• DBMS agnostic - What to name the COUNT column from a SQL Query

  I have trouble naming the COUNT() column from SQL queries and will swap between various variants _Count [Count] (sql, or "count" or backticks for MySQL etc) C Cnt CountSomething (where "something" is the field being counted, or "CountAll") NoOfRows RowCount etc Has anyone come up with any name that you are happy with and always use without hesitation? This is bothering me because after joining SO just recently, my answers have shown this tendency of flip-flopping with no consistency. I need to get this sorted. Please help. (While we're at it, what do you use for SUM etc?) • Perl numerical sorting: how to ignore leading alpha character [migrated]

  I have a 1,660 row array like this: ... H00504 H00085 H00181 H00500 H00103 H00007 H00890 H08793 H94316 H00217 ... And the leading character never changes. It is always "H" then five digits. But when I do what I believe is a numerical sort in Perl, I'm getting strange results. Some segments are sorted in order, but then a different segment starts up. Here is a segment after sorting: ... H01578 H01579 H01580 H01581 H01582 H01583 H01584 H00536 H00537 H00538 H01585 H01586 H01587 H01588 H01589 H01590 ... What I'm trying is this: my @sorted_array = sort {$a <=> $b} @raw_array; But obviously it is not working. Anyone know why?

I have realised that I have many many ideas and notes for blogs entries dotted around my desk, along with a number of half completed entries that I have been meaning to get sorted and finished and posted. I am hoping that over the next couple of weeks I will be able to get some of these online, including my experineces installing BizTalk 2009 on two different types of environment, some useful utilities I have used and also some notes on issues that I have encountered recently and not so recently when developing BizTalk solutions. If not a storm it may at least drizzle.

• Right multi object dependance design

  I need some help with a correct design. I have a class called BufferManager. The push() method of this class reads data from a source and pushes it to a buffer repeatedly until there is no more data left in the source. There are also consumer threads that read data from this buffer, as soon as new data arrives. There is an option to sort the data before it comes to buffer. What I do right now is that BufferManager, instead of pushing data to the buffer, pushes it to another "sorting" buffer and starts a sorting thread. SorterManager class reads the data, sorts it in files and push()es the sorted data into the buffer. There will be a bottleneck (I use merge sort with files) but this is something I can't avoid. This is a bad design, because both BufferManager and SorterManager push data to a buffer (that consumers read from). I think only BufferManager should do it. How can I design it?

• Render full-screen gradient or texture

  What's the simplest way to fill the background of the screen with a gradient or a texture in Direct3D 10/11? I'm building a Windows 8 metro app in which the camera never moves and I render some content in D3D, but I need to fill the background with something else than a solid color. Do I need to figure out the size and position of a rectangle and position it in 3D space or can I have some simpler solution? I don't care about depth at all, I don't use any depth buffer since all my content is sorted back to front, so I could just start by drawing to the background.

• Find the latest file by modified date

  If I want to find the latest file (mtime) in a (big) directory containing subdirectories, how would I do it? Lots of posts I've found suggest some variation of ls -lt | head (amusingly, many suggest ls -ltr | tail which is the same but less efficient) which is fine unless you have subdirectories (I do). Then again, you could find . -type f -exec ls -lt \{\} \+ | head which will definitely do the trick for as many files as can be specified by one command, i.e. if you have a big directory, -exec...\+ will issue separate commands; therefore each group will be sorted by ls within itself but not over the total set; the head will therefore pick up the lastest entry of the first batch. Any answers?

• Order independent transparency in particle system

  I'm writing a particle system and would like to find a trick to achieve proper alpha blending without sorting particles because: Each particle is a point sprite in a single mesh and I can't use scene graph ability to sort transparent nodes. The system node should be properly sorted, though. Particle position is computed on shader from initial velocity, acceleration and time. In order to sort the system I would have to perform all this computations on CPU, which is something I want to avoid. Sorting hundreds of particles against camera position and uploading it on GPU each frame seams to be quiet heavy operation. Alpha testing seems to be fast enough on GLES 2.0 and works fine for non-transparent but "masked" textures. Still, it's not enough for semi-transparent particles. How would you handle this?

• Tips for adapting Date table to Power View forecasting #powerview #powerbi

  During the keynote of the PASS Business Analytics Conference, Amir Netz presented the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365. I immediately tried the new feature (which was immediately available, a welcome surprise in a Microsoft announcement for a new release) and I had several issues trying to use existing data models. The forecasting has a few requirements that are not compatible with the “best practices” commonly used for a calendar table until this announcement. For example, if you have a Year-Month-Day hierarchy and you want to display a line chart aggregating data at the month level, you use a column containing month and year as a string (e.g. May 2014) sorted by a numeric column (such as 201405). Such a column cannot be used in the x-axis of a line chart for forecasting, because you need a date or numeric column. There are also other requirements and I wrote the article Prepare Data for Power View Forecasting in Power BI on SQLBI, describing how to create columns that can be used with the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365.

• Directory paths for resources and assets

  If I have a file stucture for my final, released game something like: Main folder Media Images Other assets Sounds Executable List item And a different one for my 'in development' project, with the same Media folder but: Main Source and .obj, etc. Media with everything Bin folder with executable I obviously cannot hardcode file pathnames into this, like: "../Media/Image/evilguy.png" or "Media/Image/foo.jpg" because they wouldn't work with one of the builds and would require a lot of switching names. Instead, does it make sense for my resource manager, that loads everything, to have some kind of prefix path? Then, I can just do Get("foo.jpg") or Get("Sounds/boom.ogg") And simply switch out, for the final release, the ctr argument from the relative path for the development build to the release layout? If not, how have other people sorted these sorts of things out?

