• Block elements vs inline elements in HTML: why the distinction?

  The distinction between block and inline elements always seemed strange to me. The whole difference is that a block element takes up the entire width thus forcing a line break before and after the element, and an inline element only takes up as much as the content. Why not just have one type of element- an inline element where you can also apply custom height/width, and use that? You want line breaks? Insert a <br />, or maybe add a special tag in the CSS for that behavior. The way it's now, I don't see it solving any problem, and instead it only forces a property that in my opinion should be decided by a designer. So why the two types?

• X doesn't find nvidia module when installing developer driver

  I just downloaded the developer driver from Nvidia's CUDA Zone. Executed it and typed in restart gdm and the it worked. However after rebooting X didn't come up (xorg log), to fix it I can simply rerun the installer and the restart gdm again. What I don't understand is where it breaks and why X11 doesn't find the module?! I removed all (I think..) of the Nvidia packages which can with Ubuntu 10.10. I've also googled a bit and found some HOWTOs about manually installing the Nvidia driver. However all of them were for an earlier version of Ubuntu. Please do not respond telling me I should use the proprietary Nvidia driver supplied by Ubuntu, because I need the development drivers.

• Advantages of Client/Server Architecture over Mainframe Architecture

  Originally mainframe architectures relied on a centralized host server that processed data and returned it to be displayed on a dummy terminal. These dummy terminals did not have my processing power and could only display data that was sent from the mainframe. Application architecture completely changed with the advent of N-Tier architecture. The N-Tier architecture replaced the dummy terminals with standard PCs that could think and/or process for themselves. This allowed for applications to be decentralized. Further, this type of architecture also breaks up the roles found within a mainframe by extracting Web Interfaces, Application Logic and Data access in to 3 separate parts so that it can be extended and distributed as the demands of an application increases.

• Best practice for managing dynamic HTML modules?

  I've been building web apps that add and remove lots of dynamic content and even structure within the page, and I'm not impressed by the method I'm using to do it. When I want to add a section or module into a position in the interface, I'm storing the html in the code, and I don't like that: if (rank == "moderator") { $("#header").append('<div class="mod_controls">' + // content, using + to implement line breaks '</div>'); } This seems like such a bad programming practice.. There must be a better way. I thought of building a function to convert a JSON structure to html, but it seems like overkill.   I'm writing an Ubuntu package for a package which essentially provides a number of libraries and headers which then be used to build other software. The package also breaks up in smaller subpackages which are interdependent; in this sense the package is quite similar to boost. I noticed that packages like boost provide [...] libboost-dbg libboost-dev libboost-doc [...] libboost-all-dev [...] but nothing that goes by the name boost or libboost. What is the idea behind this? What are the purposes of the -dbg, -dev, and -doc packages? Are there any instructions provided on how to write build files for those packages?

• C# Tip - Rendering HTML in a Gridview cell

  Just a quick tip for working with the gridview in ASP.Net.  If your data column contains HTML text, you've probably seen something like this in your gridview after pulling the data: <font color="red">First Item</font><br/><font color="green">Second Item</font><br/><font color="blue">Third Item</font> To have the relevant column render in HTML, just go to your gridview property pages, find the column you need rendered in HTML, and click 'convert this Field into a TemplateField'.  The result is that as a template field, HTML within your bound data value will be rendered properly.  So our example above would transform into: First Item Second Item Third Item I primarily use this technique for enabling HTML content in comment fields, and to insert line breaks when building the data for these fields. • What is the most effective way to add functionality to unfamiliar, structurally unsound code?

  This is probably something everyone has to face during the development sooner or later. You have an existing code written by someone else, and you have to extend it to work under new requirements. Sometimes it's simple, but sometimes the modules have medium to high coupling and medium to low cohesion, so the moment you start touching anything, everything breaks. And you don't feel that it's fixed correctly when you get the new and old scenarios working again. One approach would be to write tests, but in reality, in all cases I've seen, that was pretty much impossible (reliance on GUI, missing specifications, threading, complex dependencies and hierarchies, deadlines, etc). So everything sort of falls back to good ol' cowboy coding approach. But I refuse to believe there is no other systematic way that would make everything easier. Does anyone know a better approach, or the name of the methodology that should be used in such cases?

Background: Broadening my last question, there is a request for tender for a software system that's open and I have decided to take it on. I am a software developer & engineer by profession and, in this tender process, I have to put on the pricing for my bid. I have been provided a documentation consisting of functional and non-functional requirements only. I have to put a project manager's cap on and think of all aspects, e.g. cost for implementation for the project, resources needed, etc. My question is: Is there a project framework that I can follow that breaks the project cycle into steps and corresponding cost aspect or how would I go about best calculating/approximating the cost for the project?

• Keep Google Analytics in a backup site or not?

  I backed up my website and uploaded it to another server for testing and backup purposes. Should I remove the Google Analytics snippet from the index.php (which is for the real site), or does it not matter as it's not the same server and url address as the one declared at Google Analytics account? The reason I don't want to remove it is in case someone forgets about it if they upload the backup to the real site in case the real one breaks. Also I know that if I turn off the website there is no GA snippet, but I need it open so I can easily access and test it so I don't have to write pass all the time.

