• How to retrieve data from a corruped volume

  Hi, My Ubuntu 10.10 just crashed(probably due to hardware error and in the end I was getting error like Unknown filesystem ..... grub> .. GRUB console before i could take some action) and i reinstalled the same version form USB stick. I had ubuntu installed in ext4 file system and I am also having the same filesystem in the same hard disk on different drive. When I try to access my previous filesystem, i get error Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda6, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so I had some important files in the previous volume, I don't know how to retrieve them. And what are the chances that I would get the same outcome (hardware error)? Please help me!

• What is this chargeback scam from eBooks bought on my website?

  We have a scammer that is buying our e-Books and then performing chargebacks. Our e-Books don't have DRM, so if they wanted to resell them, they would only need to buy each book once. But instead, they keep buying the same books over and over again and then performing hundreds of chargebacks. We have created some additional rules in our fraud protection tools to block certain aspects, even though all the info looks legit, and are hopeful this will slow them down. But my question is: What is the scam? If they aren't getting any product and they only get chargebacks for something they already purchased, then they can't get additional money from the credit card company, so then what's their motivation?

• Building a chat-like functionality in iOS

  I was planning to implement a functionality wherein a user can send data to a friend of his, similar to sending messages in WhatsApp. This is how I broke down the problem : The user registers for the app. This equates to user info being stored on a dedicated server. With the phone number as the key identifier. The user selects the friend to send a message to and pushes the data. The receiver polls the server regularly and acknowledges that the data has been received. I did a little bit of research and am thinking of implementing this using the XMPP Framework for iOS. Any pointers as to is this the correct implementation or some advice in general?

• Verifying Office 2010 SP1 Installation

  So you downloaded and installed SP1, but now you want to verify that SP1 actually installed! Looking at Outlook's Help Screen under Help->About, it isn't readily apparent that SP1 is installed. Like me, you probably expected to see 14.1.something. Perhaps 14.0.something SP1, right? If you click on that "Additional Version and Copyright Information", another window will pop up and show you a bit more useful info (if you don't have the version numbers committed to memory) That window *does* give us that comforting SP1, and now we can determine that if you have Office 14.1.6023.1000 (and beyond) you are indeed runnning Office 2010 SP1!

The procedure seems straight forward but I'm having issues validating my results in the Google Rich Snippets Testing Tool. Check out this review page, here I'm using the 'reviewRating' property item to specify rating values for that particular review. I followed the same format as defined in schema.org/Rating but this markup fails validation in Google's rich snippet testing tool with the following error info. • Evolution has no access to couchdb

  Evolution gives the error "Cannot open addressbook". "We were unable to open this addressbook. This either means you have entered an incorrect URI, or the server is unreachable". "Details: Operation not permitted". (rough translation from Dutch). Enabling verbose logging in (desktop)couchdb tells me roughly the same: [info] [<0.7875.1>] 127.0.0.1 - - 'PUT' /contacts/ 400 [debug] [<0.7875.1>] httpd 400 error response: {"error":"invalid_consumer","reason":"Invalid consumer (key or signature method)."} It seems that evolution tries to fetch the contacts, then couchdb denies access, and then evolution fails to do a proper oauth. This is on Ubuntu 10.10, with its default dektopcouch 1.0.1. Any hints on where to start would be most appreciated :)

  I am quite sick of a Win7 limited edition that was pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One 533. I want to have Ubuntu as the only OS on this little thing. I have tested Ubuntu on a pretty unstable system and I am simply in love with it, despite the fact that I am still on the learning path. So my questions is how do I format/erase all previous info, including windows files? I am interested in a real cleanup of the drives rather than just a re-partitioning, because I travel every now and then and I want to prevent any personal data remaining on the drives for anyone with recovery knowledge to sniff through. • I cannot login into any TTYs

  (In my case this message never appeared before installing Ubuntu One - see this question). Can I use Ubuntu One and avoid being prompted each time like this? I use Lubuntu 12.04. Edit: After exchanging comments I add the supplementary info: I am asked for password and to select session if I log out and in (auto-login is NOT set). Ubuntu One is installed but set NOT to start with session. Keyring appears nonetheless. Before installing Ubuntu One this didn't happen. Also, following the advice of con-f-use, I have entered ps -A | grep -i ubunt[u] in terminal, and got 2346 ? 00:00:01 ubuntuone-syncd, which means that ubuntuone is running when it was not supposed to.

• Is there a current tool to build your boot / partition on hard drive?

