  My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues? • Jungledisk - choosing between Amazon S3 and Rackspace ?

  Hi, jungledisk is owned by rackspace and offers an option to choose Amazon S3 which charges for traffic whereby if data is stored on rackspace, no charges for traffic. For a small company, to just backup files with jungle disk from ubuntu linux OS computers, i wonder what to choose. Commercial psychologically the price on traffic and the Amazon brand make it appear or maybe it is, of better quality than the cheaper Rackspace offer which is when it comes for just backing up ok ? but if its about backing up around 30 GB which updates from time to time, what would you consider a good choice ?

• How does one check whether the OS X "disabled" flag for launchd services is set?

  According to the man page for launchctl (emphasis mine):    -w   Overrides the Disabled key and sets it to false. In previous versions, this option would modify the configuration file. Now the state of the Disabled key is stored elsewhere on-disk. Because the current state of the disabled flag is no longer set in the .plist file itself, checking for the Disabled key is no longer an accurate way to tell if the service will run on next boot. Where is this "elsewhere on-disk"? More to the point (and more importantly), how does one check whether this flag is set? Also, is it possible to set a service to run on next boot without forcing it to start immediately (as with launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/my-service.plist)?

• Windows 7 - Add folder to Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the Command Line

  In Windows 7 is there a way to add a location to the Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the command line? I'm working with systems that are frequently re-imaged, and I would like to automate adding a number of favorite folders to explorer. I imagine these favorites are also stored in the registry. If someone knows where, I could probably automate managing them through the reg command, although this is less than ideal. I've looked at a number of locations related to explorer suggested here, but haven't found them yet. • mailsend not sending to (or qmail not receiving from) the same machine

  A web applications sends two emails: to the user of the webapp to the administrator the administrators mailbox (qmail) is on the same machine as the web application (php, apache, /usr/sbin/sendmail). email 1 works, email 2 sometimes doesn't work. I don't see any pattern in the mails that don't work. Also because I don't exactly know WHICH emails failed (since the email itself would be the only notification). email 2 looks like this: from: <[email protected]> #changes for each user to: <[email protected]> What could be the problem? Are rejected emails stored somewhere? (if they are rejected.. how do I check this?)

  I have Windows Vista Installed on my laptop. I ran and created a virtual OS from VMware. Inside that OS, I created 2 partitions and stored the files on the second drive. Now my Windows 7 installed in VirtualBox has been corrupted and needs to be repaired. VirtualBox itself is not corrupted, but the Windows 7 that runs in VirtualBox is. Instead of repairing, I only want to get my data from this second partition. Is it possible?

• Outlook 2010: When sending message on behalf of someone else, store that message in the other person's Sent Items folder

  We have an e-mail account for support purposes which is tended to by multiple members of the team. When answering a support e-mail we obviously choose the support account as sender. Still, the answer is not stored in the support account's Sent Items folder, but in the Sent Items of the person actually answering. This behavior, which seems to be by design, prevents others from gaining access to the entire conversation and potentially causes multiple answers. I am looking for an automated way of moving e-mails sent on behalf of someone else to that person's Sent Items folder. I tried to create a rule for this but could not find the right setting.

• Using e-mail address as user name for SMTP and POP3

  I have a exim4 setup as SMTP. My user naming schema is to name all mail users for this server as m001, m002, m003, ... and then redirect to a real e-mail address with virtual domains. How can I allow my users to authenticate with exim to send mail using either their system user name (m001) or the email address ([email protected])? User login information for m001 are stored in linux system files (passwd, shadow). They are linked thru entries in a virtual address table for each domain that this server can serve: # /etc/exim4/virtual/example.com m001: [email protected] m002: [email protected] m003: [email protected] The same can be applied to qpopper ?

