• Linux command to concatenate audio files and output them to ogg

  What command-line tools do I need in order to concatenate several audio files and output them as one ogg (and/or mp3)? If you can provide the complete command to concatenate and output to ogg, that would be awesome. Edit: Input files (in my case, currently) are in wma format, but ideally it should be flexible enough to support a wide range of popular formats. Edit2: Just to clarify, I don't want to merge all wmas in a certain directory, I just want to concatenate 2 or 3 files into one. Thanks for the proposed solutions, but they all seem to require creating temporary files, if possible at all, I'd like to avoid that.

• My 5.1 audio system not working properly when I connect to Internet

  I just bought a Genuis 5005 5.1 audio system, and I have an issue with it: It won't work properly when I get on the Internet (the central speaker isn't working). I also bought an Asus Xonar DG 5.1 sound card which works perfectly. I installed it and also installed the driver for it. When I play music/videos from my hard drive, all the speakers work fine, but when I connected to Internet to play videos/music, the center speaker won't work. How can I fix this issue?

• converting huge MPEG audio files to something smaller

  I've got some large MPEG audio files (144 MB each) that I'm looking to convert to something smaller so I can send them out as attachments to an email. Any suggestions on the software to use? I'm looking for something free that will run on Windows. I don't really care what the destination file is, mp3 would be nice. If there's a web service out there that would do this without the need to download any software to my machine, that would be even better, but I would be more than happy just getting it done any way I can. • Out of sync audio video using mencoder

  hi i converted a mkv (matroska) file to avi using ffmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -f mp4 -vcodec mpeg4 -sameq -r 29.97 -b 512kb -acodec ac3 -ab 128kb -vol 512 output.avi the output file plays fine using mplayer. after that, i using mencoder to insert subtitles: mencoder output.avi -o new.avi -oac pcm -ovc lavc -subfont-text-scale 3 -sub subtitle.srt however, after i play back the video "new.avi", the video and audio is out of sync. What options can i put into mencoder to sync the A/V. ? I have also tried ffmpeg -newsubtitle option but can't get it work. Any examples of usage of -newsubtitle would be greatly appreciated. thanks

• Windows 7 does not recognize hdmi audio output

  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 on a Dell 545 MT with audio/video output via nVidia 9800 GTX+ to a flat screen television. I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled all the most recent drivers from nVidia & realtek, but the machine will not recognize the hdmi output as a sound device (as it did previously in Vista). I troubleshot the problem with Dell for over an hour and was then directed to their software specialists who want $130 to fix the issue! Can anyone offer some insights on this? I've searched nVidia and Windows 7 forums w/o success and would really like to get sound coming back through my tv speakers. Many Thanks.

• Audio recording background noise

  For a long time time I've been trying to get rid of the background noise that appears in every audio recording I make with my computer. Tried different microphones, different sound setting, drivers. Interesting fact - the volume of this sound is equal whether I use and internal notebook microphone or an external one. I tried really good mics, so I'm sure the problem is not in it. Laptop on which this problem appears in HP Probook 4720. OS - Windows 7. P.S. Read an answer to a similar question: Annoying sound from microphone in headphone. Tried everything that was mentioned there. Only I don't have a "DC Offset Cancellation option". And when I disable "Noise Suppression" and "Acoustic Echo Cancellation", noise only becomes more noticeable. What should I do? • Automatically convert audio files in a certain folder

  Anyone know of an application that automatically* converts audio files in a certain folder from one format to another? *By automatically, I mean that there is no user interaction besides initial setup and dropping files into a certain folder. So, basically, I could rip a CD to a certain directory in FLAC format, then this app would see that new files were added to the folder and convert them to MP3s (into another folder, preferably). (It would also be great if the app integrated with MusicBrainz's Picard to rename and re-tag files that are incorrect before sending them to the converter, but that's just icing on the top.)