• After executing a command in the terminal, I sometimes can't execute another

  First off sorry for the noob question, I'm sure it's been asked before but I have no idea how to phrase it eloquently... Sometimes when I open/run/execute (unsure of proper term) an application (?lol) from the terminal like geany ie: geany filename.php or maybe run a node.js script: node server.js The command will execute fine, but I'm then left without the ability to execute any other commands unless I open another terminal. my root@pcname:~$ is gone and when I try typing in something else and hitting Enter it just breaks to the next line. I've noticed that sometimes I can hit CTRL+D and it'll give me my prompt back (sorry is prompt even the right name for it?) So could someone please explain why this is happening and how I can get back to the prompt without opening another terminal. Thanks, and sorry again for my noobery.

• Comparing angles and working out the difference

  I want to compare angles and get an idea of the distance between them. For this application, I'm working in degrees, but it would also work for radians and grads. The problem with angles is that they depend on modular arithmetic, i.e. 0-360 degrees. Say one angle is at 15 degrees and one is at 45. The difference is 30 degrees, and the 45 degree angle is greater than the 15 degree one. But, this breaks down when you have, say, 345 degrees and 30 degrees. Although they compare properly, the difference between them is 315 degrees instead of the correct 45 degrees. How can I solve this? I could write algorithmic code: if(angle1 > angle2) delta_theta = 360 - angle2 - angle1; else delta_theta = angle2 - angle1; But I'd prefer a solution that avoids compares/branches, and relies entirely on arithmetic.

• Does dist-upgrade require PPA software to be uninstalled first?

  Hi all, I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 with quite a few PPAs. Amongst the PPAs there is Guiodic (Guido Iodice) Lucid quasi-rolling :) PPA which brings most recent versions of many programs to my desktop. My steps: sudo update-manager -d click on upgrade on the appearing window wait for the magic to happen: prepare to upgrade and setting new software channels during 'calculating the changes' I will get the following error message in the panel An error occurred, please run Package Manager form the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Marking the upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolver generated breaks, this may be caused by help packages.)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies When I check Synaptic/apt-get I can't find any errors or hint toward broken packages Could this error be because of many PPA versions being newer than 10.04 original versions?

I'm a straight 40 hour/week programmer, who is lucky to spend an hour or two a month outside of work on anything programming related. • XUbuntu 12.04 sound becomes distorted on ASUS-computers

  On my XUbuntu 12.04 Desktop from time to time audio becomes distorted, not the audio from some specific applications but every possible sounds are very noisy and barely recognizable. Then i go to: Applications Menu Multimedia PulseAudio Volume Control "Configuration"-tab and change Built-in Audio's Profile from my current profile to something else. After that audio becomes normal, until it breaks again and i have to repeat these steps. It's happening on two different computers: one is an ASUS-based Desktop and other is ASUS notebook. Maybe it's related to some common motherboard audio components. Motherboard is: ASUS P8P67 EVO REV 3.0 Netbook is: ASUS EEPC VX6 Any help will be much appreciated = )

• Rendering problems with Java LWJGL

  I'm new to rendering and so I don't know if I can speed up the code or that what I'm doing is bad. This is what it looks like But, if I have say 100-200 triangles everything is fine. Yet, when I get to 400 triangles it becomes very laggy. At 1,000 triangles it becomes 5fps at max. Also, when I try to close it everything becomes extremely laggy and the game breaks my computer. • How can I gain access to a player instance in a Minecraft mod?

  I'm creating Minecraft mod with a pickaxe that takes away experience when you break a block. The method for taking away experience from a player is addExperience on EntityPlayer, so I need to get an instance of EntityPlayer for the player using my pickaxe when the pickaxe breaks a block, so that I can remove the appropriate amount of experience.   I know there are quite a few continuous collision detection algorithms out there , but I can't find a list or summary of different 2D techniques; only tutorials on specific algorithms. What techniques are out there for calculating when different 2D bodies will collide and what are the advantages / disadvantages of each? I say techniques and not algorithms because I have not yet decided on how I will store different polygons which might be concave or even have holes. I plan to make a decision on this based on what the algorithm requires (for instance if an algorithm breaks down a polygon into triangles or convex shapes I will simply store the polygon data in this form).

• Mobile music playback on android phone keeps buffering

  I have copied some music to a ubuntu synced folder on my karmic machine. I have the Ubuntu One android app installed on android 2.2 phone. When listening to music I get frequent breaks whilst the music is buffering, even with full signal. every other music streaming servie such as last fm and bbc player are fine. What is going wrong? mp3s should not have trouble buffering over a good 3g signal. I have set cache size to 200mb but i cant find a buffer size. Is it my mp3s? they are usually in the order of 320kb/s this is a breaker for me if there is no solution which is a massive shame as i like the principal of the software. cheers
