  • Using Gem Dependencies if a server is 2.0 instead of 2.1

    At work for internal Rails applications, the server is running Rails 2.0.4 and Ruby 1.86. As far as I know, that's not going to change anytime soon and I have no control over it. I was going to try and test this out between a couple of computers and was curious if anyone knew what would happen. Being the server is on 2.0.4, I'd like to build Rails 2.3.5 applications for that server if at all possible. From what I understand so far, it won't be a problem if I freeze gems and upack dependancies. Does that sound right? Also, the internal work server has no gems beyond what Rails installs. What I'm wondering is, if I can successfully run a 2.3.5 application on the 2.0.4 server, can I also use extra gems and unpack those to use even though the server doesn't have them? I know that it was version 2.1 that introduced Gem Dependencies so would a 2.3.5 Rails app running on a 2.0.4 server be able to use required gems that are unpacked into an application? One of the worst things with this situation is even if the above stuff works, the server being on 1.86 would exclude me from using a lot of really cool gems that require Ruby 1.87 (like Formtastic).   • [RAILS] Why is ssl_requirement clearing the Flash? (Chrome Mac)

    I am using ssl_requirement and since setting it up, my application's Flash messages are disappearing. I've modified the plugin slightly as accounts can optionally have a domain mapped to their account. In that case the non-ssl areas of the site should use the mapped domain, whereas the ssl areas should use the subdomain: def ensure_proper_protocol return true if ssl_allowed? if ssl_required? && !request.ssl? redirect_to "https://#{@account.subdomain}." + APP_CONF[:domain] + request.request_uri flash.keep return false elsif request.ssl? && !ssl_required? redirect_to "http://#{@account.sub_or_mapped_domain}" + request.request_uri flash.keep return false end end The application is broadly split into a website (front end) and an admin (back end). ALL of the admin area uses SSL so in the AdminController I have overwritten ssl_required? with: protected def ssl_required? return false if RAILS_ENV == "test" || RAILS_ENV == "development" true end Interestingly, Flash messages work fine in the development environment, where I am bypassing requiring SSL, but in my production environment where SSL is required, all Flash are gone. Any ideas? EDIT I've done some further testing and can add that this problem is ONLY occurring in Chrome on the Mac. Other Mac browsers and Chrome on windows are displaying the Flash messages as expected. This may be a bug with Chrome on the Mac then...?

  • Rails 2.3.5: How does one add an error when it doesn't make sense to put it in a validation?

    I recently was trying to add errors.add_to_base code in the middle of some model logic and was wondering why it wasn't showing up in my view that was iterating over all errors. I then ran across this e-mail which explains why: http://groups.google.com/group/rubyonrails-talk/browse_thread/thread/e045ec1dead1ff06?pli=1 The question is then, how does one add errors with add_to_base if it doesn't make sense to put them into a validate method? I have some complex logic. The model needs to talk to a has_many relationship which has its own relationships that go through a myriad of conditionals to figure out if a request makes sense. It's nothing that can be tied to a validate method easily. How does one add errors then accordingly?

  • Rails: Duplicate functionality across controllers? A humble plea.

    So I'm working with authlogic, and I'm trying to duplicate the login functionality to the welcome page, so that you can log in by restful url or by just going to the main page. No, I don't know if we'll keep that feature, but I want to test it out anyway. Here's the error message: RuntimeError in Welcome#index Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4 -- if you really wanted the id of nil, use object_id The code is below. Basically, what's happening is the index view (the first code snippet) is sending the information from the form to the create method of user_sessions controller. At this point, in theory, it create should just pick up, but it doesn't. PLEASE help. Please. I've been doing this for about 8 hours. I checked Google. I checked IRC. I checked every book I could find.   • In Rails, how to respect :scope when using validates_uniqueness_of in an embedded object form?

    I have a Book model, which has_many Chapters (which belong_to a Book). I want to ensure uniqueness of Chapter titles, but only within the scope of a single book. The catch is that the form for creating chapters is embedded in the Book model's form (The Book model accepts_nested_attributes_for :chapters). Within the Chapter model: validates_uniqueness_of( :chapter_title, :scope = :book_id, :case_sensitive = false, :message = "No book can have multiple chapters with the same title.") However, when I submit the Book creation form (which also includes multiple embedded Chapter forms), if the chapter title exists in another chapter for a different book, I fail the validation test. Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "Introduction"), Chapter.new(:title => "How to build things") => Book 1 successfully created Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "Introduction"), Chapter.new(:title => "Destroy things") => Book 2 fails to validate second_book = Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "A temporary Introduction title"), Chapter.new(:title => "Destroy things") => Book 2 succesfully created second_book.chapters[0].title= "Introduction" => success second_book.chapters.save => success second_book.save => success Can anyone shed some light on how to do this? (When 'design' or 'photo' is active 'products' should be highlighted too.) I'm using this for child and simple urls: <li class="<%= current_page?(:action => 'design') %>"> <%= link_to_unless_current 'Design', :design %> </li> For 'products' checking should be like: <%= current_page?(:action => 'products') || current_page?(:action => 'design') %> || current_page?(:action => 'photo') %> But triple || is not right, and it's become complicated. I saw a helper, like this one: def current(childs) if current_page?(:action => childs) @container = "active" else @container = "inactive" end end Which is used by: <%= current(:photo) %> So, how to put all my 3 checks for 'products', 'design', 'photo' in one helper? And make possible to use something like <%= current(:products, :design, :photo) %>

  • Rails 3 - raw/html_safe not working in some cases?

    I'm having difficulties with output not being encoded even though I'm using raw or html_safe.   • Rails - Create if record doesn't exist or else update.....Whats Best way to do this?

