  • Memory issues - Living vs. overall -> app is killed

    - by D33
I'm trying to check my applications memory issues in Instruments. When I load the application I play some sounds and show some animations in UIImageViews. To save some memory I load the sounds only when I need it and when I stop playing it I free it from the memory. problem 1: My application is using about 5.5MB of Living memory. BUT The Overall section is growing after start to 20MB and then it's slowly growing (about 100kB/sec). But responsible Library is OpenAL (OAL::Buffer), dyld (_dyld_start)-I am not sure what this really is, and some other stuff like ft_mem_qrealloc, CGFontStrikeSetValue, … problem 2: When the overall section breaks about 30MB, application crashes (is killed). According to the facts I already read about overall memory, it means then my all allocations and deallocation is about 30MB. But I don't really see the problem. When I need some sound for example I load it to the memory and when I don't need it anymore I release it. But that means when I load 1MB sound, this operation increase overall memory usage with 2MB. Am I right? And when I load 10 sounds my app crashes just because the fact my overall is too high even living is still low??? I am very confused about it. Could someone please help me clear it up? (I am on iOS 5 and using ARC) SOME CODE: creating the sound OpenAL: MYOpenALSound *sound = [[MyOpenALSound alloc] initWithSoundFile:filename willRepeat:NO]; if(!sound) return; [soundDictionary addObject:sound]; playing: [sound play]; dispatch_after(dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW, ((sound.duration * sound.pitch) + 0.1) * NSEC_PER_SEC), dispatch_get_current_queue(), ^{ [soundDictionary removeObjectForKey:[NSNumber numberWithInt:soundID]]; }); } creating the sound with AVAudioPlayer: [musics replaceObjectAtIndex:ID_MUSIC_MAP withObject:[[Music alloc] initWithFilename:@"mapMusic.mp3" andWillRepeat:YES]]; pom = [musics objectAtIndex:musicID]; [pom playMusic]; and stop and free it: [musics replaceObjectAtIndex:ID_MUSIC_MAP withObject:[NSNull null]]; AND IMAGE ANIMATIONS: I load images from big PNG file (this is realated also to my other topic : Memory warning - UIImageView and its animations) I have few UIImageViews and by time I'm setting animation arrays to play Animations... UIImage *source = [[UIImage alloc] initWithCGImage:[[UIImage imageNamed:@"imageSource.png"] CGImage]]; cutRect = CGRectMake(0*dimForImg.width,1*dimForImg.height,dimForImg.width,dimForImg.height); image1 = [[UIImage alloc] initWithCGImage:CGImageCreateWithImageInRect([source CGImage], cutRect)]; cutRect = CGRectMake(1*dimForImg.width,1*dimForImg.height,dimForImg.width,dimForImg.height); ... image12 = [[UIImage alloc] initWithCGImage:CGImageCreateWithImageInRect([source CGImage], cutRect)]; NSArray *images = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:image1, image2, image3, image4, image5, image6, image7, image8, image9, image10, image11, image12, image12, image12, nil]; and this array I just use simply like : myUIImageView.animationImages = images, ... duration -> startAnimating

i have two maven projects, the first one is a library and the other one use it to works properly, the both have to elvolve regardless each other, this is why i use two different project. But breakpoints on my library code doesn't work when i launch my app (the second application). This is how i include my library in the second project's POM (my IDE is eclipse and projects are in the same workspaces) <dependency> <groupId>com.mcamier</groupId> <artifactId>lazyEngine</artifactId> <version>0.0.1-SNAPSHOT</version> <scope>system</scope> <systemPath>${basedir}/../lazyEngine/target/lazyEngine-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar</systemPath> </dependency>

  • Precise explanation of JavaScript <-> DOM circular reference issue

    - by Joey Adams
One of the touted advantages of jQuery.data versus raw expando properties (arbitrary attributes you can assign to DOM nodes) is that jQuery.data is "safe from circular references and therefore free from memory leaks". An article from Google titled "Optimizing JavaScript code" goes into more detail: The most common memory leaks for web applications involve circular references between the JavaScript script engine and the browsers' C++ objects' implementing the DOM (e.g. between the JavaScript script engine and Internet Explorer's COM infrastructure, or between the JavaScript engine and Firefox XPCOM infrastructure). It lists two examples of circular reference patterns: DOM element → event handler → closure scope → DOM DOM element → via expando → intermediary object → DOM element However, if a reference cycle between a DOM node and a JavaScript object produces a memory leak, doesn't this mean that any non-trivial event handler (e.g. onclick) will produce such a leak? I don't see how it's even possible for an event handler to avoid a reference cycle, because the way I see it: The DOM element references the event handler. The event handler references the DOM (either directly or indirectly). In any case, it's almost impossible to avoid referencing window in any interesting event handler, short of writing a setInterval loop that reads actions from a global queue. Can someone provide a precise explanation of the JavaScript ↔ DOM circular reference problem? Things I'd like clarified: What browsers are effected? A comment in the jQuery source specifically mentions IE6-7, but the Google article suggests Firefox is also affected. Are expando properties and event handlers somehow different concerning memory leaks? Or are both of these code snippets susceptible to the same kind of memory leak? // Create an expando that references to its own element. var elem = document.getElementById('foo'); elem.myself = elem; // Create an event handler that references its own element. var elem = document.getElementById('foo'); elem.onclick = function() { elem.style.display = 'none'; }; If a page leaks memory due to a circular reference, does the leak persist until the entire browser application is closed, or is the memory freed when the window/tab is closed?

