• What are the ways to do synchronized streaming video and text?

  I would like to have two streams. One being traditional streaming video and another being text. I will also build an interface that allows the user to create the text portion while watching the video. The context of these videos are usually that of an individual being filmed doing a presentation and later the next day for example, a coach will make text annotations (structured data is a plus) with the result being the text stream. It seems this is possible with Silverlight (see the article in the latest MSDN). However, what other methods are there if any? If there any, please give the reasons for why you are recommending them. Thanks. Also, I would prefer something that inst a software as a service hosted solution, but, dont let that keep you from giving an answer. Also keep in mind, the user shouldn't have to do any re-encoding of the video source, the text stream should be separate with someway to synchronize a coach's comments to an arbitrary time stamp in the video.

• Storing DOM reference elements in a Javascript array

  Dear experts, I was trying to dynamically generate DOM elements using JS. I read from Douglas Crockford's book that DOM is very very poorly structured. Anyways, I would like to create a number of DIVISION elements and store the reference into an array so it could be accessed later. Here's the code for(i=0;i<3;i++){ var div=document.body.appendChild(document.createElement("div")); var arr=new Array(); arr.push(div); } Somehow this would not work..... There is only 1 div element created. When I use the arr.length to test the code there is only 1 element in the array. Is there another way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance

• Own data format for the iPhone

  Hi, I would like to create my own data format for an iPhone app. The files should be similar structured as e.g. Apple's iWork files (.pages). That means, I have a folder with some files in it: The file 'Juicy.fruit' contains: Fruits ---> Apple.xml ---> Banana.xml ---> Pear.xml ---> PreviewPicture.png This folder "Fruits" should be packed in a handy file 'Juicy.fruit'. Compression isn't necessary. How could I achieve this? I've discovered some open source ZIP-libraries. • What guides or standards do you use for CVS in your team ?

  I'm starting to do a small amount of development within my company. I'm intending to use Git for CVS, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around CVS in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. The final release of this will be tagged as such and the bug fixes merged back into the trunk Each developer will have a public repo New features should get their own branch Obviously a lot of this will depend on what cvs you're using and how you've structured it. I stress that the logic always seems to be structured such that the return value is assigned in one plave only and no code is executed after it's assigned.

• Spring MVC with a rich client framework

  I have several applications that are structured as follows DataComponent WebComponent ThickClientComponent WebServices The DataComponent has all the functionality required to access the application's data so it contains the DAOs and the JPA entities. The other three modules are: WebComponent - A spring MVC application that uses the DataComponent for data acccess ThickClientComponent- A Swing application that uses the DataComponent for data access WebServices - A SOAP based services that also uses the DataComponent. All three projets have the DataComponent as a dependeny in their Maven POM file. I would like to use a rich client framework like RichFaces, icefaces or primefaces as i need to be able to use the rich components are available in rich client frameworks (i.e. trees, panel, drag and drop etc). I have looked around and i cant seem to find an example where a Spring MVC application uses a rich client platform. Is it possible? Are the rich client platforms a framework meaning that i have to use either Spring MVC or the rich client platform but not both? The DataComponent module is spring based.

• can i change the black background of an iphone app?

  My app is structured like this, a single MainWindow with window backgroundColor to white(which doesn't appear anywhere anyway), and in this nib i have a UINavigationController which doesn't seems to have a backgroundColor. Any view controller is added from code and made from code and they have a gray background. What happens is that when i rotate the iphone and the views are rotating as well, i see a black background under my views. Can this be changed? It looks ugly especially if i have a photo that is rotating in the same time with my gray background.

• Create UML diagrams after or before coding?

  I can clearly see the benefits of having UML diagrams showing your infrastructure of the application (class names, their members, how they communicate with each other etc). I'm starting a new project right now and have already structured the database (with visual paradigm). I want to use some design patterns to guide me how to code the classes. I wonder, should I code the classes first before I create UML diagram of it (maybe out of the code... seems possible) or should I first create UML diagram and then code (or generate code from the UML, seems possible that too). What are you experiences telling you is the best way?

  A friend and I were debating about whether he should use MySQL or a flatfile database for his website's backend. I told him to go with MySQL because it was structured, held records well, and was consistent. He on the other hand said that he would rather go for speed. Reading files is a lot quicker than connecting to MySQL and it made me wonder whether he was right. For example, why not just create a folder for each table, like so: users/ groups/ posts/, within the folders have the files named by ID (1, 2, 3) and then for the data use a format like so: username: John\npassword: e2fc714c4727ee9395f324cd2e7f331f\nemail: [email protected]? In other words, what are the advantages of MySQL over flatfiles?

• What are all the disadvantages of using files as a means of communicating between two processes?

