  • What does a status of "Backup" mean for Windows 7 local user profiles?

    Summary: Upon logging on to Windows 7 RTM I get a message that my profile can't be loaded and a temporary user profile is created. I logged off and back on as Administrator. The user profiles dialog shows my user profile with a Type of "Local" and a Status of "Backup" rather than "Local" which it should be. How can I change this to make my user profile accessible? The long story: My PC has a single hard drive partitioned into a C: and a D:. I'd moved my user profile directory (c:\Users) to d:\Users, removed c:\Users and then used mklink.exe to create a directory symbolic link c:\Users -- d:\Users. Worked like a charm since I did it. Today, I make a System Restore Point for drives C: and D:. Next, I dismounted D: and used the Disk Management tool to remove the "D:" drive letter from the D volume. (My plan was to reboot and then redirect the symbolic link.) Upon reboot, I got the user profile error described above. Finally, I restored the System Restore Points that I'd created for both drives and then rebooted again. Same issue.

  • Making user input/math on data fast, unlike excel type programs

    I'm creating a research platform solely for myself to do some research on data. Programs like excel are terribly slow for me so I'm trying to come up with another solution. Originally I used excel. A1 was the cell that contained the data and all other cells in use calculated something on A1, or on other cells, that all could be in the end traced to A1. A1 was like an element of an array, I then I incremented it to go through all my data. This was way too slow. So the only other option I found originally was to hand code in c# the calculations inside a loop. Then I simply recompiled each time I changed my math. This was terribly slow to do and I had to order everything correctly so things would update correctly (dependencies). I could have also used events, but hand coding events for each cell like calculation would also be very slow. Next I created an application to read Excel and to perfectly imitate it. Which is what I now use. Basically I write formulas onto a fraction of my data to get live results inside excel. Then my program reads excel, writes another c# program, compiles it, and runs that program which runs my excel created formulas through a lot more data a whole lot faster. The advantage being my application dependency sorts everything (or I could use events) so I don't have to (like excel does) And of course the speed. But now its not a single application anymore. Instead its 2 applications, one which only reads my formulas and writes another program. The other one being the result which only lives for a short while before I do other runs through my data with different formulas / settings. So I can't see multiple results at one time without introducing even more programs like a database or at least having the 2 applications talking to each other. My idea was to have a dll that would be written, compiled, loaded, and unloaded again and again. So a self-updating program, sort of. But apparently that's not possible without another appdomain which means data has to be marshaled to be moved between the appdomains. Which would slow things down, not for summaries, but for other stuff I need to do with all my data. I'm also forgetting to mention a huge problem with restarting an application again and again which is having to reload ALL my data into memory again and again. But its still a whole lot faster than excel. I'm really super puzzled as to what people do when they want to research data fast. I'm completely unable to have a program accept user input and having it fast. My understanding is that it would have to do things like excel which is to evaluate strings again and again. So my only option is to repeatedly compile applications. Do I have a correct understanding on computer science? I've only just began programming, and didn't think I would have to learn much to do some simple math on data. My understanding is its either compiling my user defined stuff to a program or evaluating them from a string or something stupid again and again. And my only option is to probably switch operating systems or something to be able to have a program compile and run itself without stopping (writing/compiling dll, loading dll to program, unloading, and repeating). Can someone give me some idea on how computers work? Is anything better possible? Like a running program, that can accept user input and compile it and then unload it later? I mean heck operating systems dont need to be RESTARTED with every change to user input. What is this the cave man days? Sorry, it's just so super frustrating not knowing what one can do, and can't do. If only I could understand and learn this stuff fast enough.

