• Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

  I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction? • Why would my router have different MAC addresses for IP and IPv6 transactions?

  Today I was using tcpdump and I noticed my computer was having IPv6 traffic with a particular MAC address that I could not match with an IP using nmap or arping. After looking at the tcpdump logs a little more closely, I figured out it was another MAC address my router was using but exclusively for IPv6 traffic. 22:49:01.936830 90:0d:cb:ff:31:91 (oui Unknown) > 33:33:00:00:00:01 (oui Unknown), ethertype IPv6 (0x86dd), length 158: fe80::920d:cbff:feff:3191 > ip6-allnodes: ICMP6, router advertisement, length 104 Why would a router offer a different MAC address for IPv6?

• How can I use a batch shortcut to open multiple Windows Explorer folders, and a Notepad file?

  I've recently built a computer with an SSD in it (my first) and am in the process of moving a select few of my Steam games to the SSD and symbolically linking them to where they're supposed to be on the main (mechanical) hard drive so that Steam doesn't throw a fit and I get maximum performance. To this end, I'm finding myself repeatedly navigating to both target folders to move the relevant files and opening a specific Notepad file to enter the relevant paths into a template I've got set up that I paste into the Windows command prompt to create the symlink. This is annoying. I've read up a little bit on batch shortcuts, and have a basic understanding on how to use one to open programs and files. However, I'm finding a lot of confusing suggestions on how to use batch shortcuts to open specific folders in Windows Explorer, and none of them deal with opening multiple folders at once. Any assistance on writing the shortcut would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Ganglia and how it communicates

  I'm a little confused about how Ganglia sends information around and have found conflicting information on the web. I would have thought that the gmond process would either send info to gmetad at a regular interval or gmetad would request info from the various instances of gmond. At least one online article states this is how it works but from what I understand this is incorrect. It appears that you configure all gmond processes to send their info to a central gmond process and gmetad will request info from that central gmond. Is that correct? In my case I have 6 servers sending their information to 1 central server. If I set gmetad to get it's information from the central server then I get information from all 6 servers, all good.. Their weird thing is that if I point gmetad to one of the 6 servers then I still get info from all 6 servers. How is it that server 1 in my cluster if getting stats from all the other servers?

• Backing up Initial and Running configurations for Nortel Baystack 325-24G

  I recently came across a Nortel Baystack 325-24G switch. This is the first time I've come across a Nortel device of any sort, so I am a little intimidated. My problem is that I have been trying to get the startup and running configurations via both the CLI and the Menus but its become quite apparent that it isn't like the Cisco Switches/Routers. I've searched online but have only found Configuration Guides by Avaya. Also I'd like to know - is there a way to take backups regularly (something like tftp)? Pardon me but I'm a n00b when it comes to routers and switches. Thanks in advance.. EDIT: Still havent found a way to get the running config via the CLI

• sudo displays typed password in bash script

  Hullo, I have a bash script that uses sudo a few times. There's a couple of strange points about it though. It asks me for my password a few seconds after I've already entered it for a previous command. The second time I enter my password, it's echoed to the display. Here's the relevant bits of the script. sudo service apache2 stop drush sql-dump --root="$SITE_DIR" --structure-tables-key=svn --ordered-dump | grep -iv 'dump completed on' | sudo tee "$DB_DIR/${SITE_NAME}.sql" > /dev/null sudo svn diff "$DB_DIR" | less sudo svn commit -m "$MESSAGE" "$DB_DIR" sudo service apache2 start The first password is to stop apache, and it works as expected. As mentioned, the sudo tee doesn't 'remember' that I have elevated privileges, asks for the password again, and echoes it to the screen. Given that tee is all about echoing to screen, I've played around a little with simple scripts which have | sudo tee, and they all work as expected. Ideas?! TIA Andy

• Keyboard with normal layout just without numpad?

  Do you know any keyboard that does not have a numpad and, at the same time, is not a compact keyboard? I type a lot and I enjoy using standard full sized keyboards. I am annoyed by the presence of the numpad. I've never used it; it just wastes desktop space! All I could find are (even more annoying) compact keyboards. Sadly those keyboards are so compact that cram the arrow keys and the page up/down keys in a very little space. So, does anyone know a keyboard with a normal layout but without the numpad?

  So with a little help I figured out how to setup these routes and I can set them in rc.local route add -net 208.82.236.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev ppp0 metric 1 route add -net 208.82.236.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0 metric 10 my question is being that the first route is ppp0 as soon as I disconnect the modem the route is dropped how do I maintain the route or make it permanent so that next time the modem connects it will follow the route.   I am trying to SSH from a NAS to a webserver using a public key.   Hi, i have one very slow notebook from year about 2000. On the computer is running icewm with firefox (in this times chromium for testing). My question is if it's good step to upgrade the system to Karmic Koala? I can't install another OS on that. It doesn't have CD-ROM, it can't boot from flash, or network. The new wanted state is little bit faster system for browsing web and copying photos to local NAS. I don't mention hardware configuration, becouse it's real speed is really deep below the paper parameters.

