  I am looking for a reasonable solution for network location switching after VPN connection is established for Windows 7. The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private. How to achieve this switching and duality? One option I see is switching to IPSec...

• Slow performance over network (Ubuntu)

  i did setup this NodeJs TCP Server and tested it with a message flooder. Just to see how the performance of the server is. While the message throughput is great if i run the server and the message flooder on the same computer (ubuntu), the throughput dramaticaly decreases if i start the server on computer1(ubuntu1) and the message flooder on computer2(also ubuntu). Both PC are on the same network. In fact, they are directly connected to each other. I started searching the internet for reasons and i suppose i need to tune TCP on both Ubuntu-pcs but until now i haven't been successfull at all. Has anyone experienced such problems, or could someone help me out? • SSH access from outside to a pc inside network

  I have a static IP and ADSL router linked to a linksys wireless router to which all my machines are connected. I would want to setup SVN on one of machines and provide SSH access which should be accessible by users outside my network. Would this be possible? Even just SVN access through web should be fine. Please let me know what all things should be done to achieve this ? I have Ubuntu VM running in a iMac Leopard machine and another 2 Win 7 32/64 bit machines.   I'd like to simulate a high-latency, low-bandwidth network connection on my Linux machine. Limiting bandwidth has been discussed before, e.g. here, but I can't find any posts which address limiting both bandwidth and latency. I can get either high latency or low bandwidth using tc. But I haven't been able to combine these into a single connection. I'm using a cron to have it run once a day. In reality the macbook isn't always on, so I'm looking for a way to run rsync when ever the two computers are connected on the same wifi network.   I'm looking for a distributed, fault-tolerant network storage system which exposes block devices (not filesystems) on the clients. A client's block device should write simultaneously to several storage nodes A client's block device should not fail as long as not all storage nodes backing it went down The master should automatically redistribute storages' data when a storage node fails or gets added/ removed A single master (which is for metadata only) is fine So ideally the architecture would be very similar to moosefs (http://www.moosefs.org/) but instead of exposing a real filesystem mounted using a fuse client it'd expose block devices on the clients. I know of iscsi and drbd but both don't seem to offer what I'm looking for. Or am I missing something?

• Windows Hosted Network Redirect to IIS

  I would like to setup a Windows 7 machine as a wifi hotspot that always redirects to the IIS web hosting on the same machine. I have the hotspot piece working with the built in hosted network of Widnows 7. The webhosting was easy enough with IIS. Now, how do I connect the 2? The idea is to have a standalone device that users will be able to connect to the wifi and any webpage they go to will redirect to the internal webpage. I only expect 1 or 2 users at a time and there won't be any internet access involved.

• Unexpected network traffic?

  My internet connection is via a fixed wireless connection using a 900MHz Motorola Canopy module. The router reports a fairly consistent 32-64Kbps of incoming traffic on the WAN port. When I attached a PC directly to the port and run Wireshark, I get a dump showing a lot of chatter from other machines that I presume are connected to the same tower. This didn't include end-to-end traffic, but was there were a lot of ARP requests, SSDP traffic, ICMP and other network discovery type stuff. Is this 'normal' or does it suggest a misconfiguration somewhere? As far as I can tell there is no need for my modem to be receiving any of this traffic (other than wanting to know what the names of my neighbours machines and printers are!) Since the internet connection is slow at the best of time, having this amount of background noise seems very wasteful.

  I was trying to create a remote desktop connection from Windows XP to my Windows Vista Ultimate Addition machine at home. This normally works fine. Today after my connection was dropped, I tried to reconnect to my machine. It brings me to the normal startup screen, but when I tried to log in, it gave me the message "This network connection doesn't exist". This doesn't make much sense, as I have reached a Windows style login screen already. My connection returned later that day, but I'm curious as to what happened. Anyone see this before?

• Best way to script checking whether a machine is on the corporate network

  I am writing a Powershell script to determine if a machine is on the corporate network. The machine may or may not be on the domain, so I want to check at "IP" level. Have written something to check by pinging a couple of servers on a couple of different subnets (to get around the risk of someone being on another (external) subnet with a host on the same IP.) Works, but it's a bit slow, and not especially "future-proof" - e.g. in 2 years time when I decomission the server it'll break. Is there a way I can use the dns suffix being given by the local dhcp server? Just direct me what I need to check - I can figure out the script. Ta, Ben

• Get the "source network address" in Event ID 529 audit entries on Windows XP

  In windows server 2003 when an Event 529 (logon failure) occures with a logon type of 10 (remote logon), the source network IP address is recorded in the event log. On a windows XP machine, this (and some other details) are omitted. If a bot is trying a brute force over RDP (some of my XP machines are (and need to be) exposed with a public IP address), i cannot see the originating IP address so i don't know what to block (with a script i run every few minutes). The DC does not log this detail either when the logon attempt is to the client xp machine and the DC is only asked to authenticate the credentials. Any help getting this detail in the log would be appreciated.

  So I have an Amazon EC2 box running Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory installed on it. I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine, which is set to use the Active Directory box as its DNS and WINS server. I'm trying to join the virtual machine to the domain, and I'm asked for authentication. I give authentication, wait a minute, and I get an error saying: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ad.chigs.me": The network path was not found. How can I fix this so that I'll be able to join the domain?

