  • Herding Cats - That's My Job....

    - by user709270
    Written by Mike Schmitz - Sr. Director, Program Management Oracle JD Edwards  I remember seeing a super bowl commercial several years ago showing some well dressed people on the African savanna herding cats. I remember turning to the people I was watching the game with and telling them, “You just watched my job description”. Releasing software is a multi-facetted undertaking. In addition to making sure the code changes are complete, you also need to make sure the other key parts of a release are ready. For example when you have a question about the software, will the person on the other end of the phone be ready to answer your question? If you need training on that cool new piece of functionality, will there be an online training course ready for you to review? If you want to read about how the software is supposed to function, is there a user manual available? Putting all the release pieces together so they are available at the same time is what the JD Edwards Program Management team does. It is my team’s job to work with all the different functional teams so when a release is made generally available you have all the things you need to be successful. The JD Edwards Program Management team uses an internal planning tool called the Release Process Model (RPM) to ensure all deliverables are accounted for in a release. The RPM makes sure all the release deliverables are ready at the correct time and in the correct format. The RPM really helps all the functional teams in JD Edwards know what release deliverables they are accountable for and when they are to be delivered. It is my team’s job to make sure everyone understands what they need to do and when they need to deliver. We then make sure they are all on track to deliver on-time and in the right format. It is just that some days this feels like herding cats.

  • Is there a cheaper non-express non-student, non-msdn version of Visual Studio 2010 that supports plugins in the US than the $710 Professional Edition?

    - by Justin Dearing
    I've never actually purchased a copy of Visual Studio myself. SharpDevelop and Express edition have always been good enough for my personal use, and my employers always furnished me with the IDEs I needed to serve them. However, I'm thinking of actually paying for a copy for my personal laptop. I need this mainly so I can open solutions that contain web projects. So my question is: Is there an edition cheaper than the $710 Pro edition on Amazon that will do what I need: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-C5E-00521-Visual-Studio-Professional/dp/B0038KTO8S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1287456230&sr=8-2 ? What I need is defined as: Open up a solution with C#, Web App, VB.NET, and Web Projects. Install addins like resharper, testdriven.net, etc, SCM plugins, etc. Some level of db project support. At least to be able to open a dbproj. I only need that for SCM hooks. SSMS and SQLCMD are good enough for actually editing databases. Ability to install F#, IronPython, IronRuby etc. Now naturally I'm a fairly intelligent resourceful person so I realize I can get Visual Studio in a questionable manner. Thats not what I'm looking to do. I want a legal copy, I don't want a student copy, or an MSDN copy. I want a real copy, I just want to make sure I get the cheapest edition that serves my needs.

  • Lead Programmer definition clarification

    - by Junaid
    I am working on PHP and MySQL based web application for more than 5 years now. I started my career from Intern - Jr Developer - Software Developer - Sr. Software Engineer [Team Lead] that's what I am nowadays. I was looking at the link at Wikipedia regarding who is a lead programmer. The link states the following: A lead programmer is a software engineer in charge of one or more software projects. Alternative titles include Development Lead, Technical Lead, Senior Software Engineer, Software Design Engineer Lead (SDE Lead), Software Manager, or Senior Applications Developer. When primarily contributing in a high-level enterprise software design role, the title Software Architect (or similar) is often used. All of these titles can have different meanings depending on the context. My current job responsibilities are more or less like a Development Lead and to some extent near Software Architect because I usually design the core structure of new products and managing 2-3 project simultaneously and in the meantime involved in assisting other teams regarding the structural design of their projects, I am usually on call with clients along with project managers, I code most of the time when my team stuck somewhere / workload / integrating some third party API and etc. Primary reason of this writing is to know if I qualify for a Development Lead Title? in accordance with my above mentioned job descriptions?

  • Keeping Your Employees Engaged Requires More Than Bright Shiny Objects

    - by Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies
    by Jim Lein | Sr. Principal Product Marketing Director | Oracle Midsize Programs | @JimLein If you are experiencing the challenges of hiring and retaining the best talent then you understand how important it is to keep employees engaged. An engaged employee is "one who understands his/her place in the organization and fully comprehends how they contribute to and participate in the firm's execution of its Mission and Vision". It goes deeper than just what I call "bright shiny objects". During my ski bum days, all my boss at the ski shop had to do was say, "If you put all these boots away before noon you can make a few powder runs and come back for the afternoon rush". That's as bright and shiny as it gets. Pamela Stroko heads up Oracle's HCM Sales Enablement and Development and is Talent Management and Expert and Evangelist. Our Oracle Accelerate quarterly newsletter features a Q&A with Stroko on the Current State of Employee Engagement. Stroko provides perspective on how to keep employees engaged when hiring managers are challenged to find and retain top talent. Read the entire Q&A here. Click here to see the entire newsletter. • Read Oracle Certification Program's December 2012 E-Magazine now!

    - by Harold Green
    Hello Everyone, The big news in this edition of our Oracle Certification E-Magazine is related to a change in the way that exam results are provided at the end of the test (using our CertView tool). This significant process change for the Oracle program sets the stage for tighter integration of candidate information and exam/certifcation results. Additionally, it helps give every certification holder access to important tools available in CertView. The new process was implemented in November and so far it is going very well. Much of the success of this new initiative is due to you (following the new process)! We are continuing to work to expand the functionality of CertView to better help you use your certification as a tool to help improve your career. Also in this issue of the E-Magazine, we are announcing several new offerings. We have a new SQL Tuning certification as well as a new Exam Preparation Seminar. We have continued to release new Exam Preparation Seminars and Exam Preparation Seminar Value Packages and we are receiving good feedback. We hope that you will consider employing one of these seminars to help you prepare for your next certification exam. They are now even available on iPad! READ THE DECEMBER 2012 EDITION HERE Thank you and good luck! Paul Sorensen Sr. Director, Global Certification Programs

  • Are all SFP+ tranceivers usable for FEX between Nexus 5000 and Nexus 2000?

    - by Alain O'Dea
    I am looking at building a network with Nexus 5000 parent switches and Nexus 2000 fabric extenders. The mystery at the moment is what kind of SFP+ tranceivers are required for cross-connecting racks. Right now I am considering FET-10G, but I am not sure that 100m is long enough given the separation between racks is potentially very large since it is a rented rack environment. Are all SFP+ tranceivers usable for FEX between Nexus 5000 and Nexus 2000? Specifically, can SFP-10G-SR transceivers be used for longer distance FEX?