  • Help with storing/accessing user access roles C# Winforms

    Hello, firstly I would like to thank you in advance for any assistance provided. I am new to software development and have designed several Client/Server applications over the last 12 months or so, I am currently working on a project that involves a user logging in to gain access to the application and I am looking at the most efficient and "simple" method of storing the users permissions once logged in to the application which can be used throughout restricting access to certain tabs on the main form. I have created a static class called "User" detailed below: static class User { public static int _userID; public static string _moduleName; public static string _userName; public static object[] UserData(object[] _dataRow) { _userID = (int)_dataRow[0]; _userName = (string)_dataRow[1]; _moduleName = (string)_dataRow[2]; return _moduleName; } } When the user logs in and they have been authenticated, I wish to store the _moduleName objects in memory so I can control which tabs on the main form tab control they can access, for example; if the user has been assigned the following roles in the database: "Sales Ledger", "Purchase Ledger" they can only see the relevant tabs on the form, by way of using a Switch - Case block once the login form is hidden and the main form is instantiated.   • Reducing video mode switching during Linux boot

    When I boot up my desktop computer, which only has Linux on it, the video mode and/or console font gets switched four times: When GRUB starts, it switches from 80x25 text to a graphical mode so it can draw a pretty background behind its menu; GRUB then goes back to 80x25 text after I pick something from the menu; When the KMS driver for my video card loads, it switches to a much higher-resolution text mode (I don't know if this is a hardware text mode or not); Finally X starts and it goes graphics and stays that way. I think this last switch does not change the resolution of the video mode, only the graphicalness. I'd like to get rid of as many of these mode switches as possible. Ideally, when GRUB takes over from the BIOS it would go directly to the same high-resolution text mode that the KMS driver selects, and the display would stay in that mode till X starts and brings up graphics. I am under the impression that this is possible by mucking with the kernel command line and/or the GRUB console module load parameters, but I don't know the details. GRUB 1.98+20100706, kernel 2.6.32.15 using Nouveau video drivers. Distro is Debian unstable. Please no answers that involve recompiling anything or cobbling together bleeding-edge kernel/driver combinations, I don't care enough about this to go to that much trouble. EDIT: Tobu suggests setting GRUB_GFXMODE to the full pixel resolution of the monitor, and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep to avoid the mode switch after the menu goes away. This does part of what I want, but winds up being worse overall. There's no mode switch after the menu, but there's still a painfully-slow screen repaint (I should probably just give up on GRUB's gfxmode, it's waaaay too slow at 1920x1200).   • Vista Screen resolution Changes when Switching Users

    I regularly have a problem when switching between users in Vista - the screen resolution drops down to 800x600. If I try to set the resolution back to the maximum, it says nothing, but just keeps it at 800x600. I can set it back to an intermediate value. Otherwise I have to either restart the PC, or sometimes if I log off one of the users, I can then set the resolution back to max. Might it also have something to do with using sleep mode instead of performing regular shutdowns? I thought it might be related to the desktop background image taking up too much space, but even with plain colours, the problem still occurs. There is an enormous thread on this here, but not really any answers. From what I can gather from that thread, it isn't related to any particular applications, nor limited to a particular make of graphics card or monitor, so I don't think that including hardware details is useful. This is a very annoying problem, as it screws up my desktop and screen layout every single time. Has anyone here experienced this problem or found a solution? I've noticed that Windows Update has tried to install nVidia updates and apparently they've failed on several occasions. Not sure if that is of any relevance or not. UPDATE The last post on the thread: FWIW - I had this problem for about 2 years and wrote a number of posts in this thread in the past. It survived OS reinstallation, change of practically all of my hardware piece by piece (mobo, cpu, monitor, graphics card, memory, power supply...) I used to be affected by this annoying problem at least once every 24-48 hours. About 1.5 months ago I wiped out my 32 bit vista ultimate installation and installed Windows7 ultimate 64 bit from scratch and never saw this problem again. GOOD RIDDANCE. Vista was a pathetic piece of __ that felt like a flashback to the old [horrible] NT4/Windows95 days. I was seriously considering switching over to Apple/Mac OSX if this problem persisted.

