  • Splitting string to integer from single-line user input?

    - by pootzko
I just started learning some ruby, and I want to do something like this: print "Insert two numbers: " a, b = gets.split(" ") but I want to make a and b to be integers at the same time (in the same line).. If I add .to_i to the second line (before or after split(" ")), it doesn't work... so, how should I approach this? mapping, splitting, slicing? ok, I know I could use scanf, but other than scanf, how would I do this? sorry for such a noobish question, but I just couldn't find a good enough answer only googling...

  • Strange hex formatting in NSString

    - by pseudopeach
Try this: unsigned long long int N; = 23229877463LL; NSString* s = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"dec:%qi, hex:%qX",N,N]; NSLog(@"output: %@",s); output: dec:23229877460, hex:689BCCD400000005 What's up with the 00000005??? In mySQL, hex(23229877460) = 5689BCCD4. Also, every other language seems to do this correctly. A 16 digit long hex is like 4 gazillion (16^16), right? How can I get objective-c to format hex numbers that other languages can understand?

  • Structure of open source project's repository

    - by hokkaido
I'm in the beginning of starting a small open source project. When cloning the main repository one gets a complete build environment with all the libraries and all the tools needed to make an official installer file, with correct version numbers. I like the fact that anyone who wants to contribute can clone the repository and get started with anything they want. But I'm thinking this makes it to easy for Evil People to create malicious installers and release into the wild. How should it be structured? What do you recommend including in the repository, versus keeping on the build server only?

  • How to setup Math program

    - by Miles
I'm needing to write a program (C#) that will allow the user to create generic formulas with variables and numbers. For example: D = A + (A - C / X)(7.8 - 6.6) F = E + (E - C / X)(7.8 - 6.6) FinalResult = (A + D)(0.9) + (E + F)(0.32) + B(0.1) + .023 where all variables would mean for me to go to a database and look something up based on values and return a number in its place. So A would be 2.12 for example (and the same for C and E) Whats the best way to structure this program? How would I make my program read these formulas? I've seen a little bit of the MathML but not sure how to get that started (or an example of it)

  • rearranging a list of months

    - by MacUsers
How can I list the numbers 01 to 12 (one for each of the 12 months) in such a way so that the current month always comes last where the oldest one is first. In other words, if the number is grater than the current month, it's from the previous year. e.g. 02 is Feb, 2011 (the current month right now), 03 is March, 2010 and 09 is Sep, 2010 but 01 is Jan, 2011. In this case, I'd like to have [09, 03, 01, 02]. This is what I'm doing to determine the year: for inFile in os.listdir('.'): if inFile.isdigit(): month = months[int(inFile)] if int(inFile) <= int(strftime("%m")): year = strftime("%Y") else: year = int(strftime("%Y"))-1 mnYear = month + ", " + str(year) I don't have a clue what to do next. What should I do here?

  • Resize Report to set on one page by wide

    - by adopilot
Is there a possibility to set size of Report to fit on one page pragmatically. In excel there is option for page Scaling where We can set how many pages by tall and by wide is going to be printed . Does exists something analog in SSRS2008 ? I am using Sql Report Server 2008 and Ill try to do that by exporting report to excel and after that to set numbers of pages using ASP and C#. But the bad thing that I do not have office system installed on my server, and If I deploy code over visual studio project for Excel worksheet I am afraid that is not going to work on my server. Subquestion Are there any .NET library for Excel which implement the needed function for page scaling that can work without Office installed on target server.

  • How to create unique user key

    - by Grayson Mitchell
Scenario: I have a fairly generic table (Data), that has an identity column. The data in this table is grouped (lets say by city). The users need an identifier in order for printing on paper forms, etc. The users can only access their cites data, so if they use the identity column for this purpose they will see odd numbers (e.g. a 'New York' user might see 1,37,2028... as the listed keys. Idealy they would see 1,2,3... (or something similar) The problem of course is concurrency, this being a web application you can't just have something like: UserId = Select Count(*)+1 from Data Where City='New York' Has anyone come up with any cunning ways around this problem?

  • How to very efficiently assign lat/long to city boundary described by shape ?

    - by watcherFR
I have a huge shapefile of 36.000 non-overlapping polygones (city boundaries). I want to easily determine the polygone into which a given lat/long falls. What would the best way given that it must be extremely computationaly efficient ? I was thinking of creating a lookup table (tilex,tiley,polygone_id) where tilex and tiley are tile identifiers at zoom levels 21 or 22. Yes, the lack of precision of using tile numbers and a planar projection is acceptable in my application. I would rather not use postgres's GIS extension and am fine with a program that will run for 2 days to generate all the INSERT statements.

  • Javascript find if english alphabets only

    - by Alec Smart
Hello, Am trying to find some text only if it contains english letters and numbers using Javascript/jQuery. Am wondering what is the most efficient way to do this? Since there could be thousands of words, it should be as fast as possible and I don't want to use regex. var names[0] = 'test'; var names[1] = '???'; var names[2] = '??????'; for (i=0;i<names.length;i++) { if (names[i] == ENGLISHMATCHCODEHERE) { // do something here } } Thank you for your time.

