• Win7 Domain User Profile- Desktop Icon management best practices request

  Here's the situation: We have a large (5,000+ user) organization that is currently using folder redirection to manage the windows desktop icons. This folder is redirected to a network share where we can centrally manage the different sites and such. When a user tries to use a computer when the network is not available, they are unable to use any shortcuts in the Public folder. We only redirect the C:\Users\%username%\Desktop folder. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to go about managing desktop icons? We still want a central location to manage these items, but find a way to keep the system working when the network is unavailable. As a point of clarification, the network rarely goes down. We do have instances where a few computers do not have a network connection. Usually, something is simply unplugged. Since we have multiple sites, the line from a branch to the central office has gone down a few times. This is more of an attempt to maintain a positive end user experience when disconnected from the network.

  Is there a way to display User fields under a form that adds/edits a UserProfile model? I am extending default Django User model like this: class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, unique=True) about = models.TextField(blank=True) I know that it is possible to make a: class UserProfileInlineAdmin(admin.TabularInline): and then inline this in User ModelAdmin but I want to achieve the opposite effect, something like inverse inlining, displaying the fields of the model pointed by the OneToOne Relationship (User) in the page of the model defining the relationship (UserProfile). I don't care if it would be in the admin or in a custom view/template. I just need to know how to achieve this. I've been struggling with ModelForms and Formsets, I know the answer is somewhere there, but my little experience in Django doesn't allow me to come up with the solution yet. A little example would be really helpful!

• ASP.NET and WIF: Showing custom profile username as User.Identity.Name

  I am building ASP.NET MVC application that uses external services to authenticate users. For ASP.NET users are fully authenticated when they are redirected back from external service. In system they are logically authenticated when they have created user profiles. In this posting I will show you how to force ASP.NET MVC controller actions to demand existence of custom user profiles. Using external authentication sources with AppFabric Suppose you want to be user-friendly and you don’t force users to keep in mind another username/password when they visit your site. You can accept logins from different popular sites like Windows Live, Facebook, Yahoo, Google and many more. If user has account in some of these services then he or she can use his or her account to log in to your site. If you have community site then you usually have support for user profiles too. Some of these providers give you some information about users and other don’t. So only thing in common you get from all those providers is some unique ID that identifies user in service uniquely. Image above shows you how new user joins your site. Existing users who already have profile are directed to users homepage after they are authenticated. You can read more about how to solve semi-authorized users problem from my blog posting ASP.NET MVC: Using ProfileRequiredAttribute to restrict access to pages. The other problem is related to usernames that we don’t get from all identity providers. Why is IIdentity.Name sometimes empty? The problem is described more specifically in my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Shortly the problem is that not all providers have claim called http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claims/name. The following diagram illustrates what happens when user got token from AppFabric ACS and was redirected to your site. Now, when user was authenticated using Windows Live ID then we don’t have name claim in token and that’s why User.Identity.Name is empty. Okay, we can force nameidentifier to be used as name (we can do it in web.config file) but we have user profiles and we want username from profile to be shown when username is asked. Modifying name claim Now let’s force IClaimsIdentity to use username from our user profiles. You can read more about my profiles topic from my blog posting ASP.NET MVC: Using ProfileRequiredAttribute to restrict access to pages and you can find some useful extension methods for claims identity from my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Here is what we do to set User.Identity.Name: we will check if user has profile, if user has profile we will check if User.Identity.Name matches the name given by profile, if names does not match then probably identity provider returned some name for user, we will remove name claim and recreate it with correct username, we will add new name claim to claims collection. All this stuff happens in Application_AuthorizeRequest event of our web application. Conclusion Mixing AppFabric Access Control Service and Windows Identity Foundation with custom authorization logic is not impossible but a little bit tricky.   We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones. • User unable to delete folder / files "File in use by another user" Server 2003

  I am administering a standalone Windows 2003 Terminal Server with no domain membership. Occasionally (about once a week or so) a user will attempt to delete a sub-folder in a Shared folder and gets denied with "File in use by another user". I tried checking the shared folder snap-in and that folder is not open. She has full control and is the owner of the folder as well. I even checked in "Effective permissions" for some of the folders / files she cant delete and she truly has full control. I am able to delete the folder as Administrator with no problem. Another odd thing, she can delete the files IN the folder most of the time (this issue happens on both folders and files in the share). Sometimes merely waiting a day or two will allow her to delete the folder or files. I am curious as to why she gets the message that it is in use as creator/owner with full control yet I don't get it simply as a member of the Admin group. If anyone out there has any ideas I'd love to hear them! THANK YOU.

