Any advice for dynamic music control?

I would like to be able to dynamically progress the score, and affect the volume levels of separate channels within the music. How could I do this?
From my experience with mod music (olden days Amiga music, Mod Tracker, Scream Tracker, Fast Tracker II, Impulse Tracker etc etc), I believe this is the best way to tackle the problem, to allow the music to move from one loop to another, without anything mixed down.
I want to do this in AS3, and am considering pulling apart Flod to make this happen