• No dialogues can be heard in a movie with a 5.1 audio

  I recently purchased 'PHILIPS DSP56U' 5.l multimedia system and got it connected with my laptop. All the speakers are connected good and all the channels responded well for the test sounds. The stereo music tracks and other normal movies (stereo) plays good. I'm having a problem with playing a movie with a 5.1 audio track. I can hear the background soundtrack, weapon effects, but I cannot hear the dialogues (which I assume to be a separate track). I'm using VLC to play the movie and it would be grateful if someone help me through this :)

• Command line audio library manager for Linux

  Hi all Hear is my set-up, I have a Linux server that is running Music Player Demon, all the audio files are under a dir (/muzik) which is exported by NFS. So to add files to the MPD database, I just drop the files into the /muzik NFS share and up date the MPD db, so far so good, but I would like to keep the dir strucher belowe /muzik in sum sort of order. To achieve this I am using Amarok, wich a start on my laptop and then use the organise files command to sort the files in into a sensible dir strucher based on the tags in the files. Do you know of any command line utility that can do the same thing that I am using Amarok for so I can run it from cron on the server and automate the process? I hope that this make sense.

• Multimedia PDF (Audio, Video and Links) That works on Desktop and iOS

  We've got a client that wants to have a PDF that has embedded audio, video and links. Using Acrobat Pro 9.x I've been able to embed all three no problem. They all work/playback if I use Acrobat Pro/Acrobat Reader. But don't show up in OS X's Preview at all. They also don't show up in iOS. Links work everywhere, but no multimedia. So I tried creating a similar document via Apple's iBooks Author, then exported as a PDF. Links work, but multimedia doesn't seem to work anywhere. Is there any way to make a PDF that works universally with embedded links and multimedia?

• erratic audio levels on windows vista

  I'm somewhat hard of hearing. I've been listening to my windows Vista machine with a pair of headphones so I don't annoy the others. I have 2 issues: 1) the volume varies enormously depending on the source. Having a windows alert occur while I am listening to a DVD or Youtube is a painful experience. Is there a preferred way to set all the different audio controls so I have a more constant volume? I already have lowered the volumes of the windows alerts. 2)Is there a way to limit the volume of my headphones to protect what is left of my hearing? Is there a software solution or should I be going for a hardware limiter? thanks retired dude

• Streaming audio to headless linux box

  I have a dual boot (Win 7 + Ubuntu) PC connected via wifi with my music collection on a local HDD. I usually use Rhythmbox on Ubuntu or Winamp on Windows to listen to my music but I'll change if I have to. I also have a Raspberry Pi (low power PC running Debian) in the living room that is usually headless and connected via ethernet. The Raspberry Pi is also connected to my living room speakers via an amp. I would like to be able to stream music from my PC over the network to the linux raspberry pi. What software can I use to do this? Some sort of audio client\server?

• Cannot set audio input volume (internal microphone) on mac

  On a macbook air (MacOS X 10.6.5), when doing skype calls people are complaining they hear me very low - so I had a look to the system preferences under audio and noticed the input volume was 54%. I am now trying to set the input volume to 100%. To my surprise the volume is gradually set back as I speak. I tried deselecting 'use ambient noise reduction' but it doesn't help.' Is there any way to avoid this volume auto-setting feature? Any help appreciated!

• Real time audio streaming

  I have a remote computer running OS X. I would like to stream the audio from the microphone input over the network so I can listen to it. Primarily I want to do this because I'm out of the office but still need to communicate with people there. I would like to use VLC, but am not fully aware of the options available. I tried SoundFly (as recommended by another answer) but this didn't seem to want to connect. At this point I should note that I'm using a VPN network to connect to the remote computer (using Hamachi). I can open up ports / etc fine though, so I should be able to do this. Alright, I found Nicecase which does exactly what I want but I would prefer to not have to shell out $40 for it.

• Reducing volume of an audio device on windows 7

  I have a USB headset with a very loud amplifier, but low granularity in its gain control. In order to get comfortable audio, I have to reduce the individual application levels in the mixer to '1', and the master mixer to around '10'. Of course, new applications start out at '10', and immediately blast out my ears. Is there a way to add a filter to cut down the volume some so I can get better control of it? That is, reduce the volume of '100' so I can work within a reasonable range.

