  • Using physical disk with VMware Workstation

    I am using VMware Workstation 9.0 under Windows 7 and trying to load my Linux from Physicaldisk0. And it boots, grub sees the two partitions on the disk (I checked in command line) and the kernel and the initrd loads and then it stops saying "device not found"and drops me into an emergency shell. Indeed there is absolutely nothing in /dev not the /sda device it expects not /hda nothing that looks like a disk. Edit: I can boot the Linux disk just fine if I boot it from BIOS and not as a VM. Edit2: The question is, how can I make this setup work?

  • Restoring Box Sync (box.com) using physical media after OS reinstall

    I have my Box Folder on a different drive ( D: ) than my Operating System Drive ( C: ) I follow these instructions to set the local folder on the second drive. https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/200852947-How-Can-I-Change-the-Default-Folder-Location-for-Box-Sync- I had to format and reinstall Windows 7, leaving the other drive (D: ) untouched. now i reinstalled Box Sync, and directed it to the same location where i already have all my files. However, Box Sync renamed the folder to (Box ([email protected]) ) as a bckup, and is downloading everything again. As i have like 30Gb of files, and it takes many hour to download them, i just want to use the files that i already have in my local disk. i tried copying all files again to the new local Box Folder, but files started to get duplicated. Is there any way to avoid downloading everything again each time i reinstall my OS ? Thanks

    We had a disk fail and replace but forgot to vgreduce first.   • Accessing shared resource on local computer from users of different physical location

    Sounds like easy task to some but such a difficult task for me to do... The main requirement for this task is to setup something in offices located on different locations, so (1st question) users are able to log on to the domain without VPN when they are in one of the offices. Additionally, (2nd question)how they can log on to the domain server when they are on the road like in a starbuck, what do they have to do to connect to domain after VPN connection are successful. also it's my understanding that, we can't share resource from computers on different network segments, (3rd question)what is the best solution to bridge/combine two network segments(two office in different locations) so computers of different location can see each other.     Is it possible, and if so, what would it take to do a hard drive disc swap? If a HD has a damaged PCB board, but the actual disc inside the drive where all the information is stored is not damaged, is it possible to take that disc and put it in another hard drive whose PCB board is not damaged? (as long as both are the same type, SATA to SATA, etc.) Can this be done at home? Any special requirements?

  • Hyper-V with multiple physical networks

    I have Hyper-V on my laptop with a wireless and Ethernet card, sometimes I connect using wireless card, and sometimes using the Ethernet cable. I am trying to configure Hyper-v to work always with internet provided to virtual machine. I have tried to create 2 virtual switches, one external to the Wireless network card, and the other one external to the Ethernet card. What happens is that the wireless network creates a bridge object in the network and sharing center\Network connections of windows 8, while the Ethernet does not. Unfortunately, they do not work together as external, i have to set the connected one to external and the other one as external, I also have to go to the properties of the bridge and virtual Ethernet properties to uncheck and check some components like: Client for Microsoft Networks Deterministic Network Enhancer VMWare Bridge Protocol QoS Packet Scheduler File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks In order to make things work. Sometimes I keep the wireless network switch external, and go to another location (another wireless network), and it disconnects, i have to reconfigure the switches. Is there a way to do the configuration once and remain working wherever I connect, whether its Wireless or Ethernet and on any network with DHCP?

  • Xen P2V for large physical hosts with much free space

    I need to P2V a rhel5 machine to xen under rhel5. I know I can use dd if=/dev/sda then using virt-install --import on the host, but the downside of this is the original machine has 80% free space on its drive. Does anyone know of (or can document) a quick and easy method which works reliably, to produce a bootable xen image which can run under a hvm in such cases ? I tried clonezilla to make the image, to avoid the free space problem, but it failed to do the clone with "something went wrong" (useless info, i know). At the moment im looking at doing a dd of each partition, and a file level copy of the partition which is mostly empty, then creating a new virtual disk, copying the partitions over to it by mounting both the new image and the virtual drive on a second vm, then copying the boot sectors over, then copying the file level backup..... there must be an easier way ? Oh, and budget is $0. :)

  • Determining physical location of data on a disc

    Does anybody know of a way to find out where, physically on a CD or DVD a given piece of data would be located? I am trying to watch a DVD at the moment, and am about half-way through, but it keeps dying at a specific spot in the film, presumably because of a scratch. I have a repair kit, but I don’t know where to focus my repair because there are several scuffs and scratches on the disc and I have no way of knowing which one is causing the issue. Obviously, cleaning all of them is inadvisable because not only does it waste the consumable materials in the kit, but not all of them are a problem, and by working them, some may become unreadable. Moreover, just because I am half-way through the movie does not mean that it would be half-way from the hub to the edge for several reasons: Discs have more data towards the outer edge than the inner edge (circles are more mathematically complicated than rectangles) The disc is not completely filled up (and even if it were, the movie itself would be be using it all, there are extras and such) Because in this particular case it is a commercial DVD, it is also dual-layer which further complicates manual determination As such, I am trying to find a program that can let me identify a file (or part thereof), cluster, etc. and show me a picture of where on the CD/DVD it would be located. That way, I can look at the disc and fix any scratches that correspond to that distance from the hub. For example, the image below might indicate where on a disc a couple of files or range of clusters would be located, so by looking for anomalies in those areas (rotating as necessary), the correct one can be identified. I’m sure it can be done since at least one form of copy protection (DPM) uses it and DVD-lab Pro includes a “DVD Topology” feature to do this.