  I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

  I want to create a user account for each of the key programs installed on my debian server. For example, for the following programs: Tomcat Nginx Supervisor PostgreSQL This seems to be recommended based on my reading online. However, I want to restrict these user accounts as much as possible, so that they dont have a shell login, dont have access to the other programs and are as limited as possible but still functional. Would anyone mind telling me how this could be achieved? • SSH keys fail for one user

  I just set up a new Debian server. I disabled root SSH and password auth, so you've gotta use a key file. For my primary user, everything works exactly as expected. I used ssh-keygen -t dsa and got myself a public and private key. Put one in authorized keys, put the other in a pem file locally. I wanted to create a user that I can deploy things with, so I did basically the same process. I addusered it, made a .ssh folder, ran ssh-keygen -t dsa (I also tried RSA), put the keys in their appropriate locations. No luck. I'm getting a Permission denied (publickey) error. When I use the exact same keys as the account that works, same error. When I enable password authentication, I can log in via SSH with the password. How do I debug this?

  When installing Windows 7 using WDS, a local user account is used during the set up after the main image of Win7 is installed. And I've got this application that lies on the network and not the deploymentshare itself that I want to install. But logically I get no access to that share via the local user account. Is it possible to do this somehow? Or do I have to move the Share to the Deployment share? Or possibly map the share to a separate drive or something?

  I'm going to re-build a very old Lotus Notes infrastructure coming from 4.x towards 8.5. I'm trying to setup Domino so that all user names should be of a single string or the internet e-mail address. For example the user "John Smith/ACME" should be in the whole system jsmith or [email protected] . I still get jsmith/ACME all around. Where it is most annoying is in the NAB when creating a new message. Is there a way to get all addresses in uniform standard e-mail adress format at least in mail ? The mixup in the destination like "John Smith/ACME, [email protected]" confused the users.

  I'm nearly finished setting up my Open Directory master to allow users to be managed centrally and logged in on any of the client machines at home. I found discussion suggesting that using an AFP share for the 'Users' automount would result in network users (cf. users defined locally, or Portable Home Directory users) are unable to use fast user switching, as the first user logging in would trigger the automount and mount the 'Users' share with his permissions, preventing further users from using the mount. I've also found some suggestions to configure autofs such that the 'Users' share is mounted prior to any user logging in, but not great amounts of details along these lines. I'd greatly appreciate some instructions to set up autofs - ideally, on the OpenDirectory server rather than each client's etc/fstab or equivalent location, so that it isn't required per every client machine - to get fast user switching working with network users.

• Odd domain switching behavior in Firefox and Chrome

  We have different development severs and a production server. Testing is done in the development servers. As a QA engineer, I'm switching between these servers quite often throughout the day. In Chrome, sometimes I need to reload a page a few times to get it to pull from the newly switched server. In Firefox, sometimes I need to quit the browser in order to get it to pull from the newly switched server. (We have small tags that indicate which server you are pulling from, which is how I know in-browser.) Why does that happen? I'd love to know how that happens (maybe what it's called?) and what the best way to deal with it is. (I know that Firefox has an extension for domain switching; is that the best solution?)

  I have one user account on a server with about 400 accounts that is filling up automatically. The dead.letter file in the users home directory automatically grows until the account is full (about 10 - 40 Mb per day). The user is using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive mail. What can be causing this and how can I avoid it from happening? Right now I have an emergency cron-job to delete the file but I would like "real" solution. Edit: The server version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4) Edit 2: It seems mainly spam and I see different mailer headings (from php to Outlook Express) and a frequent appearing header is [email protected] Update: I have asked the hosting provider where I use that dedicated server to look into the problem as well, as it's their Control Panel that could be a cause of the problem.