• Sync iPhone applications in iTunes

  Suppose I have one the one hand one iTunes library on a PC used to sync Outlook contacts and calendar plus on the other hand one iTunes library on a Mac that syncs music, podcasts, apps, ringtones, etc. Both libraries are based on iTunes 9.0.2. It turns out that the iTunes library on the PC always tries to sync apps and ringtones as well. Unfortunately, this boils down to deleting apps and ringtones from the iPhone because the apps are not part of the iTunes library on the PC. After unchecking the checkbox to sync apps and ringtones and plugging the iPhone into the Mac the checkbox is also unchecked on the Mac. It seems as if the settings for syncing apps and ringtones are stored on the iPhone rather than in the particular iTunes library. Whenever syncing apps and ringtones is active on one machine it is also active on the other and vice versa. How can I make the PC ignore apps and ringtones and only sync contacts and calendar?

• What happens to a Windows Dynamic Drive

  In my windows (Windows 7) I have two primary logical volumns, One is on a SSD harddrive for my operating system and installed software, and my other is a Dynamic volume for my stored media. (I do alot of work with HD footage) I have all my media on the original DV tapes for backup purposes, just having them all available on my harddrive at all times is a major convience for me, well worth the few hundred dollar investment those 2TB drives were. Anyway, Long story short is my windows install has become problematic and I want to reformat windows. Does this, or will this effect my dynamic drive in any way? I've got almost 3 TB of video on there and i really dont want to re-import all my DV tapes.

• Postfix/dovecot remove LDAP user

  I have to remove or blacklist an LDAP/dovecot user. • File corruption when copying different file on raid 1

  I have a RAID 1 configuration of 2 1TB drives on a Fedora 12 box. Most of what is stored there are video files that are numerical labeled. The problem I'm having is that I had one of the video files get corrupted. I copied a replacement from a backup and replaced the bad file and now it works fine. However, after doing this the next numbered file goes from 350MB to 200KB and all but about .5 second of video disappears. If I then replace that file it happens to the next one down the line. Ex: Replace corrupt file 1.avi and file 2.avi shrinks to 200KB. Replace now corrupted 2.avi and it works but 3.avi gets screwed up. I have run SMART tests on the drives and they report fine. Does anyone have any tests I can run to try to figure out what is going on? EDIT: It is a two disk software RAID 1 with an ext4 filesystem

• Portable and Secure Document Repository

  I'm trying to find a document manager/repository (WinXP) that can be used from a USB disk. I would like a tool that will allow you to add all documents into a single repository (or a secure file system). Ideally you would login to this portable application to add or retrieve a document and document shouldn't be accessible outside of the application. I have found an application called Benubird Pro (app is portable) that allows you to add files to a single repository, but downsides are that it is not secure and the repository is always stored on the PC and not on the USB disk. Are you able to recommend any other applications? Thanks

• Using international phone numbers on iPhone [closed]

  Spin off question Is it possible to hack a SIM card to add a javacard application on it (to properly format international numbers)? If yes, how? Original Question In my previous phone carrier I could just dial +55 11 99883655 and it would just work. Now I moved to a new carrier and it doesn't work anymore! When I dial the same international number it keeps saying the number isn't formated correctly. How can I get my iPhone to understand international numbering back again? • Limited access to Amazon S3 buckets

  Is it possible to somehow limit the access to an Amazon S3 account. I don't really like the idea of distributing my secret access key to all of my applications, that want to access just a single bucket on my account. If someone gains access to one of the applications, I could loose all my data stored on S3. One way I was thinking to do it would be creating a second S3 account and give it access to just one bucket of the main account, but it's not really a great solution. Another nice thing for me would be to give the secondary account only write (but not modify/delete) and read access. That way I could upload backups or other files and be sure, that they won't get lost.

