• Ideas for reducing storage needs and/or costs (lots of images)

  Hi, I'm the webmaster for a small social network and have noticed that images uploaded by users are taking a big portion of the capacity available. These are mostly JPEGs. What solutions could I apply to reduce storage needs? Is there a way to reduce the size of images without affecting quality too much? Is there a service out there that could be used to store static files at a cheaper price (< 1GB/0.04 eurocents)? Edit: Updated the question.

• How to elevate engineering culture at large corporations?

  One thing I have realized working at a large corporation is that it doesn't matter how smart you are because if everyone else doesn't see the value in what you are doing then you are not going to get very far. It's much harder to convince 1000 people that a certain part of the software stack should be in groovy than it is to convince 10 people of the same thing. I'm curious how people go about elevating the engineering culture at large corporations because I've been running into walls left and right and I would like to be more proactive about how I go about it. I have been advocating tech talks and tech demos along with code reviews as potential solutions. Do people have other suggestions? Note that 1000 people and groovy are just representative examples. I am not married to groovy or any other language and 1000 people is meant to indicate large scale and how to go about teaching a large group of people about best practices and engineering principles in general.

• Tool to search for packages whose installed version does not match any version from a repository?

  I just upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and as expected, all my PPAs were disabled. I have re-enabled most of the ones that I want, but I would like to get a list of all packages that I installed from PPAs that I no longer have enabled. I feel that the best way to do this would be to search for all packages where the currently installed version of that package does not match any version from a currently-enabled repository. Is there an easy way to search for such packages. Command-line solutions welcome.

• Getting work done in a small office

  I work in an office area of ~450sqft. There are a total of 7 people working in the office. I've been finding it hard to concentrate on my work (writing code) because of the distractions going on around me. The distractions are both work-related and non-work-related conversations. I'm trying to figure out what to do in this situation. I want to be part of the team, and I want to get my work done to the best of my ability. I can easily think of two options that I don't like: Stay where I am, not be able to concentrate and get less work done Move somewhere else. (This is tough because I code on a desktop, so I'm not very mobile.) But what are other options? I'm going to talk this through with my team in the next couple days. Any advice or solutions would be great.

• Flash doesn't work

  I am a Linux and Ubuntu fan for many years, but I can not normally use it because flash does not work in any Internet browser. I already installed Ubuntu, as well as Zorin-os, on many computers, but flash won't work on any of them. Is this only my problem. Does anybody else has this problem? I've read a lot of forums, I got many responses, but none of the answers did not help me. Flash persistently doesn't work. Is there any universal solution to resolve the problem efficiently? From the beginning of the installation flash does not work and none of the solutions do not help ... I must admit that I'm pretty desperate ... I am impatiently awaiting for an answer that will solve the issue.

• Wine installation on 12.04 LTS

  Installed wine from the Software Center and kept getting errors when trying to load windows programs. Uninstalled and did the apt-get installation of the latest version (1.5.7) Ran Wine configuration and get a "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited" If i try to install a program it immediately goes to "Internal error" Any Ideas or possible solutions would be appreciated. • AWR Performance Report and Read by Other Session Waits

  For the questions regarding "read by other session" and its relation to "db file sequential/scattered read", the logic is like this: When a "db file sequential/scattered read" is done, the blocks are either already in the cache or on the disk.  Since any operation on blocks is done in the cache and since and the issue is "read by other session" I will relate to the case the blocks are on the disk. Process A is reading the needed block from the disk to the cache.  During that time, if process B (and C and others) need the same block, it will wait on "read by other session".  A and B can be threads of the same process running in parallel or unrelated processes.  For example two processes doing full table scan on mdp_matrix etc. Solutions for that can be lowering the number of processes competing on the same blocks, increasing PCTFREE.  If it is a full table scan, maybe an index is missing that can result in less blocks being read from the cache and so on.

• How to avoid Hotmail/Live rejections for (legit) large volume eMailing?