• Are there any 5.1 surround audio switches on the market?

  (Somewhat related to this question) I have a set of Logitech 5.1 surround speakers, which use 3 stereo 3.5mm TRS connectors (minijacks) to transfer the audio (the typical green/black/orange audio outputs). I have a Griffin Firewave hooked up to my MacBook Pro, and my desktop has a Realtek ALC889 audio chipset. I have looked for a way to, essentially, switch the speaker inputs between my Firewave and my desktop without having to disconnect the cables from one, route them around my desk, and plug them into the other. I'd love to have something like an old Belkin DB-25/LPT switch, but for these audio cables. Of course, purchasing one and soldering my own cables on the connection terminals is always an option, but, is there a reasonably priced 5.1 audio switch (or 3x stereo) on the market that will accomplish the simple task of switching audio outputs between two computers into a set of 5.1 speakers? • PHP: Writing non-english characters to XML - encoding problem

  Hello, I wrote a small PHP script to edit the site news XML file. I used DOM to manipulate the XML (Loading, writing, editing). It works fine when writing English characters, but when non-English characters are written, PHP throws an error when trying to load the file. If I manually type non-English characters into the file - it's loaded perfectly fine, but if PHP writes the non-English characters the encoding goes wrong, although I specified the utf-8 encoding. Any help is appreciated. • Switched from DVI to HDMI, possible audio artifacts?

  I'm using an ASUS VH236H monitor and an EVGA GeForce 570 GTX both of which are brand new. My monitor has an audio out port for speakers/headphones so I plugged in my headphones and made a random selection from my library when I noticed two things: There are static-like artifacts during "louder" parts of songs. There's what seems to be a volume cap in place. When I crank the volume past 100% in VLC the decibel level does not truly increase but the amount of static does. The cable is not new; I yanked it off of my PS3 when my DVI cable broke. It has been used a good amount on my HDTV and PS3 so I doubt it's a matter of burn-in. I like the way the setup works with an HDMI cable as opposed to DVI because my headphones barely reach my rig whereas I have plenty of slack when they're plugged into my monitor. Thanks in advance for any support. Note: I'm using a high quality HDMI cable from monoprice, AKG K702 headphones, and VLC media player.

• Audio server with best API?

  I'm a web dev, working in a small studio with a couple of other devs and some crayon-munchers (or, "designers"). Like all the best and trendiest creative studios, we have tunes. Our tunes consists of a set of speakers that whoever wants to can plug into their machine, and DJ their little socks off via iTunes, Spotify, VLC or whatever their music player of choice happens to be. Obviously, this lacks finesse. What we WANT is this: a single, dedicated machine running some sort of audio player (ideally Win-based, but a Linux flavour isn't impossible), that exposes an API. We (ie: me and the other devs) want to write a web-based client onto it, that'll let us remotely do all sorts of funky stuff like generating on-the-fly genre-based playlists, and voting for tracks, and making tea. My question - and please forgive me if this isn't the place for such a question, I was going to ask on Stackoverflow but that didn't seem right either - is this: what's the best player to start with? What can do all of this? I know VLC can function as a streaming server, but know nothing of any API it may have. I'd rather chop my pinky off than use iTunes, but if it does what we want, then... • Strage character encoding problem with Eclipse / Spring / Tomcat 6

  Hi, I have been trying things all da but can't get a proper solution. My problem is: I am developing a Spring MVC based app in my local Tomcat. My MYSQl database has UTF-8 encoding set, all content in there displays properly when using phpMyAdmin. Also the output in LOG files using log4j in catalina.out works fine. My JSP pages are configured by <!-- encoding --> <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %> <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8" %> Also showing data on my JSP works fine. I can also send data from my Controller without any DB intereference using special chars, e.g. String str = "UTF-8 Test: Ä Ö Ü ß è é â"; logger.debug(str); mav.addObject("utftest", str); That displays correctly in log and on jsp page in browser. BUT: When having special chars directly in my JSP file, e.g. for text in headers, this does not work. FF and Google Chrome display strange chars but report the page to be UTF-8. When switching to Latin, the chars just get more and more strange. Same problem when showing text tokens from my messages.properties file, although Eclipse says when right-clicking that UTF-8 will be used. I am a little it lost and don't know where to check now. Summary: DB storage is fine DB output on JSP is fine Output on JSP directly form controller is fine even reading in form forms is fine .properties files and JSP text is not fine !!! Any ideas? I really appreciate and tips.

