend this session to anybody event faintly interested. The speakers here have a great track record of giving practical, accessible introductions to big topics. Go along. Wednesday 21st Sept - day one There's no real need to recommend the keynote for a conference, but I will just point out that this year it's Google's Patrick Hofmann. That's cool. You know what else is cool: Focus on the user, the rest follows An intro to modelling customer experience. This is a really exciting area for tech comms, and potentially touches on one of my personal hobby-horses: the convergence of technical communication and marketing. It's all part of delivering customer experience, and knowing what your users need lets you help them, sell to them, and delight them. Content strategy year 1: a tale from the trenches It's often been observed that content strategy is great at banging its own drum, but not so hot on compelling case studies. Here you go, folks. This is the presentation I'm most excited about so far. On a mission to communicate! Skype help their users communicate, but how do they communicate with them? I guess we'll find out. Then there's the stuff that I'm not too excited by, but you might just be. The standards geeks and agile freaks can get together in a presentation on the forthcoming ISO standards for agile authoring. Plus, there's a session on VBA for tech comms. I do have one gripe about day 1. The other big UK tech comms conference, UA Europe, have - I think - netted the more interesting presentation from Ellis Pratt. While I have no doubt that his TCUK case study on producing risk assessments will be useful, I'd far rather go to his talk on game theory for tech comms. Hopefully UA Europe will record it. Thursday 22nd Sept - day two Day two has a couple of slots yet to be confirmed. The rumour is that one of them will be the brilliant "Questions and rants" session from last year. I hope so. It's not ranting, but I'll be going to: RTFMobile: beyond stating the obvious Ultan O'Broin is an engaging speaker with a lot to say, and mobile is one of the most interesting and challenging new areas for tech comms. Even if this weren't a research-based presentation from a company with buckets of technology experience, I'd be going. It is, and you should too. Pattern recognition for technical communicators One of the best things about TCUK is the tendency to include sessions that tackle the theoretical and bring them towards the practical. Kai and Chris delivered cracking and well-received talks last year, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they've got for us on some of the conceptual underpinning of technical communication. Developing an interactive non-text learning programme Annoyingly, this clashes with Pattern Recognition, so I hope at least one of the streams is recorded again this year. The idea of communicating complex information without words us fascinating and this sounds like a great example of this year's third stream: "anything but text". For the localization and DITA crowds, there's rich pickings on day two, though I'm not sure how many of those sessions I'm interested in. In the 13:00 - 13:40 slot, there's an interesting clash between Linda Urban on re-use and training content, and a piece on minimalism I'm sorely tempted by. That's my pick of #TCUK11. I'll be doing a round-up blog after the event, and probably talking a bit more about it beforehand. I'm also reliably assured that there are still plenty of tickets.