  • Advice on choosing a book to read

    - by Kioshiki
    I would like to ask for some recommendations on useful books to read. Initially I had intended on posting quite a long description of my current issue and asking for advice. But I realised that I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to ask. One thing that is clear to me is that my knowledge in various areas needs improving and reading is one method of doing that. Though choosing the right book to read seems like a task in itself when there are so many books out there. I am a programmer but I also deal with analysis, design & testing. So I am not sure what type of book to read. One option might be to work through two books at the same time. I had thought maybe one about design or practices and another of a more technical focus. Recently I came across one book that I thought might be useful to read: http://xunitpatterns.com/index.html It seems like an interesting book, but the comments I read on amazon.co.uk show that the book is probably longer than it needs to be. Has anyone read it and can comment on this? Another book that I already own and would probably be a good one to finish reading is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Code-Complete-Practical-Handbook-Construction/dp/0735619670/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309438553&sr=8-1 Has anyone else read this who can comment on its usefulness? Beyond these two I currently have no clear idea of what to read. I have thought about reading a book related to OO design or the GOF design patterns. But I wonder if I am worrying too much about the process and practices and not focusing on the actual work. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or comments. Many Thanks, Kioshiki

  • Payables Master Generic Datafix (MGD) Now Checks For Even More EBTax Corruption!!

    - by MargaretW
    The Payables MGD is a vital diagnostic that all R12/12.1 customers need to run regularly to check the data integrity of their Payables system. This script does not make any changes to your system, so it’s risk free and it produces a HTML formatted output showing which data corruption issues have been detected and provides the Doc ID’s that will be needed to fix them. This MGD diagnostic (version 120.92 and above) is even better than it used to be as it now checks for 11 new EBTax corruption signatures that Support was seeing on a consistent basis. These lengthy Service Requests could have been avoided with one run of the MGD which tells you right away if you have data corruption. It’s the first thing our Payables support engineers will have you run when you log an SR so why not be one step ahead? The new EBTax signatures that were included in this latest update to the MGD are pulled from the following common solutions documents: R12 E-Business Tax/Payables Data-Fixes: Cause and action to handle ZX_LINES_SUMMARY_U1 issue Doc ID 1152123.1 EB-Tax Data Corruption Issues & Recommended Solutions Doc ID 1316316.1 The specific issues that are now screened are detailed below: 1. TAXABLE_BASIS_FORMULA and MANUALLY_ENTERED_FLAG mismatch 2. ESTABLISHMENT_ID mismatch 3. TRX_NUMBER mismatch 4. TAX_RATE mismatch 5. Currency Conversion related columns mismatch in Migrated Invoices 6. HISTORICAL_FLAG and RECORD_TYPE_CODE mismatch 7. ADJUSTED_DOC_TRX_LEVEL_TYPE is NULL or APPLIED_FROM_TRX_LEVEL_TYPE is NULL 8. Missing Reversal Tax Distributions For Tax Distributions 9. Tax Lines for discarded or cancelled Transaction Lines are not marked as cancelled 10. Error AP_ERR_TAX_DIST_SYNC 11. AP_UNFROZEN_DIST_EXIST/Unfrozen Tax Distributions exist for this invoice Get Proactive – Check your system for these common EBTax issues and fix the data before it causes a problem. Access the MGD note and watch the video that explains how it works here - R12: Master GDF Diagnostic to Validate Data Related to Invoices, Payments, Accounting, Suppliers and EBTax [VIDEO] Doc ID 1360390.1

  • Monday at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 - Must See Session: “Using the Right Tools, Techniques, and Technologies for Integration Projects”

    - by Lionel Dubreuil
    Don’t miss this “CON8669 - Using the Right Tools, Techniques, and Technologies for Integration Projects“ session with Timothy Hall - Sr. Director, Oracle: Date: Monday, Oct 1, Time: 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM Location: Moscone South - 308 Every integration project brings its own unique set of challenges. There are many tools and techniques to choose from. How do you ensure that you have a means of consistently and repeatedly making decisions about which tools, techniques, and technologies are used? In working with many customers around the globe, Oracle has developed a set of criteria to help evaluate a variety of common integration questions. This session explores these criteria and how they have been further organized into decision trees that offer a repeatable means for ensuring that project teams are given the same guidance from project to project. Using these techniques, the presentation shows how you can reduce risk and speed productivity for your projects Objectives for this session are to: Discuss common questions that arise at the start of integration projects Review various decision criteria and approaches for getting to a consistent set of answers Explore how these techniques can be used to reduce risk and speed productivity Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";}

  • sticky bit on NFS file system

    - by Kris_R
    I have a system where to the main server (homes, nfs, ntp, queue...) can log-in only root – all the other users use front-end host with NFS-mounted home directories (RW) and all other software directories (read-only). My problem is, that time to time, if root or normal user with sudo makes some administrative works on front-end some homes of normal users getting sticky bits (drwsr-sr-x). If it happens usually the user can't log-in (as long as permission for his home are not changed to drwxr-xr-x). The last time I saw it after compiling some new software (normal user configure;make) and installation from the same directory as root (su and make install or direct as normal user sudo make install). Can somebody explain me why it happens and what should I do to get rid of this problem? p.s. I'm using CentOS 5.7

  • Why doesn't my implementation of ElGamal work for long text strings?

    - by angstrom91
    I'm playing with the El Gamal cryptosystem, and my goal is to be able to encipher and decipher long sequences of text. I have come up with a method that works for short sequences, but does not work for long sequences, and I cannot figure out why. El Gamal requires the plaintext to be an integer. I have turned my string into a byte[] using the .getBytes() method for Strings, and then created a BigInteger out of the byte[]. After encryption/decryption, I turn the BigInteger into a byte[] using the .toByteArray() method for BigIntegers, and then create a new String object from the byte[]. This works perfectly when i call ElGamalEncipher with strings up to 129 characters. With 130 or more characters, the output produced from ElGamalDecipher is garbled. Can someone suggest how to solve this issue? Is this an issue with my method of turning the string into a BigInteger? If so, is there a better way to turn my string of text into a BigInteger and back? Below is my encipher/decipher code with a program to demonstrate the problem. import java.math.BigInteger; public class Main { static BigInteger P = new BigInteger("15893293927989454301918026303382412" + "2586402937727056707057089173871237566896685250125642378268385842" + "6917261652781627945428519810052550093673226849059197769795219973" + "9423619267147615314847625134014485225178547696778149706043781174" + "2873134844164791938367765407368476144402513720666965545242487520" + "288928241768306844169"); static BigInteger G = new BigInteger("33234037774370419907086775226926852" + "1714093595439329931523707339920987838600777935381196897157489391" + "8360683761941170467795379762509619438720072694104701372808513985" + "2267495266642743136795903226571831274837537691982486936010899433" + "1742996138863988537349011363534657200181054004755211807985189183" + "22832092343085067869"); static BigInteger R = new BigInteger("72294619754760174015019300613282868" + "7219874058383991405961870844510501809885568825032608592198728334" + "7842806755320938980653857292210955880919036195738252708294945320" + "3969657021169134916999794791553544054426668823852291733234236693" + "4178738081619274342922698767296233937873073756955509269717272907" + "8566607940937442517"); static BigInteger A = new BigInteger("32189274574111378750865973746687106" + "3695160924347574569923113893643975328118502246784387874381928804" + "6865920942258286938666201264395694101012858796521485171319748255" + "4630425677084511454641229993833255506759834486100188932905136959" + "7287419551379203001848457730376230681693887924162381650252270090" + "28296990388507680954"); public static void main(String[] args) { FewChars(); System.out.println(); ManyChars(); } public static void FewChars() { //ElGamalEncipher(String plaintext, BigInteger p, BigInteger g, BigInteger r) BigInteger[] cipherText = ElGamal.ElGamalEncipher("This is a string " + "of 129 characters which works just fine . • WCF DataContractSerializer Behavior

