The Inbox sits at the following location /home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/Inbox /home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/Movies The system is a Netgear Stora NAS box that I have root access to. The /home/ folder is mounted as an smb share on various computers around the house. The folder /Inbox cannot be opened on any of those machines (they all connect as 'admin'). When I ssh into the box using the 'admin' credentials I am also unable to access the folder. The folder was created via a Web Admin page hosted on the NAS. The user/group for the Inbox folder was previously apache:www (expected as this folder was created by the web application), but I chmod/chowned the folder as the root user in an attempt to grant the admin user (therefore the rest of the connected machines) access to the files. Sorry for not including this earlier, I wasn't sure if it was relevant and didn't want to confuse the situation. -Thanks 3rd Edit Sorry again - It looks like this NAS is running some custom version of Red Hat, not Debian as previously stated - I'm not sure if this makes a difference

• Unusually high dentry cache usage

  Problem A CentOS machine with kernel 2.6.32 and 128 GB physical RAM ran into trouble a few days ago. The responsible system administrator tells me that the PHP-FPM application was not responding to requests in a timely manner anymore due to swapping, and having seen in free that almost no memory was left, he chose to reboot the machine. I know that free memory can be a confusing concept on Linux and a reboot perhaps was the wrong thing to do. However, the mentioned administrator blames the PHP application (which I am responsible for) and refuses to investigate further. What I could find out on my own is this: Before the restart, the free memory (incl. buffers and cache) was only a couple of hundred MB. Before the restart, /proc/meminfo reported a Slab memory usage of around 90 GB (yes, GB). After the restart, the free memory was 119 GB, going down to around 100 GB within an hour, as the PHP-FPM workers (about 600 of them) were coming back to life, each of them showing between 30 and 40 MB in the RES column in top (which has been this way for months and is perfectly reasonable given the nature of the PHP application). There is nothing else in the process list that consumes an unusual or noteworthy amount of RAM. After the restart, Slab memory was around 300 MB If have been monitoring the system ever since, and most notably the Slab memory is increasing in a straight line with a rate of about 5 GB per day. Free memory as reported by free and /proc/meminfo decreases at the same rate. Slab is currently at 46 GB. However, apparently the machine experienced problems nonetheless, and I'm afraid the same will happen again in a few days when Slab surpasses 90 GB. Questions I have these questions: Am I correct in thinking that the Slab memory is always physical RAM, and the number is already subtracted from the MemFree value? Is such a high number of dentry entries normal? The PHP application has access to around 1.5 M files, however most of them are archives and not being accessed at all for regular web traffic. What could be an explanation for the fact that the number of cached inodes is much lower than the number of cached dentries, should they not be related somehow? If the system runs into memory trouble, should the kernel not free some of the dentries automatically? What could be a reason that this does not happen? Is there any way to "look into" the dentry cache to see what all this memory is (i.e. what are the paths that are being cached)? Perhaps this points to some kind of memory leak, symlink loop, or indeed to something the PHP application is doing wrong. The PHP application code as well as all asset files are mounted via GlusterFS network file system, could that have something to do with it? Please keep in mind that I can not investigate as root, only as a regular user, and that the administrator refuses to help. He won't even run the typical echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches test to see if the Slab memory is indeed reclaimable. Any insights into what could be going on and how I can investigate any further would be greatly appreciated. • Operator of the week - Assert

