  • Dosbox USB print Windows 8.1 64Bit

    Worked fine until I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 as well as made the mail programm working (had to get a windows live ID and have to type in a password now, when starting Windows). I did set the USB printer to lpt1 on the local Windows 8 computer and another XP computer via LAN to lpt2 the same way with the same printer on the Windows 8 computer. But now it doesn't work anymore from the Win8 one (where the printer is plugged via USB). Tried already deleting lpt2: on the XP one, as well as lpt1 on the Windows 8, resetted it. Not working... :-( I tried also net use lpt1: \server\printer password "\user:Ute Berger" /persistent:yes of course with the correct server and shared printer name as well as net use \server\printer "\user:Ute Berger" password /persistent:yes . This is the name displayed as a user now. But in C:\users it is named Benutzer1. Tried this one also. Nothing worked. What could be the problem here? What's strange is that when I type "net use lpt1:" on the XP, I get another error (67 - The networkname wasn't found) than trying something I didn't set up like lpt2 (2 - The system can't find the file). Could this be a possible problem as even if deleted something is left blocking on the Windows 8 computer? Please help me - I tried for hours today but all I've got was frustration... Regards Tim

  • How To Delete Built-in Windows 7 Power Plans (and Why You Probably Shouldn’t)

    Do you actually use the Windows 7 power management features? If so, have you ever wanted to just delete one of the built-in power plans? Here’s how you can do so, and why you probably should leave it alone. Just in case you’re new to the party, we’re talking about the power plans that you see when you click on the battery/plug icon in the system tray. The problem is that one of the built-in plans always shows up there, even if you only use custom plans. When you go to “More power options” on the menu there, you’ll be taken to a list of them, but you’ll be unable to get rid of any of the built-in ones, even if you have your own. You can actually delete the power plans, but it will probably cause problems, so we highly recommend against it. If you still want to proceed, keep reading. Delete Built-in Power Plans in Windows 7 Open up an Administrator mod command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt and choosing “Run as Administrator”, then type in the following command, which will show you a whole list of the plans. powercfg list Do you see that really long GUID code in the middle of each listing? That’s what we’re going to need for the next step. To make it easier, we’ll provide the codes here, just in case you don’t know how to copy to the clipboard from the command prompt. Power Scheme GUID: 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e  (Balanced) Power Scheme GUID: 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c  (High performance)Power Scheme GUID: a1841308-3541-4fab-bc81-f71556f20b4a  (Power saver) Before you do any deleting, what you’re going to want to do is export the plan to a file using the –export parameter. For some unknown reason, I used the .xml extension when I did this, though the file isn’t in XML format. Moving on… here’s the syntax of the command: powercfg –export balanced.xml 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e This will export the Balanced plan to the file balanced.xml. And now, we can delete the plan by using the –delete parameter, and the same GUID.  powercfg –delete 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e If you want to import the plan again, you can use the -import parameter, though it has one weirdness—you have to specify the full path to the file, like this: powercfg –import c:\balanced.xml Using what you’ve learned, you can export each of the plans to a file, and then delete the ones you want to delete. Why Shouldn’t You Do This? Very simple. Stuff will break. On my test machine, for example, I removed all of the built-in plans, and then imported them all back in, but I’m still getting this error anytime I try to access the panel to choose what the power buttons do: There’s a lot more error messages, but I’m not going to waste your time with all of them. So if you want to delete the plans, do so at your own peril. At least you’ve been warned!     Many people feel they have to set up a full Azure subscription online to try out and develop on Windows Azure. But you don’t have to do that right away. In fact, you can download the Windows Azure Compute Emulator – a “cloud development environment” – right on your desktop. No, it’s not for production use, and no, you won’t have other people using your system as a cloud provider, and yes, there are some differences with Production Windows Azure, but you’ll be able code, run, test, diagnose, watch, change and configure code without having any connection to the Internet at all. The best thing about this approach is that when you are ready to deploy the code you’ve been testing, a few clicks deploys it to your subscription when you make one.   So what deep-magic does it take to run such a thing right on your laptop or even a Virtual PC? Well, it’s actually not all that difficult. You simply download and install the Windows Azure SDK (you can even get a free version of Visual Studio for it to run on – you’re welcome) from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsazure/cc974146.aspx   This SDK will also install the Windows Azure Compute Emulator and the Windows Azure Storage Emulator – and then you’re all set.   • Improve Playback Using Enhancements in Windows Media Player 12