  While qualifying eMail for Spam, Hotmail/Live checks the historical records of numbers of eMails sent by a sender (FROM, eMail Server, IP, etc.). Some times, perfectly valid bulk eMails that are not Spam, (i.e. double opt-in list, from a server with proper SPF Record, signed with DKIM, unregister links and contact info, etc.) are rejected and not delivered to destinataries. Not even to their Junk folder. I guess we can avoid this situation by progressivelly "training" Hotmail/Live about the reputation of our sender and sending small quantyties of eMails innitially and increasing the quantity for some amount/percentaje during each delivery. Are there guidelines or do you have any experience on these quantities, strategy, solutions? Thank you in advance.   I've been programming with Javascript for a few years now, and I guess I'm okay at it. I can solve pretty much any problem I come across, and while my solutions may not be that great, they work. However, I want to become a better Javascript programmer. I'd like to learn all the best-practices, tricks of the trade, things to avoid, and anything else I should know so that my code will be 100% optimized and as readable as possible. How do I do that? I realize this question has been loosely asked before here, but the OP was something of beginner. I want to get into the more advanced side of Javascript programming with this question. Is this possible or am I just being way too impatient? Do I just need to spend loads of time programming?

• Ubuntu 12 installation problem

  I have made about 30 copies of the Ubuntu installation CD, but there is no way to install it on my laptop. I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or I get a /casper/vmlinuz file not found or I get Invalid or corrupt kernel image. I tried all solutions that I found but no way to install ubuntu on this laptop. I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, I tried ubuntu 11, and no way to install it. Only If I install windows first and than can I install it with wubi. But that is not an ideal solution. That is linux installed on windows. If I install any other distributions of linux the installation works ok. So there must be some issue with ubuntu!

  Here is the design of my web site: The user enter myWebsite.com/a/1 .htaccess rules redirect to myWebsite.com/b Now the JavaScript ExtJS library is loading. Extracting the value from the URL (in this case it is “1”) Loading ./xml/1.xml From 1.xml setting the Open Graph data (Title, type, image, etc) Loading data that will be shown to the user from 1.xml into the website. My question is: How can I make the Open Graph data available to Facebook? Facebook do not to load my ExtJS JavaScript Library before extracting the Open Graph Object values from the HTML. Is there an easy solution to this problem? The only solutions I found is to make statics web pages or dynamically pages rendered on the server side but I would like to avoid these since my web page implementation is already finished and I would like to avoid re working on it.

• acer 1551 suspend/hibernate bug?

  I put 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer 1551. It does not want to wake from suspend or hibernate. I have tried several different solutions to the apparent problem, but none have worked for me. • The First Microsoft Dynamics NAV Builds on TFS 2010 Server

  We are now successfully, able build Dynamics NAV solutions using the TFS Build workflow mechanisms. Lots of test builds were made, the builds can restore the NAV Database and start from a fresh solution, take latest of the NAV objects and then import it to Navision and call the compile method. The workflow is also able to generate FOB files as output which can be directly shipped to the customers. I think this is the First in the world implementation of the TFS build concepts in conjunction with NAV. I think this is a time to change the thinking caps and try to approach ERP development and include the practises of ALM into ERP Product Development.

• Magento Bulk Product Import + Modules Nightmare

  Have 5,000 products in CSV file File has been re-saved as UT8 file in google documents and exported to CSV from excel File loads perfectly with all fields in demo of magento store manager (except we dont want to buy it:) When trying to upload in regular Magento..keep getting error messages on column duplicates....yes we have hundreds of duplicates as the titles of products in fields correspond with different sizes, etc...no way around it Any solutions around this or any open source software similar to store manager that can do the trick. Ready to give up and go to paid solution such as Big Commerce Also, Uploaded a bunch of free modules/keys...of open source bulk import products from magentocommerce but I cant find them anywhere in the main admin panel to use...there is no menu item for them anywhere??

• keyboard status leds not working

  Running Ubuntu 13.10 64bit The status leds are not working correctly on my new keyboard under Ubuntu. Pressing Caps Lock and Num Lock do not cause the leds to turn on/off to reflect their status. Rather I have a num lock led stuck on, and a caps lock led that never turns on. The actual function of the caps lock and num lock is unaffected though, just the leds not working. I am able to use ¨setleds¨ to turn the leds on an off from a console session, so I don´t think there's any hardware problem. Also the keyboard does not have the same problem under windows 7. Anyone have any solutions? thanks!
