    So I am a small mac-user cog in a larger windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wifi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

  • Ubuntu: Move fsbackup backups to Amazon S3

    I have a legacy server (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic x86), where previous admin set up backups with fsbackup. This server lives in a VPS (under some kind of Xen), and it is low on HDD space (16 GB total). Now it came to a point, where fsbackup backups take more space than the rest of data in the system. The filesystem is 100% filled, and I already cleaned up all that I could, aside from actual backups. I do not have any experience managing fsbackup, and I do not want to break or lose the backups. Googling fsbackup gives surprisingly low quality results...   • Juniper router dropping pings to external interface

    My organization has a Juniper SSG20-WLAN that routes our traffic to the outside world. We've been having intermittent problems with our internet connection so I wrote up a Python script to ping the internal interface of the router, the external interface, a couple of our internal servers, the ISP router our router talks to, their upstream provider, and Google and Yahoo for good measure. It does that about every minute. What I have found is that when our internet goes out, our Juniper router ceases responding to pings on the external interface. Everything past that is, of course, unreachable. The internal interface and our internal servers continue to echo back without interruption. None of the counters indicate dropped packets of any type. They all look normal. The logs complain about VIP servers being unavailable but otherwise nothing indicative of network issues. My questions are these: Does this exonerate our ISP? Or, contrawise, might a problem with the connection be causing the external interface to go down? Is there somewhere else in the SSG20, beside the system log and counters, that might help me track down info on the problem? UPDATE: Turned out that one of the switches between my monitoring box and the router was a router itself, and occasionally diverting from the gateway to itself. Kudos to those who made suggestions along those lines. Not really sure which answer to mark as accepted, as it was really stuff in the comments that turned out to be right. Thanks for the suggestions.

    While investigating complains on bad HTTP server performance, I've discovered these lines in dmesg of my Xen XCP host that contains a guest OS with said server: [11458852.811070] net_ratelimit: 321 callbacks suppressed [11458852.811075] nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet. I have installed Windows 7 on it which shows the usable memory as 2.74GB. Why is this? Don't tell me the 32 bit story; I program for a living.   • PHP & IIS 6 Encoding problem

    The server is running Windows 2003 with IIS 6.0.3790.1830 x86 (iis.dll). My database server is Microsoft SQL Server 2000. My PHP version is 5.3. The original application is hosted on appserv1 and it's database is on dbserv1. It's working fine, everything is tuned up, running great. It was needed to place the same application (different modules) on another server, for other uses, so I copied the database on dbserv2, configured appserv2 to host the application, so I achieved 2 almost identical copies. Both dbserv1 and dbserv2 use the same encoding, both appserv1 and appserv2 are on IIS6 with the same PHP configurations. I also tried my best to have the same settings in the IIS. I also made sure that I pass the encoding information both in the HTTP headers and in the meta tags with http-equiv. Both applications use utf-8. The Problem is that the copy of the application doesn't display the non-ASCII characters normally in the browser, even if the browser detects correctly the UTF-8 encoding of the page. First I thought it was a database issue, given the fact that MSSQL 2000 doesn't support UTF-8, and instead it uses UCS-2, but when I redirected the application on appserv2 to work with the database on dbserv1, it had the same encoding problems. This is why I am asking in what way I can make it work. thank you for reading.

  • Is this a graphics card failure?

    I own an older 32-bit Dell XPS 410 that I intended to use for gaming. Currently, I have a ATI Radeon 4000 series card installed, along with a Core 2 Duo and Ubuntu 12.10. I'm fairly certain that my problem is a GPU failure - but before I spend money on a new one, I want to make sure other components aren't the problem/if it would be cheaper just to buy a new PC. Here are my symptoms: Computer power button remains orange (usually green when successfully started.) A fan gets increasingly faster until powered off. Monitor remains black when started, receiving no signal. When powered on, the computer will power itself off near instantly, and then turn on again. If startup is successful, sometimes the screen will become jittered and unusable unless restarted. Is this just a GPU failure, or something more extensive like the motherboard?

  • Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 Done

    Since I have joined SSW as a Solution Architect its Chief Architect, Adam Cogan, has been mentoring me and pushing me to do better. One of the things that I have been wanting to do since the first DDD Scotland was to present a session. For DDD Scotland 2010 Adam suggested that I submit he double session on “Better project Management with Team Foundation Server 2010”. So, with some apprehension I submitted two session as Part A and Part B. Download DDD Scotland -  Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 How surprised was I that after the attendees had finished casting their votes that both sessions would be in the top 20 one in the top 5. I an effort to promote diversity in sessions the DDD committee try to make sure that each presenter only have one session. I would have to compress SSW’s presentation into 1 hour. Around this time SSW embarked on it continuing adventures with scrum an Microsoft started heavily investing in Scrum for its internal use. I decided to do a slightly different session, but one that would still meet the agenda and goal of the billed session to provide “Better project management with Team Foundation Server 2010”. And so Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 was born. At this stage I really have to thank Aaron Bjork who provided me with many of the slides and animations as I really can’t work Power Point. On the 27th of April I presented the session for the Aberdeen Partner Group and then on 8th May I presented at DDD Scotland.   • Is my Windows partition too far down on the disk?

    I have /boot/ on /dev/sda1 (1GB), followed by my Linux root LVM on /dev/sda2 (1.3GB). Finally, I installed Windows 7 on /dev/sda3 in the remaining 700GB of space. When I select Windows 7 in the grub menu, I get something like the following error and am thrown to grub4dos: find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /bootmgr Error 15: file not found Unable to locate necessary tables for adjustment. None of the options in grub4dos return anything but the above error. I heard that 1TB is the upper limit for locating Windows 7 partitions; is this true? How can I fix the above?

  • Install php-fpm + php-mysql + MariaDB on Centos from repos

    I try to take CentOS 6.4 x64 and install nginx w/ php-fpm on it (and that's easy part, no problem at all), then add php-mysql package and MariaDB as a mysql drop-in replacement. And here I face the hang... I've added epel, nginx and remi repos, add priority=10 line to its .repo files, and now as I install MariaDB-server the dependency also brings me MariaDB's "common" package. Then, as I try to install php-mysql, I see file /usr/share/mysql/french/errmsg.sys from install of MariaDB-server-5.5.27-1.x86_64 conflicts with file from package mysql-libs-5.5.28-1.el6.remi.x86_64 warnings. If I deinstall MariaDB server, I'm able to install mysql-libs and php-mysql, but it won't allow me to install MariaDB later. Is there any way to escape that (infinite) loop? I believe the solution is simple but still can't see it. Please help to install php-fpm + php-mysql and MariaDB as DB server!

  • Windows PowerShell ISE doesn't import PSCX 2.0 module

    Hi, i am using Powershell 2.0 with the PSCX 2.0 module. When writing PS scripts inside Windows PowerShell ISE no Cmdlets from the PSCX module are availible. For example running "Get-DriveInfo" from Windows PowerShell ISE would cause an error. Running "Get-DriveInfo" from Powershell works fine. I guess Windows PowerShell ISE doesn't load my PS profile (this would be mad). Does anyone know why and what to do to get it work?

  • Install .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows 7 RC

    While attempting to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on a fresh install of Windows 7 RC, nothing happens. The machine gives a UAC prompt. When selecting Yes, nothing happens. Using the full redistributable package gives the same result: nothing. Is there a reason why the .NET 3.5 SP1 installer would suddenly quit and not proceed with installation?

  • s3fs: how to force remount on errors?

    I use s3fs 1.33 on Ubuntu 9.10. Regularily it gives me errors like this: rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32) rsync: close failed on "/mnt/s3/mybucket/filename": Software caused connection abort (103) rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(731) [receiver=3.0.6] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (86 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(600) [sender=3.0.6] Any attempt to work with mounted directory after that gives this error: Transport endpoint is not connected To get rid of this, I have to remount. Is there a way to force a remount automatically?

  • WSUS trying to download all updates again

    The server hosting WSUS had a catastrophic failure and we have had to rebuild the system drives. Luckily the DB and content store for WSUS are on a seperate drive so were unaffected. During the rebuild process we thought it was time to update the server to 2008 R2 (from 2003 R2). Have got the server running and installed the WSUS role, detached the DB form SQL Express 2008 R2 and attached the original. Carried out the wsusutil.exe movecontent command with a -skipcopy switch pointing to the original content store. All looked good until I saw the front page stating it is trying to download files for 6,436 updates at around 344,565 MB!!!!!! Oops, I thought, something not right here. The content store I have on disk is only 75GB but I am thinking that some vital step has been missed in the restoration process. Either way is there a way to make WSUS reindex its local content store or something as I am unsure that downloading 344 gigabytes is a viable way forward! EDIT: Never rains but it pours. AM now getting a CLSID: FX {8b6499ed-0241-e032-6508-da4b1c879d7e} error could not create snap in. think a reinstall of WSUS is in order.
