• Can I build or test a computer without a case?

  I am in the process of building a really nice new PC right now. It's going to have a nice Lian Li case with the internals powder coated black and all the wires will be sleeved. So my problem is I am getting parts in a couple days but my case will not be completed for about a month because it is on back order plus time to powder coat it. I am purchasing many of m y parts from newegg.com and they claim you must return any dead parts within 30 days or the invoice for there warranty to replace bad parts. So is it possible for me to set up the PC without a case just to test that the main parts are working correctly within the timeframe I am allowed? If this is possible, how do I deal with turning the system on/off without a powere button? Or is therer one on a motherboard? Thanks for any tips/advice

• Lost contact with my NAS after changing its IP

  I did some brain-dead reconfiguring of my D-Link DNS-323 NAS some days ago. I have a home network where each computer gets a dynamically allocated IP address starting at 192.168.1.100. The irritating point (for me at least) was that the NAS changed IP if the power went down or I turned off the router. I then had to remap a drive-letter to point to the new IP address of the NAS. To remedy that I configured the NAS to have a static IP, 192.168.0.10. I had no good reason to choose that IP, other than I found it in a user manual for the NAS. After I changed the IP and rebooted the NAS it disappeared from the network and was never to be found again. Now I have a black brick standing in my home, looking good, but "dead". Could anyone point me in a direction which helps me solve this problem? I have about 100gb worth of pic of my children on this brick so I really want it back :-) Sincerely,

• External monitor image not centered in the screen

  I'm using Xorg 7.5 on a Radeon HD4870 with the FOSS radeonhd server on my HP 6830s. The laptop has a VGA connector and I attach it to a 37" panasonic plasma TV. It works fine except for a little annoyance: when activated, the TV screen is set to the resolution of 1360x768 (which it reports as being the highest it supports) but all the image is shifted by about 100 pixels to the right. I can't see the leftmost part of the page, and I have a black vertical bar to the right. If I change the resolution to 1024x768 there is no shifting, the image fills the entire screen with no parts hidden, but at this resolution the image is stretched. How can I tune the position on the external monitor so that the image is centered in the screen filling it entirely?

• Server side form validation and POST data

  Hi, I have a user input form here: http://www.7bks.com/create (Google login required) When you first create a list you are asked to create a public username. Unfortuantely currently there is no constraint to make this unique. I'm working on the code to enforce unique usernames at the moment and would like to know the best way to do it. Tech details: appengine, python, webapp framework What I'm planning is something like this: first the /create form posts the data to /inputlist/ (this is the same as currently happens) /inputlist/ queries the datastore for the given username. If it already exists then redirect back to /create display the /create page with all the info previously but with an additional error message of "this username is already taken" My question is: Is this the best way of handling server side validation? What's the best way of storing the list details while I verify and modify the username? As I see it I have 3 options to store the list details but I'm not sure which is "best": Store the list details in the session cookie (I am using GAEsessions for cookies) Define a separate POST class for /create and post the list data back from /inputlist/ to the /create page (currently /create only has a GET class) Store the list in the datastore, even though the username is non-unique. Thank you very much for your help :) I'm pretty new to python and coding in general so if I've missed something obvious my apologies. Tom PS - I'm sure I can eventually figure it out but I can't find any documentation on POSTing data using the webapp appengine framework which I'd need in order to do solution 2 above :s maybe you could point me in the right direction for that too? • Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • Does Windows 7 support multiple simultaneous nVidia graphics cards with different drivers?

  On one of my dev machines at work (currently running XP), I have two nVidia graphics cards: Quadro NVS 440 (my original card, for my three primary monitors) GeForce GTX 275 (just added, for CUDA development) I can get both cards to work OK by installing the latest GeForce drivers, but I get some annoying-but-not-crippling display artifacts on the Quadro's screens (mostly scattered black rectanges where repainting fails for a few bits of UI in certain applications). Under XP, this seems to be the best I can do. I can use Device Manager to supposedly install different nVidia drivers for the two cards (the latest Quadro drivers for the NVS, the latest GeForce drivers for the GTX), but I actually end up with the same driver for both, because the driver dlls all have the same names and get installed on top of one another in the system directory. I have read that Win7 has a new video driver architecture that better supports multiple heterogeneous cards. Does anyone know if that will handle my scenario? If so, it will give me a compelling reason to get that machine on Win7 ASAP.

