• How do you deploy your SharePoint solutions?

  I am now in the process of planning the deployment of a SharePoint solution into a production environment. I have read about some tools that promise an easy way to automate this process, but nothing that seems to fit my scenario. In the testing phase I have used SharePoint Designer to copy site content between the different development and testing servers, but this process is manual and it seems a bit unnecessary. The site is made up of SharePoint web part pages with custom web parts, and a lot of Reporting Services report definitions. So, is there any good advice out there in this vast land of geeks on how to most efficiently create and deploy a SharePoint site for a multiple deployment scenario? Edit Just to clarify. I need to deploy several "SharePoint Sites" into an existing site collection. Since SharePoint likes to have its sites in the SharePoint content database, just putting the files into IIS is not an option at this time.

• How to append to an XML response an error attribute using Ruby on Rails 3?

  I am trying to implement REST APIs, so in my RoR3 application I have XML responses. Before to pass to a consumer the XML, I wuold like to check if there are errors and, if so, send back a response with error messages. I read "Active Record Validations and Callbacks" guides on the RoR website, but it seems not work in my case. I extract from the database a resource doing @response = User.find_by_id(1) and I wuold like, if possible, to add error to it. Seeing some examples I have seen how to report errors in an XML file format.xml { render :xml => @response.errors } but how I can add append new errors to the @response? Maybe something like this: errors.add(:password, "is invalid")

Now what I am trying to do is in a report I have the top 5 people who have visited the site and would like to then be able to drill down into what lessons they have clicked on. • Column.DbType affecting runtime behavior

  Hi According to the MSDN docs, the DbType property/attribute of a Column type/element is only used for database creation. Yet, today, when trying to submit data to an IMAGE column on a SQLCE database (not sure if only on CE), I got an exception of 'Data truncated to 8000 bytes'. This was due to the DbType still being defined as VARBINARY(MAX) which SQLCE does not support. Changing the type to IMAGE in the DbType fixes the issue. So what other surprises does Linq2SQL attributes hold in store? Is this a bug or intended? Should I report it to MS? UPDATE After getting the answer from Guffa, I tested it, but it seems for NVARCHAR(10) adding a 11 char length string causes a SQL exception, and not Linq2SQL one. The data was truncated while converting from one data type to another.   I have a loop which basically calls this every few seconds (after the timeout): while(true){ if(finished) return; switch(select(FD_SETSIZE, &readfds, 0, 0, &tv)){ case SOCKET_ERROR : report bad stuff etc; return; default : break; } // do stuff with the incoming connection } So basically for every few seconds (which is specified by tv), it reactivates the listening. This is run on thread B (not a main thread). There are times when I want to end this acceptor loop immediately from thread A (main thread), but seems like I have to wait until the time interval finishes.. Is there a way to disrupt the select function from another thread so thread B can quit instantly?

I have added a new parameter and bound it to a dataset to return a dropdownlist of resource names.   I want to test portions of a very complex app which includes both a major native Windows component and a substantial WPF GUI. Due to complexities I can't detail, it is impossible to run the native portion independently nor can I isolate the areas I want to test (spare me the lectures, we're talking a huge legacy code base and we do have refactoring plans). I'm looking for a unit test kit I can invoke on the native side but must be able to run with the app launched with the managed portion initialised. That seems to rule out the run executable feature of the cfix Windows unit test kit. I really like their philosophy, like WinUnit, of using DLL compilation as a way to add the reflective capabilities missing in C++ and gain a more NUnit-like experience. Ideally, I want something like WinUnit running within the application code and generating an HTML report. I'm trying to introduce more TDD and having things as lean as possible is important.

• MFC/WIN32: mouse hover highlight in listctrl

  The ListView control of Windows Explorer gives a highlight to whatever item is under the mouse, without affecting the current selection. This helps enormously with relating what item a given tooltip applies to within a listview - especially in report mode. However, I am currently unable to find any APIs that would give my MFC application's CListCtrl that same behavior. Extended styles only have LVS_EX_TRACKSELECT, which actually alters the current selection (yuck!). Does anyone know how to provide a standard CListCtrl (or whatever that actually sits on top of) the mouse-hot-tracking capability? I found some articles on how to provide per cell and per row tooltip text, but its hard to tell what the tooltips relate to without something highlighting...

• Low memory with 640Kb of live bytes?

  Hello, i've a problem with my application that need to display a lot of images and video. After running ObjectAlloc tool, i see that the live bytes is 640Kb and the overall memory is 31,54Mb when the application crash. In the organizer i get a "low memory" report so i guess the app crashed because low memory but the ObjectAllocation data don't make any sense to me... Any ideas?   Possible Duplicates: Why ‘this’ is a pointer and not a reference? SAFE Pointer to a pointer (well reference to a reference) in C# The this keyword in C++ gets a pointer to the object I currently am. My question is why is the type of this a pointer type and not a reference type. Are there any conditions under which the this keyword would be NULL? My immediate thought would be in a static function, but Visual C++ at least is smart enough to spot this and report static member functions do not have 'this' pointers. Is this in the standard?

