• Non-ECC memory with ZFS: a stupid idea?

  I'm the proud new owner of an HP Proliant Microserver N40L, and planning to upgrade the (obviously paltry 2 GB of) memory to the maximum of 16 GB. (Theoretically 8 GB is the limit, but empirically 16 GB has been shown to work.) Some guides advise that ECC memory is not that important, but I'm not so sure I believe this. I've installed FreeNAS and am planning to add ZFS volumes as soon as my new hard drives arrive. Would it be stupid to skimp and get non-ECC memory for a ZFS-based NAS? If it's necessary, then I'll bite the bullet, but if it's just paranoia, then I'll probably skip it.

• 2010 MBP HD speed sanity check?

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

• Is it possible to upgrade HTC HD2 to Windows Mobile 7? [closed]

  I have HD2 over one year and I have to say it was pretty wrong purchase. Both HTC HW and MS OS (Windows Mobile 6.5) are somehow crappy. I had several crashes wich resulted in hard reset (no flashing and almost no additionally installed applications) and phone was under repair two times (2x replaced motherboard and 1x replaced dislay). After these reapirs at least HW works pretty well but OS is still bad. I would like to upgrade the phone to Windows Mobile 7. I'm not looking for some flashing (I already saw some guides). I'm ready to pay for upgrade to have it legal. Is it possible? Buying new phone just to have SW upgrade is ridiculous. Btw. My primary phone is iPhone 4 and I think on iPhone 3GS it is possible to upgrade OS iOS 4 so I would like to see similar possibility with Windows Mobile.

  What is the correct way to set up sshwindows for SSH key authentication? Does the user need to be created in Windows first or can a login be inserted into passwd without a Windows equivalent? I've searched on Google and have tried the tutorials and quick start guides. So far, exactly 0 have worked. None pointed out that to work in Windows 2008 R2, you need to change the properties of cygrunsrv.exe to "Windows XP SP3" compability mode to even get past the service startup "error 1067". Although it is running, no amount of configuration allowed me to log on to the SFTP server, even though I tried (from another machine): same user account added using "mkpasswd" + windows password same user account added using "mkpasswd" + public ssh key (added to /home/theuser/.ssh) On Windows 2003 R2 (a different attempt), the service would crash every time it started up. • Change Apache DocumentDirectory path in trueCrypt partition

  Hello, I'm recently moving from windows to linux, so I've setup my machine to dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I was able to successfully setup Apache on the Ubuntu partition, but I need to move the DocumentRoot since my websites are on a TrueCrypt partition that is in another hard drive so I can have them accessible in both OS. I followed some guides on how to change the path for the DocumentRoot so I end up modifiying the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available DocumentRoot /media/truecrypt1/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /media/truecrypt1/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> Those are the lines that I've changed, but now when I go to localhost I always get the Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. • Clustering with Vsphere and Apache load balacing

  I was looking at Vsphere to automatically load balance my apache web servers, and mysql servers but will this actually do the job? I know it says it does auto load balancing but not actually sure it quite means what I want to achieve. Is there an easier way to set up a php-apache and mysql cluster within virtual machines? Or are there any guides to clustering? (I have tried googling without much luck) Any help towards understanding/setting up clustering and load balancing within virtual machines appreciated.

  Here is the situation. I can't get into Vista or boot into safe mode. I get blue screened either way during the loading process. I would like to try to disable as many dlls and programs from loading at boot as I can. What files in vista do I change to go about doing this? All the guides I've seen do it from within Vista. I have a BartPE bootable cd that I'm using to get into the file system. I just need to know which files to modify. Thanks much for reading

• Install XP over Ubuntu. (Flash Drive)

  My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

• Installing Solaris 10 on sunT5220 - ZFS/UFS raid 10?

  I am in a bit of a time crunch, and need to get two T5220's built. We were very happy to see two boxes in our aged inventory which had 8 HDD's each, but didn't think to check if they were running hardware RAID or not. Turns out that they aren't. When we install, we are given the option to use UFS or ZFS, but when we select a place to install we're only given the option of installing on one single disk. Is it possible to create a software raid 10 across all of the disks and install the OS on that? Sorry if any lingo is wrong, I'm not really a Sun guy and our guru is out of town right now. Any help would be really appreciated! Note: Most of the guides I've found on google entail installing the OS on a single disk, and then creating a separate RAID 10 on other disks. We would actually like the OS to reside on the RAID 10. Hope that clarifies things.

• How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

• How to mount a iSCSI/SAN storage drive to a stable device name (one that can't change on re-connect)?

  We need stable device paths for our Twinstrata SAN drives. Many guides for setting up iSCSI connectors simply say to use a device path like /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. This is far from correct, I doubt that any setup exists that would be happy to have its device name suddenly change (from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb for example). The fix I found was to install multipath and start a multipathd on boot which then provides a stable mapping between the storage's WWID to a device path like this /dev/mapper/firebird_database. This is a method described in the CentOS/RedHat here: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/DM_Multipath/setup_procedure.html. This seems a little complicated though. We noticed that it is common to see UUIDs appear in fstab on new installs. So, the question is, why do we need an external program (multipathd) running to provide a stable device mount? Should there be a way to provide the WWID directly in /etc/fstab?