  • What languages, frameworks, and technologies have you used to implement document searching?

    - by Bill Brasky
I am at a new company and one of our goals is to implement a document search portal for our team and our clients. I am a bit worried that if we use an external service provider like Salesforce or some other ECM in the cloud there will be a lot of integration work in the future. From a client perspective, these documents will also exist in the same bucket as our structured content (stored in the DB, not a MS Word doc). If you have implemented document searching, what languages, frameworks, and technologies have you used? Do you have any failure stories? I don't have a problem using something out of the box, but I think it is important that we have control over the documents and the API to access them. I would like to use Rails if we go fully custom.

  • Effect of 'myObj = [[[[MyClass alloc] init] autorelease] retain];'?

    - by filipe
I've just downloaded the Facebook iOS SDK and I noticed that in the sample code that comes with the SDK whenever it creates an instance of the Facebook class it does it like this: _facebook = [[[[Facebook alloc] init] autorelease] retain]; where _facebook is a member variable of the calling object (i.e. not a local variable). Can anyone explain exactly what's the point of autoreleasing and then retaining it?

  • Why use a Rails-like deployment mechanism over 'git pull' for releasing?

    - by Chad Johnson
To release my centralized webapp, I COULD have a vhost pointed to some directory and then just do a 'git pull' when I want to release, updating the files. But Rails has a different deployment mechanism: it copies files to a subdirectory and then points a symlink ('current') to that new subdirectory. I understand that it probably more acceptable to do a Rails-like deployment because the release is built in some directory, and then the symlink is pointed to that directory, so this is much faster, and it's less likely that users would experience weird issues while a release is happening. Are there any other advantages to the Rails approach? Or, is a 'git pull' approach actually more widely accepted?

  • Using Apache Velocity with StringBuilders/CharSequences

    - by mindas
We are using Apache Velocity for dynamic templates. At the moment Velocity has following methods for evaluation/replacing: public static boolean evaluate(Context context, Writer writer, String logTag, Reader reader) public static boolean evaluate(Context context, Writer out, String logTag, String instring) We use these methods by providing StringWriter to write evaluation results. Our incoming data is coming in StringBuilder format so we use StringBuilder.toString and feed it as instring. The problem is that our templates are fairly large (can be megabytes, tens of Ms on rare cases), replacements occur very frequently and each replacement operation triples the amount of required memory (incoming data + StringBuilder.toString() which creates a new copy + outgoing data). I was wondering if there is a way to improve this. E.g. if I could find a way to provide a Reader and Writer on top of same StringBuilder instance that only uses extra memory for in/out differences, would that be a good approach? Has anybody done anything similar and could share any source for such a class? Or maybe there any better solutions to given problem?

  • Managing projects with cousin: How Projectlocker.com can help?

    - by mbadawi23
I'm about to go through a new experience with my cousin who is also a software engineer. We have few ideas that we like to turn into software applications. We are currently collaborating via email to record our ideas and thoughts. But to manage our little project and control source code and track our issues. Now my question is: How can I make use of the wiki and blog feature so that we don't have to write emails? It is nice to be able to document our work in a formating friendly environment.

  • Can get members, but not count of NSMutableArray

    - by Curyous
I'm filling an NSMutableArray from a CoreData call. I can get the first object, but when I try to get the count, the app crashes with Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. How can I get the count? Here's the relevant code - I've put a comment on the line where it crashes. - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; managedObjectContext = [[MySingleton sharedInstance] managedObjectContext]; if (managedObjectContext != nil) { charactersRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; charactersEntity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Character" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; [charactersEntity retain]; [charactersRequest setEntity:charactersEntity]; [charactersRequest retain]; NSError *error; characters = [[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:charactersRequest error:&error] mutableCopy]; if (characters == nil) { NSLog(@"Did not get results for characters: %@", error.localizedDescription); } else { [characters retain]; NSLog(@"Found some character(s)."); Character* character = (Character *)[characters objectAtIndex:0]; NSLog(@"Name of first one: %@", character.name); NSLog(@"Found %@ character(s).", characters.count); // Crashes on this line with - Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. } } } And previous declarations from the header file: @interface CrowdViewController : UITableViewController { NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; NSFetchRequest *charactersRequest; NSEntityDescription *charactersEntity; NSMutableArray *characters; } I'm a bit perplexed and would really appreciate finding out what is going on.