  • Highlights from the Oracle Customer Experience Summit @ OpenWorld

    - by Kathryn Perry
A guest post by David Vap, Group Vice President, Oracle Applications Product Development The Oracle Customer Experience Summit was the first-ever event covering the full breadth of Oracle's CX portfolio -- Marketing, Sales, Commerce, and Service. The purpose of the Summit was to articulate the customer experience imperative and to showcase the suite of Oracle products that can help our customers create the best possible customer experience. This topic has always been a very important one, but now that there are so many alternative companies to do business with and because people have such public ways to voice their displeasure, it's necessary for vendors to have multiple listening posts in place to gauge consumer sentiment. They need to know what is going on in real time and be able to react quickly to turn negative situations into positive ones. Those can then be shared in a social manner to enhance the brand and turn the customer into a repeat customer. The Summit was focused on Oracle's portfolio of products and entirely dedicated to customers who are committed to building great customer experiences within their businesses. Rather than DBAs, the attendees were business people looking to collaborate with other like-minded experts and find out how Oracle can help in terms of technology, best practices, and expertise. The event was at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco as part of Oracle OpenWorld. We had eight hundred people attend, which was great for the first year. Next year, there's no doubt in my mind, we can raise that number to 5,000. Alignment and Logic Oracle's Customer Experience portfolio is made up of a combination of acquired and organic products owned by many people who are new to Oracle. We include homegrown Fusion CRM, as well as RightNow, Inquira, OPA, Vitrue, ATG, Endeca, and many others. The attendees knew of the acquisitions, so naturally they wanted to see how the products all fit together and hear the logic behind the portfolio. To tell them about our alignment, we needed to be aligned. To accomplish that, a cross functional team at Oracle agreed on the messaging so that every single Oracle presenter could cover the big picture before going deep into a product or topic. Talking about the full suite of products in one session produced overflow value for other products. And even though this internal coordination was a huge effort, everyone saw the value for our customers and for our long-term cooperation and success. Keynotes, Workshops, and Tents of Innovation We scored by having Seth Godin as our keynote speaker ? always provocative and popular. The opening keynote was a session orchestrated by Mark Hurd, Anthony Lye, and me. Mark set the stage by giving real-world examples of bad customer experiences, Anthony clearly articulated the business imperative for addressing these experiences, and I brought it all to life by taking the audience around the Customer Lifecycle and showing demos and videos, with partners included at each of the stops around the lifecycle. Brian Curran, a VP for RightNow Product Strategy, presented a session that was in high demand called The Economics of Customer Experience. People loved hearing how to build a business case and justify the cost of building a better customer experience. John Kembel, another VP for RightNow Product Strategy, held a workshop that customers raved about. It was based on the journey mapping methodology he created, which is a way to talk to customers about where they want to make improvements to their customers' experiences. He divided the audience into groups led by facilitators. Each person had the opportunity to engage with experts and peers and construct some real takeaways. From left to right: Brian Curran, John Kembel, Seth Godin, and George Kembel The conference hotel was across from Union Square so we used that space to set up Innovation Tents. During the day we served lunch in the tents and partners showed their different innovative ideas. It was very interesting to see all the technologies and advancements. It also gave people a place to mix and mingle and to think about the fringe of where we could all take these ideas. Product Portfolio Plus Thought Leadership Of course there is always room for improvement, but the feedback on the format of the conference was positive. Ninety percent of the sessions had either a partner or a customer teamed with an Oracle presenter. The presentations weren't dry, one-way information dumps, but more interactive. I just followed up with a CEO who attended the conference with his Head of Marketing. He told me that they are using John Kembel's journey mapping methodology across the organization to pull people together. This sort of thought leadership in these highly competitive areas gives Oracle permission to engage around the technology. We have to differentiate ourselves and it's harder to do on the product side because everyone looks the same on paper. But on thought leadership ? we can, and did, take some really big steps. • Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