    - by sbanwart
    I'm seeing some unusual behavior when using the DataContractSerializer. I have defined a message contract like so: namespace MyNamespace.DataContracts { [MessageContract(WrapperName = "order", WrapperNamespace = @"http://example.com/v1/order")] public class MyOrder { [MessageBodyMember(Namespace = @"http://http://example.com/v1/order", Order = 1)] public MyStore store; [MessageBodyMember(Namespace = @"http://http://example.com/v1/order", Order = 2)] public MyOrderHeader orderHeader; [MessageBodyMember(Namespace = @"http://example.com/v1/order", Order = 3)] public List<MyPayment> payments; [MessageBodyMember(Namespace = @"http://example.com/v1/order", Order = 4)] public List<MyShipment> shipments; } . . I'm sending it an XML message that looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <order xmlns="http://example.com/v1/order> <store> ... </store> <orderHeader> ... </orderHeader> <payments> <payment> ... </payment> </payments> <shipments> <shipment> ... </shipment> </shipments> </order> My service deserializes this XML as expected. Inside my service, I'm using the DataContractSerializer to create an XML string and that's where things get weird. I'm using the serializer like this: DataContractSerializer serializer = new DataContractSerializer(typeof(MyOrder)); using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { serializer.WriteObject(ms, order); ms.Position = 0; StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(ms); string outputMessage = sr.ReadToEnd(); } Once this finishes, the outputMessage contains the following XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <MyOrder xmlns="http://example.com/v1/order" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <order> <store> ... </store> <orderHeader> ... </orderHeader> <payments> <payment> ... </payment> </payments> <shipments> <shipment> ... </shipment> </shipments> </order> </MyOrder> Needless to say, anything expecting to receive the original XML message will fail to parse this. So I guess I have two questions: Why is the DataContractSerializer adding the extra outer node to my XML output? Is there a way to stop it from doing this? Thanks.

  • How do you send a named pipe string from umnanaged to managed code space?

    - by billmcf
    I appear to have a named pipes 101 issue. I have a very simple set up to connect a simplex named pipe transmitting from a C++ unmanaged app to a C# managed app. The pipe connects, but I cannot send a "message" through the pipe unless I close the handle which appears to flush the buffer and pass the message through. It's like the message is blocked. I have tried reversing the roles of client/server and invoking them with different Flag combinations without any luck. I can easily send messages in the other direction from C# managed to C++ unmanaged. Does anyone have any insight. Can any of you guys successfully send messages from C++ unmanaged to C# managed? I can find plenty of examples of intra amanged or unmanaged pipes but not inter managed to/from unamanged - just claims to be able to do it. In the listings, I have omitted much of the wrapper stuff for clarity. The key bits I believe that are relevant are the pipe connection/creation/read and write methods. Don't worry too much about blocking/threading here. C# Server side // This runs in its own thread and so it is OK to block private void ConnectToClient() { // This server will listen to the sending client if (m_InPipeStream == null) { m_InPipeStream = new NamedPipeServerStream("TestPipe", PipeDirection.In, 1); } // Wait for client to connect to our server m_InPipeStream.WaitForConnection(); // Verify client is running if (!m_InPipeStream.IsConnected) { return; } // Start listening for messages on the client stream if (m_InPipeStream != null && m_InPipeStream.CanRead) { ReadThread = new Thread(new ParameterizedThreadStart(Read)); ReadThread.Start(m_InPipeStream); } } // This runs in its own thread and so it is OK to block private void Read(object serverObj) { NamedPipeServerStream pipeStream = (NamedPipeServerStream)serverObj; using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(pipeStream)) { while (true) { string buffer = "" ; try { // Blocks here until the handle is closed by the client-side!! buffer = sr.ReadLine(); // <<<<<<<<<<<<<< Sticks here } catch { // Read error break; } // Client has disconnected? if (buffer == null || buffer.Length == 0) break; // Fire message received event if message is non-empty if (MessageReceived != null && buffer != "") { MessageReceived(buffer); } } } } C++ client side // Static - running in its own thread. DWORD CNamedPipe::ListenForServer(LPVOID arg) { // The calling app (this) is passed as the parameter CNamedPipe* app = (CNamedPipe*)arg; // Out-Pipe: connect as a client to a waiting server app->m_hOutPipeHandle = CreateFile("\\\\.\\pipe\\TestPipe", GENERIC_WRITE, 0, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, NULL); // Could not create handle if (app->m_hInPipeHandle == NULL || app->m_hInPipeHandle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { return 1; } return 0; } // Sends a message to the server BOOL CNamedPipe::SendMessage(CString message) { DWORD dwSent; if (m_hOutPipeHandle == NULL || m_hOutPipeHandle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { return FALSE; } else { BOOL bOK = WriteFile(m_hOutPipeHandle, message, message.GetLength()+1, &dwSent, NULL); //FlushFileBuffers(m_hOutPipeHandle); // <<<<<<< Tried this return (!bOK || (message.GetLength()+1) != dwSent) ? FALSE : TRUE; } } // Somewhere in the Windows C++/MFC code... ... // This write is non-blocking. It just passes through having loaded the pipe. m_pNamedPipe->SendMessage("Hi de hi"); ...

  • How to search Multiple Sites using Lucene Search engine API?