  • Objective-C: when does an assigned object get deallocated

    - by Stefan Klumpp
If I have a instance method and within this method I do something like this: NSString *peopleString = [peopleList componentsJoinedByString: @", "]; ... UILabel *likeLabel = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(16.0+6.0f, 4.0f, 252.0f, 12.0f)]; [likeLabel setText:peopleString]; [likeLabel setFont:[UIFont fontWithName:@"Arial" size:12]]; [likeRow addSubview:likeLabel]; [likeLabel release]; The componentsJoinedByString doesn't contain a new, copy or alloc, thus I don't have to release it. What I'm wondering though is, when my peopleString gets deallocated. Might it happen to early? Meaning, before I can set the text in my label. Should I better use a [[NSString alloc] initWithString:[peopleList componentsJoinedByString: @", "]]; and release it at the end of this method?

  • PHP: Over-writing session variables

    - by Tom
Hi, Question related to PHP memory-handling from someone not yet very experienced in PHP: If I set a PHP session variable of a particular name, and then set a session variable of the exact same name elsewhere (during the same session), is the original variable over-written, or does junk accumulate in the session? In other words, should I be destroying a previous session variable before creating a new one of the same name? Thank you.

  • Retain cycle on `self` with blocks

    - by Jonathan Sterling
I'm afraid this question is pretty basic, but I think it's relevant to a lot of Objective-C programmers who are getting into blocks. What I've heard is that since blocks capture local variables referenced within them as const copies, using self within a block can result in a retain cycle, should that block be copied. So, we are supposed to use __block to force the block to deal directly with self instead of having it copied. __block typeof(self) bself = self; [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [bself doSomething]; }]; instead of just [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [self doSomething]; }]; What I'd like to know is the following: if this is true, is there a way that I can avoid the ugliness (aside from using GC)?

  • How does your team handle support requests

    - by Skeep
Hi All, I have just taken over as manager at a company and at the moment they are very rigid in how they approach development. Everyone gets a list of what they are doing each week. My question is how does your company balance support with development and if an important support request comes in how is this processed without disturbing the flow of the developers? Lastly, do you use an software log support requests and development tasks. Thanks

  • Vim: multi-file editing - having different makes in different splits

    - by gmatt
I'm a recent vim convert (from fancy IDEs like eclipse.) I love the :make command in vim and use it extensively; however I also like to edit multiple projects (with separate makefiles.) So usually to edit more than one project I will do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp [suspend signal] pushd ../project2 vim project2.cpp and now I can switch between the two projects with ctrl+z i.e. suspend signal, and fg. When this becomes an issue is when I want to open one project in the context of another so I can do copy/pasting. So if instead in the above I do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp :vsp ../project2/project2.cpp I can edit both concurrently in the same vim process, however I can't effectively build one or the other with the :make command, it will only build project 1. Does anyone have some kind of scheme that gives them the best of both worlds: being able to edit concurrently while still being able to build multiple projects with the :make command all from the same vim process?

  • Tracking DB changes with Zend Framework?

    - by Chad Johnson
I am trying to decide between the Zend Framework and Ruby On Rails for my web application. If I go with ZF, I need the following: A way to incrementally track changes to my database, as with RoR's migration feature (001_something.sql, 002_something_else.sql). A place to put SQL for the next release of my software. At work in our custom PHP solution, we just have release.sql, which gets run, archived, and blanked out upon release. ZF has Zend_Db_Schema_Manager, which does the same thing, but I'm not interested as its not official, complete, or maintained. Is there an official mechanism that ZF provides for doing something similar to what I described? EDIT I ended up going with Rails. Nothing compares.

  • Effecient data structure design

    - by Sway
Hi there, I need to match a series of user inputed words against a large dictionary of words (to ensure the entered value exists). So if the user entered: "orange" it should match an entry "orange' in the dictionary. Now the catch is that the user can also enter a wildcard or series of wildcard characters like say "or__ge" which would also match "orange" The key requirements are: * this should be as fast as possible. * use the smallest amount of memory to achieve it. If the size of the word list was small I could use a string containing all the words and use regular expressions. however given that the word list could contain potentially hundreds of thousands of enteries I'm assuming this wouldn't work. So is some sort of 'tree' be the way to go for this...? Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be totally appreciated! Thanks in advance, Matt

  • iPhone crashing when presenting modal view controller

I'm totally stumped! The loading view is empty so there's definitely nothing going on in there that's causing the error. Is it something to do with launching 2 views modally in the same event loop or something? Thanks, Mike Edit: Very strange... I have modified it slightly so that the loading view is shown after a tiny delay, and this works fine! So it appears to be something within the same event loop! - (void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewDidAppear:animated]; // Show load [self performSelector:@selector(doit) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.1]; } - (void)doit { [self presentModalViewController:loader animated:YES]; }

  • I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++ with Visual Studio 2008) after a internet explo

    - by BHOdevelopper
Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.