    Agile software development relies heavily on a work item type called user stories. For example, you have a backlog full of user stories and you can select a few of them to work on during the next sprint. But where and how do you find user stories to put into the backlog? There is a popular technique for doing that called story mapping. Jeff Patton invented it and here is the definitive guide on how to do it. The question is, what electronic tools are out there that support Patton's story-mapping technique? I've done a bit of research, found Pivotal and Rally plug-ins (but I'm not a customer of either) and I'm currently experimenting with SilverStories. What other tools are out there? What have you used? What do you (not) recommend? Why? UPDATE: Some people who wrote comments seem to lean towards an answer that applying this technique is simply impossible with an electronic tool and we should just accept that. Can't someone write it up as an answer?

  • Server 2003 on domain wont let domain user have local profile

    I have a few servers that are acting in this behavior, you log in and always get put into a temporary profile. The server is licensed for TS. The user I am testing with has local admin rights so it doesn't seem to be a permission issue on the server. I'll first get a message that the users roaming profile cannot be found, even though we dont use roaming profiles. I then get another message immediately after saying a local profile could not be loaded, so it will only use a temp profile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • MySQL and User level logging

    I have been looking at logging only certain users activity in MySQL. I found that the logging could be enabled or disabled for all users but one of the service using the db does a lot of queries and therefore I would like to only log specific users. Google told me that a flag can be SET to enable disable logging, however, I cannot modify the service DB connection code and asking every single user to enable logging before they do anything might not be as reliable as I want. So, do you know if there is any way to log only a set of users queries ? Thanks !

    I am putting together a test environment using Amazon's EC2 for me and some friends to collaborate on a project. I am not a server guy but I do know my way around a bash prompt and have done some work on ubuntu before. I am using Amazon Linux AMI i386 EBS and have gotten apache and php running. Now I need to create the user accounts my friends and I will use to upload files (sftp) and work on the project (ssh). How should I go about this? Should I just use adduser and configure it like normal? Or should I use the AWS IAM groups?

    hi all.. Consider two php scripts(o.php & t.php) o.php contains both html and php. html here gets user input for eg:user name and password this information is passed to php using php-self. I want the user input of o.php passed to t.php without any modification in o.php. I ve used include and require in the t.php but the problem is it displays the output of o.php but i need only the user input values from o.php without displaying the output of o.php. Using functions or session in o.php we can pass user input but am in the situation tat i should not add or modify o.php. thanks in advance!!

    Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. Switching Between Templates All of the magic happens in the default.js file. The default.js file contains the JavaScript code used to switch templates dynamically. Using Binding Converters instead of Multiple Templates In the previous sections, I explained how you can use different templates to render normal products and on sale products. There is an alternative approach to displaying different markup for normal products and on sale products. Instead of creating two templates, you can create a single template which contains separate DIV elements for a normal product and an on sale product. "block" : "none"; }) }); app.start(); })(); The ListViewDemos.displayNormalProduct binding converter converts the value true or false to the value “none” or “block”. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.