    - by APNW
    I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this? Thanks Here's the installation log: Start-Date: 2013-11-07 12:01:28 Upgrade: chromium-browser-l10n:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), libswscale2:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), chromium-codecs-ffmpeg:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), chromium-browser:i386 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.12.04.1, 30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3), libpostproc52:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavcodec-extra-53:i386 (0.8.6ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavformat53:i386 (0.8.6-0ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8-0ubuntu0.12.04.1), libavutil-extra-51:i386 (0.8.6ubuntu0.12.04.1, 0.8.8ubuntu0.12.04.1) End-Date: 2013-11-07 12:02:00 Start-Date: 2013-11-07 17:32:55 Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.136' Install: libmusicbrainz5-0:i386 (5.0.1-2~precise2), udisks2:i386 (1.98.0-1~precise1), libclutter-gst-1.0-0:i386 (1.5.4-0ubuntu2), libudisks2-0:i386 (1.98.0-1~precise1), cinnamon-session-common:i386 (2.0.4-20131105043005-precise), librhythmbox-core6:i386 (2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gcr:i386 (3.4.1-3~precise1), libcluttergesture-0.0.2-0:i386 (0.0.2.1-2ubuntu3), libmx-1.0-2:i386 (1.4.3-0ubuntu1), guile-2.0-libs:i386 (2.0.5+1-1), libclutter-imcontext-0.1-0:i386 (0.1.4-2build1), libnatpmp1:i386 (20110808-3ubuntu1) Upgrade: gnome-keyring:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-4ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon:i386 (2.0.6-20131026040307-precise, 2.0.10-20131105040309-precise), gir1.2-muffin-3.0:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), gir1.2-totem-1.0:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), nemo:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), aisleriot:i386 (3.2.3.2-0ubuntu1, 3.4.1-1~precise1), procps:i386 (3.2.8-11ubuntu6.2, 3.2.8-11ubuntu6.3), libcinnamon-desktop0:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), libgck-1-0:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-3~precise1), totem-plugins:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-desktop-data:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), rhythmbox:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), libgcr-3-1:i386 (3.2.2-2ubuntu4.1, 3.4.1-3~precise1), seahorse:i386 (3.2.2-0ubuntu2.1, 3.4.1-2~precise1), muffin-common:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), totem-common:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), libtotem0:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-data:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gir1.2-cinnamondesktop-3.0:i386 (2.0.2-20131025011504-precise, 2.0.3-20131105011505-precise), cinnamon-session:i386 (2.0.1-20131021043004-precise, 2.0.4-20131105043005-precise), rhythmbox-mozilla:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-plugin-zeitgeist:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), libmuffin0:i386 (2.0.3-20131023003029-precise, 2.0.3-20131105003012-precise), cjs:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020602-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020703-precise), rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-common:i386 (2.0.6-20131026040307-precise, 2.0.10-20131105040309-precise), gnome-disk-utility:i386 (3.0.2-2ubuntu7, 3.4.1-0ubuntu1~precise1), nemo-fileroller:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020004-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020003-precise), libnemo-extension1:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), rhythmbox-plugins:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), gimp:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), cinnamon-settings-daemon:i386 (2.0.5-20131026004504-precise, 2.0.6-20131105004505-precise), libgimp2.0:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), gir1.2-rb-3.0:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), wpasupplicant:i386 (0.7.3-6ubuntu2.1, 0.7.3-6ubuntu2.2), libcjs0c:i386 (2.0.0-20131021020602-precise, 2.0.0-20131105020703-precise), nemo-data:i386 (2.0.2-20131023010018-precise, 2.0.5-20131105010007-precise), totem:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), gimp-data:i386 (2.8.6-0precise1~ppa, 2.8.8-0precise0~ppa), transmission-common:i386 (2.51-0ubuntu1.3, 2.73-0ubuntu1~precise1), cinnamon-translations:i386 (2.0.1-20131021040407-precise, 2.0.1-20131105040807-precise), totem-mozilla:i386 (3.0.1-0ubuntu21.1, 3.4.3-0ubuntu1~precise1), rhythmbox-plugin-magnatune:i386 (2.96-0ubuntu4.3, 2.97-1ubuntu1~precise1), transmission-gtk:i386 (2.51-0ubuntu1.3, 2.73-0ubuntu1~precise1) End-Date: 2013-11-07 17:34:40