    - by Wael Salman
    Hope that someone can help me as soon as possible :-) I would like to know how can we search Multiple Sites using Lucene??! (All sites are in one index). I have succeeded to search one website , and to index multiple sites, however I am not able to search all websites. Consider this method that I have: private void PerformSearch() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; //Create the Searcher object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; IndexSearcher objSearcher = new IndexSearcher(strIndexDir); //Parse the query, "text" is the default field to search Query objQuery = QueryParser.Parse(mstrQuery, "text", new StandardAnalyzer()); //Create the result DataTable mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("title", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("path", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("score", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("sample", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("explain", typeof(string)); //Perform search and get hit count Hits objHits = objSearcher.Search(objQuery); mintTotal = objHits.Length(); //Create Highlighter QueryHighlightExtractor highlighter = new QueryHighlightExtractor(objQuery, new StandardAnalyzer(), "<B>", "</B>"); //Initialize "Start At" variable mintStartAt = GetStartAt(); //How many items we should show? int intResultsCt = GetSmallerOf(mintTotal, mintMaxResults + mintStartAt); //Loop through results and display for (int intCt = mintStartAt; intCt < intResultsCt; intCt++) { //Get the document from resuls index Document doc = objHits.Doc(intCt); //Get the document's ID and set the cache location string strID = doc.Get("id"); string strLocation = ""; if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") strLocation = Server.MapPath("cache") + @"\" + mstrURL + @"\" + strID + ".htm"; else strLocation = doc.Get("path") + doc.Get("filename"); //Load the HTML page from cache string strPlainText; using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(strLocation, System.Text.Encoding.Default)) { strPlainText = ParseHTML(sr.ReadToEnd()); } //Add result to results datagrid DataRow row = mobjDTResults.NewRow(); if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") row["title"] = doc.Get("title"); else row["title"] = doc.Get("filename"); row["path"] = doc.Get("path"); row["score"] = String.Format("{0:f}", (objHits.Score(intCt) * 100)) + "%"; row["sample"] = highlighter.GetBestFragments(strPlainText, 200, 2, "..."); Explanation objExplain = objSearcher.Explain(objQuery, intCt); row["explain"] = objExplain.ToHtml(); mobjDTResults.Rows.Add(row); } objSearcher.Close(); //Finalize results information mTsDuration = DateTime.Now - start; mintFromItem = mintStartAt + 1; mintToItem = GetSmallerOf(mintStartAt + mintMaxResults, mintTotal); } as you can see that I use the site URL 'mstrURL' when I create the search object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; How can I do the same when I want to search multiple sites?? Actually I am using the code from http://www.keylimetie.com/blog/2005/8/4/lucenenet/

  • VS 2012 Code Review &ndash; Before Check In OR After Check In?