  Well my friends, I was wondering how to help you in a practical way to understand execution plans. So I think I'll talk about the Showplan Operators. Showplan Operators are used by the Query Optimizer (QO) to build the query plan in order to perform a specified operation. A query plan will consist of many physical operators. The Query Optimizer uses a simple language that represents each physical operation by an operator, and each operator is represented in the graphical execution plan by an icon. I'll try to talk about one operator every week, but so as to avoid having to continue to write about these operators for years, I'll mention only of those that are more common: The first being the Assert. The Assert is used to verify a certain condition, it validates a Constraint on every row to ensure that the condition was met. If, for example, our DDL includes a check constraint which specifies only two valid values for a column, the Assert will, for every row, validate the value passed to the column to ensure that input is consistent with the check constraint. Assert  and Check Constraints: Let's see where the SQL Server uses that information in practice. Take the following T-SQL: IF OBJECT_ID('Tab1') IS NOT NULL   DROP TABLE Tab1 GO CREATE TABLE Tab1(ID Integer, Gender CHAR(1))  GO  ALTER TABLE TAB1 ADD CONSTRAINT ck_Gender_M_F CHECK(Gender IN('M','F'))  GO INSERT INTO Tab1(ID, Gender) VALUES(1,'X') GO To the command above the SQL Server has generated the following execution plan: As we can see, the execution plan uses the Assert operator to check that the inserted value doesn't violate the Check Constraint. In this specific case, the Assert applies the rule, 'if the value is different to "F" and different to "M" than return 0 otherwise returns NULL'. The Assert operator is programmed to show an error if the returned value is not NULL; in other words, the returned value is not a "M" or "F". Assert checking Foreign Keys Now let's take a look at an example where the Assert is used to validate a foreign key constraint. The same concept showed above is used, if the exit value is "0" than keep running the query, but if NULL is returned shows an exception. The second Assert is validating the result of the Tab1 and Tab2 join. It is interesting to see the "[Expr1007] IS NULL". To understand that you need to know what this Expr1007 is, look at the Probe Value (green text) in the text plan and you will see that it is the result of the join. If the value passed to the INSERT at the column ID_Gender exists in the table Tab2, then that probe will return the join value; otherwise it will return NULL. So the Assert is checking the value of the search at the Tab2; if the value that is passed to the INSERT is not found  then Assert will show one exception. If the value passed to the column ID_Genders is NULL than the SQL can't show a exception, in that case it returns "0" and keeps running the query. If you run the INSERT above, the SQL will show an exception because of the "X" value, but if you change the "X" to "F" and run again, it will show an exception because of the value "4". If you change the value "4" to NULL, 1, 2 or 3 the insert will be executed without any error. Assert checking a SubQuery: The Assert operator is also used to check one subquery. As we know, one scalar subquery can't validly return more than one value: Sometimes, however, a  mistake happens, and a subquery attempts to return more than one value . Here the Assert comes into play by validating the condition that a scalar subquery returns just one value. Is very interesting to see that  the Query Optimizer is smart enough be able to avoid using assert operators when they are not necessary. For instance: INSERT INTO Tab1(ID_TipoSexo, Sexo) VALUES((SELECT ID_TipoSexo FROM Tab1 WHERE ID = 1), 'F') INSERT INTO Tab1(ID_TipoSexo, Sexo) VALUES((SELECT TOP 1 ID_TipoSexo FROM Tab1), 'F')  For both these INSERTs, the Query Optimiser is smart enough to know that only one row will ever be returned, so there is no need to use the Assert. • Sharing A Stage: JDeveloper/ADF & NetBeans/Java EE 6?