I have an iTunes library hosted on an ubuntu server and I'm looking for something to allow me to listen to all the albums stored on it. Ideally, it should provide a good quality playback both over headphones and through speakers so that everyone can hear it. It doesn't need to be ultra-portable - being able to move the system and plug in a mains lead should be enough, so a single, integrated unit is preferable. • Elastic beanstalk access private git repo

  I am trying to currently add an ssh key to my elastic beanstalk instances using .ebextensions commands. The keys I have stored are in my application code and I try to copy them to the root .ssh folder so I can access them when doing a git+ssh clone later here is an example of the config file in my .ebextensions folder packages: yum: git: [] container_commands: 01-move-ssh-keys: command: "cp .ssh/* ~root/.ssh/; chmod 400 ~root/.ssh/tca_read_rsa; chmod 400 ~root/.ssh/tca_read_rsa.pub; chmod 644 ~root/.ssh/known_hosts;" 02-add-ssh-keys: command: "ssh-add ~root/.ssh/tca_read_rsa" the problem is that I get is an error when attempting to clone the repo Host key verification failed. • How does an OS communicate with other hardware components?

  How can a program running on a CPU (mostly OS) access other PC hardware? Such as Graphic card, HDD and so? From what I read, in DOS, this was done using BIOS calls, specifically the INT instruction. But, the INT instruction should only jump to the certain space in RAM. So how can some program stored in RAM access other computer hardware, when the CPU can only access RAM, and receive interrupts? Does Windows use INT instructions as well, or is there a new way to communicate with the hardware?

• Ruby on Rails - How to migrate code from float to decimal?

  So I've got a ruby on rails code which use float a lot (lots of "to_f"). It uses a database with some numbers also stored as "float" type. I would like to migrate this code and the database to decimal only. Is it as simple as migrating the database columns to decimal (adding a decimal column, copying float column to decimal one, deleting float column, renaming decimal column to old float column name), and replacing "to_f" with "to_d" in the code? • How can I boot directly to a VirtualBox (.vdi) image (possibly via hypervisor)?

  I have a system image in VirtualBox as a .vdi file. I am aware of how to convert this to other formats of VM using VBoxManage. I'd like to boot this image locally on a number of clients which currently have no OS installed. What's the simplest way to boot into this VM from bare metal? I'm willing to install some minimal OS if necessary. Is this even possible? Maybe there's something out there along the lines of VDI Blaster that will load a locally stored VM?

• sp_releaseapplock timeout expired cause?

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server. • Windows Media Player 11 Not Detecting Autoplaylists

  Every time I open Windows Media Player it fails to detect my autoplaylists stored in <my music library dir>\Playlists. This appears to lead to sync problems since I (exclusively) use autoplaylists to sync music to my mobile. As WMP 11 fails to find the any sync autoplaylists it infuriatingly seems to decide that I want no music at all on my phone and proceeds to delete all my music off my phone. I guess these are two seperate problems but it seems to me they are related. If anyone can shed any light on a fix, that would be much appreciated. Many thanks

• Inexpensive degaussers or HDD shredders?

  I do a lot of work for a small cash-strapped business that has a lot of active hard drives, most are consumer-grade SATA of about five years of age, and predictably they are dying at an increasing rate, and a lot of the time they can't even be detected, let alone complete a zero-out cycle. Right now those drives are just being stored, but that can't continue forever. We've got a couple bad LTO tapes it'd be nice to deal with, too. There are very real security and legal issues that make dropping them off with someone who claims they'll be properly destroyed a gamble. I've looked around at degaussers and HDD shredders, and the ones that don't look like they come from some guy in his basement all seem to be $3000+, which is hard to swallow right now. Is there anything out there in the $500-1500 range that you would recommend? (Speed isn't a big issue, if it takes several minutes or even hours per drive, that's completely OK, we've only got 10 or so thus far.)

  Hello, i have a WD Mybook Premium (wd5000h032) it used to work just fine but suddenly i can't access to it. The blue lights turn on but the drive doesn't start, it makes no click, nor any other sound, it just like if it was disconnected from USB, of course my PC doesn't detect it, i've tried with trhee different USB cables two PCs and one laptop and nothing. Is it really dead? how can i recover the information stored there? i think the problem could be the case, if so, could i take out the disk and connect it as an internal drive? or could i buy another case?