  • Data Source Security Part 4

    - by Steve Felts
So far, I have covered Client Identity and Oracle Proxy Session features, with WLS or database credentials.  This article will cover one more feature, Identify-based pooling.  Then, there is one more topic to cover - how these options play with transactions.Identity-based Connection Pooling An identity based pool creates a heterogeneous pool of connections.  This allows applications to use a JDBC connection with a specific DBMS credential by pooling physical connections with different DBMS credentials.  The DBMS credential is based on either the WebLogic user mapped to a database user or the database user directly, based on the “use database credentials” setting as described earlier. Using this feature enabled with “use database credentials” enabled seems to be what is proposed in the JDBC standard, basically a heterogeneous pool with users specified by getConnection(user, password). The allocation of connections is more complex if Enable Identity Based Connection Pooling attribute is enabled on the data source.  When an application requests a database connection, the WebLogic Server instance selects an existing physical connection or creates a new physical connection with requested DBMS identity. The following section provides information on how heterogeneous connections are created:1. At connection pool initialization, the physical JDBC connections based on the configured or default “initial capacity” are created with the configured default DBMS credential of the data source.2. An application tries to get a connection from a data source.3a. If “use database credentials” is not enabled, the user specified in getConnection is mapped to a DBMS credential, as described earlier.  If the credential map doesn’t have a matching user, the default DBMS credential is used from the datasource descriptor.3b. If “use database credentials” is enabled, the user and password specified in getConnection are used directly.4. The connection pool is searched for a connection with a matching DBMS credential.5. If a match is found, the connection is reserved and returned to the application.6. If no match is found, a connection is created or reused based on the maximum capacity of the pool: - If the maximum capacity has not been reached, a new connection is created with the DBMS credential, reserved, and returned to the application.- If the pool has reached maximum capacity, based on the least recently used (LRU) algorithm, a physical connection is selected from the pool and destroyed. A new connection is created with the DBMS credential, reserved, and returned to the application. It should be clear that finding a matching connection is more expensive than a homogeneous pool.  Destroying a connection and getting a new one is very expensive.  If you can use a normal homogeneous pool or one of the light-weight options (client identity or an Oracle proxy connection), those should be used instead of identity based pooling. Regardless of how physical connections are created, each physical connection in the pool has its own DBMS credential information maintained by the pool. Once a physical connection is reserved by the pool, it does not change its DBMS credential even if the current thread changes its WebLogic user credential and continues to use the same connection. To configure this feature, select Enable Identity Based Connection Pooling.  See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24329_01/apirefs.1211/e24401/taskhelp/jdbc/jdbc_datasources/EnableIdentityBasedConnectionPooling.html  "Enable identity-based connection pooling for a JDBC data source" in Oracle WebLogic Server Administration Console Help. You must make the following changes to use Logging Last Resource (LLR) transaction optimization with Identity-based Pooling to get around the problem that multiple users will be accessing the associated transaction table.- You must configure a custom schema for LLR using a fully qualified LLR table name. All LLR connections will then use the named schema rather than the default schema when accessing the LLR transaction table.  - Use database specific administration tools to grant permission to access the named LLR table to all users that could access this table via a global transaction. By default, the LLR table is created during boot by the user configured for the connection in the data source. In most cases, the database will only allow access to this user and not allow access to mapped users. Connections within Transactions Now that we have covered the behavior of all of these various options, it’s time to discuss the exception to all of the rules.  When you get a connection within a transaction, it is associated with the transaction context on a particular WLS instance. When getting a connection with a data source configured with non-XA LLR or 1PC (using the JTS driver) with global transactions, the first connection obtained within the transaction is returned on subsequent connection requests regardless of the values of username/password specified and independent of the associated proxy user session, if any. The connection must be shared among all users of the connection when using LLR or 1PC. For XA data sources, the first connection obtained within the global transaction is returned on subsequent connection requests within the application server, regardless of the values of username/password specified and independent of the associated proxy user session, if any.  The connection must be shared among all users of the connection within a global transaction within the application server/JVM.

  • Load balanced asp.net websites and required memory usage

    - by Matt
Each of my servers has 8Gb RAM and the memory usage hovers around 7Gb. I have a load balancer available to me but at the moment I'm worried that putting my sites through it will cause the platform to fall over. The load balancer would be configured with a sticky round-robin where a new connection is round robin but subsequent connections for the same source ip will remain on the same server (until a limit is reached). Thats all standard stuff. How do I know what memory usage my sites will need across the platform when I put them through the load balancer? Rather than knowing that a site is using 150mb on a particular server I could face a situation where the 150mb is taken up on each of the servers. I know that with only 1 gb free I could have a serious problem on my hands. If I free up some memory then how can I work out what I need to have free to prevent this from happening? Thanks Matt

