Connect divs with (non-straight) lines [migrated]

I'd like to develop my site with a layout that looks somewhat like houses with connected plumbing, or multiple computers connected to a network. Basically, the will be boxes floating in space, with lines connecting some of the boxes. I'd like these lines to have some turns in them as well (just simple 90 degree corners) rather than just a straight line. My question is what is the best way to achieve this, and perhaps a small example. My thoughts were to use: PHP and CSS: I could create a background grid and then, with some complicated algorithms, draw paths using the grid's borders. This would be more dynamic, but I'm not sure I can plot the math all by myself. just CSS: Perhaps this is as simple as making some pre-drawn lines like L-shapes and T-junctions, then just placing and scaling them. But I don't believe there's a way to scale an image by slicing it.. so the line width would be scaled and thus each image would look different. Any thoughts?

What programming language matches this description? [on hold]

I am looking for a functional language that is basically dynamic programming - i.e. one where functions are first-class objects - but where all function calls are asynchronous by default; i.e. you define function X(a,b) = (Y(a)+Z(b)), and when X() is called, it sees it is waiting for the return from two functions, runs one in the current thread, and spawns a new thread to run the other. The future is very much parallel processing; multiple cores, multiple machines, the internet of things, etc. and I was wondering if there was a language specifically designed to make this kind of parallelization easy. I currently have only used imperative languages (c, php, java, ruby, etc), so I don't know anything about what kind of functional languages are available.

Should repeated use of the camera crash an app?

I have an app that builds a slideshow from user images. They can grab from their library or take a picture. I have found that repeated use of grabbing an image from the library is fine. But repeated use of taking a picture causes erratic behavior. I have been getting crashes but mostly what happens seems to be a reloading of the view after "didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo", which messes things up. I have no leaks and it seems to be releasing properly after each picture is taken. I am resizing the image and saving it in a data base. Is anyone else running into this situation? Was the camera not designed to be called this often?

How does a linked library combined with the main executable program file interact with a kernel?

I was attempting to find an answer to this, and I did to some degree, but definitely not anywhere good enough to form a respectable, sensible and clear answer. If I am using Windows, Mac, Linux, or nearly any modern made OS for desktop IBM-compatible PCs, laptops, even tablets and smartphones, there's virtual memory. Clearly, compiling, at least on Windows I know this, an executable object file, such as a simple C "Hello World" output to a terminal, will be linked with the standard library, and several other Window's system software, dynamic linked libraries, and the like. However, how does linking all of these executables together or resources form a connectable interaction with, say, a device driver or any other stuff on the lower level?

If a NSView uses autolayout, do all of its subviews also need to use autolayout for positioning?

I have a view in a window, the position and size of the view are calculated with autolayout. The view has a subview, a draggable NSView subclass. It is really easy to make a NSView "draggable" by overriding -mouseDown: and -mouseDragged: and changing the frame of the view directly. The view hierarchy is as follows, What is the best way of making the subview draggable in this case? For example, Is it possible for the subview to not use autolayout, so that it can be positioned by changing the frame directly? i.e. the window positions the main view, but then autolayout does not layout the subview inside the main view. Or to all views in the hierarchy need to use autolayout. When I have used autolayout before, I have used it to make "fixed" layout that respond to resizing. But dragging a view with a mouse does't seems like a natural use case for autolayout.

jQuery Columnizer plugin only working correctly on window resize.

Hi, I'm using the jQuery Columnizer plugin, and I'm running into a weird problem. Using 3 columns, I columnize content from a hidden div into a target div. It distributes only one paragraph to each of the first two columns and then puts all the remaining paragraphs into the last column. But the strange thing is that it auto-corrects itself when the window is resized. I'm guessing it has something to do with the target div resizing since opening a firebug console window also causes it to auto-correct itself. MovieClip progress bar width is too small relative to parent container

I am new to ActionScripot and Flash and I am stuck with the following problem: On the stage I have a movieclip (Container, originally 200px width) and inside it with a progressbar movieclip (originally 700px width), scaled with Free Transform Tool to fit the parent container. The width of the container changes run-time while resizing the scene. In ActionScript I have a function which should set the progress bar width according to a calculated percentage value: private function updateProgress(event:TimerEvent):void { var barWidth:int = _container.width; var progress:Number = _stream.time / _stream.duration * barWidth; _progressBar.width = progress; } My problem is that the progressBar even at full time (100%) is only at 1/4 of the parent container. I assume that it comes from the symbols original size. Can I correct this programatically, or I must redesign it with the "designer"? I hope I made clear my problem, as I said, I'm new in Flash. what is the best way to add avoidance behaviour to an AI framework?