  A highlight for me during last week's Oracle Developer Day in Romania (which I blogged about here) was meeting Jernej Kaše (who is from Slovenia, just like my philosopher hero Slavoj Žižek), who is an Oracle Fusion Middleware evangelist. At the conference, while I was presenting NetBeans and Java EE 6 in one room, Jernej was presenting JDeveloper and ADF in another room. The application he created looks as follows, i.e., a realistic CRUD app, with a master/detail view, a search feature, and validation: In a conversation during a break, we started imagining a scenario where the two of us would be on the same stage, taking turns talking about NetBeans/Java EE and JDeveloper/ADF. In that way, attendees at a conference wouldn't need to choose which of the two topics to attend, because they'd be handled in the same session, with the session possibly being longer so that sufficient time could be spent on the respective technologies. (The JDeveloper/ADF session would then not be competing with the NetBeans/Java EE 6 session, since they'd be handled simultaneously.) The session would focus on the similarities/differences between the two respective tools/solutions, which would be extremely interesting and also unique. The crucial question in making this kind of co-presentation possible is whether (and how quickly) an application such as the one created above with JDeveloper/ADF could be created with NetBeans/Java EE 6. The NetBeans/Java EE 6 story is extremely strong on the model and controler levels, but less strong on the view layer. Though there are choices between using PrimeFaces, RichFaces, and IceFaces, that support is quite limited in the absence of a visual designer or of other specific tools (e.g., code generators to generate snippets of PrimeFaces) connected to JSF component libraries. However, it so happens that in recent months we at NetBeans have established really good connections with the PrimeFaces team (more about that another time). So I asked them what it would take to write the above UI in PrimeFaces. The PrimeFaces team were very helpful. So there's not much help for creating such a UI right now. I don't believe that a visual designer is mandatory to create the above. A few code generators and file templates could do the job too. And I'm looking forward to seeing those kinds of tools for PrimeFaces, as well as other JSF component libraries, appearing in NetBeans IDE in upcoming releases. A related option would be for the NetBeans generated CRUD app to include the option of having a master/detail view, as well as the option of having a search feature, i.e., the application generators would provide the option of having additional features typical in Java enterprise apps. In the absence of such tools, there still is room, I believe, for NetBeans/Java EE and JDeveloper/ADF sharing a stage at a conference. The above file would have been prepared up front and the presenter would state that fact. The UI layer is only one aspect of a Java EE 6 application, so that the presenter would have ample other features to show (i.e., the entity class generation, the tools for working with servlets, with session beans, etc) prior to getting to the point where the statement would be made: "On the UI layer, I have prepared this Facelets file, which I will now show you can be connected to the lower layers of the application as follows." At that point, the session beans could be hooked into the Facelets file, the file would be saved, the browser refreshed, and then the whole application would work exactly as the ADF application does. • asp.net content page has problem with CascadingDropDown.

  I have asp.net content page with an update panel, asp.net controls with ajax extenders and it has asp.net button with event click. everything is working ok exept one case. I have 3 DropDownList with CascadingDropDown extenders. when I click the button without selecting anything from DropDownLists then click on the button the event click will work OK but if I select anything my page will respond when I click on the button.   Hey I installed the Asp.net Ajax toolkit. In my site I use the NummericUpDown from that toolkit. Now, I want that a label changes when the NummericUpDown Textboxes changes. I try to use JavaScript for this, but I always get the following error: 'ASP.orders_aspx' does not contain a definition for 'changeAmount' and no extension method 'changeAmount' accepting a first argument of type 'ASP.orders_aspx' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) • jqgrid retrieving empty rows using webapi (REST)

  I'm using jqgrid in an ASPNET MVC4 project with WebApi (REST), Entity Framework 5 using Unit Of Work and Repository patterns. My problem is that I see the data flowing as json to the browser and I see three rows in the grid, but those rows are empty, and the data is not shown (three empty rows in the grid). • Gridview delete/edit not working when using select parameter

  new to ASP.NET. I created a sqldatasource and set up basic select query (SELECT * FROM Accounts) using the wizard. I then had the sqldatasource wizard create the INSERT, EDIT and DELETE queries. Connected this datasource to a gridview with EDITING and DELETING enabled. Everything works fine. The SELECT query returns all records and I can edit/delete them. Now I need to send a parameter to the SELECT command to filter the records to those with the user's id (pulled from Membership.GetUser). When I add this parameter, the SELECT command works fine, but the EDIT/DELETE buttons in the gridview no longer work. No error is generated. The page refreshes but the records were not updated in the database. I don't understand what is wrong. • How to convert an ORM to its subclass using Hibernate ?

  Hi everybody, For example, I have two classes : Person and Employee (Employee is a subclass of Person). Person : has a lastname and a firstname. Employee : has also a salary. On the client-side, I have a single HTML form where i can fill the person informations (like lastname and firstname). I also have a "switch" between "Person" and "Employee", and if the switch is on Employee I can fill the salary field. On the server-side, Servlets receive informations from the client and use the Hibernate framework to create/update data to/from the database. The mapping i'm using is a single table for persons and employee, with a discriminator. I don't know how to convert a Person in an Employee. I firstly tried to : load the Person p from the database create an empty Employee e object copy values from p into e set the salary value save e into the database But i couldn't, as I also copy the ID, and so Hibernate told me they where two instanciated ORM with the same id. And I can't cast a Person into an Employee directly, as Person is Employee's superclass. There seems to be a dirty way : delete the person, and create an employee with the same informations, but I don't really like it.. • model binding of non-sequential arrays