  • rm failing inside cron script

    - by Nicholas
I have a cron job calling a bash script which runs fine, except for one line inside it that is suppose to remove all fines in a directory. The result of this line is always 'no such file or directory' even though I have verified (many times) that there are files in that directory. The line in question is as simply: rm /dir1/dir2/dir3/* The script works fine when run manually in the terminal, so it must be something about how the cron is run. I've tried giving 'dir3' and all the files inside it every permission possible, so it shouldn't be a permission problem. (The directory and files are also owned by the user). I've tried specifing 'SHELL=/bin/bash' inside 'crontab'. There is no sticky bit set and there is no alias on the rm command. Interestingly changing the 'rm' command to 'ls' gives the same negative result (unless you remove the trailing '*', and then that works). What am I missing here?

  • Predictive vs Least Connection Load Balancing Techniques

    - by Mani
I have a windows based desktop application that communicates via TCP to the application servers. (windows 2003). No sticky sessions between client calls. We have exactly 2 servers to load balance and we are thinking to use a F5 hardware NLB. The application is a heavy load types, doing not much bussiness logic in the services but retrieving quite a big amount of data at most of the times. May be on an average 5000 to 10000 records at all times. Used mainly for storing and retirieving data and no special processing of data or calculations running on the server side. I am favouring 'predictive' considering my services take a while at times to return data and hence tracking the feedback would yield some better routing as in predictive. I am not sure if the given data is sufficient enough to suggest some ideas but considering these, what would be some suggestions\things to consider\best between Predictive and Least Connections ? Thanks.

  • left shift "stuck " on Windows 7

    - by yoshco
I'm having a hard time with a "stuck" left shift key. my sister complained she is getting symbols instead of numbers using her netbook. after some time I fired up the on screen keyboard (winr+r"osk") and to my surprise, the left shift key was in some kind of toggle mode. since then I'm trying to inject registry keys to disable accessibility futures like stickykeys etc. to no avail. tough luck all http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/Windows-vista/disable-the-irritating-sticky-filter-keys-popup-dialogs/ check box are disabled What's going on? How can I fix this? Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1.

  • What linux permissions are need for www?

    - by Xeoncross
I know that 777 is full read/write/execute permission for owner/group/other. So this doesn't seem to be needed as it leaves random users full permissions. What permissions are need to be used on /var/www so that... Source control like git or svn Normal users in a group like "websites" or added to "www-data" Servers like apache or lighthttpd And PHP/Perl/Ruby can all read, create, and run files there? If I'm correct, Ruby and PHP scripts are not "executed" directly - but passed to an interpreter. So there is no need for execute permission on files in /var/www. Therefore, it seems like the correct permission would be chmod -R 1660 which would make all files shareable by these four entities all files non-executable by mistake block everyone else from the directory entirely set the permission mode to "sticky" for all future files Is this correct? Update: I just realized that files and directories might need different permissions - I was talking about files above so i'm not sure what the directory permissions would need to be.

  • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

    - by user1202747
I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

  • Is it possible to add your own bookmarks/tabs to a PDF file?

    - by Pure.Krome
Hi folks, I've purchases a few e-books and love it. Some come with a massive list of bookmarks (kewl!) and some not. Regardless, is there a way i can create my OWN bookmarks so i can jump to specific pages? I don't want to mess up the current list of official bookmarks that came with the e-books (where they were provided). It's like i want to add my own sticky note tabs so i can quickly jump between pages etc, without having to remember the page number. Also, this is for Adobe reader (the free thingy). If it's available in another program (eg. Foxit, please say so also :) ) cheers!

  • IBM PS/2 Keyboard with OS X 10.6 and PS2->USB Converter

    - by public static void
Just got a new Mac Pro at work and as I can't stand the ZX Spectrum-esque 'dead flies' feel of the new Apple keyboards, I brought my trusty IBM SpaceSaver II to the office (with a USB/PS2 adapter) All seems generally to work ok - even the Trackpoint 'nipple' but periodically the modifier keys, notably the Ctrl and Windows keys seem to go into 'sticky' mode so that typing an 'S' brings up the save dialog, 'O' = open dialog etc. etc. Its generally fixed by switching windows and then returning back to the offending one, but this is really beginning to cheese me off. Can anyone suggest a fix?

