• Wireless Problem on Acer Aspire 5610z

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 on my machine, but I can't get wireless connection to work. My computer is Acer Aspire 5610z. I found that some other people that have same computer, face the same problem. • Ubuntu 12.10 & 12.04.1 LTS mouse freezing (Saitek Cyborg R.A.T.5 Mouse)

  I've figured it out: it's the Cyborg mouse. I'll be looking through the questions as I remember seeing something about this. I'm getting a similar issue to this fellow: Ubuntu 11.04 randomly freezes for over one minute Sometimes it comes back to life after a minute or two only to crash again. Alt-tab works, but it does not display the windows-switching animation. It just switches the focus... sometimes. Ctrl-Alt-T works, thankfully, and the terminal stays responsive long enough for me to get in a "sudo reboot now" and type my password. I'm running a fresh Wubi install on a separate HDD from my Windows install. 64-bit 12.10 12.04.1 LTS now, with an AMD FX chip, 8GB of RAM, and a Radeon HD 3850. My mouse is a Saitek Cyborg R.A.T.5 Mouse, and my keyboard is a stock Acer one that came with a PC I bought a few years ago.

Here what 1x and 2x mean : 1x - mention normal speed of the game, 2x - mention the game object moves with double speed means user experience the fast game play. I want to implement such functionality for my game. • Multiple problems while installing Ubuntu 13.04 on LENOVO G500 laptop

  Dear Community, I encountered several problems when installing Ubuntu on my new Lenovo G500 laptop. First I bumped in the problem (also reported by many other) of the black screen after booting Ubuntu. This problem I recould solve by changing the "quiet splash" record of GRUB to "nomodeset". Ubuntu install was successful then. After the installation, I had a black screen again when booting up for the first time. I booted up again with "nomodeset", and enabled the external AMD driver at Hardware Drivers. Booting still do not worked (only with nomodeset), and when I log in, the system gives me a "System program problem detected" message, and the system (desktop) does not load in. Please, can you advise me what to do? Shall I re-install Ubuntu? What are the steps to make my ubuntu work with this harver? Hardware: LENOVO G500 with IntelCore i5-3230M 3,2Ghz processor and AMD Radeon HD8570 integrated chip Thank you for your help in advance!

• Python or HTML5/JS for game development on 2014 [on hold]

  So I've decided to give game development a go. I have experience on php/html/css/sql/js(jquery) so learning a new language shouldn't be as hard. I was reading that python and javascript are both nice for simple 2d non-intensive games. I found that python has this library/engine called PyGame but I realized that it was last updated 4 years ago. People still use this? And for javascript, I found libraries like 'pixi.js', 'melon.js' and 'cocos2d'. My goal is to make 2D games that would require the same performance as terraria, realm of the mad god, castle crashers.. and all those types of games. Taking into consideration, that I do want an updated library, what language of this two would be best to choose and what library to grab for it? Thanks in advance, sorry if question is broad. • How can I solve display glitches and poor performance with ATI fglrx driver on my ThinkPad X100e?

  I noticed that video performance on my Thinkpad X100e was very poor compared to Windows 7, so I installed the ATI fglrx proprietary drivers by using the "Additional Drivers" dialogue box. The system has an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3200 chip. The result of installing the drivers is pretty devastatingly negative, with symptoms such as skewed content in windows, browser tabs and text boxes failing to refresh when their content changes. In fact, please excuse typos in this post, because I can't really see what I am typing. :) I also notice that HD video playback performance is no better - perhaps even worse - than prior to installing the drivers. • Ubuntu GUI crash when LightDM enters, unable to login

  This issue happened spounteniously, i don´t know what could have cause it as i wasn´t using the PC when it happened. I ruled out any messing around with the setting as the user doesn´t know how to enter the BIOS, doesn´t have the sudo password and was only using firefox and libreoffice when it happened. The issue persist after rebooting. I choose the other options to see if anything happens, i either get back to option 1 or doesn´t show anything anormal. (I have pictures i someone wants to know) What i found weird is that event though the error is possitioned in the chip, however ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 run fine in a live CD I saw that some people are having issues when LightDM has a non default wallpaper, but i use a default one. • Which Game Engine to Use for an Angry Bird style game? [JAVA] [on hold]

  Our team is building an Angry Bird Style game, and we have only about ten days. The game is a little more complex than Angry Bird because there are two players, they each have a castle with pigs to protect(not destroy:)). And the goal is to destroy the other player's pigs. I wonder what Game Engine would help us finish this game most efficiently. We at least need a physics engine but I guess game engine is more helpful since it usually includes physics engine. Correct me if I'm wrong. (So I'm wondering which game engine I should use, if it's just physics engine, I'll use box2d) Networking may or may not be added later depend on time we have. • Session Report - Java on the Raspberry Pi

