  I have a java app on a large instance that will spawn up to 800 threads. I can run the application fine as user "root" but not as another user which I created. I get the deadly. java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread at java.lang.Thread.start0(Native Method) at java.lang.Thread.start(Thread.java:657) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.addWorker(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:943) at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.execute(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:1325) nightmare. I have tried increasing the stack size already in limits.conf to no avail. Please, help me out. What is different here for the root and other user?

• DELETE method not working in Apache 2.4

  I'm running Apache 2.4 locally and dealing with RESTful services authenticating through OAuth. GET, PUT and POST work fine but I can't get DELETE to work. I've tried installing WebDAV and mod_dav, overriding methods in .htaccess, tried Limits, force (enable) DELETE options in configuration and pretty much everything I've found in Google and StackExchange. • Intel Core i7-4960HQ vs. 4850HQ (Haswell) [on hold]

  I'm looking at the new MacBook Pros and trying to decide between the Core i7-4960HQ (2.6 GHz) and i7-4850 (2.3 GHz). I've found some synthetic benchmarks comparing them, but I haven't found a lot of data, so I'd appreciate any pointers to good comparisons for the Haswell family (especially these two processors). My cursory analysis seems to suggest there isn't a huge gain from the extra 300 MHz. I'd like to determine not only whether this is generally true, but also to figure out if the gains that are made in performance come at too high of cost. Is the 2.6 going to be pushing the limits of what can fit in a thin laptop without overheating? I've looked at some of Intel's documentation, but have not been able to determine what the normal and maximum operating temperature differences are for the models. In the past, there have been times that Intel's fastest models in a given range ran especially hot and/or consumed significantly more power compared to slightly slower models. Do those concerns factor into the current generation?

  Possible Duplicate: Windows XP and RAM 3.5GB+ Installed RAM : 4 GB but 2.96GB Usable......why? I have a Macbook Pro with 4GB of installed RAM. I have installed Windows 7 on it which shows the usable memory as 2.74GB. Why is this? Don't tell me the 32 bit story; I program for a living. • How reliable are Compact Flash drives

  For example, USB drives have read/write limits. and they are considered as unreliable and not durable for daily use over many years. My question is, however, about Compact Flash drives. AFAIK they are built almost in the same way as USB flash drives. I was going to use one Compact Flash drive for daily usage and install a lightweight operating system to it (Linux). What kind of limitations do they have? Read/write operations? Just a time? something else? Thank you!

• Increasing file descriptor limit on Debian does not work! Help!

  I am running Debian 6 and I am trying to increase the file descriptor limit but it does not want to work. This is what I have done: I edited /etc/sysctl.conf by adding fs.file-max = 64000 at the end and applied the changes using sysctl -p. I then edited /etc/security/limits.conf and added the following lines: * soft nofile 64000 and * hard nofile 64000. Now when I execute ulimit -Hn and ulimit -Sn I still see 1024. I rebooted the server and I still get the same result. What have I failed to do?

  Is there any way how to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer running MAC OS X or Windows 8? I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. The reason is that every SkyDrive has it's storage limits and I'm using every account for different work data.   Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

• Perl script and out of memory errors

  We have a midsized server with 48GB of RAM and are attempting to import a list of around 100,000 opt-in email subscribers to a new list management system written in Perl. From my understanding, Perl doesn't have imposed memory limits like PHP, and yet we are continuously getting internal server errors when attempting to do the import. When investigating the error logs, we see that the script ran out of memory. Since perl doesn't have a setting to limit the memory usage (as far as I can tell) why are we getting these errors? I doubt a small import like this is consuming 48GB of ram. We have compromised and split the list into chunks of 10,000, but would like to figure out the root cause for future fixes. This is a CentOS machine with Litespeed as the web server.

  We are about to deploy a bunch of sites to some new servers. I have the following questions about application pools: 1) It seems advisable to have an application pool per website. Are there any caveats to this approach? Can one application pool, for example, hog all the CPU, Memory, Etc...? 2) When should you allow multiple worker processes in an application pool. When should you not? 3) Can private memory limit be used to prevent one application pool from interfering with another? Will setting it too low cause valid requests to recycle the application pool without getting a valid response? 4) What is the difference between private and virtual memory limits? 5) Are there compelling reasons NOT to run one application pool per site?   Hi, I've been battling with this issue for couple of months. I need to send bulk mail (not spam) through my social network to users in situations like newsletters, site invitations (when user imports their address book contacts) I'm using shared hosting and it limits 500 mails per hour. Even though i manage to send mails most of them end up in user's spam box. After researching these are the solutions that i finally came up with. 1) Use Google Apps SMTP (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/features.html) 2) Move into VPS 3) Use shared hosting with throttle enabled Please advise me on what to choose. Will using Google Apps prevent mail being sent as spam? I can't use other 3rd party SMTP like iContact or Aweber as "invitation sending script" will send emails to thousands of contacts, depending on user's addressbook. Thanks in advance

• Is there a maximum of open files per process in Linux?

  My question is pretty simple and is actually stated in the title. One of my applications throws errors regarding "too many open files" at me, even tho the limit for the user the application runs with is higher than the default of 1024 (lsof -u $USER reports 3000 open fds). Because I cannot imagine why this happens, I guess there might be a maximum per process. Any idea is very appreciated! • Limited RGB range due to HDMI cable?

