• Un balance del XXI Congreso de la Comunidad de Usuarios de Oracle

  La XXI edición del Congreso de CUORE (Comunidad de Usuarios de Oracle) se clausuró el miércoles pasado tras dos intensos días de conferencias, talleres, reuniones y mesas redondas. Los más de 600 asistentes son una buena muestra del gran interés que despiertan las propuestas tecnológicas de Oracle entre nuestros clientes. Big Data y el sector utilities fueron dos de los grandes protagonistas del Congreso. El evento fue inaugurado por Félix del Barrio (en la segunda foto por la izquierda), director general de Oracle en España. Una buena parte del evento, la mañana del martes, estuvo dedicada a Big Data. Con Andrew Sutherland, Vicepresidente Senior de Tecnología de Oracle en EMEA, haciendo la presentación principal, para dar paso después a sesiones específicas sobre las tecnologías necesarias en las diferentes fases de los proyectos Big Data (obtener los datos, organizarlos, analizarlos y, finalmente, tomar las decisiones de negocio correspondientes). No nos vamos a entretener explicando qué es Big Data, un tema que ya hemos tratado previamente en este blog (aquí y aquí), pero sí hay que llamar la atención sobre un tema que Andrew Sutherland puso sobre la mesa en una reunión con periodistas: los proyectos relacionados con los Big Data tienen sentido pleno si nos sirven para modificar procesos y modelos de negocio, de forma que incrementemos la eficacia de la organización. Si nuestra organización está basada en procesos rígidos e inmutables (lo que tiene que ver esencialmente con el tipo de aplicaciones que estén implementadas), el aprovechamiento de los Big Data será limitado. • Exceptional DBA 2011 Jeff Moden on why you should enter in 2012

  My "reign" as the Red Gate Exceptional DBA is almost over and I was asked to say a few words about this wonderful award. Having been one of those folks that shied away from entering the contest during the first 3 years of the award, I thought I'd spend the time encouraging DBAs of all types to enter. Winning this award has some obvious benefits. You win a trip to PASS including money towards your flight, paid hotel stay, and, of course, paid admission. You win a wonderful bundle of software from Red Gate to make your job as a DBA a whole lot easier. You also win some pretty incredible notoriety for your resume. After all, it's not everyone who wins a worldwide contest. To date, there are only 4 of us in the world who have won this award. You could be number 5! For me, all of that pales in comparison to what I found out during the entry process. I'm very confident in my skills, but I'm also humble. It was suggested to me that I enter the contest when it first started. I just couldn't bring myself to nominate myself. When the 2011 nomination period opened up, several people again suggested that I enter, so I swallowed hard and asked several co-workers to have a look at the online nomination form and, if they thought me worthy, to write a nomination for me. I won't bore you with the details, but what they wrote about me was one of the most incredible rewards that I could ever have hoped to receive. I had no idea of the impact that I'd made on my co-workers. Even if I hadn't made it to the top 5 for the award, I had already won something very near and dear that no one can ever top. "Even if I hadn't made it to the top 5 for the award, I had already won something very near and dear that no one can ever top." There's only one named winner and 4 "runners up" in this competition every year but don't let that discourage you. Enter this competition. Even if you work in the proverbial "Mom'n'Pop" shop, get your boss and the people you work with directly to nominate you. Even if you don't make it to the top 5, you might just find out that you're more of a winner than you think. If you're too proud to ask them, then take the time to nominate yourself instead of shying away like I did for the first 3 years. You work hard as a DBA and, as David Poole once said, if you're the first person that people ask for help rather than one of the last, then you're probably an Exceptional DBA. It's time to stand up and be counted! Win or lose, the entry process can be a huge reward in itself. It was for me. Thank you, Red Gate, for giving me such a wonderful opportunity. • Creando un File Upload