  • Partition a rectangle into near-squares of given areas

    - by Marko Dumic
I have a set of N positive numbers, and a rectangle of dimensions X and Y that I need to partition it in N smaller rectangles such that: the surface area of each smaller rectangle is proportional to it's corresponding number in given set all space of big rectangle is occupied and there is no leftover space between smaller rectangles each small rectangle should be shaped as close to square as feasible the execution time should be reasonably small I need directions on this. Do you know of such algorithm described on the web? Do you have any ideas (pseudo-code is fine)? Thanks.

  • JavaScript: how to use data but to hide it so as it cannot be reused

    - by loukote
Hi all. I've some data that i'd like to publish just on one website, ie. it should not be reused on other websites. The data is a set of numbers that change every day, our journalists work to get hard gather it. Is there any way to hide, crypt, etc. the data in a way that it cannot be reused by others? But to show it in a graph in the same time? I found the ASCII to HEX tool that could be used for (http://utenti.multimania.it/ascii2hex/). I wonder if you can suggest other ways. (Even if I have to completely change the strategy.) Many thanks!

  • How to test a regex password in Python?

    - by jCuga
Using a regex in Python, how can I verify that a user's password is: At least 8 characters Must be restricted to, though does not specifically require any of: uppercase letters: A-Z lowercase letters: a-z numbers: 0-9 any of the special characters: @#$%^&+= Note, all the letter/number/special chars are optional. I only want to verify that the password is at least 8 chars in length and is restricted to a letter/number/special char. It's up to the user to pick a stronger / weaker password if they so choose. So far what I have is: import re pattern = "^.*(?=.{8,})(?=.*\d)(?=.*[a-z])(?=.*[A-Z])(?=.*[@#$%^&+=]).*$" password = raw_input("Enter string to test: ") result = re.findall(pattern, password) if (result): print "Valid password" else: print "Password not valid"

  • c++ - QListWidget

    - by user1889459
I created a working QListWidget with multiple items, but I can't figure out how to make it user-friendly. It looks like this: 1000 1001 1002 ... But I want it to look like this, where firt 4 numbers have a meaning, while all the rest info is just for user. 1000 Name LastName and some other helpful info 1001 tom jeff smallville 1002 ming vase, 1992 ... For example, this line fotoId = ui->devices->currentItem()->text().toInt(); should give me same result in both cases.

  • Hard drive randomly sppeeding up

    - by Glenn Taylor
Having a weird issue with my hard drive. Running Windows 7 with an I5 processor. At random times the hard drive will start running at top speed and gradually return to normal over the next two minutes or so. Going to Resource Monitor it shows a variety of things with high read or write numbers. Log files NTFS volume log, Windows prefetch, System/user/appdata, and Program data Norton are the usual top ones listed. This just started about three months ago although the computer is about 3 years old. Have run in safe mode with internet over the weekend going to all of my usual sites with no such speed up. Question 1 - what can be causing this? Question 2 - how can I find out where data is being sent(especially if over the net)? Thank you.

  • problem reading a csv file in python

    - by Hossein
Hi, I am trying to read a very simple but somehow large(800Mb) csv file using the csv library in python. The delimiter is a single tab and each line consists of some numbers. Each line is a record, and I have 20681 rows in my file. I had some problems during my calculations using this file,it always stops at a certain row. I got suspicious about the number of rows in the file.I used the code below to count the number of row in this file: tfdf_Reader = csv.reader(open('v2-host_tfdf_en.txt'),delimiter=' ') c = 0 for row in tfdf_Reader: c = c + 1 print c To my surprise c is printed with the value of 61722!!! Why is this happening? What am I doing wrong?

  • Mobile web development - how to?

    - by Adam Kiss
Hello, I would like to start developing mobile-friendly versions of websites for my clients, however, I am baffled with options and google search wasn't very helpful - there is so many options and opinions, I've been reading for few days now and still have no idea how to start. What's your opinion/experience about/with it? My main points: mobile devices supported (in order of relevance): iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, Blackberry, Droid powered mobiles, other phone friendly numbers, phone friendly emails contact/register form working on each (or the most possible) devices listed jQTouch seems superb (simple, quick, working), I'm not sure about it on blackberry/droid and I don't want to create 6 web versions for each mobile device - Makes even less sense if you consider, that I'm starting with small web (6-10 pages, 1 contact form, 3 register forms) to play with. Thank you

  • How to store data to Excel from DataSet without going cell-by-cell?

    - by Jason Barnwell
Duplicate of: What’s the simplest way to import a System.Data.DataSet into Excel? Using c# under VS2008, we can create an excel app, workbook, and then worksheet fine by doing this: Application excelApp = new Application(); Workbook excelWb = excelApp.Workbooks.Add(template); Worksheet excelWs = (Worksheet)this.Application.ActiveSheet; Then we can access each cell by "excelWs.Cells[i,j]" and write/save without problems. However with large numbers of rows/columns, we are expecting a loss in efficiency. Is there a way to "data bind" from a DataSet object into the worksheet without using the cell-by-cell approach? Most of the methods we have seen at some point revert to the cell-by-cell approach. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Unique number identifier generation

    - by xwrs
I have to create logic for generation unique number identifier for records in database. id, generated in database is a separate column. At this moment, when user calls "create record" action, I save new record, get its database id, generate record number using this id, then put it to the edit form. Using this way means that all entity fields should be nullable to save record to database. I don't like this way. I know that should be better way. Is there a better practice to generate unique number identifier? What is possibility of generating non-unique random numbers? Thank you

  • Can a real number "cover" all integers within its range?