    - by Tarun Arora
    “Is Code Review Important and Effective?” There is a consensus across the industry that code review is an effective and practical way to collar code inconsistency and possible defects early in the software development life cycle. Among others some of the advantages of code reviews are, Bugs are found faster Forces developers to write readable code (code that can be read without explanation or introduction!) Optimization methods/tricks/productive programs spread faster Programmers as specialists "evolve" faster It's fun “Code review is systematic examination (often known as peer review) of computer source code. It is intended to find and fix mistakes overlooked in the initial development phase, improving both the overall quality of software and the developers' skills. Reviews are done in various forms such as pair programming, informal walkthroughs, and formal inspections.” Wikipedia No where does the definition mention whether its better to review code before the code has been committed to version control or after the commit has been performed. No matter which side you favour, Visual Studio 2012 allows you to request for a code review both before check in and also request for a review after check in. Let’s weigh the pros and cons of the approaches independently. Code Review Before Check In or Code Review After Check In? Approach 1 – Code Review before Check in Developer completes the code and feels the code quality is appropriate for check in to TFS. The developer raises a code review request to have a second pair of eyes validate if the code abides to the recommended best practices, will not result in any defects due to common coding mistakes and whether any optimizations can be made to improve the code quality.                                             Image 1 – code review before check in Pros Everything that gets committed to source control is reviewed. Minimizes the chances of smelly code making its way into the code base. Decreases the cost of fixing bugs, remember, the earlier you find them, the lesser the pain in fixing them. Cons Development Code Freeze – Since the changes aren’t in the source control yet. Further development can only be done off-line. The changes have not been through a CI build, hard to say whether the code abides to all build quality standards. Inconsistent! Cumbersome to track the actual code review process.  Not every change to the code base is worth reviewing, a lot of effort is invested for very little gain. Approach 2 – Code Review after Check in Developer checks in, random code reviews are performed on the checked in code.                                                      Image 2 – Code review after check in Pros The code has already passed the CI build and run through any code analysis plug ins you may have running on the build server. Instruct the developer to ensure ZERO fx cop, style cop and static code analysis before check in. Code is cleaner and smell free even before the code review. No Offline development, developers can continue to develop against the source control. Cons Bad code can easily make its way into the code base. Since the review take place much later in the cycle, the cost of fixing issues can prove to be much higher. Approach 3 – Hybrid Approach The community advocates a more hybrid approach, a blend of tooling and human accountability quotient.                                                               Image 3 – Hybrid Approach 1. Code review high impact check ins. It is not possible to review everything, by setting up code review check in policies you can end up slowing your team. More over, the code that you are reviewing before check in hasn't even been through a green CI build either. 2. Tooling. Let the tooling work for you. By running static analysis, fx cop, style cop and other plug ins on the build agent, you can identify the real issues that in my opinion can't possibly be identified using human reviews. Configure the tooling to report back top 10 issues every day. Mandate the manual code review of individuals who keep making it to this list of shame more often. 3. During Merge. I would prefer eliminating some of the other code issues during merge from Main branch to the release branch. In a scrum project this is still easier because cheery picking the merges is a possibility and the size of code being reviewed is still limited. Let the tooling work for you, if some one breaks the CI build often, put them on a gated check in build course until you see improvement. If some one appears on the top 10 list of shame generated via the build then ensure that all their code is reviewed till you see improvement. At the end of the day, the goal is to ensure that the code being delivered is top quality. By enforcing a code review before any check in, you force the developer to work offline or stay put till the review is complete. What do the experts say? So I asked a few expects what they thought of “Code Review quality gate before Checking in code?" Terje Sandstrom | Microsoft ALM MVP You mean a review quality gate BEFORE checking in code????? That would mean a lot of code staying either local or in shelvesets, and not even been through a CI build, and a green CI build being the main criteria for going further, f.e. to the review state. I would not like code laying around with no checkin’s. Having a requirement that code is checked in small pieces, 4-8 hours work max, and AT LEAST daily checkins, a manual code review comes second down the lane. I would expect review quality gates to happen before merging back to main, or before merging to release.  But that would all be on checked-in code.  Branching is absolutely one way to ease the pain.   Another way we are using is automatic quality builds, running metrics, coverage, static code analysis.  Unfortunately it takes some time, would be great to be on CI’s – but…., so it’s done scheduled every night. Based on this we get, among other stuff,  top 10 lists of suspicious code, which is then subjected to reviews.  If a person seems to be very popular on these top 10 lists, we subject every check in from that person to a review for a period. That normally helps.   None of the clients I have can afford to have every checkin reviewed, so we need to find ways around it. I don’t disagree with the nicety of having all the code reviewed, but I find it hard to find those resources in today’s enterprises. David V. Corbin | Visual Studio ALM Ranger I tend to agree with both sides. I hate having code that is not checked in, but at the same time hate having “bad” code in the repository. I have found that branching is one approach to solving this dilemma. Code is checked into the private/feature branch before the review, but is not merged over to the “official” branch until after the review. I advocate both, depending on circumstance (especially team dynamics)   - The “pre-checkin” is usually for elements that may impact the project as a whole. Think of it as another “gate” along with passing unit tests. - The “post-checkin” may very well not be at the changeset level, but correlates to a review at the “user story” level.   Again, this depends on team dynamics in play…. Robert MacLean | Microsoft ALM MVP I do not think there is no right answer for the industry as a whole. In short the question is why do you do reviews? Your question implies risk mitigation, so in low risk areas you can get away with it after check in while in high risk you need to do it before check in. An example is those new to a team or juniors need it much earlier (maybe that is before checkin, maybe that is soon after) than seniors who have shipped twenty sprints on the team. Abhimanyu Singhal | Visual Studio ALM Ranger Depends on per scenario basis. We recommend post check-in reviews when: 1. We don't want to block other checks and processes on manual code reviews. Manual reviews take time, and some pieces may not require manual reviews at all. 2. We need to trace all changes and track history. 3. We have a code promotion strategy/process in place. For risk mitigation, post checkin code can be promoted to Accepted branches. Or can be rejected. Pre Checkin Reviews are used when 1. There is a high risk factor associated 2. Reviewers are generally (most of times) have immediate availability. 3. Team does not have strict tracking needs. Simply speaking, no single process fits all scenarios. You need to select what works best for your team/project. Thomas Schissler | Visual Studio ALM Ranger This is an interesting discussion, I’m right now discussing details about executing code reviews with my teams. I see and understand the aspects you brought in, but there is another side as well, I’d like to point out. 1.) If you do reviews per check in this is not very practical as a hard rule because this will disturb the flow of the team very often or it will lead to reduce the checkin frequency of the devs which I would not accept. 2.) If you do later reviews, for example if you review PBIs, it is not easy to find out which code you should review. Either you review all changesets associate with the PBI, but then you might review code which has been changed with a later checkin and the dev maybe has already fixed the issue. Or you review the diff of the latest changeset of the PBI with the first but then you might also review changes of other PBIs. Jakob Leander | Sr. Director, Avanade In my experience, manual code review: 1. Does not get done and at the very least does not get redone after changes (regardless of intentions at start of project) 2. When a project actually do it, they often do not do it right away = errors pile up 3. Requires a lot of time discussing/defining the standard and for the team to learn it However code review is very important since e.g. even small memory leaks in a high volume web solution have big consequences In the last years I have advocated following approach for code review - Architects up front do “at least one best practice example” of each type of component and tell the team. Copy from this one. This should include error handling, logging, security etc. - Dev lead on project continuously browse code to validate that the best practices are used. Especially that patterns etc. are not broken. You can do this formally after each sprint/iteration if you want. Once this is validated it is unlikely to “go bad” even during later code changes Agree with customer to rely on static code analysis from Visual Studio as the one and only coding standard. This has HUUGE benefits - You can easily tweak to reach the level you desire together with customer - It is easy to measure for both developers/management - It is 100% consistent across code base - It gets validated all the time so you never end up getting hammered by a customer review in the end - It is easy to tell the developer that you do not want code back unless it has zero errors = minimize communication You need to track this at least during nightly builds and make sure team sees total # issues. Do not allow #issues it to grow uncontrolled. On the project I run I require code analysis to have run on code before checkin (checkin rule). This means -  You have to have clean compile (or CA wont run) so this is extra benefit = very few broken builds - You can change a few of the rules to compile as errors instead of warnings. I often do this for “missing dispose” issues which you REALLY do not want in your app Tip: Place your custom CA rules files as part of solution. That  way it works when you do branching etc. (path to CA file is relative in VS) Some may argue that CA is not as good as manual inspection. But since manual inspection in reality suffers from the 3 issues in start it is IMO a MUCH better (and much cheaper) approach from helicopter perspective Tirthankar Dutta | Director, Avanade I think code review should be run both before and after check ins. There are some code metrics that are meant to be run on the entire codebase … Also, especially on multi-site projects, one should strive to architect in a way that lets men manage the framework while boys write the repetitive code… scales very well with the need to review less by containment and imposing architectural restrictions to emphasise the design. Bruno Capuano | Microsoft ALM MVP For code reviews (means peer reviews) in distributed team I use http://www.vsanywhere.com/default.aspx  David Jobling | Global Sr. Director, Avanade Peer review is the only way to scale and its a great practice for all in the team to learn to perform and accept. In my experience you soon learn who's code to watch more than others and tune the attention. Mikkel Toudal Kristiansen | Manager, Avanade If you have several branches in your code base, you will need to merge often. This requires manual merging, when a file has been changed in both branches. It offers a good opportunity to actually review to changed code. So my advice is: Merging between branches should be done as often as possible, it should be done by a senior developer, and he/she should perform a full code review of the code being merged. As for detecting architectural smells and code smells creeping into the code base, one really good third party tools exist: Ndepend (http://www.ndepend.com/, for static code analysis of the current state of the code base). You could also consider adding StyleCop to the solution. Jesse Houwing | Visual Studio ALM Ranger I gave a presentation on this subject on the TechDays conference in NL last year. See my presentation and slides here (talk in Dutch, but English presentation): http://blog.jessehouwing.nl/2012/03/did-you-miss-my-techdaysnl-talk-on-code.html  I’d like to add a few more points: - Before/After checking is mostly a trust issue. If you have a team that does diligent peer reviews and regularly talk/sit together or peer review, there’s no need to enforce a before-checkin policy. The peer peer-programming and regular feedback during development can take care of most of the review requirements as long as the team isn’t under stress. - Under stress, enforce pre-checkin reviews, it might sound strange, if you’re already under time or budgetary constraints, but it is under such conditions most real issues start to be created or pile up. - Use tools to catch most common errors, Code Analysis/FxCop was already mentioned. HP Fortify, Resharper, Coderush etc can help you there. There are also a lot of 3rd party rules you can add to Code Analysis. I’ve written a few myself (http://fccopcontrib.codeplex.com) and various teams from Microsoft have added their own rules (MSOCAF for SharePoint, WSSF for WCF). For common errors that keep cropping up, see if you can define a rule. It’s much easier. But more importantly make sure you have a good help page explaining *WHY* it's wrong. If you have small feature or developer branches/shelvesets, you might want to review pre-merge. It’s still better to do peer reviews and peer programming, but the most important thing is that bad quality code doesn’t make it into the important branch. So my philosophy: - Use tooling as much as possible. - Make sure the team understands the tooling and the importance of the things it flags. It’s too easy to just click suppress all to ignore the warnings. - Under stress, tighten process, it’s under stress that the problems of late reviews will really surface - Most importantly if you do reviews do them as early as possible, but never later than needed. In other words, pre-checkin/post checking doesn’t really matter, as long as the review is done before the code is released. • Wireless card power management