  I am having a table in which i`m dynamically creating and deleting rows. How can I change the code such that the rows be added and deleted and the model info property filled accordingly. Bearing in mind that the rows can be dynamically created and deleted, I may have Info[0], Inf0[3], info[4]... My objective is to be able to bind the array even if it`s not in sequence. • Disabling checkboxes based on selection of another checkbox in jquery

  Hi, I want to disable a set of checkbox based on selection of one textbox and enable the disabled ones if the checkbox is unchecked. In the code below. If someone checks the checkbox for project cost under change this parameter then checkbox for project cost under Generate simulated value for this param should be disabled and all the checkboxes under change this parameter should be disabled except for checked one. Similarly this should be done each parameter like Project cost,avg hours,Project completion date, hourly rate etc. One way i could think of was of on the click function disable each checkbox by the id. • Help trying to get two-finger scrolling to work on Asus UL80VT

  Multi-touch works fine on Windows 7 with: two-fingers scroll vertical and horizontally, two-finger tap for middle click, and three-finger tap for right click. However with Ubuntu, I've never been able to get multi-touch to "save" and work, I was able to get it to work a few times but after restarting - it would just reset back. I have the settings for two-finger scrolling on: Mouse and Touchpad Touchpad Two-finger scrolling (selected) Enable horizontal scrolling (ticked) The cursor stops moving when I try to scroll with two fingers, but it doesn't actually scroll the page. When I perform xinput list, I get: Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ETPS/2 Elantech ETF0401 id=13 [slave pointer (2)] I've tried to install some 'synaptics-dkms' bug-fix (from a few years back) but that didn't work, so I removed that. I've tried installing 'uTouch' but that didn't seem to do anything so removed it. Solution (not ideal for most people) So, I ended up reinstalling a fresh 12.04 after indirectly playing around with burg and plymouth then removing plymouth which removed 50+ packages (I saw the warnings but was way too tired and assumed I could just 'reinstall' them all after (except that didn't work). • Stretch in multiple components using af:popup, af:region, af:panelTabbed

  Case study: I have a pop-up(dialogue) that contains a region(separate taskflow) showing a tab. The contents of this tab is in a region having a separate taskflow. The jsff page of this taskflow contains a panelSplitter which in turn contains a table. In short the components are : pop-up(dialogue) --> region(separate taskflow) --> tab --> region(separate taskflow) --> panelSplitter --> table At times the tab is not displayed with 100% width or the table in panelSplitter is not 100% visible or the splitter is not visible. Maintaining the stretch for all the components is difficult......not any more!!! Below is the solution that you can make use of in many similar scenarios. I am mentioning the major code snippets affecting the stretch and alignment. pop-up: <af:popup> <af:dialog id="d2" type="none" title="" inlineStyle="width:1200px"> <af:region value="#{bindings.PriceChangePopupFlow1.regionModel}" id="r1"/> </af:dialog> The above region is a jsff containing multiple tabs. I am showing code for a single tab. I kept the tab in a panelStretchLayout. <af:panelStretchLayout id="psl1" topHeight="300px" styleClass="AFStretchWidth"> <af:panelTabbed id="pt1"> <af:showDetailItem text="PO Details" id="sdi1" stretchChildren="first" > <af:region value="#{bindings.PriceChangePurchaseOrderFlow1.regionModel}" id="r1" binding="# {pageFlowScope.priceChangePopupBean.poDetailsRegion}" /> This "region" displays a .jsff containing a table in a panelSplitter. <af:panelSplitter id="ps1"  orientation="horizontal" splitterPosition="700"> <f:facet name="first"> <af:panelHeader text="PurchaseOrder" id="ph1"> <af:table id="md1" rows="#{bindings.PurchaseOrderVO.rangeSize}" That's it!!! We're done... Note the stretchChildren="first" attribute in the af:showDetailItem. That does the trick for us. Oracle docs say the following about stretchChildren :  Valid Values: none, first The stretching behavior for children. Acceptable values include: "none": does not attempt to stretch any children (the default value and the value you need to use if you have more than a single child; also the value you need to use if the child does not support being stretched) "first": stretches the first child (not to be used if you have multiple children as such usage will produce unreliable results; also not to be used if the child does not support being stretched)