• Determine coordinates of rotated rectangle

  I'm creating an utility application that should detect and report the coordinates of the corners of a transparent rectangle (alpha=0) within an image. So far, I've set up a system with Javascript + Canvas that displays the image and starts a floodfill-like operation when I click inside the transparent rectangle in the image. It correctly determines the bounding box of the floodfill operation and as such can provide me the correct coordinates. Here's my implementation so-far: http://www.scriptorama.nl/image/ (works in recent Firefox / Safari ). However, the bounding box approach breaks down then the transparent rectangle is rotated (CW or CCW) as the resulting bounding box no longer properly represents the proper width and height. I've tried to come up with a few alternatives to detect to corners, but have not been able to think up a proper solution. So, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might approach this so I can properly detect the coordinates of 4 corners of the rotated rectangle?

• Printing and exporting from Crystal Reports Viewer throws error

  I'm using the .net Crystal Reports viewer to display a report. This works properly, but when I click on the print option, and then click "OK" on the options popup, I get the following error: Access is denied. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Access is denied. And the same thing when I try to export. I'm running this on the Visual Studio development server, VS2008. What can I do to correct this?

After the Completion of my Api call I report a progress and In progress event of my Backgroundworker I get the contents from Db and assign it as a DataSource to my grid. I call same API in same backgroundworker. In the middle of processing my application crashes. But If I dont assign the dataSource in ProgressChanged my application doesnt crashes.

  I had created a new table named USERLOG with two fields from a previous VIEW. The table already consist of about 9000 records. The two fields taken from the VIEW, i.e. weblog_views consist of IP (consists of IP address), and WEB_LINK (consists of URL). This is the code I used, CREATE TABLE USERLOG AS SELECT C_IP, WEB_LINK FROM weblog_views; I want to add another column to this table called the USER_ID, which would consists of a sequence starting with 1 to 9000 records to create a unique id for each existing rows. I need help with this part. I'm using Oracle SQL Developer: ODMiner version 3.0.04. I tried using the AUTO-INCREMENT option, ALTER TABLE USERLOG ADD USER_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT; But I get an error with this, Error report: SQL Error: ORA-01735: invalid ALTER TABLE option 01735. 00000 - "invalid ALTER TABLE option" So, I would really appreciate any help that I can get!

  Hi, I am trying to parse a valid xaml file using the XamlXmlReader. It looks like it is 'skipping' some elements when when Read() is called. for example on the following xaml snippet: <UserControl.Resources> <Converters:AnyDbTypeToDisplayNameConverter x:Key="anyDbTypeToDisplayNameConverter" /> </UserControl.Resources> when reading I first get a XamlNodeType.StartObject on UserControl.Resources - makes sense then another XamlNodeType.StartObject on Converters - also cool. but then i do not get a XamlNodeType.EndObject on the Converters and immediately jump to the next line and does not report a XamlNodeType.StartObject. Any Idea if this is working as design ? looks like a bug to me

• Ways to make your WCF services compatible with non-.NET consumers

  I'm working on adding a WCF services layer to my existing .NET application. This layer will be hosted in IIS and will be consumed by a variety of UIs, at least one of which will not use Microsoft technologies. I can make a Web service in WCF that is consumed by my .NET application. However, I'm concerned about things that work in the .NET world but not with other technologies. For example, simply throwing an exception from my WCF service works fine in .NET. But according to this article, one should approach exception handling with fault contracts to ensure compatibility with non-.NET consumers. The author labels this lack of foresight as The Fallacy of the .NET-Only World. Does anyone have any high level suggestions or links to articles that cover interoperability between WCF and non-.NET consumers? I realize I'm potentially working against the YAGNI principle. I'm only really looking to avoid things that will be incredibly difficult to overcome later when the developers of the non-.NET consumer report problems to me.

  I am generating reports in HTML formats, and want to print them automatically using Qt (qt has a webkit based browser, and one can render its contents to a PDF file). I want to position the elements of the report depending on the target page size. For that i need to access the size of the paper (preferably in pixels). Since i am using webkit, it has all the latest html5 and css3 features. is there some api available to access printed page properties inside javascript. for example, would be nice to write: window.print_paper.width or window.print_paper.height Thank you in advance

• Why won't my control accept keyboard input?

  I've built a custom control that I'm trying to send input to. It will accept mouse input and report MouseDown, MouseMove and MouseUp correctly, but for whatever reason, it won't accept keyboard input. When I click on it, it doesn't receive focus, and any keys I press get interpreted by whatever control had the focus already. This is probably something really simple. The first place I thought to look was in the ControlStyle property, but the only thing I can see in the helpfile about keyboard input is csNoStdEvents, which disables it, and my control doesn't have that. So what do I need to do to make it so my control can receive input focus?

• Twitter widget stops page from rendering in IE 8, anybody know why?

  The widget works fine in Firefox but it completely stops the page from being rendered in IE8.