    Hi, I have a create statement for some models but its creating a record within a join table regardless if the record exist. Here is what my code looks like. @user = User.find(current_user) @event = Event.find(params[:id]) for interest in @event.interests @user.choices.create(:interest => interest, :score => 4) end The problem is it creates records no matter what. I would like it to create a record if it doesnt exist, if a record does exist I would just to it to take the attribute of the found record and add or subtract 1. So, I've been looking around and I see something called find_or_create_by. My question is what happens if it finds? Preferably if it finds,I would like to take the current :score attribute and +1. SO is it possible to find or create by id? I'm not sure what attribute I would find by since the model I'm looking at is a join model which only had id foreign keys and the score attribute. I tried @user.choices.find_or_create_by_user(:user => @user.id, :interest => interest, :score => 4) but got "undefined method `find_by_user'".....ANy ideas or help?

    I have this: app/modules/grid_module.rb app/modules/grid.html.haml then in my view: app/views/layouts/default.html.haml I want to make a new instance of the grid_module and render it content. Its content is into the grid.html.haml and this file can only use the instance vars set in the grid_module.rb is this possible to do? (the grid name is just an example, it must be more flexible, to load the html.haml file based on the .rb class) the grid_module must has access to models too* like this: User.find_by_id(4) thanks for help

  • Rails - Beginner wants feedback on how they've modeled their app and how to do it better.

    I think the way I've modelled my app is a bit fishy and i need to rejig things, im just not sure how. I've already re-jigged and refactored before. It took a long time ( I'm a beginner ) and I'm hesitant to it again in case i head off in the wrong direction again. Basic Idea, user can submit an answer, another user can mark it correct or incorrect. If incorrect they have to write the correct answer. Users can view their and everybody else's correct and incorrect answers. So I did it this way class Answer has_one: correction end class Correction belongs_to :answer end when a user marks an answer as correct, I set checked_at:DateTime and checked_by_id:integer on the Answer object to keep track of who checked the answer and when. For incorrect answers I create a correction object which holds the correct answer and again checked_by and checked_at details. I don't like this because I have checked_by and checked_at in both models. It just doesn't sit right. Possible solutions are: Create a third model such as VerifiedAnswer and move the checked_by/at attributes to that. It will handle the situtation where an answer is marked correct. Or are these models thin enough (they dont have any other attributes) that I can just have one model ( Answer ) that has all the attributes to store all this information?

Here is what I tried to do and conceptually what I'd like to do: assign the route based on the class name that has been passed to the :event from the :partial. What I did was create what the actual url should be. The 'text' of it is correct, but doesn't seem to recognize it as a named route. <% url = "skip_contact_#{event.class.name.tableize.singularize}_url" % <%= link_to_remote "Skip #{url} Remote", :url = skip_contact_email_url(contact_event, event), :update = "update-area-#{contact_event.id}-#{event.id}" % ' My challenge: skip_contact_email_url only works when the event refers to an email. In other words, if he hasn't been created yet). If the user's email is blank, send him to enter_email_path (where the user can enter his email). Now I want to add another if statement that flashes an error if the email had been already taken, and redirects the user to the root_path I'm not very sure how to do this, Any suggestions? (and where to put that if statement?)

    Let's say I have a User model, with a facebook_uid field corresponding to the user's facebook id. I want to allow the user to unlink his facebook account. Do do so, I need to set this attribute to nil. I currently see 2 ways of doing this First way : create a custom action and link to it # app/controllers/users_controller.rb def unlink_facebook_account @user = User.find params[:id] # Authorization checks go here @user.facebook_uid = nil @user.save # Redirection go here end # config/routes.rb ressources :users do get 'unlink_fb', :on => :member, :as => unlink_fb end # in a view = link_to "Unlink your facebook account", unlink_fb_path(@user) Second way : create a form to the existing update action # app/views/user/_unlink_fb_form.html.haml = form_for @user, :method => "post" do |f| = f.hidden_field :facebook_uid, :value => nil = f.submit "Unlink Facebook account" I'm not a big fan of either way. In the first one, I have to add a new action for something that the update controller already can do. In the second one, I cannot set the facebook_uid to nil without customizing the update action, and I cannot have a link instead of a button without adding some javascript. Still, what would you recommend as the best and most elegant solution for this context? Did I miss a third alternative?

  • Ruby (with Rails) convert a string of time into seconds?

    So, I've got a string of time... something along the lines of '4 hours' '48 hours' '3 days' '15 minutes' I would like to convert those all into seconds. For '4 hours', this works fine Time.parse('4 hours').to_i - Time.prase('0 hours').to_i => 14400 # 4 hours in seconds, yay However, this doesn't work for 48 hours (outside of range error). It also does not work for 3 days (no information error), etc. Is there a simple way to convert these strings into seconds?

    I'd like to store emails in a separate table and allow users to save multiple emails and log in with any of them. I'd also like to store passwords in a different table. How can I configure Devise to store authentication info elsewhere? Worst case scenario, if I just have to hack into it, is there a generator to just port everything over to the app?   • To use an api or store a large dataset in a rails app?

    Hi all- I am working on a site that has the potential to need a LOT of space. Basically we hope to have every video game every created stored in a database along with an image of the cover. There are some api's out there that might be able to help, like GiantBomb's (www.giantbomb.com). We are trying to decide whether to store the data locally and if so where to find that comprehensive a list, or make calls to the api on demand. The problem with the latter is likely latency and also downtime problems. Assuming we want to store it locally here are the questions: 1) Where can we find this kind of data (yes, I looked on google, and no I couldnt find anything:)) 2) What is the most efficient way to encode and store the images?