• Gnome shell crashing in 11.10 with 'purple haze' effect

  I've just got Gnome with 11.10 up and running with my netbook and liked it so much I thought I'd get my parents old machine sorted with Ubuntu too. Unity works fine but when I try to switch to Gnome shell, I get problems. On login, the wallpaper appears as normal but then the colour bleeds out from the centre, leaving traces of it around the edge in a purple haze (yes, I do like Jimi Hendrix but I'm not making this up). When I go to applications, typing then pressing enter in the search field dumps me out so there's nothing but File / Edit / View etc in top left; starting a program seems to work but then there's only a white screen and no program window. Gnome classic works fine, from the limited use I've given it. I'm using an Asus desktop with ABIT motherboard, 2.6ghz with 1gb RAM; I've checked drivers and it says I'm up to date, Nvidia graphics. Anyone any ideas?

  From what I understand, each mapper outputs an intermediate file. The intermediate data (data contained in each intermediate file) is then sorted by key. Then, a reducer is assigned a key by the master. The reducer reads from the intermediate file containing the key and then calls reduce using the data it has read. But in detail, how is the intermediate data organized? Can a data corresponding to a key be held in multiple intermediate files? What happens when there is too much data corresponding to one key to be held by a single file? In short, how do intermediate partitions differ from intermediate files and how are these differences dealt with in the implementation?

• Wired connection stops working suddenly

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.I was downloading something via aria..and then it suddenly stopped..no connection to Internet. I tried to ping the host but no reply..also tried to ping the route 192.168.250.1 but no reply got a message saying 'Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced internal error'. I restarted system but nothing is sorted out. The wired connection 'establishes' but I am not able to use Internet or ping either to host/route/8.8.8.8. The wireless is working fine and it does connect to Internet. I have a static IP address for wired connection and it does connect to Internet on Windows OS installed on this same Laptop with same IP settings.. please suggest how do i get my wired connection start working properly again..

• Sorting a REALLY BIG delimited text file in UNIX / VMS [closed]

  Hi everyone, I am going to sort a REALLY BIG delimited text file, say 250Mb (or a bunch of files of more or less than 250Mb) . It have 37 fields, and I need to sort it by 5 fields, for example 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th 7th fields. Under Unix / VMS, do I have a good option to do this FAST? I can write COBOL program. Now I am trying to sort them using the below command, but it already run for a long time and just not going to finished. Thank you. • Monitor displays "No VGA signal" "Check DVI cable" after installing motherboard drivers

  I bought computer with all of the needed parts, got everything sorted out, installed windows 7 but my CD-ROM doesn't fit my motherboard. So I had to download the driver manually and install it using USB disc. My motherboard: ECS elitegroup H61H2-M2, I downloaded it's drivers, installed the BIOS map or something, and then the computer forced a reboot after it was complete, after the reboot my monitor just stopped working and displayed No VGA signal, No DVI cable I think I've just installed the wrong driver, well but how can I sort it out? This is the driver I installed. On the book, it tells me to install the drivers, without the driver it won't see the Internet connection cable. I'm 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the monitor or it's cables. it stopped working exactly after the reboot after the installation.

• Using photoshop actions to decide if an image needs to be rotated

  I have Photoshop CS3 and I need to do a batch on a lot of pictures before I upload them. The pictures need to fit in an 600x800 box, yet be as big as possible within that box. Some of them are much wider than taller and others are more tall than wide. I am trying to put together a photoshop action that will rotate, resize, and fill pictures as needed to make them as big as possible while staying within the 600x800 box. The only thing I haven't gotten sorted out is how to tell photoshop to rotate the image 90 degrees if that will allow the picture to be bigger within the constraints. Any ideas?

  I have changed the main domain to a sub-domain & would like to re-direct all external links to the new sub domain. Have read a few articles but having no luck editing the .htaccess as it might be interfering with all the rules in there. Old: www.example.co.uk New: https://secure.example.co.uk The current rules are quite handy because it seems to have sorted out the structure for all internal links. It has even updated the file path for images (or this could just be wordpress as the url was updated under general settings). My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target. • Putting Ubuntu Server on to a networked HDD

  Firstly, I know very little about servers and secondly the 1Tb HDD I have has network capabilities, but no software is installed on it, so when connected to the computer it is seen as a network connection, but not as a drive. Any advice on how to get started would be great. Up until now, I have been using it as a USB drive which worked well, but when this is sorted, I would like it to be connected directly to our BT HomeHub accessible through the WiFi for all the family to use as a film and back up repository. I would then be able to set up individual accounts for each family member to use and may be, if possible, make it accessible from outside locations. The First question then is: How can I install Ubuntu server on the 1Tb HDD attached directly to the computers network port but which doesn't show up in Nautilus?   With backlinkwatch.com I can get a list of pages that link to a particular website. Unfortunately, it lists tons of obscure blogs and small forums, it has hard to find what link is really important. Is there a similar service, where links would be displayed sorted by "importance"? For instance, a link New York Times would be shown at the top of the list, while links in small blogs would not appear before a few pages. "Importance" can be subjective, so I suggest using the PageRank, but other metrics could be fine too.

• Asus 1001P freezes after chaging network settings

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Asus PC 1001P in a dual boot environment with XP. All has been running fine for several weeks, but: I've just changed ISP (from Tiscali to BT), and had already sorted out connection, registration, etc. on a Dell laptop. On the Asus I went into Ubuntu to alter the wireless network details (i.e. selected the new network, and entered the password). Ubuntu immediately started running slowly, and after rebooting it now freezes when it gets to the Ubuntu logo and gets no further. Please help, lovely Ubuntu experts.
