  • My boss decided to add a "person to blame" field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?

    In one of the latest "WTF" moves, my boss decided that adding a "Person To Blame" field to our bug tracking template will increase accountability (although we already have a way of tying bugs to features/stories). My arguments that this will decrease morale, increase finger-pointing and would not account for missing/misunderstood features reported as bug have gone unheard. What are some other strong arguments against this practice that I can use? Is there any writing on this topic that I can share with the team and the boss? I find this sort of culture unacceptable to work in but want to try and change it before jumping ship. Any input is appreciated.

  • Google Analytics - bad experiences? (esp. adult content)

    I work for a rather large adult website, and we're currently not using Google Analytics. There is an internal debate going on about whether we should start using Analytics, but there is hestitation from certain parties. The main argument is that they fear that Google will get too much insight into our website, and might even block us from the index as a result based on our adult content. Has anyone here ever had such an experience, or know stories about bad experiences with Google Analytics in such a manner? I personally think it will only improve our website if we were able to use Analytics, but the dev team was asked to look into possible negative effects. Any help would be appreciated.

    Definitions MIS = management information system Some list about console based solutions here and some GUI-hacks here. Been fed up to install all those dependencies and no make -files with GUI -things so which console-based MIS would you suggest for a game-development team with graphical -repo, animation -repo, code -repo, stories -repo, etc ? P.s. I do use Git -submodules and the reason for repo -fragmentation is due to roles and size, certain repos such as graphic -repos tend to be quite large so better to keep them separate. I figured that it would be better to choose at the beginning what would be your target platform, as it would affect your design decisions, and limit the language you are supposed to use. However, I have heard several stories of people developing their game with whatever language they were the most confident with, and then porting it to the various platforms.   • Rewriting software using Agile methodologies

    Suppose you have to rewrite an entire application using Agile methodologies, how would you do it? I guess you could write a big bunch of user stories based in the behavior of your current system. And then implement them in small iterations. But this wouldn't mean that we have the requirements UP FRONT?? Also, when would you start releasing? Agile says we should release early and often, but it doesn't make much sense to release before the complete rewrite has been completed. Anybody has used Agile before to rewrite software? How did you do it?

The problem is that all the team members including me are junior developers and for all of us this is the first time we are working in a team. The problem is that we do not know how to start the project. We know a little about scrum and agile development, we have our user stories in place and our created project - which does not have even one piece of code - and now we are stuck and don't know how and what to do? All scrum books talk about scrum development but lack of the details like how to start. How my team will know what object I am using? How we will push the first piece of code and what it will be?   • How to avoid problems when installing Ubuntu and Windows 7 in dual-boot?

    I want to try out Ubuntu (and hopefully choose it as my primary OS). After looking at many versions of it in VirtualBox and from Live CD, I've finally decided to install it. So I defragmented and shrinked one of the partitions to make room for Ubuntu. My current setup (after shrinking the D: partition): [·100 MB·] [······250000 MB······] [·······600000 MB·······] [··100000 MB···] Reserved Windows 7 system (C:) Data (D:) Free space NTFS NTFS NTFS (for Ubuntu) The Internet (including AskUbuntu) is full of scary stories about Windows not loading after installation of Ubuntu, something about installing GRUB to a wrong partition, etc. As I am a newbie to Linux and Ubuntu, it is very easy for me to do something wrong. Please mention the problems that may appear and explain how to avoid them. Ubuntu version that will be installed: 10.10 Desktop amd64 Please note that I have installed Windows 7 about a year ago, so I have much to lose if something goes wrong. I want to be very careful because there is no way for me to backup all the data.

  • Prototype/scriptaculous browser compatibility

    Hi, I developed a page using the latest prototype and scriptaculous versions and after cleaning it up thoroughly, the only browser where my scripts work is ... chrome! Some things don't work at all with ie7(eg BlindUp), and some validations fail with ie8 and firefox 3.5. Any success stories to contradict this ? (Any tips will be appreciated).

    I'm using counterCache to track the number of chapters that have been posted to their related stories. This all works fine, apart from the fact that when the chapter_count field in the database gets updated, the modified field for that record does not. Is there any way that I can set Cake to automatically update the modified field when the counterCache functionality runs? Thank you.

  • How can I duplicate the UI functionality of Google Fastflip?

    Trying to get the same functionality as Google FastFlip. Not just with the thumbnails, but even for the larger images too. Notice how when you click on a story, you see the main story front and center, and you see smaller half-screens of previous and next stories. How can I get that functionality? Is there a plugin for one of the JS frameworks that does this already? I also love the speed and feel of flipping through the images.

    Hello, We are soon to get VS2010 and according to the link below, Microsoft do not support VS2010 on XP x64. http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/professional/system-requirements Does anyone have XP 64bit running VS2010? I am not interested in 64bit version of VS (I am wanting to install a 32bit version of VS2010 professional on a 64 bit XP machine). I am aware that XP will require SP3. Any warnings? Horror stories? Advice?

  • ubercart search - products aren't indexed

    Our shopping website is based on drupal's ubercart. I have setup ApacheSolr and ApacheSolr Ubercart integration modules. I have created a few products on my website, but am unable to get these products indexed. The default ApacheSolr module works, i.e., I am able to index drupal's default stories. But am unable to achieve indexing for ubercart. Guidance is greatly appreciated. Even links to tutorials to set these up would be helpful.