    Are you looking for ways to improve the playback of your media in Windows Media Player 12? We’ll show you how to do that by using the enhancements in WMP 12. If you are in Library mode, you’ll need to click the icon at the lower right to switch to Now Playing mode. Right-click anywhere in Media Player while in Now Playing mode, select Enhancements, and select any of the available options.   You can switch between the individual enhancements by clicking the right and left buttons at the top left.   Crossfading and Auto Volume Leveling The Auto Volume Leveling setting is just a simple toggle on and off. If your MP3 or WMA files have volume leveling information values.   You can automatically add volume leveling information values to all files you add to your library by switching to Library view, going to Tools > Options, and selecting Add volume leveling information values for new files on the Library tab. Click OK when finished.   Crossfading will gradually decrease the volume of the song that is ending (fade out) and increase volume of the song that is beginning. Click Turn on Crossfading and then click and drag the slider left or right change the amount of overlap between tracks. Graphic Equalizer The graphic equalizer is toggled on and off by clicking Turn on / Turn off at the top left. You can select pre-defined equalizer settings by music genre by clicking the Default list. The radio buttons on the left allow you to move the sliders individually, in a loose group or a tight group. You can always return to the default settings by clicking Reset. Play Speed Settings Choose a pre-defined settings by clicking Slow, Normal, or Fast. Uncheck the Snap slider to common speeds the move the slider right and left to your desired speed. If nothing else, these settings provide a little fun and amusement. Quiet Mode Quiet mode will level out any sharp volume highs and lows within a single track. Simply toggle the setting on or off and select whether you prefer Medium difference or Little difference by selecting one of the radio buttons. SRS WOW effects SRS WOW effects enhance low-frequency and stereo sound performance. Click Turn on to enable the TruBass and WOW Effect sliders. You can also optimize for your speaker type. Click to switch between Regular, Large, and Headphones. Video Settings Video Settings allow you to adjust the Hue, Brightness, Saturation, and Contrast.   You can also adjust the zoom settings by clicking Select video zoom settings.   Dolby Digital Settings Choose between Normal, Night, and Theater settings to adjust the audio for Dolby Digital content.     I'm trying to add the RRAS VPN roles into my server 2012 box. The error I am getting is: install-windowsfeature : The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed.     Hi all, My system is Vista Business 32 bits SP2. When I click "Windows update", I can see there are 2 available optional updates. If I click the link "2 optional updates are available" to see what the updates are, I get: http://leodip.s3.amazonaws.com/windows%5Fupdate2.PNG The details about the updates are EMPTY. Any idea why this is happening? It doesn't happen only with optional updates, but with critical updates as well. I would like to fix this, so I can see what the updates are. Thanks!

    I am in the administrators group for my local Windows XP machine and I would like to get updates via http://update.microsoft.com/[1]. However, this is prevented via the group policy: Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to get updates for your computer. Is there anyway to override this specific policy for my machine or my user? [1] Several installed applications are Microsoft based, but are not part of the machine standard (eg Visual studio). As such, I am not getting the updates for these applications. I could periodically go to the various application sites and look for hotfixes, but that is beyond tedious.

  • Unexpected server restart - Windows 2003 SP2 fully patched

    I'm having problems with a server that has been restarting itself randomly for the past 3 months. The server is windows 2003 with SP2 Domain Controller and it is fully patched. I have seen the following errors in event log: Source: USER32 Category: None Type: Information Event ID: 1074 User: Domain\Administrator The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of computer (server name) on behalf of user domainname\Administrator for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found Reason Code: 0x840000ff Shutdown Type: restart I have ran out of ideas as to what might be causing this issue. The system is clean and not infected. There are no scheduled tasks responsible for the restart either. I'm considering moving the backup (Backup Exec 12.5) to a different server but I'm almost certain that this is not the issue as the restart times vary and do not match the scheduled backup jobs. Any suggestions to help me resolve this issue would be appreciated, thanks.

    Hello, I have a Dell server wired into the router. I was able to connect to it with my laptop (laptop is wireless) before my router died. My verizon router went kaput, and I got everything else back up and running on the wireless network other than the remoting in feature, even though I can access the server through windows explorer just fine. Any ideas why? What do I need to check? UPDATE: Interesting scenario, Network Discovery is off; I turn it on and save, but for some reason, even after that, network discovery is turning itself off... no idea why that is happening? Thanks.

    Hi there. When I install Windows Vista/7, I move some of my user folders onto a new partition (i.e. Documents, Musics, Pictures, etc.). This does not include moving the whole User directory, just some of the data folders. %AppData% remains in it's default location (%SystemDrive%\Users). I'm getting tired of manually moving each of these folder's by changing their location under the properties dialog. Does anyone know of a way that I can script this to apply to the folders that I wish?

  • Windows 7 won't recognize backup set can I script extracting the files in some other way?