• How do I set up DNS for an intranet web site?

  I have a web site running on our local server, 'OBAMA'. In my hosts file on that server, I map engenxt.local to 127.0.0.1, so typing engenxt.local on that machine itself brings up the website. I would like other machines to access the site via domain name 'engenxt'. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server, where would I begin, where should I go, and where should I end? I know precious little about DNS, or rather precious nothing, but am a quick study, besides, that is why I'm asking how to do this here. Episode 2 When I run DNS as Ryan suggests, it says 'the server OBAMA is unavailable. Do I want to add it?' It adds it, and tells me to choose to 'Configure a DNS server' from the actions menu, but nearly all the actions in that menu are disabled.

• SharePoint 2010 Search - not search additional content sources

  I've got SP 2010 crawling a secondary intranet system that we'll run in parallel as part of a long running migration to SharePoint when it releases. Whilst it's crawling the pages without problem I can't see how to get the results to appear as part of the Quick Search results if the user does a search from the little search dialog box on the home page. Searches completed within a My Sites pages lists results from port the SharePoint installation and the external content source. Searches from the main search dialog only list results of SharePoint items. I tried adding the drop down option to select the site to search but this list only includes the name of the current site and doesn't offer an 'All Sites' scope option which I think would include the content. What am I doing wrong?

  Hi Now and then there is "news" about that the ip numbers will run out in X years, and we must change to tcp/ip v6... And even thou this crisis never really happens it has waken a question, how do you get started with tcp/ip v6? What can I do at home and is this a good or bad idea? Can you use IPv4 and IPv6 in the same cables in the same LAN, or do you need to physically separate them? Can you have some translation box so you can reach the "normal" internet from the IPv6 connected devices? (Just like a NAT-Router) Can someone please clarify the situation a little bit? Thanks Johan

I have a little question, I'm actually studing IT in France, and when looking on alternative on the very [...] very expensive Cisco equipments, I've found Juniper and DELL PowerConnect pretty attractive on features and price, but I rarely see something else than the classics Cisco/LinkSys, HP Procurve and Netgear.. Why it's so rare to find those switch ? They looks really great but... I've never seen any Juniper or Powerconnect... Why do enterprises stick with the expensive Cisco ? I've tried to find how to buy both, it's quite easy with PowerConnect, everything is on the DELL website, but it looks it's very hard to find Juniper equipments in France :( Thank you !

• Tablet pen loses pressure sensitivity after screensaver

  Tablet: Genius MousePen 8x6 System: Windows 7 64-bit The question says it all. When I first boot up my machine, the tablet works fine, with pressure sensitivity functionality. However, if I leave the machine long enough for the screensaver to start up, when I return, the tablet works just like a mouse, and does not respond to changes in pen pressure. Unplugging and replugging the device does not fix the problem. Disabling and enabling the device in device manager does not fix the problem. When I try to use the tablet config tool -before- screensaver, the pressure config works fine. It gives you a little area where you can draw to test out the pressure. When I try to use the same tool -after- screensaver, the moment I click on that drawing area, the config tool freezes.

• Bootstrapping in CloudFormation with Autoscale

  My CloudFormation template creates an autoscale group and bootstrap it with utility script /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init. When I remove the bootstrap part out of my template the, autoscale get created without any problem, but I add it the CloudFormation Stack fails and add line in /var/log/cloud-init.log : Error: AutoScalingGroupName does not specify any metadata The line above appens right after the following command : /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init --verbose --configsets orderedConfig --region us-east-1 --stack AS15 --resource AutoScalingGroupName --access-key XXXXXXXXXXXXX --secret-key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Digging a little bit deeper, in cfn-init I added the following lines the point where it exit: from pprint import pprint pprint(vars(detail)) and I get the following trace when running the previous cfn-init command : {'_description': None, '_lastUpdated': datetime.datetime(2012, 7, 12, 14, 52, 42), '_logicalResourceId': u'AutoScalingGroupName', '_metadata': None, '_physicalResourceId': u'AS15-AutoScalingGroupName-HNPOXXXXXXXX', '_resourceStatus': u'CREATE_COMPLETE', '_resourceStatusReason': None, '_resourceType': u'AWS::AutoScaling::AutoScalingGroup', '_stackId': u'arn:aws:cloudformation:us-east-1:XXXXXXXXXXXXX:stack/AS15/XXXXXXXX-cc30-11e1-XXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX', '_stackName': u'AS15'} As you can see, the metadata field is empty and that's the reason why it fails to create the stack. • How to convert PowerPoint presentations into a Kindle/E-reader friendly form?