  Para iniciar hablaremos un poco sobre el control File Upload, de esta forma daremos una idea general de que es y como trabaja. El File Upload es un control de asp.net que permite que los usuarios seleccionen un archivo de cualquier ubicación en el equipo y lo suban a un directorio predeterminado a traves de una página asp.net. En principio este control esta limitado para no permitir subir archivos de mas de 4 MB. Sin embargo, desde el webconfig de nuestra aplicacón podremos cambiar ese valor, ya sea para aumentarlo o bien para disminuirlo. Nuestro ejemplo, se enfocará en crear un webcontrol que permita seleccionar un archivo y guardarlo, asi que empecemos. • Java, two JPanel on JFrame - Settings JPanel, StartMenu JPanel [on hold]

  There is my first question and I welcome community! I'm making a simple game and have some problems with Start menu. I have three buttons on my JPanel StartMenu and when I click "Settings" button, new JPanel will be open, but I don't know why buttons from StartMenu JPanel appeared in my Settings JPanel. My "Settings" JPanel has one ugly button "Back" in center and ugly grey background. I made some screens to see a problem. • Why googling by keycaptcha gives results on reCAPTCHA? [closed]

  EDIT: I'd like to change this title to: How to STOP Google's manipulation of Google search engine presented to general public? I am frequently googling and more and more frequently bump when searching by one software product I am given instead the results on Google's own products. For ex., if I google by keyword keycaptcha for the "Past 24 hours" (after clicking on "Show search tools" -- "Past 24 hours" on the left sidebar of a browser) I am getting the Google's search results show only results on reCAPTCHA. Image uploaded later: Though, if confine keycaptcha in quotes the results are "correct" (well, kind of since they are still distorted in comparison with other search engines). I checked this during few months from different domains at different ISPs, different operating systems and from a dozen of browsers. The results are the same. Why is it and how can it be possibly corrected? My related posts: "How Gmail spam filter works?" IP adresses blacklisting Update: It is impossible for me to directly start using google.com as I am always redirected to google.ru (from google.com) by my ip-address "auto-detect location" google's "convenience". The google's help tells that it is impossible to switch off my location auto-detection because it is very helpful feature. There is a work-around to use google.com/ncr (to get google.com) (?anybody know what does it mean) to prevent redirection from google.com but even. But all results are exactly the same OK, I can search by quoted "keycaptcha", I am already accustomed to these google's quirks, but the question arises why the heck to burn time promoting someone's product if GOOGLE uses other product brands for showing its own interests/brands (reCAPTCHA) instead and what can be done with it? The general user will not understand that he was cheated and just will pick up the first (wrong) results Update2: Note that this googling behaviour: is independent on whether I am logged-in (or log-out-ed of) a google account, which account, on browser (I tried Opera, Chrome, FireFox, IE of different versions, Safari), OS or even domain; there are many such cases but I just targeted one concrete restricted example speciffically to to prevent wandering between unrelated details and peculiarities; @Michael, first it is not true and this text contains 2 links for real and significant results.. I also wrote that this is just one concrete example from many and based on many-month exp. These distortions happen upon clicking on: Past 24 hours, Past week, Past month, Past year in many other keywords, occasions/configurations of searches, etc. Second, the absence of the results is the result and there is no point to sneakingly substitute it by another unsolicited one. It is the definition of spam and scam. 3d, the question is not abt workarounds like how to write search queries or use another searching engines. The question is how to straighten the googling's results in order to stop disorienting general public about. • codeigniter and OOP general question regarding calling functions, and the parent constuctor

  Ok so I have some gaps in my understanding of PHP OOP, classes and functions specifically, this whole constructor class deal. I use both Zend and CI but right now Im trying to figure this out in CI as it is less complicated. So all Im trying to do is understand how to call a function from a view page in code igniter. I understand that might go against MVC but Im working with an api and search results not from my database, so basically, I want to define a function in my class that I am able to call in one of my view pages.. and I keep getting "Fatal error: Call to undefined function functionname" error no matter what I try. I thought I just had to declare public function testing() { echo "testing testing 123; } but calling that from the view I get that error. Then I read something about having to go parent::Controller(); in the index of the class where the testing function also resides? But that didnt work either. Anyways, ya, can someone explain what I need to do in order to call the "testing()" function on one of my view pages? and clarification on the constructor class and what exactly parent::Controller() even does, would be much appreciated as well.