  I tried Windows 8 Consumer Preview a couple months ago and it wiped out my partition table... or the boot information. So now the machine cannot boot to anything at all. Is there Ubuntu tools or Linux tool that can fix all the partition and make them boot again? (The partitions have Windows 7 and Vista on them. I run Ubuntu as a VM on Win 7). I tried another tool running on Vista and was able to see the Win 7 partition, except that tool wiped out the Vista boot info later on.

  Google analytics describes a bounce as a user that visits and leaves before after their first page. But if your site is a one page site, with content loaded dynamicly using javascript you could have a user one your site go through loads of info, text images but would that still count as a bounce ? Or once they click on an a-tag even if it is <a href="#"> can google analytics see that ? (im aware of click tracking in analytics) but i was wandering if google picks up these clicks by default..

  So, the short version of my sad story is that I tried upgrade Ubuntu to 12.04 and wireless driver has stopped working. I have tried all the solutions but nothing seem to be working. When I try to install my wireless from "Additional Drivers" Its says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log The lspci command gives me the following info about wireless: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) I have tried removing bcm drivers and reinstalling, but nothing seems to be working. rfkill is good too.

  Really don't see them much anymore, but here's an example of what I mean: From comments: These are "high pressure" sales pages, design to overload the user with information, sell them on the belief that what they're buying is what they need, normally have a lot of testimonials, highlighted text, etc. The pages I'm talking about are not user friendly, they're aggressive sales pitches designed to target users wanting to belief the webpage they just landed on will solve there problems for an "affordable" price. Here's an example: www_landingpagecashmachine_com (remove the underscores, since I'm attempting to avoid linking to a site like that...) Bonus points: if you're able to tell me the name of the guy/company that popularized these types of pages; recall hearing about his company years ago, after he died in a crash while racing on a track with his Ferrari club on the west coast of the US. (Update: Appears Corey Rudl was the guy's name, and his company was called "The Internet Marketing Center." Even with that info, I've still been unable to find the name for these type of pages.)

For example, those visitors coming from http://www.domain.com/abc123, I can get their pageviews, time on site, bounce rate, referrer pages per visit etc. After that I can store that info into by database on daily basis. • What is a good way to pause a preseed network installation temporarily?

  I have been learning how to do PXE network install of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. I would like to have a way to pause the installation at a certain point temporarily. This way, I can for example figure out why a particular preseed d-i statement is not working with Alt-F4, or test out a particular statement in busybox with Alt-F2. I do know that I can leave out the answer to an essential question, e.g. defining language but without country would trigger the debian-installer to prompt me for such info. But I am looking for more fine grained control of pausing. Is it possible?

• Atheros AR2413 wireless not working after shutdown

  I am using a Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer aspire 3680 laptop and my wifi is not working. I followed the below commands to install the madwifi driver: sudo su apt-get install subversion cd /usr/src svn checkout http://madwifi-project.org/svn/madwifi/trunk madwifi tar cfvz madwifi.tgz cd madwifi make && make install echo "blacklist ath5k" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf echo "ath_pci" /etc/modules modprobe ath_pci sudo reboot After installation I am facing the same problem. My wifi wont work after I shutdown. Infact it didn't work after suspend but I rectified that problem by the following commands: Command 1: sudo rmmod -f ath_pci sudo rfkill unblock all sudo modprobe ath_pci along with the command SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci added to the /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi directory. So if I suspend and then on my laptop the wifi loads well and doesn't create a problem. But if I shutdown my laptop the wifi never loads again and eachtime I have to run a Ubuntu 9.04 live CD to load it. I did try adding the Command 1 to the /etc/rc.local directory but still it doesn't work. So my question is: What should I do in order to make my wireless work without having to run a live CD of ubuntu 9.04 everytime after shutdown? Thanks.   I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my DELL Latitude E6230, on first boot wifi worked properly but when I updated the software it stopped working. I can't figure out the problem... In the "Network" setting window, I only see "Wired" and "Network proxy". Wireless has just disappeared: rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no and that's it! Nothing about the wireless controller... Any suggestions?

  I am following this tutorial to install Android onto my computer VIA Virtual Box. My problem is, they want you to download liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 then they want you to merge these two files with cat liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 > liveandroidv0.3.iso in the Terminal. The problem is, when I run the command, I get the following output cat liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 liveandroidv0.3.iso.002 > liveandroidv0.3.iso cat: liveandroidv0.3.iso.001: No such file or directory cat: liveandroidv0.3.iso.002: No such file or directory So, I was wondering if there was an alternative way to merge these files? Or if you guy's could help me merge them this way? Extra info: OS: Ubuntu 12.10 I downloaded the files to my /downloads folder in my home directory.