  On mid-day Wednesday, the always colorful Oracle Evangelist Simon Ritter demonstrated Java on the Raspberry Pi at his session, “Do You Like Coffee with Your Dessert?”. The Raspberry Pi consists of a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools. “I don't think there is a single feature that makes the Raspberry Pi significant,” observed Ritter, “but a combination of things really makes it stand out. First, it's $35 for what is effectively a completely usable computer. You do have to add a power supply, SD card for storage and maybe a screen, keyboard and mouse, but this is still way cheaper than a typical PC. The choice of an ARM (Advanced RISC Machine and Acorn RISC Machine) processor is noteworthy, because it avoids problems like cooling (no heat sink or fan) and can use a USB power brick. When you add in the enormous community support, it offers a great platform for teaching everyone about computing.”Some 200 enthusiastic attendees were present at the session which had the feel of Simon Ritter sharing a fun toy with friends. The main point of the session was to show what Oracle was doing to support Java on the Raspberry Pi in a way that is entertaining and fun. Ritter pointed out that, in addition to being great for teaching, it’s an excellent introduction to the ARM architecture, and runs well with Java and will get better once it has official hard float support. The possibilities are vast.Ritter explained that the Raspberry Pi Project started in 2006 with the goal of devising a computer to inspire children; it drew inspiration from the BBC Micro literacy project of 1981 that produced a series of microcomputers created by the Acorn Computer company. It was officially launched on February 29, 2012, with a first production of 10,000 boards. There were 100,000 pre-orders in one day; currently about 4,000 boards are produced a day. I've dynamically built a mesh from a volume of cubes, and now I'm looking into reducing the number of vertices built into each mesh, as right now, I'm "rendering" vertices and triangles for cubes that are fully hidden within the larger voxel volume. The simple solution is to check each of the 6 directions for each cube, and only add the face to the mesh if the neighboring voxel in that direction is "empty". Parsing a voxel volume is BigO(N^3), and checking the 6 neighbors keeps it BigO(7*N^3)-BigO(N^3). The one thing this results in is a lot of redundant calls, as the same voxel will be polled up to 7 times, just to build the mesh. My question, then, is: Is there a way to parse a cubic volume (and find which faces have neighbors) with fewer redundant calls? And perhaps more importantly, does it matter (as BigO complexity is the same in both cases)?

• Lost the config of my monitor once I connected it to a KVM switch.

  I used to have a monitor (Acer 20", AL2017) connected to the external video port of my laptop. Everything was great and I could get a rather high resolution available when setting it under Ubuntu (all versions). But since I connected it to a KVM, the monitor is no more recognized, and I cannot go beyond 1024x768. My video adapter is an Intel chipset 9xx from an older Pentium Core 2 Duo laptop. The same monitor, using another video chipset (Intel 82G33/G31 rev 02) is properly detected through the switch box. Looks to me like the video chipset is not the best, and I can live with this. I see that I have no xorg.conf, and I understand that I would need to generate one so I can then use it to force the available modes on the X system. How can I generate the xorg.conf file for my Intel video chip, so I can use it then ? Merci :-)

• Licensing Theme Music from other games

  As part of my game, I thought it would be fun to make a hidden level that pays tribute to Mario Bros (one of the earliest games I ever played). It would be themed in that way with 8-bit graphics and question mark blocks and completing the level would say "Thank you but the princess is in another castle" or such. For the sound track, I'm thinking of just overlaying the standard mario theme music by playing it on a virtual keyboard using a different instrument/timing or something. My question is, am I legally safe? I'm not using anyone else's actual music, I'm just playing the same tune in a different way myself. Do I have to get licensing for this?

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Realtek RTL8192E Problems

  My wifi is not working. I have tried ndiswrapper with the XP driver but that still did not work. Please explain to me in layman's terms. I can run commands so if you tell me exactly what to put, i will put it. Basically, ubuntu is not showing a wireless networks option and when I ran some command yesterday it said the driver was UNCLAIMED. Please help. This is a wintec card with realtek rtl8192E chip on it. It is a desktop computer. On a 20gb partition, other 60gb is for windows(yeah its an old desktop). Use windows installer to install ubuntu(this is one of the dell desktops that wont boot ubuntu from disk). So any help is appreciated and I would like to get this done THIS weekend.