  • Metro: Dynamically Switching Templates with a WinJS ListView

    Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. (function () { "use strict"; var products = new WinJS.Binding.List([ { name: "Milk", price: 2.44 }, { name: "Oranges", price: 1.99, onSale: true }, { name: "Wine", price: 8.55 }, { name: "Apples", price: 2.44, onSale: true }, { name: "Steak", price: 1.99 }, { name: "Eggs", price: 2.44 }, { name: "Mushrooms", price: 1.99 }, { name: "Yogurt", price: 2.44 }, { name: "Soup", price: 1.99 }, { name: "Cereal", price: 2.44 }, { name: "Pepsi", price: 1.99 } ]); WinJS.Namespace.define("ListViewDemos", { products: products }); })(); The file above is saved with the name products.js and referenced by the default.html page described below. Declaring the Templates and ListView Control Next, we need to declare the ListView control and the two Template controls which we will use to display template items. The first template is used when rendering a normal product and the second template is used when rendering a product which is on sale. The second template, unlike the first template, includes the text “(On Sale!)”. The ListView control is bound to the data source which we created in the previous section. The ListView itemDataSource property is set to the value ListViewDemos.products.dataSource. Notice that we do not set the ListView itemTemplate property. We set this property in the default.js file. Switching Between Templates All of the magic happens in the default.js file. The default.js file contains the JavaScript code used to switch templates dynamically. Here’s the entire contents of the default.js file: (function () { "use strict"; var app = WinJS.Application; app.onactivated = function (eventObject) { if (eventObject.detail.kind === Windows.ApplicationModel.Activation.ActivationKind.launch) { WinJS.UI.processAll().then(function () { var productsListView = document.getElementById("productsListView"); productsListView.winControl.itemTemplate = itemTemplateFunction; });; } }; function itemTemplateFunction(itemPromise) { return itemPromise.then(function (item) { // Select either normal product template or on sale template var itemTemplate = document.getElementById("productItemTemplate"); if (item.data.onSale) { itemTemplate = document.getElementById("productOnSaleTemplate"); }; // Render selected template to DIV container var container = document.createElement("div"); itemTemplate.winControl.render(item.data, container); return container; }); } app.start(); })(); In the code above, a function is assigned to the ListView itemTemplate property with the following line of code: productsListView.winControl.itemTemplate = itemTemplateFunction;   The itemTemplateFunction returns a DOM element which is used for the template item. Depending on the value of the product onSale property, the DOM element is generated from either the productItemTemplate or the productOnSaleTemplate template. Using Binding Converters instead of Multiple Templates In the previous sections, I explained how you can use different templates to render normal products and on sale products. There is an alternative approach to displaying different markup for normal products and on sale products. Instead of creating two templates, you can create a single template which contains separate DIV elements for a normal product and an on sale product. These data-win-bind attributes are used to show the “normal” template when a product is not on sale and show the “on sale” template when a product is on sale. These attributes set the Cascading Style Sheet display attribute to either “none” or “block”. The data-win-bind attributes take advantage of binding converters. The binding converters are defined in the default.js file: (function () { "use strict"; var app = WinJS.Application; app.onactivated = function (eventObject) { if (eventObject.detail.kind === Windows.ApplicationModel.Activation.ActivationKind.launch) { WinJS.UI.processAll(); } }; WinJS.Namespace.define("ListViewDemos", { displayNormalProduct: WinJS.Binding.converter(function (onSale) { return onSale ? "none" : "block"; }), displayOnSaleProduct: WinJS.Binding.converter(function (onSale) { return onSale ? "block" : "none"; }) }); app.start(); })(); The ListViewDemos.displayNormalProduct binding converter converts the value true or false to the value “none” or “block”. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.

  • How to keep the session of user login?

    Hi, I have an app that requires user to register. I've got the app conected to PHP in my server to do the logic of register/login and so, this is not problem at all. But, I want to keep a session of the user in local, so the user doesn't have to login again every time he runs the app. So, I want something like this: First time user, he opens the app, register and login. Do some stuff with the app and closes it. Open the app again, the user is recognized so he doesn't need to login again. I only need to store an ID and a Username (both fetched from the DB in the login php method). What's the best way to do this?? I've thought about doing a custom preference, store the data in files or even a local DB (sqlite). Any suggestions?

  • Should I use a separate 'admin' user as my "root sudo" or grant sudo to my 'app' user?

    I'm still wrapping my brain around the Ubuntu 'nullify root' user management philosophy (and Linux in general) and I'm wondering if I should 'replace' my root user with a user called 'admin' (which basically has all the powers of the root, when using sudo) and create another user called 'app' that will be the primary user for my app. Here's the context: I'll be running a LNMP stack on Ubuntu 12.04 Server LTS. There will be only one app running on the server. The 'app' user needs to have SUPER privileges for MySQL. PHP will need to be able to exec() shell commands. The 'app' user will need to be able to transfer files via SFTP. And I'm thinking this would be the best approach: nullify 'root' user create a user called 'admin' that will be a full sudoer of root, this will be the new "root" user of NGINX, PHP, and MySQL (and all system software) grant SUPER privileges to 'app' in MySQL Grant SFTP privileges to only the 'app' user. As I'm new to this, and the information I've found in researching it tends to be of a more general nature, I'm wondering if this is a solid approach, or if it's unorthodox in a way that would cause issues down the road. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • TechEd 2012: Fast SQL Server