    - by macias
Is there a guarantee that a real number (float, double, etc) can "cover" all integers within its range? By cover I mean, that for every integer within its range there is such real number that this equality holds: real == int Or in another example, let's say I have the biggest real number which is smaller than given integer. When I add "epsilon" will I get this number equal to given integer or bigger than integer? (I know that among real numbers you should not write comparisons as == for equality, I am simply asking for better understanding subject, not for coding comparisons.)

  • Generating pagination links

    - by alpheus
I am trying to implement a paging system that displays nearby page numbers as well as pages at each extreme. For example, if the user is on page 20 of 40, the following links should be displayed: 1, 2 ... 18, 19, [20], 21, 22 ... 39, 40. The solution would be similar to the one described here: http://90poe.com/alex-lee-on-bell-curve-pagination I have seen code to do this in PHP, but not in ASP.net (ideally I am looking for C# code). If anyone has done anything like this previously, it would be very helpful to see your code.

  • Convert hex to decimal keeping fractional part in Lua

    - by Zack Mulgrew
    Lua's tonumber function is nice but can only convert unsigned integers unless they are base 10. I have a situation where I have numbers like 01.4C that I would like to convert to decimal. I have a crummy solution: function split(str, pat) local t = {} local fpat = "(.-)" .. pat local last_end = 1 local s, e, cap = str:find(fpat, 1) while s do if s ~= 1 or cap ~= "" then table.insert(t,cap) end last_end = e+1 s, e, cap = str:find(fpat, last_end) end if last_end <= #str then cap = str:sub(last_end) table.insert(t, cap) end return t end -- taken from http://lua-users.org/wiki/SplitJoin function hex2dec(hexnum) local parts = split(hexnum, "[\.]") local sigpart = parts[1] local decpart = parts[2] sigpart = tonumber(sigpart, 16) decpart = tonumber(decpart, 16) / 256 return sigpart + decpart end print(hex2dec("01.4C")) -- output: 1.296875 I'd be interested in a better solution for this if there is one.

  • How to create and Expression tree to do the same as "StartsWith"

    - by Jonathan
Hi to all. Currently, I have this method to compare two numbers Private Function ETForGreaterThan(ByVal query As IQueryable(Of T), ByVal propertyValue As Object, ByVal propertyInfo As PropertyInfo) As IQueryable(Of T) Dim e As ParameterExpression = Expression.Parameter(GetType(T), "e") Dim m As MemberExpression = Expression.MakeMemberAccess(e, propertyInfo) Dim c As ConstantExpression = Expression.Constant(propertyValue, propertyValue.GetType()) Dim b As BinaryExpression = Expression.GreaterThan(m, c) Dim lambda As Expression(Of Func(Of T, Boolean)) = Expression.Lambda(Of Func(Of T, Boolean))(b, e) Return query.Where(lambda) End Function It works fine and is consumed in this way query = ETForGreaterThan(query, Value, propertyInfo) As you can see, I give it an IQueryable collection and it add a where clause to it, base on a property and a value. Y can construct Lessthan, LessOrEqualThan etc equivalents as Expression has this operators predefined. ¿How can I transform this code to do the same with strings? Expression don't give me a predefined operator like "contains" or "startwith" and I'm really noob with Expression trees. Thanks, and please Post your answer in C#/VB. Choose the one that make you feel more confortable.

  • Fastest algorithm to check if a number is pandigital?

    - by medopal
Pandigital number is a number that contains the digits 1..number length. For example 123, 4312 and 967412385. I have solved many Project Euler problems, but the Pandigital problems always exceed the one minute rule. This is my pandigital function: private boolean isPandigital(int n){ Set<Character> set= new TreeSet<Character>(); String string = n+""; for (char c:string.toCharArray()){ if (c=='0') return false; set.add(c); } return set.size()==string.length(); } Create your own function and test it with this method int pans=0; for (int i=123456789;i<=123987654;i++){ if (isPandigital(i)){ pans++; } } Using this loop, you should get 720 pandigital numbers. My average time was 500 millisecond. I'm using Java, but the question is open to any language.

  • Filtering Data in a Text File with Python

    - by YAS
I'm new to Python (like Zygote new), and it's just to supplement another program but what I need is I have a text file that's a group of items for a game and it is formatted so: [1] Name=Blah Faction=Blahdiddly Cost=1000 [2] Name=Meh Faction=MehMeh Cost=2000 [3] Name=Lollypop Faction=Blahdiddly Cost=100 And I need to be able to find out what groups (the numbers in brackets) have matching values. So if I search Faction=Blahdiddly Group 1 & 3 will come up. I unfortunately have NO idea how to do this. Can anyone help?