    The Windows 7 Backup/Restore created multiple backup sets and I was able to restore the oldest version, but not the most recent, which is not seen by the application. I do see all of the zip files and there are hundreds in later versions. Is there a way to extract each of these correctly outside of the regular restoration method? Perhaps scripting an extract of each day one after another? further clarifying The backup files were all made to an external drive. The original computer died completely, power supply, drives everything. I am trying to reconstruct as much as possible and the only backup set recognized is 6 months older. This was recovered over a new install, but unzipping thousands of zip files is not really a simple unzip copy project as the original paths are not a simple thing to reconstruct.

  • Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

    Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says "Turn Off with Installing Updates" (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") Now, when I do normal shutdown asking it to Install Updates and Turn it Off. It does not install the updates and every subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still comes with the prompt "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that this install was this "Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... " Now, when I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and Install it. It tries to install and it fails. Now, why is this install alone failing? Second, if we are not able to ascertain why this is failing, can we at least ensure that it is removed from the list of possible installs so that everytime it does not ask me to install it.

The hard was used in raid, with several hards from the same fabric packaging box (close id's). The hard drives were placed identically. Rapid means almost linear grow from 300 to 1700 in 6-7 hours. Maximal temperature was 41C. (thanks to munin's smart monitoring)

  • Windows Server 2008 repair logonui.exe

    I'm fairly certain some data on my server got corrupted and from a dialog box that popped up I think one of the things that got corrupted is logonui.exe I think this because while the server goes through BIOS and the windows loading splash screen, when it finished that it goes to a black screen with just a mouse cursor that I can move around. But most of the services come back up, for example: DNS, DHCP, DFS, and the print service all load up while it's sitting on the black screen. Is there anything I can do to repair the logon screen? Maybe copy a file off another copy of Server 2008, get something off the original media (which I have) or bring the system back to a previous restore point? Thanks! I'm in the weeds right now...

  • Need some help trying to rip a CD using Windows Media Player on XP

    Hi folks, i'm trying to rip a CD using Windows Media Player 11 on XP ... and the destination folder is in the ALBUM NAME. Now, i can't see HOW it can rip to a new folder, named after the album. As far as I can tell, it's named by the Artist Name .. which sorta sucks for me. So, is there a way I can rip a CD with WMP11 that puts the songs into a new/existing folder which is the name of the Album? cheers :)

  • Always a path to the internet even in Windows SBS is off

    Hello all, is it possible to have a configuration in a Windows 2003 SBS environment where in the event that the SBS box crashed/turned off/ or is being worked on that there can still exist a path to the internet for domain users and visitors to still use? I would like to have the standalone router issue DHCP IPs. The primary DNS would point to the SBS, the secondary wouuld point to the ISP DNS Server. My theory was that if someone was using the internet and the SBS box went down they wouldn't be able to access the network shares but still be able to use the internet. (We are moving everything into the clouds with Google Apps Non-Profit) Does this seem like a reasonable configuration? Or are they're pitfalls that I will fall into? Thanks Mark

  • How to queue up Windows 8 file coping to only have one copying at a time

    The new windows 8 file explorer copying is great. I can setup multiple copying tasks. They appear in a single window and I am able to pause them. Is there a way to have the copying only occur one at a time and when complete to progress the next one? Currently I have to setup the file copy and pause subsequent ones, then unpause the next one when I notice the current one finishes. I am only asking about a way to queue the file explorer coping and not use alternative tools like robocopy.

  • How can I troubleshoot Windows Media Player being unable to play videos?

    I have a Windows Media Player installation which is behaving strangely. I know I have the correct codecs installed for a piece of video, because it is Windows Media Video because the Zune software plays it just fine this is a recent problem; this type of video played just fine a week ago, but I have been unable to isolate the change that borked things (and I have System Restore disabled because the space on this SSD is cramped as it is) When I try to view any video in Windows Media Player, the video does not play, and I just get this: and none of the media buttons have any effect. I have already tried the following: Uninstalling and reinstalling the KLite Codec Pack Uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Media Player via "Add or Remove Windows Features" Removing and allowing WMP to rebuild it's media library by erasing the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Media directory. sfc /scannow How can I troubleshoot this problem?

  • Wi-Fi performance in Windows 8 RP on a MacBook Air (mid 2011)

    I was able to install the Boot Camp Windows software using the executable that it provided, and there are no unrecognized or unknown devices in Device Manager. Wi-Fi works but it seems to be limited to an extremely slow 1.5Mbits. Network Center reports an 802.11n connection (at 65Mbps usually) but transfers never reach above about 200kB/s. Being limited to 1/20th of the connection speed of my internet service is quite frustrating. Does anybody experience the same issue? I have been trying to identify the Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset and a driver that I could try to upgrade to but I have made very little progress on Google on this front.

Now, I want to change the port number 80 to some other number How to change it ? in how many files does it needs to be changed ? dose it require to restart the system to change to take effect ? Note: I have changed port number in C:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf in two places where it says Listen 80 and ServerName localhost:80 Pls help, thanks.