• No network adapter drivers after Windows re-install

  This is a pretty basic question. I got a PC (Packard Bell Easynote TK11-BZ-010BE) that had linux on it, so I thought, just delete the partition and its alright. Well, it wasn't. I went into grub recovery and couldn't do anything, so I re-installed windows again. Now the problem is that everything works expect my network adapter. When I go to device manager, I get that there aren't any driver's for it installed. But without internet, I can't install the so called driver finders. How should I solve this?

• DNS Resolution doesn't work after uninstalling Cisco VPN & Deterministic Network Enhancer in Win 7

  I just upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After trying various methods to get the Cisco VPN client to work, I gave up and decided to just run it in XP mode. The last steps I tried were in this article ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/d880dfe5-7f44-4955-8620-2a9355d8ea8b/ ) After that, I uninstalled the Cisco client and rebooted. I uninstalled the Deterministic Network Enhancer and rebooted again. Both uninstalled successfully, but now I'm not able to resolve any DNS. The only way I can resolve DNS is to reinstall the DNE, reboot, and uninstall the DNE. Then I am able to resolve DNS lookups until I reboot again. Once it's rebooted, no more DNS. Any ideas?

What I'm looking for: centralized administration - server is Windows Server 2003 minimal admin overhead ability to do e-mail notification/alerts/reporting would be very cool 10-25 XP Clients (P3/P4 hardware) free or discounted solution for non-profits We can get a cheap license for Symantec Endpoint Protection. My past experience with Symantec has been bad, but I've heard good things about this product. However, I've also read that it's kind of a nightmare to setup and administer, and may not be worth it for the size of our network.

• Cannot connect to network

  I have a problem: I am on Debian. I configured my nic with a static ip (192.168.1.56). When I try to connect to a network, initially with ifconfig eth2 I get (correctly): eth2 inet addr:192.168.1.56 .... inet6 addr: fe80:221:ff:fe96:4598/64 but after a few seconds the 192.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too. When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect. At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.   is it possible to use network storage locations as mount points during installation? cause i want to separate system (ubuntu) with data (personal files). eg. if i have 5 computers i don't want to recreate /home/david 5 times. so i want to mount networkdrive/home to /home in local ubuntu server. so ALL users home folders could be used and maybe also networkdrive/projects to /projects. in that way its ok if i by accident repartitioned the local ubuntu server cause all data is not there on that server, but in the data server. is separating "data" from "logic" good in this case? and is it possible? what protocol should i use for the mapping over internet? (maybe the server is in Sweden, and the data is in Norway). thanks.

We are trying to reconfigure the setup, with these goals: wifi roaming between the access points user-based authentication that isn't as annoying as MAC address filtering. 1) The entire building is hardwired with ethernet, so I assume it should be easy to set up the routers to act as one big network, but I can't figure out how. Can someone point me in the right direction? The routers are consumer-grade linksys routers, is it possible to do this without getting new hardware? 2) For security, we will probably upgrade to WPA2, and I'm thinking of using the Enterprise version so that users can log in with a username, instead of having a single key (so if an employee leaves or something, their access can be removed). We have several on-site Windows servers, can one of them be set up as a RADIUS server, or is that best left to a dedicated machine (again, using existing hardware is good).

• Chrome developer tools - network panel gaps

  In the Chrome developer tools, under the network tab, I'm curious to know what is happening during the gaps. If you look at my image below, I have highlighted in orange the areas where these gaps exist. Where I'm able to load a lot of my page from cache it's a shame these large gaps occur as they make up most of my page load time. What exactly is happening in this time? EDIT Okay I found this answer which essentially sums up my question, so a different question: does anyone know a good method to reduce the length of these gaps? Presumably (albeit rather extreme) if I loaded all my CSS on the page there wouldn't be a delay after loading the CSS file before the images were loaded.

• Network backup for Macs and PCs - formatting question

  I'm trying to use a LaCie 2TB drive as an AirPort drive, for backup on a home network. We have one mac and two PC laptops. My plan is to create a Mac partition and a Windows partition. However, Disk Utility won't let me set the windows partition to Windows format; there's no option in the menu for it in the partition tab. Am I doing something wrong? Alternatively, is there a way to partition the drive with one partition that all three machines can see? We have a Mac G5 with 10.4 and two laptops with Windows 7. Thanks!

I want to show the simulation that involves a base station, with few wireless stations. The base station should start sending data once it computes a certain value . On receiving the data, each wireless must begin communicating with the base station. • Configure Wireless Network Card

  I recently upgraded the wireless network card in my Ubuntu PC from an 802.11g to an 802.11n. Now, it can't see my router. It doesn't appear in the list of networks that is displayed when you click on the NetworkManager icon in Gnome. Other networks are listed and I have connected to them (no password required!). I'm using the Windows driver through ndiswrapper and it can see the card. I tested the card in a Windows PC and everything worked. The router's log doesn't show any messages coming from the wireless card. What have I done wrong? If you need any more information, just leave a comment and I'll get add it to the question.
