• Petstore using Java EE 6 ? Almost!

  Antonio Goncalves, a Java Champion, JUG leader, and a well-known author, has started building a Petstore-like application using Java EE 6. The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1. The two goals of the project are: • use Java EE 6 and just Java EE 6 : no external framework or dependency • make it simple : no complex business algorithm The application works with GlassFish and JBoss today and there are plans to add support for TomEE.   I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? I am primarily a .NET developer, so the Unity C# integration is appealling. But I also have experience with AS3, JavaScript and Objective-C. Rich

• Empathy authentication error to XMPP server

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new machine and have been working on setting it up, but I've run into an interesting problem. I have a custom XMPP server for work (I don't control it, but we're using an in-house install). I can connect to it just fine via Pidgin, but due to some UI issues I'm having with Pidgin (and what appears to be better overall integration between Empathy and Ubuntu/Unity), I'd like to use Empathy instead. However, Empathy won't connect to my XMPP server, and I keep getting an authentication error and repeatedly prompted for my password. This happens even when importing the working account information from Pidgin (so I know things like the password are correct). Is there a way I can get Empathy working with my XMPP server?

• How to fix LibreOffice 3.5 to start from launcher icon?

  Recently I installed LibreOffice 3.5 from debs (including the ones for desktop integration. Since then it behaves in a weird manner. Basically it won't launch from launcher shortcuts. Example: dash libreoffice launched (launcher shows with 2 seconds delay) 'keep in launcher' LO closed the LO icon on the launcher clicked pulsating for 5 seconds, then stops LO didn't launch I didn't look for open processes or anything and... dash libreoffice launched immediately without problems It also didn't remember recently opened items, but now it got fixed somehow. Other symptoms: - icon on the launcher and all menu categories appear with a delay of few seconds - two writer icons appear on the launcher What I did: used 3.4.5, uninstalled, installed 3.5 RC3, problems started to occur uninstalled RC3 'clean' per http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_LibreOffice_on_Linux#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu_3 installed 3.5 stable which is identical to RC3 still same issues I don't know if it is related but I use Unity test PPA:vanvugt/unity which I needed to solve the stuttering windows bug.   It seems to me that everyone uses NUnit without even considering the other options. I think this is because: Everyone is familiar with it already so they won't have to learn a new API. It is already set up with their continuous integration server to work with NUnit. Am I wrong about this? I decided to use xUnit on one of my own projects recently and I love it! It makes so much more sense to me and conceptually it seems like a definite step forward from NUnit. I'd like to hear opinions on which framework is actually the best - not taking into consideration having to learn it or reconfigure your automated testing.

  I work on a well-established, embedded C++ code base. We have been using a proprietary API to our filesystem. For better integration with third-party C libraries, we are currently in the process of implementing most of stdio.h and fcntl.h. I made what I thought was a non-controversial proposal that we should also implement the fstream class and encourage new C++ code to use it instead of the new (to our code base) C-style API. We already have the stdout parts of iostream available, although it is not widely used. Given a choice between using stdio and fstream, what are good reasons to choose stdio for embedded software development in C++?

  I blogged about the difference and similarities between AWS CloudFormations and Oracle Assembler builder to package your software stack for deployment/provisioning to the cloud. However, these tools do not deal with software stack versioning and configuration management. This is where tools like Chef and Puppet come into play. Puppet and Chef points of interest: 1. Can be used in any cloud environment (rackspace, private cloud etc). 2. There is a debate between which is better. I am not going to get into this debate other then to say Puppet is more mature. 3. • Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration.