    While I spend a certain amount of my time creating databases (coding around SQL Server and setup a server when I have to) it isn’t my bread and butter.  Since I have run into a number of time that SQL Server needed to be tuned I figured I would step out of my comfort zone and see what I can learn. Brent Ozar packed a mountain of information into his session on making SQL Server faster.  I’m not sure how he found time to hit all of his points since he was allowing the audience abuse him on Twitter instead of asking questions, but he managed it.  I also questioned his sanity since he appeared to be using a fruit laptop. He had my attention though when he stated that he had given up on telling people to not use “select *”. He posited that it could be fixed with hardware by caching the data in memory.  He continued by cautioning that having too many indexes could defeat this approach.  His logic was sound if not always practical, but it was a good place to start when determining the trade-offs you need to balance.  He was moving pretty fast, but I believe he was prescribing this solution predominately for OLTP database prior to moving on to data warehouse solutions. Much of the advice he gave for data warehouses is contained in the Microsoft Fast Track guidance so I won’t rehash it here.  To summarize the solution seems to be the proper balance memory, disk access speed and the speed of the pipes that get the data from storage to the CPU.  It appears to be sound guidance and the session gave enough information that going forward we should be able to find the details needed easily.  Just what the doctor ordered. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server,TechEd,TechEd 2012,Database,Performance Tuning

  • User permissions linux. (proftpd / nginx)

    I've been having a complete nightmare trying to configure proftpd. I've got proftp server working with an sql database. However I want to have any files uploaded able to viewed by the webserver running on the same box. The folders get created in /var/tmp/ as rwx------ 2 ftpuser ftpgroup 4096 Oct 8 20:35 50730c4346512 drwx------ 2 ftpuser ftpgroup 4096 Oct 8 20:38 50730f3a811ca I've tried adding www-data to group with the following usermod -g www-data ftpuser But this doesn't allow the web server access. In proftpd.conf I have the following umask set Umask 0022 It doesn't seem to make a difference what I set that value to. /etc/group (sure I've messed up one of these two but I'm getting desperate) ftpgroup:x:2001:www-data www-data:x:33:ftpgroup /etc/passwd www-data:x:33:33:www-data:/var/www:/bin/sh proftpd:x:108:65534::/var/run/proftpd:/bin/false ftp:x:109:65534::/srv/ftp:/bin/false ftpuser:x:2001:33:proftpd user www-data:/bin/null:/bin/false The ftpuser table in the database has uid / gid set to 2oo1 for both. I'm going absolutely crazy trying to solve this any help would be greatly appreciated. p.s Also, although if I manually connect to the ftp server I can upload files via FileZilla. Although this isn't working for the web-camera, although there is talky talky going on between the server and the camera.