    - by penner
    I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • MSCC: Global Windows Azure Bootcamp

    Mauritius participated and contributed to the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp 2014 (GWAB). Again! And this time stronger than ever, and together with 137 other locations in 56 countries world-wide. We had 62 named registrations, 7 guest additions and approximately 10 offline participants prior to the event day. Most interestingly the organisation of the GWAB through the MSCC helped to increased the number of craftsmen. The Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community has currently 138 registered members - in less than one year! Only with those numbers we can proudly say that all the preparations and hard work towards this event already paid off. Personally, I'm really grateful that we had this kind of response and the feedback from some attendees confirmed that the MSCC is on the right track here on Cyber Island Mauritius. Inspired and motivated by the success of this event, rest assured that there will be more public events like the GWAB. This time it took some time to reflect on our meetup, following my first impression right on spot: "Wow, what an experience to organise and participate in this global event. Overall, I've been very pleased with the preparations and the event itself. Surely, there have been some nicks that we have to address and to improve for future activities like this. Quite frankly, we are not professional event organisers (not yet) but we learned a lot over the past couple of days. A big Thank You to our event sponsors, namely Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific, Ceridian Mauritius and Emtel. Without them this event wouldn't have happened - Thank You! And to the cool team members of Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs). You geeks did a great job! Thanks!" So, how many attendees did we actually have? 61! - Awesome - 61 cloud computing instances to help on the research of diabetes. During Saturday afternoon there was even an online publication on L'Express: Les développeurs mauriciens se joignent au combat contre le diabète Reactions of other attendees Don't take my word for granted... Here are some impressions and feedback from our participants: "Awesome event, really appreciated the presentations :-)" -- Kevin on event comments "very interesting and enriching." -- Diana on event comments "#gwab #gwabmru 2014 great success. Looking forward for gwab 2015" -- Wasiim on Twitter "Was there till the end. Awesome Event. I'll surely join upcoming meetup sessions :)" -- Luchmun on event comments "#gwabmru was not that cool. left early" -- Mohammad on Twitter The overall feedback is positive but we are absolutely aware that there quite a number of problems we had to face. We are already looking into that and ideas / action plans on how we will be able to improve it for future events. The sessions We started the day with welcoming speeches by Thierry Coret, Sr. Marketing Manager of Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific and Vidia Mooneegan, Managing Director and Sr. Vice President of Ceridian Mauritius. The clear emphasis was on the endless possibilities of cloud computing and how it can enable any kind of sectors here in the country. Then it was about time to set up the cloud computing services in order to contribute each attendees cloud computing resources to the global research of diabetes, a step by step guide presented by Arnaud Meslier, Technical Evangelist at Microsoft. Given a rendering package and a configuration file it was very interesting to follow the single steps in Windows Azure. Also, during the day we were not sure whether the set up had been correctly, as Mauritius didn't show up on the results board - which should have been the case after approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Anyways, let the minions work... Next, Arnaud gave a brief overview of the variety of services Windows Azure has to offer. Whether you need a development environment for your websites or mobiles app, running a virtual machine with your existing applications or simply putting a SQL database online. No worries, Windows Azure has the right packages available and the online management portal is really easy t handle. After this, we got a little bit more business oriented while Wasiim Hosenbocus, employee at Ceridian, took the attendees through the inerts of a real-life application, and demoed a couple of the existing features. He did a great job by showing how the different services of Windows Azure can be created and pulled together. After the lunch break it is always tough to keep the audience awake... And it was my turn. I gave a brief overview on operating and managing a SQL database on Windows Azure. Well, there are actually two options available and depending on your individual requirements you should be aware of both. The simpler version is called SQL Database and while provisioning only takes a couple of seconds, you should take into consideration that SQL Database has a number of constraints, like limitations on the actual database size - up to 5 GB as web edition and up to 150 GB maximum as business edition -, among others. Next, it was Chervine Bhiwoo's session on Windows Azure Mobile Services. It was absolutely amazing to see that the mobiles services directly offers you various project templates, like Windows 8 Store App, Android app, iOS app, and even Xamarin cross-platform app development. So, within a couple of minutes you can have your first mobile app active and running on Windows Azure. Furthermore, Chervine showed the attendees that adding another user interface, like Web Sites running on ASP.NET MVC 4 only takes a couple of minutes, too. And last but not least, we rounded up the day with Windows Azure Websites and hosting of Virtual Machines presented by some members of the local Microsoft Students Partners programme. Surely, one of the big advantages using Windows Azure is the availability of pre-defined installation packages of known web applications, like WordPress, Joomla!, or Ghost. Compared to running your own web site with a traditional web hoster it is surely en par, and depending on your personal level of expertise, Windows Azure provides you more liberty in terms of configuration than maybe a shared hosting environment. Running a pre-defined web application is one thing but in case that you would like to have more control over your hosting environment it is highly advised to opt for a virtual machine. Provisioning of an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system was very simple to do but it takes some more minutes than you might expect. So, please be patient and take your time while Windows Azure gets everything in place for you. Afterwards, you can use a SecureShell (ssh) client like Putty in case of a Linux-based machine, or Remote Desktop Services when operating a Windows Server system to log in into your virtual machine. At the end of the day we had a great Q&A session and we finalised the event with our raffle of goodies. Participation in the raffle was bound to submission of the session survey and most gratefully we had a give-away for everyone. What a nice coincidence to finish of the day. Note: All session slides (and demo codes) will be made available on the MSCC event page. Please, check the Files section over there. (Some) Visual impressions from the event Just to give you an idea about what has happened during the GWAB 2014 at Ebene... Speakers and Microsoft Student Partners are getting ready for the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp 2014 GWAB 2014 attendees are fully integrated into the hands-on-labs and setting up their individuals cloud computing services 60 attendees at the GWAB 2014. Despite some technical difficulties we had a great time running the event GWAB 2014: Using the lunch break for networking and exchange of ideas - Great conversations and topics amongst attendees There are more pictures on the original event page: Questions & Answers Following are a couple of questions which have been asked and didn't get an answer during the event: Q: Is it possible to upload static pages via FTP? A: Yes, you can. Have a look at the right side column on the dashboard of your website. There you'll find information about the FTP and SFTP host names. You can use any FTP client, like ie. FileZilla to log in. FTP also gives you access to your log files. Q: What are the size limitations on SQL Database? A: 5 GB on the Web Edition, and 150 GB on the business edition. A maximum 150 databases (inclusing 'master') per SQL Database server. More details here: General Guidelines and Limitations (Azure SQL Database) Q: What's the maximum size of a SQL Server running in a Virtual Machine? A: The maximum Windows Azure VM has currently 8 CPU cores, 14 or 56 GB of RAM and 16x 1 TB hard drives. More details here: Virtual Machine and Cloud Service Sizes for Azure Q: How can we register for Windows Azure? A: Mauritius is currently not listed for phone verification. Please get in touch with Arnaud Meslier at Microsoft IOI & FP Q: Can I use my own domain name for Windows Azure websites? A: Yes, you can. But this might require to upscale your account to Standard. In case that I missed a question and answer, please use the comment section at the end of the article. Thanks! Final results Every participant was instructed during the hands-on-lab session on how to set up a cloud computing service in their account. Of course, I won't keep the results from you... Global Azure Lab GWAB 2014: Our cloud computing contribution to the research of diabetes And I would say Mauritius did a good job! Upcoming Events What are the upcoming events here in Mauritius? So far, we have the following ones (incomplete list as usual) in chronological order: Launch of Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (15.4.2014) Corsair Hackers Reboot (19.4.2014) WebCup (TBA ~ June 2014) Developers Conference (TBA ~ July 2014) Linuxfest 2014 (TBA ~ November 2014) Hopefully, there will be more announcements during the next couple of weeks and months. If you know about any other event, like a bootcamp, a code challenge or hackathon here in Mauritius, please drop me a note in the comment section below this article. Thanks! Networking and job/project opportunities Despite having technical presentations on Windows Azure an event like this always offers a great bunch of possibilities and opportunities to get in touch with new people in IT, have an exchange of experience with other like-minded people. As I already wrote about Communities - The importance of exchange and discussion - I had a great conversation with representatives of the University des Mascareignes which are currently embracing cloud infrastructure and cloud computing for their various campuses in the Indian Ocean. As for the MSCC it would be a great experience to stay in touch with them, and to work on upcoming, common activities. Furthermore, I had a very good conversation with Thierry and Ludovic of Microsoft IOI & FP on the necessity of user groups and IT communities here on the island. It's great to see that the MSCC is currently on a run and that local companies are sharing our thoughts on promoting IT careers and exchange of IT knowledge in such an open way. I'm also looking forward to be able to participate and to contribute on more events in the near future. My resume of the day We learned a lot today and there is always room for improvement! It was an awesome event and quite frankly it was a pleasure to spend the day with so many enthuastic IT people in the same room. It was a great experience to organise such event locally and participate on a global scale to support the GlyQ-IQ Technology in their research on diabetes. I was so pleased to see the involvement of new MSCC members in taking the opportunity to share and learn about the power of cloud computing. The Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community is on the right way and this year's bootcamp on Windows Azure only marked the beginning of our journey. Thank you to our sponsors and my kudos to the MSPs! Update: Media coverage The event has been reported in local media, too. • Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