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86_64 sound artifacts when scrolling with firefox

  I've been using Ubuntu since the 10.04 LTS version and i have a sound problem that still remain in my fresh install of the 12.04 LTS AMD64 version. This install has been performed by formatting the / partition and my documents were kept safe in the separated /home partition. The problem : When i listen to a audio or video source while browsing the web with Firefox, I have some sound artifacts when i'm scrolling and stops when i'm not doing it. This happens when i'm doing X11 related actions too, such as switching between virtuals desktops. Computer configuration of my laptop : - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD64 - Plantronic USB Headphones - Intel HDA Audio sound card (laptop) with SigmaTel STAC9200 chip - AlsaMixer v 1.0.25 - Nvidia GeForce 7950 GTX with Nvidia 295.40 driver Any advices are welcome here :) Note : This is my first post on AskUbuntu.

• Connection manager detects network but won't connect

  I've just installed 12.04 on my home desktop. Because of where it's located, in order not to have my children tripping over cat5 cable, I've got a cheap 802.11n USB device plugged in, which uses a Realtek 8192CU chip. The house wifi is protected with WPA2. Ubuntu's Network Manager detects the network, but connecting to it just times out and asks for the password again. I'm sure I'm using the correct password. No other computers on the house network are having any difficulty. This device previously worked correctly with both Windows 7 and OpenBSD in the same machine. The linux-firmware package is installed (from the disc) at version 1.79, and /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin is present. dmesg|grep rtl only shows the "loading firmware" message. I've tried Google, but I apparently can't find the right set of words to plug in, because I haven't found anything related (lots of "doesn't work at all," but nothing matching my circumstances). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Video crashes with 10.10

  I have installed both the 64bit and 32 bit versions of 10.10 on my Compaq Presario PC. I first installed the 64 bit version of the OS.The video often crashed when switching user. It also went haywire occasionally when I visited some web-sites. I read that there may be some problems with the 64 bit OS. So I installed the 32 bit version on another disk. This version seemed even less well behaved. HP's model number for the computer is SR1838NX. The hardware is listed at http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00628274&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=1841793&prodTypeId=12454&printver=true#A0 I think the important info is that the chip set is "ATI Radeon Xpress 200" and the processor is "Athlon 64 (S) 3700+ 2.2 GHz" Has anyone else had video problems with similar machines? Is there a work around or an update? I have had previous versions of Ubuntu working on this machine and other flavors of Linux as well. Thanks in advance. John

• Headset undetected when plugged in

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my machine which was running windows 7. I have been trying to configure the audio to work exactly as it used to work in Windows but never been able to do so. I have followed this link exactly. I am still not getting the required configuration. aslamixer command shows me with 5 adjustable controls as shown below Master "adjustable" Speaker "adjustable" PCM "adjustable" Front "adjustable" AND Beep "adjustable" Mic Jack Mic In or Lin In S/PDIF OO "in a box" S/PDIF D OO "in a box" S/PDIF P DIGITAL or Analog M It does not detect the headset jack when plugged in. I here mean to say that the sound form the speakers does not go off when I plug in my headset jack. How can I make this working. Some other googling also did not help. I am on Hp Pavilion DV7 machine. The chip is IDT 92HD75B3X5 and the card is HDA ATI SB.

• Analog and digital audio output at the same time

  My speakers use a digital input, but my headphones use an analog input. I have them both plugged in, and when I want to use the headphones I just turn off the speakers and switch on the headphones. I know that simultaneous output on digital and analog is supported by the hardware, because it worked fine in Windows XP. But on Ubuntu, I seem to only get one at a time, depending on which setting is selected in the combo box located at System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware. How can I get simultaneous analog and digital output without having to switch the profile every time? I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and it's an HDA Intel chip.

• Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

  I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

• Ubuntu and Surface Pro, wifi issues not fixed?

  Just a quick question, from the numerous other threads I found, is the wifi still a no go straight out of installing Ubuntu? I tried this Dual boot Surface Pro with Ubuntu? with 13.04, the wifi is sporadic in working. From that and other threads I gathered that 13.10 would include the fix, so I tossed that onto the Surface as well, with the same results. Is there anything I am missing? Is there any other distro that has better luck with the Marvell chip?

• Turning off the backlight on the console

  I'm using an IBM Thinkpad X21 as a 3G router. It's running a server install of lucid. The laptop has the lid up most of the time. There is no X, just a plain console. The colsole blanks itself, but the LCD backlight is always on. The graphics chip is ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64). The following modules related to the framebuffer are now loaded: $ lsmod | grep fb fbcon 35102 71 tileblit 2031 1 fbcon font 7557 1 fbcon bitblit 4707 1 fbcon vga16fb 11385 1 vgastate 8961 1 vga16fb Can I make the LCD backlight turn off when the colsole is unused and have it turn on automatically when needed?