  I have a NVidia GeForce GTX 660, connected to a Samsung SyncMaster S24B350 through a HDMI cable. On my computer, I'm running both, Windows 8 and Linux Mint. I think that something might prevent my system from using the whole RGB spectrum, since bright colors seem to vanish into white under standard settings. However, under Linux I could switch to a limited color range mode (16-235) and suddenly, the image looked much better. Is it possible that the HDMI cable limits color range (since it was originally inteded for TVs)? Is there a way of switching to limited color range mode in Windows 8 as well?

• MySQL open files limit

  This question is similar to set open_files_limit, but there was no good answer. I need to increase my table_open_cache, but first I need to increase the open_files_limit. I set the option in /etc/mysql/my.cnf: open-files-limit = 8192 This worked fine in my previous install (Ubuntu 8.04), but now in Ubuntu 10.04, when I start the server up, open_files_limit is reported to be 1710. That seems like a pretty random number for the limit to be clipped to. Anyway, I tried getting around it by adding a line like this in /etc/security/limits.conf: mysql hard nofile 8192 I also tried adding this to the pre-start script in mysql's upstart config (/etc/init/mysql.conf): ulimit -n 8192 Obviously neither of those things worked. So where is the hoop that has been added between Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04 through which I must jump in order to actually increase the open files limit?

• Remote Desktop Client in Windows 7 Full Screen Issue

  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a new laptop and I'm having one of the most annoying issues with the RDP client (mstsc.exe). If I restore the full screen RDP window, I lose the ability to go back to full screen. The only way I can get it back is by running a new instance of mstsc, setting the option back to full screen, and connecting again. I don't have this problem on any other machine (granted, this is the only copy of Home Premium I have). Is this a known issue? Is there a patch/fix? It's pretty obnoxious, I'm having to train myself to not use the restore button and only minimize it (which limits uses).

• Nginx Static Content Server Maxing Out?

  I use nginx to serve the static content for a decently busy website of mine. I have the logging disabled, and 4 worker processes enabled with 5,000 connections per worker (which should yield a max connection limit of 20,000. The server is only operating at about 10% CPU usage and 50% ram, but it's very laggy, and sometimes nginx is so slow to respond to the requests, it times out. For a small number of connections, it's fine, but once any load starts occurring (~2,500 connections), it backs up and bogs down. Is there any other bottlenecks or limits that I might be hitting? This is a FreeBSD server, and all the static files are located locally (not NFS). The NIC is an unmetered gigabit, and it's only using around 75 megabit. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Postfix count relayed messages per user

  I would like to know if it's possible to count the outgoing (relayed) messages on a per user basis in postfix. I'm managing a small commercial SMTP relay and decided that it would be nice to have a detailed daily report on how much mail a single user have sent (and eventually enforce some limits) possibly in realtime. I've looked almost everywhere and started to think that writing my own milter would be the way to go... Are you aware of anything that already exists for postfix that can count and report relayed mail for authenticated users (a script, milter or whatever)?

• MySQL keeps crashing OS server.. Please help adjust my.ini!

  I have MySQL 5.0 installed on a Windows 2008 machine (3GB RAM). My server crashes on a regular basis (almost once a day) with this error: Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619 I did not use the heavy InnoDB .ini file, although I am rethinking that I should have? I am worried that big configuration changes will make my current sites stop working. What should I do? • Munin fills server memory

  In the last weeks, it happened several times to me that my vserver (Debian Lenny) was out of RAM (500M) and therefore wasn't able to run apache anymore. When looking at the processes with top, I saw that there were many open munin-limits and munin-cron processes that consumed most of the memory. My guess would be that sometimes Apache temporarily needs more memory, which prevents munin-cron from running. And if munin-cron isn't able to stop itself, it would fill the memory until nothing is left. I don't know whether this guess is true, but could maybe someone know what the problem is and how to prevent it? If necessary I'll remove munin, but I'd prefer to keep it running.

  Hi, Not coming from the windows world, I'm confused about licensing. I think my knowledge may be out of date. Before we gave up with windows web servers (IIS 2), we used to have to pay Client Access licence's. This worked out quite expensive. Is it cheaper to host 1000's of users on Windows than use Free open source software tools? http://serverfault.com/questions/124329/network-load-balancing-efficience-and-limits. This post suggests I can pay $15 a month, for unlimited users. I certainly hope that this is unbiased view, I am a professional and use the right technology for the right job. I hope i am not feeling the wrath of a windows (or linux for that matter) fanboy. Perhaps a Microsoft certified Licensing person can clear this up. Should i be recommending to startups windows servers and products over lamp? Cheers!

Reasons NOT to limit log file sizes Research into performance issues or security breaches Any other? Methods of doing so Cron job that periodically deletes the file, or the first N lines? Any other? Anything you might salvage before deleting For example, grep out how many times a file was downloaded before deleting the access logs I'd like get the thoughts of experienced sysadmins before I do anything. • Reduce munin logging level

  Munin is quite verbose, and logs a bunch of things into munin-graph.log, munin-html.log, munin-limits.log and munin-update.log at each run of munin-cron. I already reduced munin-node logging level by setting log_level 0 in munin-node.conf, and that works well. munin-node.log only gets updated when an error message is generated. However I also tried to add the same option in munin.conf, but it makes munin crash. How one can reduce the amount of logs written by munin?