• Screen resolution of monitor is wrong every time I turn the computer on?

  Hi, Im just wondering if there is a solution to my weird problem. Every time I turn on my PC the viewport isn't aligned correctly on the screen - there is always a black strip on the right hand side. This is not a big issue as it can be resolved by pressing the menu button on the screen and doing a factory reset. However it is irritating having to do it every time. The weird thing it never used to happen before with the tower Im using. Is potentially out of date drivers a problem? Thanks.

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • How to find out if the screen is WLED or RGBLED on Dell Studio XPS 16?

  I just ordered the Dell Studio XPS 16 with i7 and 16" RGBLED screen. This upgrade from WLED LCD to RGBLED LCD charged me more $$. But now when I view the order online, it lists this part as "320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam". When called Dell, the rep says this part is RGBLED screen and the "premium" is for RGBLED. I want to make sure they are shipping me the RGBLED screen and not the WLED. Is there any way to verify this after I receive (either from Device Manager or BIOS or somewhere in system settings)? Also, is there any published specifications / criteria that we can run (some third party software) on this monitor which can tell if this is WLED or RGBLED?

• Hyper-V Guests suddenly stopped working

  Hi! Here's my configuration: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard as a host OS, and two guests VMs running the same exact OS. Yesterday, Trial Activation on all OSes has expired and quite naturally all machines shut down. I rearmed the host, but cannot log on to either guest VMs. From what I see, they start up normally (State is listed as Running) but CPU Usage seems to be stuck at 3% and when I connect to it all I see is black textmode screen with cursor blinking. One of my VMs has several snapshots, and when I revert back, it starts up normally. Moreover, "reference VM" (the one I cloned these two VMs from) starts up just normally. How can I troubleshoot this issue?

• How can I force Windows 7 to REindex a folder?

  I asked Windows 7 to index my entire "Media" folder. After it was done it'd find anything in there, no problem. Then I reorganized it a bit and moved some folders around, and now it doesn't find things inside those folders anymore. For example, I'm looking at a folder with the files: 01. Ferry Corsten - Shelter Me.mp3 02. Ferry Corsten - Black Velvet.mp3 ... 05. Ferry Corsten - Made Of Love.mp3 ... I type in "Love" in the search box for the current folder, and it doesn't find anything. I checked in "Indexing Options", and this very folder is checked off in there. It seems I just messed up its indexing feature. Any ideas how fix?

• Debian: video problems with VLC

  I have a problem playing AVI divx files with VLC. Yesterday upon start VLC showed an error message complaining about divx codecs and refused to proceed. Today the player starts but the video is squashed horizontally (it occupies roughly 1/4th of the VLC window which is for the other part black). I'm on an updated testing system, and before yesterday VLC was playing fine. In the meantime - after a recent dist-upgrade - I cannot run X with proprietary ATI drivers anymore, I have to use the FOSS radeonhd ones instead. I don't know if that's related but I thought it could be worth mentioning (and by the way if anyone has suggestions about this problem too, that'd be very much appreciated). How can I fix VLC's problem?

• Windows program to remove titlebar, frame, etc from a window?

  I like playing computer games in windowed mode, as opposed to full screen. I don't like staring at the title bar, frame, and other UI junk. I also don't like seeing other stuff on my desktop around the window. Is there a simple Windows program that will strip the UI chrome off of an arbitrary window from some other application? Extra points for an easy way to put a black screen underneath the window, hiding the desktop. Note: I'm looking specifically to handle windows that are smaller than my desktop size. There's a variety of 'windowed maximized' options that make a window exactly the desktop size, and positioned so all the UI decorations are off screen. (E.g.: ShiftWindow). I'm trying to strip all the decorations away from a window that's smaller than desktop size.

• Does anyone have documentation on SHGetSysColor?

  I'm trying to find any reference for this function, but I haven't found anything. All I have is an obscure KB from Microsoft referencing that a programmer made boo-boo when coding a part of the Windows Mobile 6 where he should call SHGetSysColor but instead he called GetSysColor that gives a complete different color, for the same spec. From what I could gather the GetSysColor read a color value in the registry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color\SHColor or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color\DefSHColor and returns the color according to the index. What I can't get a fix on is what each index mean, as I have 41 different colors in there. Googling for SHGetSysColor in gives me only 7 matches, two of them are the KB from Microsoft (one in English, the other in French) one is from a Russian site (which I don't read), yet another two are from the freepascal.org and one from Koders.com that is describing the commctl.def file. I went to the commctl.h trying to see if I could find reference tom this function, and found absolutely nothing. No search on MSDN, either fro Google, Bing, or the default MSDN search gave me any result. So, does anyone know what indexes are we talking about here?