    - by Jon
    I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. Any help on this would be much appreciated.... thanks Jon jon@ubuntu:~$ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1d:72:ec:76:d5 inet addr:192.168.1.134 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::21d:72ff:feec:76d5/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:7846 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:7213 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:8046624 (8.0 MB) TX bytes:1329442 (1.3 MB) Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:91 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:91 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:34497 (34.4 KB) TX bytes:34497 (34.4 KB) Ive included by dmesg output below [ 0.428818] NET: Registered protocol family 2 [ 0.429003] IP route cache hash table entries: 131072 (order: 8, 1048576 bytes) [ 0.430562] TCP established hash table entries: 524288 (order: 11, 8388608 bytes) [ 0.436614] TCP bind hash table entries: 65536 (order: 8, 1048576 bytes) [ 0.437409] TCP: Hash tables configured (established 524288 bind 65536) [ 0.437412] TCP reno registered [ 0.437431] UDP hash table entries: 2048 (order: 4, 65536 bytes) [ 0.437482] UDP-Lite hash table entries: 2048 (order: 4, 65536 bytes) [ 0.437678] NET: Registered protocol family 1 [ 0.437705] pci 0000:00:02.0: Boot video device [ 0.437892] PCI: CLS 64 bytes, default 64 [ 0.437916] Simple Boot Flag at 0x57 set to 0x1 [ 0.438294] audit: initializing netlink socket (disabled) [ 0.438309] type=2000 audit(1319243447.432:1): initialized [ 0.440763] Freeing initrd memory: 13416k freed [ 0.468362] HugeTLB registered 2 MB page size, pre-allocated 0 pages [ 0.488192] VFS: Disk quotas dquot_6.5.2 [ 0.488254] Dquot-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0, 4096 bytes) [ 0.488888] fuse init (API version 7.16) [ 0.488985] msgmni has been set to 5890 [ 0.489381] Block layer SCSI generic (bsg) driver version 0.4 loaded (major 253) [ 0.489413] io scheduler noop registered [ 0.489415] io scheduler deadline registered [ 0.489460] io scheduler cfq registered (default) [ 0.489583] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.489633] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: irq 40 for MSI/MSI-X [ 0.489699] pcieport 0000:00:1c.1: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.489741] pcieport 0000:00:1c.1: irq 41 for MSI/MSI-X [ 0.489800] pcieport 0000:00:1c.2: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.489841] pcieport 0000:00:1c.2: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X [ 0.489904] pcieport 0000:00:1c.3: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.489944] pcieport 0000:00:1c.3: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X [ 0.490006] pcieport 0000:00:1c.4: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.490047] pcieport 0000:00:1c.4: irq 44 for MSI/MSI-X [ 0.490126] pci_hotplug: PCI Hot Plug PCI Core version: 0.5 [ 0.490149] pciehp: PCI Express Hot Plug Controller Driver version: 0.4 [ 0.490196] intel_idle: MWAIT substates: 0x1110 [ 0.490198] intel_idle: does not run on family 6 model 15 [ 0.491240] ACPI: Deprecated procfs I/F for AC is loaded, please retry with CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS_POWER cleared [ 0.493473] ACPI: AC Adapter [ADP1] (on-line) [ 0.493590] input: Lid Switch as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0D:00/input/input0 [ 0.496771] ACPI: Lid Switch [LID0] [ 0.496818] input: Sleep Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0E:00/input/input1 [ 0.496823] ACPI: Sleep Button [SLPB] [ 0.496865] input: Power Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXPWRBN:00/input/input2 [ 0.496869] ACPI: Power Button [PWRF] [ 0.496900] ACPI: acpi_idle registered with cpuidle [ 0.498719] Monitor-Mwait will be used to enter C-1 state [ 0.498753] Monitor-Mwait will be used to enter C-2 state [ 0.498761] Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle [ 0.517627] thermal LNXTHERM:00: registered as thermal_zone0 [ 0.517630] ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZS0] (67 C) [ 0.524796] thermal LNXTHERM:01: registered as thermal_zone1 [ 0.524799] ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZS1] (67 C) [ 0.524823] ACPI: Deprecated procfs I/F for battery is loaded, please retry with CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS_POWER cleared [ 0.524852] ERST: Table is not found!   • Trying to install mysql then lots of brew doctor errors