I have a small AI framework for a shooting based game. Although this is rarely needed, as when agents are close to each other they are usually fighting, I would none the less like some way of implementing avoidance behaviour. For example, if in the future I wanted to take away their weapons and have many of them wonder around in a crowd, how would I make them not hit / pass through each other, but instead avoid each other? two ideas I had would be to add steering behaviour and allow that to deviate from their path, or to use a dynamic pathfinding technique. Are there better ways? What is the more respected practice?

capture the last WM_SIZE

When I resize my window I want to tell another part of my program that my window has changed size. I read on MSDN that: WM SIZE Message The WM SIZE message is sent to a window after its size has changed. However, I receive the WM_SIZE even when dragging. I noticed that there is also a WM_SIZING message that is sent when my window is resizing. At the moment I do not see the difference between WM_SIZE and WM_SIZING. Is there some way I can capture the very last WM_SIZE message, as to not "spam" my program with resize messages?

Using AWS S3 for photo storage

I'm going to be using S3 to store user uploaded photos. Obviously, I wont be serving the image files to user agents without resizing them down. However, not one size would do, as some thumbnails will be smaller than other larger previews. So, I was thinking of making a standard set of dimensions scaling from the lowest 16x16 to some highest 1024x1024. Is this a good way to solve this problem? What if I need a new size later on? How would you solve this?

i am learning Java at the moment and have the following question: i am adding my controls to JFrame and then pack() before displaying. this runs the application and all is very nice. i was wondering is there a way to stop the user from resizing the application window? also is there a way to for the image in JLabel to expand as the user changes the application window? at the moment i have it as: constraints.fill = GridBagConstraints.BOTH; constraints.anchor = GridBagConstraints.CENTER; and it only centers the image, i would like to be able to expand/shrink the image. thanks.

Are there any good Javascript/Jquery thumbnail script equivalents to TimThimb (PHP)?

For those unaware of TimThumb, it will take any image, of any size or dimension and create a thumbnail on the fly to any desired size. The beauty of it is that it really works on any dimension you feed it through a combination of either resizing the image, cropping or zoom cropping the image. Ive been searching for jscript equvalents but they either require the user to actually mask out the thumbs manually (looking for a script that automatically does it to images) or the scripts can't handle images in a different aspect ratio. Thanks for any leads on this!

Hello I build a script that does image uploading and resizing and it all works well, but how can I get the URL from image afterwards? I don't want my Image Source in HTML be like "../img/cat/1.png/" I want it to be like "http://MyIP/img/cat/1.png" I understand that I can just make a variable like $myHost = "http://blabla.com"; and add strip the ".." at the beginning but then it's not so good if I want to use it on other site because I need to replace this all the time. Maybe there is any other way?

Android png images big in memory

i have an application in android that has an imageflipper. Problem is, after about 8 images loaded to memory, i get an out of memory error. Well, i tried to do dynamic image loading, so that if the user flips 2 images, i'll load next 2 to memory and delete 2 first ones. It kind of works, but it ugly and i have trouble when user flips images back(imageflipper.showprevious()), i can't really shift all images and place new images to the beginning. My question is, is there a better way to do this kind of stuff? Resizing images didn't really help.

Is it true that software engineers don't code but just make diagrams, functional specs. and othe related documents? I also noticed that there are no SE standards or board exams to pass and its really a dynamic and situational job. So basically I can just proclaim myself as a software engineer based on experience and product?

Something very strange with network

Hello, I have Windows 7 and I have very strange thing with my network. Some time I was connected through wireless router and my IP was 192.168.2.103, router's IP was 192.168.2.1 and some other IP was 192.168.2.100. The last I get from page "active DHCP clients" of web interface of the router and from "wireless clients" I may to see that 192.168.2.100 not (!) belong to my MAC address. Router build by EDimax. So after that I disabled wireless function of the router and restarted it. In this time I had not ping to 192.168.2.1. Also I had not any other connection, not wireless nor cable, but (!) I still had ping to 192.168.2.100 and I not understand what this voodoo is... I thought my days of dealing with DBFs as a "production data" source were over, but HA (no such luck). I recently had to retrieve, modify and replace some data that needed to be delivered in a DBF file. Everything was fine until I realized / remembered the DBF driver does not ACTUALLY delete records from the data source -- it only marks them for deletion. You are responsible for handling the "chaff" either by using a utility to remove deleted records or by simply ignoring them. If imported into Excel, the marked-deleted records are ignored, but the file size will reflect the extra content. So, I went hunting for a method to "Pack" the records (removing deleted ones and resizing the DBF file) and eventually ran across the FOXPRO driver at ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vfoxpro/bb190233.aspx ). Once installed, I changed the DSN in the code to the new one I created in the ODBC Administrator and ran some tests. Using MSQuery, I simply tested the raw SQL command Pack {tablename} and it WORKED! One really neat thing is the PACK command is used like regular SQL instructions; "Pack {tablename}" is all that is needed. It is necessary, however, to close all connections to the database before issuing the PACK command.