• Treebeard admin in Django

  I've setup Treebeard in Django and everything seems to have gone well. I tried to setup the admin system and I can see my models being presented in the admin interface. However, when I try to add new data using the admin interface, I get the following error in my template. The code still works fine, and I did a check in my DB and the data seems to be inserted properly. However, the view doesn't seem to load properly. Any idea about what is causing this?? Then open another file and do a find an replace. I know this should be easy but haven't done so much in python before.   Hi, Im trying to learn the code igniter library and object oriented php in general and have a question. Ok so Ive gotten as far as making a page which loads all of the rows from my database and in there, Im echoing an anchor tag which is a link to the following structure. [code]echo anchor("videos/video/$row-video_id", $row-video_title);[/code] So, I have a class called Videos which extends the controller, within that class there is index and video, which is being called correctly (when you click on the video title, it sends you to videos/video/5 for example, 5 being the primary key of the table im working with. So basically all Im trying to do is pass that 5 back to the controller, and then have the particular video page output the particular rows data from the videos table. My function in my controller for video looks like this - [code] function video() { $data['main_content'] = 'video'; $data['video_title'] = 'test'; $this-load-view('includes/template', $data); } [/code] So ya, basically test should be instead of test, a returned value of a query which says get in the table "videos", the row with the video_id of "5", and make $data['video_title'] = value of video_title in database... Should have this figured out by now but dont, any help would be appreciated!

  Django's internationalization is very nice (gettext based, LocaleMiddleware), but what is the proper way to translate the model name and the attributes for admin pages? Grepping in the Django source code I found: $ ack "Select %s to change" contrib/admin/views/main.py 70: self.title = (self.is_popup and ugettext('Select %s') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name) or ugettext('Select %s to change') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name)) So the verbose_name meta property seems to play some role here. Tried to use it: class Order(models.Model): subject = models.CharField(max_length=150) description = models.TextField() class Meta: verbose_name = _('order') Now the updated po file contains msgid 'order' that can be translated. So I put the translation in. Unfortunately running the admin pages show the same mix of "???????? order ??? ?????????". I'm currently using Django 1.1.1. Could somebody point me to the relevant documentation? Because google can not. ;-) In the mean time I'll dig deeper into the django source code...

• Sinatra application running on Dreamhost suddenly not working

  My Sinatra application was running fine on Dreamhost until a few days ago (I'm not sure precisely when it went bad). Now when I visit my app I get this error: can't activate rack (~> 1.1, runtime) for ["sinatra-1.1.2"], already activated rack-1.2.1 for [] I have no idea how to fix this. I've tried updating all my gems, then touching the app/tmp/restart.txt file, but still no fix. I hadn't touched any files of my app, nor my Dreamhost account. It just busted on its own (my guess is DH changed something on their server which caused the bust). When I originally deployed my app, I had to go through some hoops to get it working, and I seem to think I was using gems in a custom location, but I can't remember exactly where or how. I don't know my way around Rack/Passenger very well. • generating images with php based on css3 gradient settings?

  Hi, Does anyone know if there is a php library, or if there isnt, have any input on how one would go about generating an image via php, from basic HTML element input settings, and CSS 3 gradient parameters. To give an example on why this would be useful, I have found as of a couple days ago, that laying out the wireframe for a webpage using basic Css3 gradient styling speeds up my design and development time by, well, alot. I cant design from photoshop, Ill spend hours tweaking stupid little things that only lead to me tweaking more stupid little things to compensate for stupid little changes. -- So, I had an epiphany to stop using photoshop until the end, and just focus on the main styling of elements, text-shadow, and borders for highlights, and I feel I am able to make super clean, more focused layout by being more restricted to the basics of graphic design with just css. Anyways, so Im planning on after I have the layouts done, to then recreate the graphics in photoshop, so that every browser is able to render the images. This wont take long, but as far as repeating it goes, if I could just do it with PHP, that would be incredible. For instance, take this style for example, which renders a clean looking ipad/pod ish menu/button gradient. Take a width and a height input, and then render the image gradient accordingly, so I can save it, upload it and then use it in my designs. So ya, I know PHP has some image generation capabilities but I dont know to what extent, any input on the most effective way to go about doing this or whether it already exists, would be appreciated!