    - by gdi2290
    I couldn't install mysql I get this brew install mysql Error: You must `brew link cmake' before mysql can be installed so then I type brew ink cmake Linking /usr/local/Cellar/cmake/2.8.8... Error: Could not symlink file: /usr/local/Cellar/cmake/2.8.8/share/doc/cmake /usr/local/share/doc is not writable. You should change its permissions. when I typed brew doctor I get this Error: Some directories in /usr/local/share/locale aren't writable. This can happen if you "sudo make install" software that isn't managed by Homebrew. If a brew tries to add locale information to one of these directories, then the install will fail during the link step. You should probably chown them: /usr/local/share/locale/ar /usr/local/share/locale/ar/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/be /usr/local/share/locale/be/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/bg /usr/local/share/locale/bg/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/bs /usr/local/share/locale/bs/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ca /usr/local/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/cs /usr/local/share/locale/cs/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/da /usr/local/share/locale/da/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/de /usr/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/de_AT /usr/local/share/locale/de_AT/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/de_CH /usr/local/share/locale/de_CH/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/de_DE /usr/local/share/locale/de_DE/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/el /usr/local/share/locale/el/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/en_AU /usr/local/share/locale/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/en_CA /usr/local/share/locale/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/en_GB /usr/local/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/eo /usr/local/share/locale/eo/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/es /usr/local/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/es_ES /usr/local/share/locale/es_ES/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/es_PE /usr/local/share/locale/es_PE/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/et /usr/local/share/locale/et/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/fi /usr/local/share/locale/fi/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/fr /usr/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/fr_FR /usr/local/share/locale/fr_FR/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/gl /usr/local/share/locale/gl/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/he /usr/local/share/locale/he/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/hi /usr/local/share/locale/hi/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/hr /usr/local/share/locale/hr/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/hu /usr/local/share/locale/hu/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/hu_HU /usr/local/share/locale/hu_HU/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/id /usr/local/share/locale/id/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/it /usr/local/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ja /usr/local/share/locale/ja/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ka /usr/local/share/locale/ka/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ko /usr/local/share/locale/ko/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/lv /usr/local/share/locale/lv/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/mr /usr/local/share/locale/mr/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/nb /usr/local/share/locale/nb/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/nds /usr/local/share/locale/nds/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/nl /usr/local/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/nn /usr/local/share/locale/nn/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/oc /usr/local/share/locale/oc/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/pl /usr/local/share/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/pt /usr/local/share/locale/pt/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/pt_BR /usr/local/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/pt_PT /usr/local/share/locale/pt_PT/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ro /usr/local/share/locale/ro/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ru /usr/local/share/locale/ru/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/sk /usr/local/share/locale/sk/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/sr /usr/local/share/locale/sr/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/sv /usr/local/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/ta /usr/local/share/locale/ta/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/te /usr/local/share/locale/te/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/tr /usr/local/share/locale/tr/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/uk /usr/local/share/locale/uk/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/vi /usr/local/share/locale/vi/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/zh_CN /usr/local/share/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/zh_HK /usr/local/share/locale/zh_HK/LC_MESSAGES /usr/local/share/locale/zh_TW /usr/local/share/locale/zh_TW/LC_MESSAGES Error: The /usr/local directory is not writable. You should probably change the ownership and permissions of /usr/local back to your user account. Error: "config" scripts exist outside your system or Homebrew directories. ./configure scripts often look for *-config scripts to determine if software packages are installed, and what additional flags to use when compiling and linking. Having additional scripts in your path can confuse software installed via Homebrew if the config script overrides a system or Homebrew provided script of the same name. We found the following "config" scripts: /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/curl-config /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/ncurses5-config /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/ncursesw5-config /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/pkg-config /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/xml2-config /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/xslt-config Error: gettext was detected in your PREFIX. The gettext provided by Homebrew is "keg-only", meaning it does not get linked into your PREFIX by default. If you brew link gettext then a large number of brews that don't otherwise have a depends_on 'gettext' will pick up gettext anyway during the ./configure step. If you have a non-Homebrew provided gettext, other problems will happen especially if it wasn't compiled with the proper architectures. Error: Unbrewed dylibs were found in /usr/local/lib. Earlier versions of the pkg-config formula did not add this path to the search path, which means that other formula may not be able to find certain dependencies. To resolve this issue, re-brew pkg-config with: brew rm pkg-config && brew install pkg-config Error: You have a non-Homebrew 'pkg-config' in your PATH: /opt/sm/pkg/active/bin/pkg-config ./configure may have problems finding brew-installed packages using this other pkg-config. Error: Your Xcode is configured with an invalid path. You should change it to the correct path. Please note that there is no correct path at this time if you have only installed the Command Line Tools for Xcode. If your Xcode is pre-4.3 or you installed the whole of Xcode 4.3 then one of these is (probably) what you want: sudo xcode-select -switch /Developer sudo xcode-select -switch /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer DO NOT SET / OR EVERYTHING BREAKS!