• Mozilla Thunderbird new emails indication colour

  I've recently upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird to v3 on Winodws XP. In v2 I think when new (Pop 3) emails were downloaded, there were a little star icon next to my local folders where it's filtered to as to indicate new emails. In v3, it seems they've changed it to use different colour to highlight the folder instead. Whereas folders with existing unread emails are highlighted in bold black, folders with new unread emails are highlighted in this light grey greenish colour that's really hard to see. Can anyone please tell me how to modify the colour? I'm guessing it's either some lines in a userChrome.css file, or modifying a field in the config editor. Thanks. :)

• Windows XP not able to boot after loading isapnp.sys driver

  Hi When i power on my DELL Latitude E6400 laptop running on Windows XP SP3, i get a black screen and hangs after that. So I tried to boot through safe mode which hangs after loading the driver isapnp.sys. Doing a bit of googling i found out Windows XP not booting up including safe mode So I loaded my XP boot cd and tried Recovery Console. In the Recovery console, doing "dir" gives the error "an error occurred during directory enumeration". Then i tried chkdsk /p /r which gave "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" How can i fix these please. Thanks in advance.

  Given a date range how to calculate the number of weekends partially or wholly within that range? (A few definitions as requested: take 'weekend' to mean Saturday and Sunday. The date range is inclusive i.e. the end date is part of the range 'wholly or partially' means that any part of the weekend falling within the date range means the whole weekend is counted.) To simplify I imagine you only actually need to know the duration and what day of the week the initial day is... I darn well now it's going to involve doing integer division by 7 and some logic to add 1 depending on the remainder but I can't quite work out what... extra points for answers in Python ;-) Edit Here's my final code. Weekends are Friday and Saturday (as we are counting nights stayed) and days are 0-indexed starting from Monday. I used onebyone's algorithm and Tom's code layout. We've also done a 3D animation version of it, which we found to be nowhere near as useful as the Styrofoam balls. There's something about a physical, conspicuous structure hanging from the ceiling right in the middle of a development project that's regularly updated to provide not only the structure of the system that you're building, but also the current status of each one of the classes. We've done it on 19 projects the last time I've counted. One of them was 1,856 classes, which is big - actually, probably bigger than it should be. It was a big commercial project, so it needed to be somewhat big. Masterminds of Programming It is the first time I've read or heard about using styrofoam balls to model classes. Is that a commonly used technique? And, how does that sort of modeling help us to design better the system? If you have any photos to share which can show us how the classes are represented it'd be great!

• Blender Render Cycles

  I get a very poor Render in cycles. Not just minor problems, but just a cloud of of black and white dots and no contour at all. I read a lot about this now and couldn't get it to work. Does anybody know how to get the settings right. Or better what do I have to pay attention to get better renders. I also tried external renderer like Lux, which increased my CPU usage to 98 % (just the default cube and clicking on Lux and load materials). Is this normal and what could i do to improve that. I have various versions of Blender (2.61,2.62,2.63) on Mac OS X. Thanks for the time.

If I already have the GNOME Desktop installed, why doesn't it start? How can I check from command line that I have GNOME installled? This virtual machine does not have internet connection, that's why I want to install the GNOME Desktop from DVD.

• Capture documents in bitonal, or grayscale then downsample

  I'm about to embark on a document archival process. I'm going to spend a lot of good money to archive some paper (actually microfiche) to TIFF images. I have a choice of 300-dpi bitonal (2-bit, black/white) or 300-dpi grayscale (8-bit). Cost is the same for either format. Data volume (and thus image size) is not a factor. It seems to me that the grayscale, since scanned at the same resolution as the bitonal, would always contain more information and could always be downsampled to the equivalent bitonal image. Are there any downsides to selecting grayscale, and then later downsampling to bitonal if desired? In other words, is it possible that the scanning software will perform a more accurate (or more legible) representation than a grayscale image converted to bitonal?

Any tips?