  Hello, I currently have a problem I was unable to solve concerning Sharepoint. One of our user is seeing every file on Sharepoint as being from around 1938. The Created and Last Modified field are affected. When the user saves a file on his computer, the date is correct. If I log on his computer, the date are fine. If he log on my computer, the date are wrong once again, so it is linked to its Sharepoint account. The day and month are wrong to, but files uploaded 3 days apart are still 3 days apart for him. I don't see how anything could affect a date like that... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, PS: Destroying his account and give him a new one is not a solution for now. He has been in this company for a long time and he has a lot of rights inherited from Sharepoint 2003 that are complicated to create.

  Is there a way to tell if an iOS app enters the foreground from fast-app switching or manually? I need to know by the time applicationWillEnterForeground is called, so some specific code can be executed (or not executed) depending on the condition in which the app entered the foreground. EDIT: It turned out that this was more of a design issue for me. I moved my code to applicationDidBecomeActive. I also added a BOOL property to the appDelegate called fastAppSwitching (probably the wrong name for it). I set this to YES in application:handleOpenURL and application:openURL:sourceApplication:annotation. • Switching to workspaces view shows buggy blue background

  When switching to workspaces view everything the background turns blue. Same happens when I switch between multiple windows of the same app too. Happening after having a try with gnome shell out of curiosity. Installed through official repos like normal. Tried it out but switched back, anyone have an idea of why this is happening? Got an Intel GPU and Unity 3d. If anyone can give me some direction, thanks a lot. • Switching mdadm to an external bitmap

  I've just read this in another post about improving RAID5/6 write speeds: After increasing stripe cache & switching to external bitmap, my speeds are 160 Mb/s writes, 260 Mb/s reads. :-D I've already found out how to increase the stripe cache and this worked pretty well but I'd like to know more about an external bitmap. I have an incredibly fast (540MB/s) RAID0 SSD that would do well if a bitmap does what I think it does but I'm still very unsure. I've only known about them as long as I've known this post. A few questions: What is a bitmap (in terms of mdadm)? What are the advantages of an internal bitmap (over external)? What are the advantages of an external bitmap (over internal)? How do I switch between the two? I should add that while this is a I'm-bored-let's-break-something thread, I do value the data stored on the RAID array. If doing this is going to put data at significant risk, please let me know.

• Dualboot (Win 8 / Ubuntu 13) is stuck at 'switching to clocksource'

  for days I have been crawling the web for solutions to my problem, but couln't find any. Here it is: I got a new Laptop (ASUS Vivobook S200E) with Win 8 OEM preinstalled. I wanted to create a dual-boot system with Ubuntu 13 next to it. I read about UEFI and that I have to turn of Secure Boot and use the existing EFI partition as bootloader for Ubuntu. So I did. I also ran boot-repair reinstalling the GRUB. The result is when I start the computer I get into the boot menu. So far, so good. When I pick Win everthing is fine. But when I choose Ubuntu (recovery) the system starts, but gets stuck at the line '[1.806366] Switching to clocksource tsc'. I already tried other versions of Ubuntu (12.04.2, 12.10). I played with boot-repair (using the recommended fix, setting everything manually). But nothing works. It's always the same issue. I read that it could be a problem concerning graphic drivers, but this I can hardly believe. When windows 8 was roling out i was like i'm never going to leave and will be always stick to windows8 but now i think it's time to switch linux because being in windows forever i don't think i can do something very good .I wanted to be OpenSource :) . So i really dont have any idea about linux . For me the best distro is Ubuntu and Kubuntu offcourse the latest release . So what i'm afraid of switching to linux is its compability .The compatibility i'm talking about is with the hardware's and driver's . For eg sometime after fresh install of windows we need to install the display,usb and wifi drivers to function . For some computer or brands those driver's are hard to find and i can't even think of linux how hard are they to find if it needs installing drivers. So my main question is that do i need to install the drivers for my wifi adapters display and some other stuffs or the distro i choosed i.e Ubuntu 14.0.4 consists of those dirvers and what about the 64 and 32bit . My machines is 64bit aso do i need to install the 64bit one . I mean i know the advantages of installing the 64 bit one but like windows is it kinda hard to find softwares for the 64 bit one . Or the 32 bit is recommended . And Yes I will be highly appreciated for the answers to my questions . Thank You :)