• Office Automation: What does destroy my encoding?

  I'm facing a problem with a Word Mail Merge Automation controlled by our CRM system. The setup Base for the Mail Merge is a Word .dot template which fires a macro on Document.New. Inside this macro I create a .Net component registered for COM. Set myCOMObject = CreateObject("MyCOMObject") The component pulls some data from a database and hands string values which are assigned to Word DocumentVariables. Set someClass = myCOMObject.GetSomeClass(123) ActiveDocument.Variables("docaddress") = someClass.GetSenderAddress(456) All string values returned from the component are encoded in UTF-8 (codepage 1200). What happens The problem arises when the CRM system calls Word to perform the Mail Merge: The string values from the component are turned into UTF-8 encoded strings. All the static text inside the template and the data pulled for the Mail Merge stay nicely encoded in UTF-16 - example the umlaut ü inside my DocumentVariables is turned into c3 b0 while it stays fc for the rest of the document (checked file in hex editor). If I'm creating a document from a template with the same macro functionallity but without performing a Mail Merge all strings are fine; i.e. are encoded in UTF-16. What changed According to the CRM software vendor the encoding of the Mail Merge data export was changed to UTF-16 with the new version we're currently testing. I found out that MS states that you'll expirience issues when the document and the Mail Merge data file encoding don't match. What I tried Since I'm assuming to merge with UTF-16 encoded data I added the following lines to my macro: ActiveDocument.TextEncoding = msoEncodingWestern ActiveDocument.SaveEncoding = msoEncodingUnicodeLittleEndian This is what the Mail Merge data document specifies in its document properties.

• PHP Json Encoding w/ quote escaping in 5.2?

  I'm playing with the flickr api and php. I want to pass some information from PHP to Javascript through Ajax. I have the following code: json_encode($pics); which results in the following example JSON string: [{"id":"4363603591","title":"blue, white and red...another seattle view","date_faved":"1266379499"},{"id":"4004908219","title":"\u201cI just told you my dreams and you made me see that I could walk into the sun and I could still be me and now I can't deny nothing lasts forever.\u201d","date_faved":"1259987670"}] Javascript has problems with this, however, due to the unescaped single-quote in the second item ("can't deny"). I want to use the function json_encode with the options parameter to make it strip the quotes, but that's only available in PHP 5.3, and I'm running 5.2 (not my server). Is there a fast way to run through the entire array and escape everything before encoding it in Json? I looked for a way to do this, but it all seems to deal with encoding it as the data is generated, something I cannot do as I'm not the one generating the data. • Space-saving character encoding for japanese?

  In my opinion a common problem: character encoding in combination with a bitmap-font. Most multi-language encodings have an huge space between different character types and even a lot of unused code points there. So if I want to use them I waste a lot of memory (not only for saving multi-byte text - i mean specially for spaces in my bitmap-font) - and VRAM is mostly really valuable... So the only reasonable thing seems to be: Using an custom mapping on my texture for i.e. UTF-8 characters (so that no space is waste). BUT: This effort seems to be same with use an own proprietary character encoding (so also own order of characters in my texture). In my specially case I got texture space for 4096 different characters and need characters to display latin languages as well as japanese (its a mess with utf-8 that only support generall cjk codepages). Had somebody ever a similiar problem (I really wonder, if not)? If theres already any approach? Edit: The same Problem is described here http://www.tonypottier.info/Unicode_And_Japanese_Kanji/ but it doesnt provide an real solution how to save these bitmapfont mappings to utf-8 space efficent. So any further help is welcome!