My current setup is the following Windows 7 Ultimate 1TB Boot Drive (my smallest drive) Windows Dynamic Spanned volume, continaing 1x 1TB drive, 2x 2TB drives, totalling 5TB. I am upgrading to a hardware RAID controller, and I would like to run Hyper-V server core. However, I want to retain the ability to join my "file server" to a homegroup, so I must use Windows 7. I know VHDs can only be like 127GB or something, so I obviously need to directly connect disks to my Windows 7 machine. Here is my plan: Server Core 2008 R2 (Hyper-V) 1TB Boot Drive (storing VHDs for boot drives of VMs) - possibly in a RAID 1 with my other 1TB drive 5x 2TB drives (1x 2TB drive hot spare), totalling 10TB, directly attached to a Windows 7 VM, for use of homegroup for this array.   • Japanese keyboard layout in Windows 7 doesn't correspond to what's written on the physical keyboard

    I have an English version of Windows 7, but my keyboard is Japanese. However, even though I choose a Japanese keyboard (Microsoft IME) under Keyboard and Languages, the layout isn't right. I think it's English layout, but I can't be sure. Anyway, I want the layout and usage to be exactly like it is on a Japanese Windows 7, as there are some nice (mouse free) shortcuts to change between input modes. Any suggestions?

By virtualized, I mean that if you boot this one, any changes made in it will not be committed to the disk. Just like how deepfreeze, returnil, and shadow user works. Is it possible to do that?   • Setting up VMWare ESXi 5 with a single physical NIC

    I have a cheap but powerful dedicated server I am leasing with OVH, because they were recently having a promotion. I would like to try and manage all this power by playing with VMs using ESXi. However I am only provided with a single NIC. I had thought this would be easy to get around since, at home I have a single NIC which is my broadband modem, and yet a simple NAT gateway device happily provides internet access to all my devices. I am struggling to implement this on ESXi, though. Can anyone advise on how I could go about having ESXi and multiple VMs working with just one NIC? Here's my current setup: I believe all I need is to be able to configure NAT from the NIC to all the VMs etc.. How would I set up and administer this kind of infrastructure?

This is the situation: We have 15 computers in our office. We have 3 printers, some wifi and some network plugged. We have a standard router and the office share things via dropbox. The computers are not on Windows SBS or something similar. We want a cloud hosting solution that will offer User can login on any machine in the office and see the machine software User can login on any machine in the office and open Outlook and their emails and signature will be on exchange automatically A shared company folder on the network All printers automatically installed on the network Users can login remotely to access emails via the web At the moment we have a network company saying we need Xeon server in house with backup and psu and Windows SBS with license for each machine and also we need cabinets and cabling setup and also load balancers and modification of our DNS for emails. My question is this. Can cloud offer this? Can we have a server in the cloud that does this? Is it possible I mean the computers would be wireless connected to this cloud and you turn the machine on and its hosted?

    I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

  • Running Windows 7 physical disk virtualized under Linux

    I have an existing Windows 7 installation that I'd like to virtualize under Linux. Windows boots fine on Disk A, Linux boots fine on Disk B. (Both disks are SATA.) I can mount the Windows disk when in Linux. I've tried VirtualBox and VMWare Player and neither will allow me to boot from the other disk. VirtualBox doesn't seem to have the option to do so. VMWare Player has the option to have an IDE drive exposed to the virtual environment as a SCSI disk. I've tried that, but it throws the error "Cannot connect virtual device ide1:0 because no corresponding device is available on the host." I've verified that it's pointing to the correct hard drive. I'm willing to try other virtualization products, and I'm not averse to spending a little money to get this to work. I've seen this other question, and it's not a duplicate, as I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm also interested in solutions going the other way (Linux on Windows), but that'd be lagniappe. Gory Hardware Details: Lenovo T410, 2.4 GHz Core i5 (has virtualization extensions), 4GiB RAM, 2x 320 GiB SATA HDD, one in optical bay. Fedora 14 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64, Windows 7 32-bit.

  • SQL Server Clustered Index: (Physical) Data Page Order

    I am struggling understanding what a clustered index in SQL Server 2005 is. I read the MSDN article Clustered Index Structures (among other things) but I am still unsure if I understand it correctly. The (main) question is: what happens if I insert a row (with a "low" key) into a table with a clustered index? The above mentioned MSDN article states: The pages in the data chain and the rows in them are ordered on the value of the clustered index key. And Using Clustered Indexes for example states: For example, if a record is added to the table that is close to the beginning of the sequentially ordered list, any records in the table after that record will need to shift to allow the record to be inserted. Does this mean that if I insert a row with a very "low" key into a table that already contains a gazillion rows literally all rows are physically shifted on disk? I cannot believe that. This would take ages, no? Or is it rather (as I suspect) that there are two scenarios depending on how "full" the first data page is. A) If the page has enough free space to accommodate the record it is placed into the existing data page and data might be (physically) reordered within that page. B) If the page does not have enough free space for the record a new data page would be created (anywhere on the disk!) and "linked" to the front of the leaf level of the B-Tree? This would then mean the "physical order" of the data is restricted to the "page level" (i.e. within a data page) but not to the pages residing on consecutive blocks on the physical hard drive. The data pages are then just linked together in the correct order. Or formulated in an alternative way: if SQL Server needs to read the first N rows of a table that has a clustered index it can read data pages sequentially (following the links) but these pages are not (necessarily) block wise in sequence on disk (so the disk head has to move "randomly"). How close am I? :)