  I have a lot of documents in .ppt and .pptx (blame the co-workers). I would like to read them on way home or elsewhere... when I have a little time to catch up with things. One thing I could do with the documents is cutting them together into one file. But saving that one even if a smaller version of PDF (according to Office 2010) results in a huge file. And PDF is hardly readable on a Kindle. I would need something .epub free, easy-on-the-device way. Is there such a thing? (Manually I could copy all the images down into native text and whatnot and create new presentations, save those, convert them. But that would just take a lot of time.)

• Quiet Sound while recording using the "Stereo Mix" option on Windows XP.

  I'm trying to record some of my work, and the video capture program I'm using works fine. It's HyperCam2, and since it's not really professional, I don't care about that little thing in the corner. Anyways, If I check the record sound option and put it on the highest quality, and I want it to record the sounds playing from my computer, I have it record the "Stereo Mix" setting. However, after a quick test, I saw that even though my computer was at max volume, the recorded sound was very quiet, almost inaudible. Thinking it was just HyperCam, I downloaded Audacity, and only met similar results. While I'm not entirely savvy with hardware, I BELIEVE this to be my soundcard: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio

• what software will rip a CD to flac files in one step?

  I'm using EAC to rip files to FLAC. Seems fine. But for a large amount of CDs (200 or so) the process is a little labor intensive. There's 4 or 5 clicks in there that seem extraneous -- EAC seems to want to rip the CD to a set of WAV files then (after all those files are ripped) I have to select "Process WAV files" (I'd get it exact, but EAC is occupied right now). I'd like to send all of it to FLAC files in just a few steps: get cddb info, select art, rip. Is there a way to do this with EAC that I'm missing? Haven't been able to find anything on the web that explains this. Is there a better program for this?

  Hi all. Does anyone know of a hosted version of Yahoo! Answers (or Stackoverflow/Superuser) that I could integrate with my site? I know that there are some open-source implementations (see http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2267/stack-overflow-clones?page=1&tab=votes#tab-top) but I'd rather have some hosted if possible. I know there is http://stackexchange.com/ as well, but I really want some tight integration with the rest of my site. Failing that, has anyone got any experience with the open source versions? • Group Policy processing and autologon on Windows 7

  I'm trying to accomplish a few things via Group Policy on Windows 7. Software Installation, map drives, map printer, etc. I've got these computers set to autologon. The problem I'm running into is that the computers logon before DHCP has done its thing. Therefore, they don't apply any group policies properly. How do I fix this? I've already set a policy to "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon". I've read up a bit and this doesn't actually mean that it waits for DHCP. So it's a little pointless. Anything that would delay logon would work. Or if I can somehow make the computer wait for DHCP.

My most expensive machine is a gaming rig complete with an ATI Radeon HD4850, Wolfdale 3.0 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 500 Gb hard drive, Antec 900 computer case, the works. I also have a 2-monitor set up. I'd have to say this thing has cost me a little more than a grand at this point, and I'd put the total value of the components at roughly $1300. • Is opening ports in the firewall bad?

  From what little I know about networking, opening ports lets external data get sent in. But how that data is handled is entirely up to the applications running on my machine. So if I'm not running any malicious applications, there should be nothing wrong with disabling the firewall, right? Also, how do applications work when ports aren't forwarded? For example, I need to forward port TCP 6112 to host Blizzard games, but I've heard that HTTP uses port 80, but I haven't forwarded that port, yet Firefox still works. Btw I'm using Windows Vista.

• Changing Recovery Model in Replicated Database

  I now am the proud owner of two servers that replicate with each other. I had nothing to do with the install, but (of course), now i have to support the databases. Both databases are in the Simple recovery model, but the users want to ensure as little data loss as possible so I'm thinking that I should change the recovery model over to full and start doing transaction log backups. I wasn't planning on backing up the subscribing database, only the publisher. Is this the right plan? Do I need to switch both the Subscriber and and the publisher to Full, or can I leave the subscriber in Simple, but have the Publisher in Full? When I change the recovery model in one (or both) do the databases need to be offline? Thanks

• How can I make the iTunes podcast count ignore selected podcasts?

  Hi all, Until recently I have only listened to news type podcasts with people talking, like TWiT and Security Now. I also like music, so decided to subscribe to some other music related podcasts, however I don't want these to appear in my podcasts count in iTunes on the left hand side. I downloaded a load of old ones from the music related podcasts, and now I can't see at a glance how many news podcasts I have to listen to. I know it sounds really picky, but if it can be done, I would be a little bit happier. Of course I did some googling, but turned up a blank. Would guess it needs some form of plugin. Using the latest version of iTunes at the time of posting. Thanks in advance.