At the end of evaluation, it turns this information into a report, which it sends to the server (if requested). And at the end of evaluation puppet agent would generate a report and sent the report to the master. Is there a way to get real-time status of evaluation phase and post them to a remote logcollector? Glad for any suggestions.

• Windows 8 Remote Desktop only allows one user at a time?

  I tried connecting to Windows 8 using its built-in Remote Desktop feature, but for some inexplicable reason, it requires that no users are logged in on the target machine before a remote user can log in. This has never been a problem with rdesktop on Unixen; I could rdesktop from as many machines as I wanted and any logged-in users would never notice a thing. What's the problem with Windows? Any way to allow concurrent local and remote logins to a Windows 8 machine without hacks or cracks? The "guides" on how to do this that show up in the Google results all suggest replacing a system DLL with a hacked one, but that's not acceptable.

• Proxy server modifying request/response upon pass through

  I would like to set up a non-transparent proxy server that will selectively modify HTTP requests and responses as it passes them through. The motivation for wanting to modify the data on the fly and not at the original source are not part of the question. I'm hoping there is a solution which allows the modification scripts to be written in a mainstream programming language. I am aware of guides for Squid which allow you to flip images etc on the way through but I was hoping for a slightly more established and less hackish solution. Does anyone know of an established open source project or environment (Any major platform) which would allow me to script in arbitrary modifications to the data being passed through?

  I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. So i'll be really greateful if someone who has successfully setup a webdav server for use with goodreader can point me on how to do it?

• RAID 1 in ubuntu 12.04

  Right now I have a small file server to which I have loaded ubuntu 12.04 desktop on a small 160gb harddrive. This harddrive is the primary drive from which the OS boots. I want to move all my data to my file server so it can be shared on the network (contain in 2x2TB harddrives in my desktop. The 2TB drivers are in raid 1 (hardware). I simply want to move them to the file server and set it up so that they are in software raid 1. If at all possible I'd like to be able to do this without losing any info on the drives. I've searched around and the guides i find describe raiding drives for boot driver, but these wouldn't be boot drives just regular storage drives. If someone could tell me how to perform this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Done Building dependency tree... Done E: Couldn't find package redis-server I'll assume that I need to add a repository or something to Ubuntu to help it find the package I want, but how do I do it?   There are many quotes from famous computer scientists that have become the wisdom that guides our profession. For example: "Premature optimization is the root of all evil in programming." Donald Knuth (citing Hoare's Dictum) "Everyone knows that debugging is twice as hard as writing a program in the first place. So if you're as clever as you can be when you write it, how will you ever debug it?" Brian Kernighan And so on. My question is, what are your favorite words of wisdom about programming from someone who is not famous? Was it a friend, a coworker, or a teacher, or a family member? For example, a technical writer friend of mine said: "You can't get the right answers unless you ask the right questions." Thanks for all the contributions! The answer I selected was (a) specifically coding-related, and (b) stated by someone who is not technically famous (though he has a popular blog and a podcast and runs StackOverflow). I.e. he's no Bill Gates or Yogi Berra.

  With the availability of Oracle UPK 3.6.1 and Enablement Service Pack 1 for Oracle UPK 3.6.1 (Oracle Support login required for both), there are quite a few changes for content admins to absorb. In addition to the support added for dozens of application releases, patches and new target applications, we've also added features to make implementing and using In-Application Support even easier. First, the old Help Menu Integration Guides have been updated and combined into a single In-Application Support Guide. If you integrate UPK content for user assistance, or if you're interested in doing so, read the new guide! It covers all the integration steps, including a section on the new In-Application Support Configuration Utility. If you've integrated content in multiple languages, or if you've ever had to make configuration changes for UPK Help Integration, then you know how cumbersome it was to manually edit javascript files. No longer! The Player now includes a configuration utility that provides a web browser interface for setting all In-Application Support options. From the main screen, you see a list of applications covered by the published content. Clicking on an application name takes you to the edit configuration screen where you can set all Player options for that application. No more digging through the Player folders to find the right javascript file to edit. No complicated javascript syntax to make changes. • [MINI HOW-TO] Create Keyboard Shortcuts to Applications in Windows

  Do you need just one or a few special keyboard shortcuts for your favorite program(s)? A quick modification to program shortcuts will get you up and running without installing additional software. Creating New Keyboard Shortcuts Go to the start menu shortcut for the program, right-click on it, and select properties. When the properties window opens click in the shortcut key text area. All that you need to do is choose an appropriate letter for the program (i.e. O for Opera, E for Editra, etc.) and type it in the blank. You will not need to type any other keys or combination in…the “Ctrl + Alt +” will be automatically entered for you as soon as you type the letter in. Click OK to finish creating the new keyboard shortcut. Those new keyboard shortcuts will speed up access to your favorite software. Another example from our system using “I” for Iron Browser. Certainly much quicker than using the start menu. Conclusion If you only need one or just a few special keyboard shortcuts then this method provides a quick and simple solution.