Then it became sturdy and could be torn apart, less sticky and flexible which i video'ed here. Can this item be restored back to fully functioning state as it was before? Maybe it just became dry and i should put it in a place with moisture? Since all was in Chinese, i also do not know the storage conditions that must be met.

  • some keyboard keys not working properly

    - by surfmadpig
I'm using Windows 7. All of a sudden, a couple of hours ago, this happened: My keyboard number keys [above the letters] stopped working properly, both as numbers and as symbols. Only 5 and 6 are functional. Also, I've noticed that the End key isn't working either, and perhaps a couple more from that group. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with those evil Sticky Keys/Filter Keys/ whatever those ease of access things are, BUT I've turned off all the ease of access keyboard options and nothing has changed. Is it possible that something is still turned on while I unchecked it? Are the on/off checkboxes to control WHEN it happens or IF it happens? I also tried rebooting and uninstalling/reinstalling keyboard from device manager, to no avail. It's certainly a software issue and not a hardware issue, as I've tried another keyboard and the problem persists. And, predictably enough, it's annoying. Any ideas?

But when a user create a file/folder, the Write attribute is not defined for the group, disabling other to write it/on it. How can I define the Umask to add the Write value for groups in the specific directory and it's subfolders ? I tried to find some help before, but I only saw helps for Fedora/CentOs, and I'm using Debian Squeeze. Thanks for your help

  • Can you boot/install/restore a MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air USB stick?

    - by zekel
The new MacBook Airs don't have optical drives, so you can't install or restore the OS via DVD. They include a little USB stick for this purpose. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Does anyone know if it will work with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking about removing my optical drive to put in another HD. The only sticky situation I might get into is if I need to do an install or restore on the road without an external DVD drive. • Unix file permission for groups

    - by GOPI
I am working on HP Unix server. I have a directory in which users from different groups need to create files. And the users of a same group should have complete access to the files created by their group and only read access for the files created by other groups. I tried to set sticky bit for the directory thereby to restrict access for other groups. But I face the following problem. Created File1 from user1 of GroupA. When I tried to execute the 'rm' command from user2 of the same group GroupA, it doesn't allow as user2 is not the owner of the file. can setgid (at directory level) or other command help me to sort this issue?

  • Http Hanlder must be reset with each deployment. How can I add this functionality to the web.config

    - by user42942
My application is a dotnet 4 hybrid - MVC in some areas, web forms in others. This application was recently upgraded to dotnet 4 and includes a lot of older code and some mismatched parts. Unfortunately it includes a telerik component that requires me to run the Application pool in classic mode. In order to fix this (in IIS7) I have to add a handler mapping to the IIS configuration. This mapping is basically a wildcard mapping that points the wildcard path "*" to the %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll. The problem I am running into is this: For some reason this mapping gets dropped when deploying the site. So, can I add the functionality of this mapping to the web config? If so, How? Or is there another solution to make this manually added mapping "sticky" so that it remains in place during and after a deployment? (I am also asking this on StackOverflow, as I'm not sure if this should be a coding question or a Server question)

  • Spacebar on Samsung Series 7 Chronos Not Working

    - by Samg
The spacebar on my Series 7 Chronos does not register half the time. I'll be typing along and my words end up lookinglikethis. After further investigation, I noticed the spacebar does not response when pressed at the edges. Basically, the areas under the "C" key and the "M" key do not respond to a press It's weird, the bar physically "clicks" down (like it should), but does not register. No matter how hard I press, It won't register in that area. I noticed some complaints online about a 'sticky' or 'loose' spacebar, but they didn't mention it not registering. We took it back to the store we bought it at and they noticed the same problem on the floor model. Does anyone know how to fix this?