  I have legacy code which I need to improve for performance reasons. My application comprises of two executables that need to exchange certain information. In the legacy code, one exe writes to a file ( the file name is passed as an argument to exe) and the second executable first checks if such a file exists; if does not exist checks again and when it finds it, then goes on to read the contents of the file. This way information in transferred between the two executables. The way the code is structured, the second executable is successful on the first try itself. Now I have to clean this code up and was wondering what are the disadvantages of using files as a means of communication rather than some inter-process communication like pipes.Is opening and reading a file more expensive than pipes? Are there any other disadvantages? And how significant do you think would be the performance degradation. The legacy code is run on both windows and linux.

  I'm using C# .NET. In my software I'm providing settings dialog through which user can set the application settings which I want to save to a file. Requirements (typical): Every class I defined uses some part of these settings. So, these should be global to all classes. These should be loaded while software is started. When ever user changes settings and clicks 'save'/'apply'. Current settings should change. I am wondering what is the best way to do this? Also, what is the best way to save these settings to disk? I mean should I create a Settings class object and serializing it to 'settings.dat' or provide an structured file like XML/JSON

• OpenCMS - Best approach for showing rotating references

  Hi, I would like to add on the right column of my site a rotating references section. Each reference would have some text + name of person + company name. It does not need to be structured (open text is also ok). I would then want opencms to rotate between 20 difference references each time a page is displayed. I can keep a session scope counter holding which reference we last showed. I need a way to manage the references (users not programmers) over time. • Active Directory: User UPN or DN for NTLM name, using pure LDAP?

  I have a Java app that can authenticate to LDAP by logging users into the AD LDAP server with the NTLM name (which they are used to - this is a requirement). I now also need to do authorization, and hence need to find a forest-unique identifier for the user (DN or UPN should work), from which I can further query the directory. The method needs to be absolutely portable, even if the AD is structured in an unusual fashion, otherwise I could just do a string replacement and search for a UPN of "${ntlm-user}@${ntlm-domain}.${configured-trailing-domain}" How can I do this, using pure LDAP? Currently, I'm using the java.naming.directory package, which I'd like to keep using, since it doesn't throw up problems when not binding with a DN but logging in with an NTLM name?

• Strategy in storing ad-hoc numbers/constants?

  I have a need to store a number of ad-hoc figures and constants for calculation. These numbers change periodically but they are different type of values. One might be a balance, a money amount, another might be an interest rate, and yet another might be a ratio of some kind. These numbers are then used in a calculation that involve other more structured figures. I'm not certain what the best way to store these in a relational DB is - that's the choice of storage for the app. One way, I've done before, is to create a very generic table that stores the values as text. I might store the data type along with it but the consumer knows what type it is so, in situations I didn't even need to store the data type. This kind of works fine but I am not very fond of the solution. Should I break down each of the numbers into specific categories and create tables that way? For example, create Rates table, and Balances table, etc.?

  I learned Python OOP at school. My (good in theory, bad in practice) informatics told us about how good OOP was for any purpose; Even/Especially for large projects. Now I don't have any experience with teamwork in software development (what a pity, I'd like to program in a team) and I don't know anything about scaling and large projects either. I got a bit confused by that as I always thought that OOP helped you keep large amounts of code clean and structured. Now why should OOP be problematic in large projects? • How can I separate Logic/UI in Android

  Hi, I want as my application to be structured in 2 parts: the logic code and the UI. I've tried to implement that using a controller class(here I keep the logic code) inside of each activity. The activity send messages to controller and receive the answer in two ways: the answer is returned immediately (if the action is not complex and it can be done in a verry short time) the activity set some listeners and the controller fire this listener when the action is complete. The problems appears when the controller have a lot of objects(each object should handle a set of actions and for each action I have to set & trigger a listener): it is hard to keep the code syncronized. I'm asking if you know a better way to implement this mechanism. Thank you.

  Hi, I'm building a C# client app that allows a user to communicate with one or more existing users in a system via an email-like metaphor. I'd like to present the user with a text entry box that auto-completes on known email addresses, and allows multiple delimiter-separated addresses to be entered. Ideally, I'd also like the email addresses to turn into structured controls once they've been entered and recognized. Basically, I'm modeling the UI interaction for adding users after Facebook's model. Are there any Windows Forms controls out there with the ability to do something like this? • Best Ruby ORM for Wrapping around Legacy SQL Server Database?

  Hi. I found this answer and it sounds like almost exactly what I'm doing. I have heard mixed answers about whether or not datamapper can support SQL Server through dataobjects. Basically, we have an app that uses a consistently structured database, consistently named tables, etc in SQL Server. We're making all kinds of tools and stuff that have to interact with it, some of them remotely and so I decided that we need to create some common, simple access point to do read/write operations on the SQL Server app since it's API is all C# and other things I despise. Now my question is if anyone has any examples or projects they know of where a ruby ORM can essentially create models for another application's legacy database by defining the conventions of each model's pkeys, fkeys, table names, etc. Sequel is the only ORM I've used with SQL Server but never to do anything quite like this. Any suggestions?