  • Enjoy How-To Geek User Style Script Goodness

    Most people may not be aware of it but there are two user style scripts that have been created just for use with the How-To Geek website. If you are curious then join us as we look at these two scripts at work. Note: User Style Scripts & User Scripts can be added to most browsers but we are using Firefox for our examples here. The How-to Geek Wide User Style Script The first of the two scripts affects the viewing width of the website’s news content. Here you can see everything set at the normal width. When you visit the UserStyles website you will be able to view basic information about the script and see the code itself if desired. On the right side of the page is the good part though. Since we are using Firefox with Greasemonkey installed we chose the the “install as a user script option”. Notice that the script is available for other browsers as well (very nice!) Within a few moments of clicking on the “install as a user script button” you will see the following window asking confirmation for installing the script. After installing the user style script and refreshing the page it has now stretched out to fill 90% of the browser window’s area. Definitely nice! The How-To Geek – News and Comments (600px) User Style Script The second script can be very useful for anyone with the limited screen real-estate of a netbook. You can see another of the articles from here at the site viewed in a  “normal mode”. Once again you can view basic information about this particular user style script and view the code if desired. As above we have the Firefox/Greasemonkey combination at work so we installed as a user script. This is one of the great things about using Greasemonkey…it always checks with you to make certain that no unauthorized scripts are added. Once the script was installed and we refreshed the page things looked very very different. All the focus has been placed on the article itself and any comments attached to the article. For those who may be curious this is what the homepage looks like using this script. Conclusion If you have been wanting to add a little bit of “viewing spice” to your browser for the How-To Geek website then definitely pop over to the User Styles website and give these two scripts a try.   • How to Share Files Between User Accounts on Windows, Linux, or OS X

    Your operating system provides each user account with its own folders when you set up several different user accounts on the same computer. Shared folders allow you to share files between user accounts. This process works similarly on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. These are all powerful multi-user operating systems with similar folder and file permission systems. Windows On Windows, the “Public” user’s folders are accessible to all users. You’ll find this folder under C:\Users\Public by default. Files you place in any of these folders will be accessible to other users, so it’s a good way to share music, videos, and other types of files between users on the same computer. Windows even adds these folders to each user’s libraries by default. For example, a user’s Music library contains the user’s music folder under C:\Users\NAME\as well as the public music folder under C:\Users\Public\. This makes it easy for each user to find the shared, public files. It also makes it easy to make a file public — just drag and drop a file from the user-specific folder to the public folder in the library. Libraries are hidden by default on Windows 8.1, so you’ll have to unhide them to do this. These Public folders can also be used to share folders publically on the local network. You’ll find the Public folder sharing option under Advanced sharing settings in the Network and Sharing Control Panel. You could also choose to make any folder shared between users, but this will require messing with folder permissions in Windows. To do this, right-click a folder anywhere in the file system and select Properties. Use the options on the Security tab to change the folder’s permissions and make it accessible to different user accounts. You’ll need administrator access to do this. Linux This is a bit more complicated on Linux, as typical Linux distributions don’t come with a special user folder all users have read-write access to. The Public folder on Ubuntu is for sharing files between computers on a network. You can use Linux’s permissions system to give other user accounts read or read-write access to specific folders. The process below is for Ubuntu 14.04, but it should be identical on any other Linux distribution using GNOME with the Nautilus file manager. It should be similar for other desktop environments, too. Locate the folder you want to make accessible to other users, right-click it, and select Properties. On the Permissions tab, give “Others” the “Create and delete files” permission. Click the Change Permissions for Enclosed Files button and give “Others” the “Read and write” and “Create and Delete Files” permissions. Other users on the same computer will then have read and write access to your folder. They’ll find it under /home/YOURNAME/folder under Computer. To speed things up, they can create a link or bookmark to the folder so they always have easy access to it. Mac OS X Mac OS X creates a special Shared folder that all user accounts have access to. This folder is intended for sharing files between different user accounts. It’s located at /Users/Shared. To access it, open the Finder and click Go > Computer. Navigate to Macintosh HD > Users > Shared. Files you place in this folder can be accessed by any user account on your Mac. These tricks are useful if you’re sharing a computer with other people and you all have your own user accounts — maybe your kids have their own limited accounts. You can share a music library, downloads folder, picture archive, videos, documents, or anything else you like without keeping duplicate copies.

  • Black screen when switching users on HP laptop (running vista)

    Vista machine: When I switch users I get a black screen for 30+ seconds. Doesn't seem to matter who is logged in. Delay happens when I click "switch user" but not when I lock the screen and log back in as same user. Specs: Windows Vista 64-bit; HP pavilion dv9710t laptop; 17" screen (best guess is that it has something to do with display settings, not sure)
